Mary Ellen Zenker, 72, of Willmar, died Sunday, March 30, 2008 at Rice Memorial Hospital in Willmar. The service will be 11:00 am, Friday at Eagle Lake Lutheran Church in Willmar. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Visitation will be one hour prior to service at the church on Friday. Arrangements are with Harvey Anderson Funeral Home in Willmar.
Mary Ellen was born on November 25, 1935, in Dickey County, North Dakota, the daughter of Everett and Irene (Gemar) Hale. She graduated from Gackle High School in 1954. On January 27, 1956, she was united in marriage to Edmund Zenker in Fargo. Following their marriage, they lived in various states before moving to Westbrook, later to Marshall and in 1988, she settled in Willmar. While living in Marshall she worked as a dispatcher in Lyon County and was a dietary aid at Weiner Hospital.
She was a member of Eagle Lake Lutheran Church in Willmar.
Surviving are her children, Mark (and Jennifer) Zenker of Colorado Springs, CO: Jacqulyn (and special friend, Dennis Richardson) of Willmar; Patty (and special friend, Mario Lopez Jr,) Dworshak of Willmar; son-in-law, Donald Hahn of Walnut Grove; 11 grandchildren, one great granddaughter, two step grandchildren and 2 step great great grandchildren. Also surviving are her brother, Jon (and Bonnie) Hale of Baxter; sister, Barbara Malmberg of Broken Arrow, OK; sister-in-law, Madaline Hale of Alexandria and brother-in-law, Charlie Hankie of Westport, MN.
She was preceded in death by her parents, sons, Steven and Michael; daughter, Peggy Hahn, siblings, Donald Hale and Carol Hankie and granddaughter, Rachel Zenker.

Evon L. Larson , age 87 of Willmar died on Monday, March 31, 2008 at Rice Care Center in Willmar. Funeral will be 10:00 am, Friday at Mamrelund Lutheran Church in Pennock. Burial will be 2:30 pm on Friday at Woodland Hills Memorial Park Cemetery in Mankato. Visitation will be on Thursday from 5-7pm at Harvey Anderson Funeral Home in Willmar and will continue one hour prior to the service at the church on Friday. Memorials are preferred to Mamrelund Lutheran Church or Rice Hospice.Evon was born on August 30, 1920, in Blue Earth County, Mankato, Minnesota, the daughter of Charles and Della Mae (Ritchie) Cochran. She grew up in Mankato and Garden City. She attended school in rural Mankato Dist. 128 and graduated from Garden City High School.
Evon was united in marriage to Albert Rutjes on September 1, 1937, in North Mankato. One son and one daughter where born to this union. They made their home in North Mankato and in 1949, moved to rural Spicer. Albert passed away on October 30, 1960. Evon was united in marriage Henfred W. Larson on June 29, 1963 at Eagle Lake Lutheran Church in Willmar. They moved to their farm north of Pennock and in 1974 moved into Pennock. They shared 34 years of marriage before Henfred died on September 25, 1997. Evon moved to Valley View Apartments in 1999, and became a resident of Rice Care Center in July of 2005. Evon worked at Continental Can Company and Emanuel Hospital in Mankato and Bethesda Country Home in Willmar. She later became a Human Service
Technician at the Willmar Regional Treatment Center for 21 years, retiring in 1982.
Evon was baptized and confirmed at Faith Lutheran Church in Spicer. She was a member of East Norway Lake Lutheran Church and currently Mamrelund Lutheran Church in Pennock where she was active with: WELCA, and quilting. She also volunteered with the Pennock Senior Dinning. Evon was a member of the Eagle's Auxiliary and she and Henfred where named the Pennock Citizens of the Year in 1996.
Evon enjoyed gardening both vegetables and flowers, canning, baking, sewing, and volunteering. Her family remembers the large meals she would prepare over the holidays especially her lefse and Swedish sausage.
Evon died on Monday, March 31, 2008 at Rice Care Center in Willmar at the age of 87 years. She is survived by her children: Janet (Dallas "Tex") Warne of Spicer, Richard "Dick" and (Sandra) Rutjes of Willmar, Howard (Merrelly) Larson of Pennock and Marvin (Ellen) Larson of Willmar; ten grandchildren; 23 great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; and brother Milo Cochran of Florida.
In addition to her husbands, she was preceded in death by her parents; brother Lyle Cochran; and sisters: Marie Neubert and Ione Sargent; and a great-granddaughter and great-grandson. |

