Roy Carlson, 83, of Kerkhoven, died Tuesday, April 03, 2007 at Swift County - Benson Hospital in Benson. Funeral services will be 11:00 am, Saturday, April 7, 2007 at Kerkhoven Lutheran Church in Kerkhoven. Burial will be in Hillside Cemetery. Visitation will be from 4-6 pm, Friday at Harvey Anderson Kerkhoven Funeral Home and continue one hour prior to services at the church.

Roy graced the world with his presence October 28, 1923 in the house he lived in most of his life in Kerkhoven, Minnesota. The lives of anyone who knew him will never be the same. As the youngest of five children of Oscar and Gjertine (Stolan) Carlson, he quickly learned that wit and intelligence could get you in and out of trouble very quickly. At the age of 3, he and his sister Ruth escaped death from a barn fire at the five mile farm. Both have maintained a lifelong claim that the other started it.

He displayed an early mechanical flair while working for his dad at the International Harvester dealership. At 8 years old, he assembled a corn binder from a picture and had only three pieces left over when he was finished and it worked! He graduated from Kerkhoven High School in 1941 and started college at Luther College in Decorah, Iowa.

World War II began and he enlisted in the Army Air Corps where he trained as a pilot. He flew a P-51 Mustang fighter plane as an escort on bombing missions over Europe. He was separated from his squadron on the way back from his first mission. Nearly out of fuel, he spotted a cloud bank in the distance and managed a landing in a field in Sicily. He was later nominated honorary navigator by his Army buddies. He was given the nickname "Killer" due to his adept aim-he threw a shoe and nailed an unfortunate mouse. He flew 54 missions and received the Distinguished Flying Cross with 4 oak leaf clusters, and also the air medal.

Following the war, he came home and started a gravel business with his brother, Dick, and Max McLaughlin. In a couple of years, their business moved to excavation.

After a determined long-distance courtship, he married Vivian Youngren on November 19, 1949. They raised 8 children in Kerkhoven. He had a great love for his family and spent many Sundays at Swift Falls and Monson Lake walking & fishing. One of his grandchildren commented "not only does grandpa take us on walks; he also brings pop and chocolate covered granola bars." His droll wit and dry sense of humor were spread liberally among anyone fortunate enough to come within range. He had a love of the outdoors and a hatred of leftovers. He was a generous, patient man who would give you the loud shirt off of his back.

He left this mortal realm Tuesday, April 3 in Benson, Minnesota at the age of 83 years, 5 months and 7 days. He will be missed by his family including his wife, Vivian, children Karoline (Jack) Bagent of Battle Lake, Tim (Dorothy) Carlson of Hancock, Jeff (Pam) Carlson of Fergus Falls, Marvin Carlson of Fargo, ND, Clark (Ingrid) Carlson of Benton City, WA, Julia Carlson of Maple Grove, Theresa (Jon) Hickel of Borup; his grand children, Leif (Mirica), Bjorn (Chelsey) , Gjertine, Anders, Lars, Kari, Sean, Kristine, Linda (Weston), Anna, Molly, Tobin, Ciaran, Tegan, Ian Roy, Adam, Laura; great-grandchildren, Aundra and Nemesis Vivian; his siblings Ruth Warman of Leesburg, FL and Dick (Mary Lou) Carlson of Kerkohven; many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his son, Randy, his parents, and his sisters, Hazel Simmonds and Margaret Furlon.