Darline Monson, 70 of Willmar, died on Saturday at St. Mary’s Hospital in Rochester. Funeral services will be 1:30 pm Wednesday at the Evangelical Free Church in Willmar with interment at Fairview Cemetery. Friends may call 1 hour prior to services at the church. The family prefers memorials to Hospice or the Evangelical Free Church.
Darline Elsie (Petersen) was born on May 31, 1937 at Marne, Iowa, the daughter of Milo and Elsie (Suhr) Petersen. As a young child their family moved to the Spicer area and Darline graduated from New London High School in 1956.
On February 21, 1959, Darline was united in marriage to Alvin “Bud” Monson at Gausdahl Lutheran Church, rural New London. This union was blessed with one daughter. Following their marriage they lived in the New London and Willmar areas where Darline worked as a Postal Clerk in New London and Willmar Post Offices, retiring in 1977, due to her health.
Her family recalls her hobbies of embroidery, making over 300 dish towels for her family. She enjoyed quilting, making baby quilts for her family to keep. Darline loved to cook and bake, putting together a cookbook so her granddaughters would have some of her favorite recipes.
She attended the Evangelical Free Church in Willmar at the time of her death. Darline had completed reading all through her Bible these past months, a goal she had given herself. During her last days in the hospital, Darline prayed for God to take her home and for His continued loving care of her family.
Surviving is her husband, Alvin “Bud” Monson of Willmar; daughter, Sue Broberg, Willmar; two granddaughters, Heather (and Matthew) Johnson of Coon Rapids and Nichole Broberg of Willmar. Also surviving is her sister, Judy (and Mike) Elliott of Kerkhoven and brother, Delbert (and Barb) Petersen of Nebraska.
She was preceded in death by her parents and sister, Elaine Noethe.

Wilhelmine “Minnie” Streese, age 78 of Belgrade, died Saturday, March 29, 2008 at the St. Cloud Hospital in St. Cloud. Funeral services will be 2:00 p.m. Tuesday, April 1, 2008 at Grace Lutheran Church in Belgrade with Rev. Victor Young officiating. Burial will be in Gausdal Lutheran Church Cemetery. Visitation will be held one hour prior to the services at the church. Arrangements are with the Johnson Funeral Home in Belgrade.
Wilhelmine Streese was born on October 16, 1929 in St. Pankratz, Austria, the daughter of Wilhelm and Cacilia (Ramer) Kletzmeyer. She grew up in Austria where she was baptized, confirmed and attended school. On November 30, 1946, Wilhelmine was united in marriage to John Streese. To this union four sons and one daughter were born. They made their home in Wernstein, Austria, until immigrating to Spicer in 1956. They moved to Belgrade in 1960, where they farmed from 1964 to 1984. Minnie raised her family and worked at the Belgrade Nursing Home, retiring in 1998 after 20 years. Together, Minnie and John were able to share in 37 years of marriage before John’s death on September 23, 1984. Minnie continued to live in Belgrade after John’s death until just recently residing at the Koronis Manor in Paynesville.
Minnie was an active member of Gausdal Lutheran Church where she served in the A.L.C.U. and taught Sunday school. She was also a member of Toot and Tappers of Belgrade.
Minnie died on Saturday, March 29, 2008 at the St. Cloud Hospital at the age of 78. She is survived by her children, Erna (Jack) Kotten of Belgrade, John Streese Jr. of Fargo, Willie (Jackie) of Cocoa, FL. and David Streese (fiancé, Kim Sjoberg) of Spicer; daughter-in-law, Mary Peterson of Paynesville; 9 grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; siblings, Justine Pasler of Austria, Franz Kletzmeyer of Germany and Herman Kletzmeyer of Spearfish, SD; and brother-in-law, Walter Pichler of Austria.
Minnie was preceded in death by her husband; parents; son, Otto, and two brothers, Roman and Wilhelm and sister, Cacilia.

Eleanor Marie (Porter) was born on May 23, 1920, at Iowa City, Iowa, the daughter of William and Mary Kay (Kvach) Porter. She grew up in Minneapolis, graduating from North High School in 1938.
On April 2, 1949, Eleanor was united in marriage to Thomas McPherson at Ascension Catholic Church, Minneapolis. This union was blessed with three daughters. Eleanor worked for Merwin Drug for 45 years, retiring in 1990. They lived in Minneapolis and Robbinsdale until 2000, when they moved to Willmar. Thomas preceded her in death on April 30, 2000.
Eleanor was baptized and confirmed at Ascension Catholic Church and was a member of St. Margaret Mary Catholic Church in Golden Valley at the time of her death. She volunteered at church over the years.
She was a member of American Legion Auxiliary in Robbinsdale.
Her family recalls her hobbies of reading, golfing and bowling. Eleanor was a soft hearted individual and had a love for animals. She would always put the needs of others before her own.
Surviving are her daughters, Kathleen (and Thomas) Breen, Willmar; Patricia McPherson, Coon Rapids; 3 grandsons, Patrick (and Kaylynn) Breen of Green Bay, WI, Michael (and Nicky) Breen of Minneapolis, and Matthew Breen (and his fiancée Christine Graham) of Victoria. Also surviving is her sister, Elizabeth (and Bill) Harris of Ft. Worth, TX.

Dorothy M. Kreuzberger, 92, of Paynesville, died Monday morning, March 24, 2008, at Koronis Manor in Paynesville. A memorial service will be held at a later date. Services are entrusted to Johnson Funeral Home in Paynesville.
Dorothy Mary Kreuzberger was born on February 27, 1916, in Duluth, the daughter of John and Edith Kreuzberger. She graduated from Duluth Central High School. After high school, Dorothy was employed at Duluth Ice and Fuel Co, until her mother became ill. Dorothy became her care giver until the time of her death. In 1953, Dorothy and her father moved to Paynesville where she was a nanny for Dr. Ray and Connie Lindeman and family for many years. She later became a resident of Good Samaritan Center and most recently of Koronis Manor. She was a member of Grace United Methodist Church in Paynesville.
Dorothy passed away on Monday, March 24, 2008 at Koronis Manor in Paynesville. She is survived by her brother, Jim (Doris) Kreuzberger of Overland Park, Kansas; sister, Helen Bluhm of St. Cloud; brother-in-law, Randall Coulson of Orlando, FL; nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents, John and Edith; and twin sister, Doris.

Marvin Swedberg, 87 of Willmar formerly of Plymouth, died on Tuesday, March 18, 2008 at Howard Lake Good Samaritan Home. Memorial service will be 2:00 pm, Saturday, March 29, 2008 at the Willmar Assembly of God. Visitation will be from 12-2pm prior to the service on Saturday. Private burial will be at Fairview Cemetery in Willmar. Memorials preferred to family.
Marvin Andrew Swedberg was born on March 4, 1921 in Aurora, Nebraska, the son of Edward and Naomi (Swanson) Swedberg. He entered the United States Army Air Force in November of 1942. He was stationed in Ice Land and received an Honorable Discharge in November of 1945.
Marvin was united in marriage to Ione Gladys Anderson on June 21, 1947. The couple settled in Plymouth, Minnesota where Marvin worked as an automobile mechanic and retired in 1973. They continued to live in Plymouth and in 2005 moved to Willmar.
Marvin was a member of the Willmar Assembly of God.
On Tuesday, March 18, Marvin passed away at the Howard Lake Good Samaritan Home, where he had been a resident for the last few months.
Marvin is survived by his wife Ione (60 years); children Kathleen (Stan) Sroga, Brian Swedberg, and Bruce (Jamie) Swedberg; 7 grandchildren, relatives, friends.

Nell Tindell, age 98 of Spicer, formerly of Knoxville, TN, died Thursday evening, March 20, 2008 at Bethesda Pleasant View Nursing Home in Willmar. A time of gathering to celebrate Nell’s life will be held from 4 - 6:00 p.m. on Saturday at the Johnson Funeral Home in New London. Funeral services will be held in Knoxville at a later date. Burial will be in Lynhurst Cemetery in Knoxville.
Nellie Irene Tindell was born on October 3, 1909 on the family farm in Knox County, Tennessee, the daughter of Sanford and Pearl Tindell. She grew up on the family farm and attended country grade school and high school in the area. She continued her education at Knoxville Business College. After her schooling she began working for Sears Roebuck as an assistant supervisor in the accounting office for 30 years. She continued living on the farm and was a caregiver to her parents and brother in their later years. She was an active member Central Baptist Church in Knoxville where she taught Bible Study. In 1999 she moved to Spicer and lived with her niece, Patsy and Chuck. While living in Spicer she attended Hope Presbyterian Church.
Nell enjoyed spending time with her nieces and nephews and received great joy and comfort from her church. She was a fantastic gardener and a loving caregiver to her family. She will be greatly missed by her family.
Nell died on Thursday evening, March 20, 2008 at Bethesda Pleasant View Nursing Home in Willmar at the age of 98. She is survived by numerous nieces and nephews.
Nell was preceded in death by her parents; and siblings, Mamie Robinson, C.S. “Bub” Tindell, Eula Robinson and Trula Fabula.

Michael L. Schwandt, age 38 of Staples, formerly of Paynesville, died unexpectedly Thursday, March 20, 2008 at his home in Staples. Funeral services will be 11:00 a.m. Tuesday, March 25 at Paynesville Lutheran Church in Paynesville. Burial will be in the Paynesville Cemetery. Visitation will be Monday from 4-8 p.m. at the Johnson Funeral Home in Paynesville and for one hour prior to the services at the church.
Michael Lee Schwandt was born on March 17, 1970 in Coon Rapids, the son of David and Diane (Jones) Schwandt. He was baptized and confirmed at St. Louis Catholic Church in Paynesville. He grew up in Paynesville where he attended Paynesville Elementary and High School, graduating in 1988. He worked a variety of jobs in the area before starting work with the Paynesville School as a custodian at the elementary. He worked at the school for seven years while he pursued his education in wildlife management. In April of 2007 he moved to Staples to be closer to his fiancé, Shiela and her son, Matthew.
Michael attended Paynesville Lutheran Church and enjoyed hunting, fishing, gardening, animals, camping and spending time with his family and friends. He was especially fond of his relationship and work with his grandpa Hub. Picking on his little sister and the kids in the family was one of his favorite past-times.
Michael died on Thursday, March 20, 2008 at his home in Staples at the age of 38. He is survived by his parents, David and Diane Schwandt of Paynesville; sister, Ann (Tod) Wendlandt of Belgrade; grandmothers, Delores Schwandt of Paynesville and Theresa Gay of Coon Rapids; nephew and godson, Trevor Wendlandt and nieces, April and Amber Wendlandt; and fiancé, Shiela Owen and her son, Matthew of Staples.
Michael was preceded in death by his maternal and paternal grandfathers. |

Elizabeth A. Hild was born July 15, 1920, in Sutton, Nebraska, to Albert and Gertrude Hild. She was one of seven children. She spent her childhood in Fargo, North Dakota, where she graduated high school. Following her subsequent graduation from North Central Bible Institute in Minneapolis, she married Robert M. Abbott in 1944. To this marriage were born two sons, Robert, Jr. (Bob) and William (Bill). This marriage continued nearly 45 years until her husband Bob's death in 1999.
Elizabeth lived her life as a partner in support of her husband's ministry within the Assemblies of God, first in Minnesota -- Two Harbors, Thief River Falls, Alexandria, and Little Falls -- and then traveling throughout the United States as evangelists and children's ministers.
She is survived by her sons and their families: Bob and his wife Ruth of Branson, their children Julia Abbott and her husband Chad Altemose of San Francisco, and Marcus Abbott of Kansas City; and Bill and his wife Anita of Belleville, Michigan, their sons Scott of New York City and Jeremy of Belleville. She is survived also by her brother Paul Hild and his wife Myrtle of Springfield, their daughter Cheryl and her husband David Moore of Clever, and other nieces and nephews. |

Helen R. Sjoberg, 85, of Willmar, died Friday, March 14, 2008 at Rice Memorial Hospital in Willmar. A funeral will be held at 2:00 pm, Tuesday, March 18 at Bethel Lutheran Church in Willmar. Burial will be in Cloverleaf Cemetery. Visitation will be Monday from 5-7 pm at Harvey Anderson Funeral Home in Willmar and continue one hour prior to services at the church on Tuesday.
Helen Ruby was born on September 1, 1922, in Whitefield Township, Kandiyohi County, Minnesota the daughter of Carl and Alma (Nelson) Johnson. She attended rural school in Fahlun Township and graduated from Kerkhoven High School after moving to a farm near Pennock she began working at Habicht’s Department Store in Willmar.
On February 21, 1948, she was united in marriage to Vernon Sjoberg at Mamrelund Lutheran Church in Pennock. Following their marriage, they farmed in Willmar Township, east of Willmar, retiring in 1980. Vernon preceded her in death in 1999 and Helen continued to live on the farm.
She was baptized and confirmed at Svea Evangelical Lutheran Church and was an active member of Bethel Lutheran Church. She also had been involved in a homemaker’s extension group. Helen enjoyed cooking, baking, sewing and her morning coffee club at McDonald’s.
Surviving are her children, Patsy (and Warren) Erickson of Spicer, Alan (and Linda) Sjoberg of New London, Brenda (and Roger) Jergenson of Starbuck; five grandchildren, Crystal, Abraham and Dustin Jergenson, Bethany Erickson and Daniel Biesecker; two great grandchildren, MiKenzee Zins and Mason Beisecker: brother, Barney Johnson of Willmar and brother-in-law, Reuben Sjoberg of Willmar.
Besides her husband and parents, she was preceded in death by her sisters, Elsie Dahl and Hilda Bergstrand and brother, Eddie Johnson.

Marie (Bayer) Stalberger, 96, of Belgrade, died on Thursday morning, March 13, 2008 at the Belgrade Nursing Home. A Funeral Mass will be held at 10:30 A.M. Monday, at St. Francis de Sales Catholic Church in Belgrade. Burial will be held at the church cemetery in Belgrade. A visitation will be held on Sunday, at the Johnson Funeral Home in Belgrade from 5-7:00 P.M., with a Christian Mothers Rosary being prayed at 5:30 P.M., and Parish Prayers at 7:00 P.M. The visitation will continue Monday morning at 9:30 A.M. at the funeral home.
Marie Elizabeth Bayer was born on June 19, 1911, in Elrosa, the daughter of Michael and Anna (Schneider) Bayer. Marie grew up in Elrosa with her four brothers, three step brothers, and three step sisters. She received her education at a rural country school in the area. Marie was baptized as a child at Sts. Peter and Paul Catholic Church in Elrosa, where she also was confirmed into the Christian Faith.
On August 30, 1928, Marie was united in marriage Norbert Stalberger at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in St. Cloud. This union was blessed with four boys and one girl. The family made their home in the Belgrade and Elrosa area. Together Norbert and Marie were able to share in 52 years of marriage before his death in 1981.
While her brothers served their country in World War II, Marie managed and tended bar at the family business (Plug’s Bar) in Elrosa. During the Fifties she worked in Belgrade candling eggs for Glen Taylor. For many years after that, she was a clerk for Maher’s Department Store.
Marie currently was a member of St. Frances de Sales Catholic Church in Belgrade where she was an active member in the Christian Mothers.
Marie enjoyed her family, friends and quilting, having passed along many of them through the generations. She also enjoyed her flower garden and watching the Twins and Vikings.
Marie E. Stalberger died on Thursday morning, March 13, 2008, at the Belgrade Nursing Home, at the age 96. She is survived by her children, Leon (Sandra) Stalberger of DePere WI, and Mary Jo (Dennis) Linder of Belgrade; daughter-in-law, Ruth Stalberger of Belgrade; 15 grandchildren, 19 great grandchildren; 8 great-great grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.
Marie was preceded in death by her husband, Norbert; sons, Donald, James, and Eugene Stalberger; brothers, Leander, Edmund, Joe, and Richard Bayer; step-brothers, Joe, Edwin, and Arthur Kochmann; step-sisters, Hattie Noga, Veronica Clark, and Marie Flicker.

Marten Olson, 91, of Willmar, died Wednesday, March 5, 2008. The funeral will be 11:00 am, Tuesday, March 11, 2008 at Vinje Lutheran Church in Willmar. Burial will be in Cloverleaf Cemetery. Arrangements are with Harvey Anderson Funeral Home in Willmar.
Marten was born on a farm in West Hope Township, Cavalier County, North Dakota on June 30, 1916 to Edwin and Ruth (Payne) Olson. After attending rural schools, he graduated from Langdon High School in 1934. Following his graduation, he studied at the North Dakota State School of Science graduating in 1936 with a degree in printing and journalism. He then worked on newspapers in Clinton, Fergus Falls and Alexandria, Minnesota. He was united in marriage to Nevina Olson on January 5, 1941 at Yellow Medicine Lutheran Church in Hanley Falls. After living briefly in Hanley Falls and Alexandria, they moved to Willmar later that year. Except for the time Marten served in the United States Army Air Force during WW II, they resided in Willmar for the rest of their lives.
Marten was employed by the West Central Tribune as a linotype operator and printer for eighteen years. He then went to work for Maracom/Color Press as foreman, retiring in 1981 after twenty-two years of service. He was an expert on the linotype and made frequent visits to print shops around the state to fix their machines. Marten and Nevina raised their three children in Willmar and were active members of Vinje Lutheran Church where he was a longtime usher and had served on numerous committees. He was active in the Boy Scouts, served Meals-on-Wheels, and was a member of Kandiyohi County Historical Society, Senior Citizens, Sons of Norway and Golden K’s. Marten was an accomplished woodworker and particularly in retirement enjoyed producing numerous crafts.
Surviving are his children, Douglas Olson of Fond du Lac, Wisconsin; Dennis (and Jeannette) Olson of Washington, D.C.; Lois Kennis of Rochester, Minnesota; seven grandchildren, Roxanne (and Michael) Alvarez, Kristina (and Pedro) Arellano, Naydene Olson, David (and Angela) Kennis, Destiny Kennis, Matthew (and Audrey) Kennis, and Harmony Kennis; and four great-grandchildren, Eligh, Malachi, Abigail and Vincent. Also surviving are his brother, Ronald (and Helen) Olson of Langdon, sister, Effie Bingenheimer, of Langdon, sister-in-law, Ruth (and Percy) Idso of Fargo and brother-in-law, Wilbert Melzer of Nelson.
His wife Nevina died June 6, 2005. He was also preceded in death by his parents Edwin and Ruth Olson, his sisters Hazel McFarlane and Rhena Lorenz, and his brother Alden Olson, all of Langdon, ND.

Luverne Edward Elliott was born on November 28, 1919, at Sioux City, Iowa, the son of Glen and Kathleen (Beck) Elliott. Their family moved to Pennock, Minnesota, where Luverne attend school in Pennock, Kerkhoven and Willmar.
On December 30, 1940, Luverne was united in marriage to Hazel Burchill at Kerkhoven Presbyterian Church. This union was blessed with four children. They farmed in rural Murdock from 1940 until 1946 when they moved to rural Kerkhoven where they farmed. In 1979 they retired from farming and moved into Kerkhoven. Luverne worked at Kerkhoven Fertilizer and in 2000 they moved into Willmar.
He was a member of Kerkhoven Presbyterian Church where he had served as a Deacon, Elder, Trustee and usher.
Surviving is his wife, Hazel; children, Derrol Elliott of Young America, Dorothy (and Vic) Poverud, Willmar, and daughter-in-law Marit Elliott of Melrose; eleven grandchildren and seven great grandchildren. Also surviving are his sisters, Opal Peterson, Clara City, Ila Shosten, Detroit Lakes, and Marilyn Wanderscheid of California.
He was preceded in death by his parents; three brothers Donald, Dale and Daryl; two sisters, Urma Valentine and Leona Stiff; two sons, Dennis and David.

Hattie Poortvliet 97, of Willmar and formerly of Roseland, died on Saturday at Rice Care Center. Services will be1:00 pm Wednesday at Roseland Reformed Church, Roseland with interment in the church cemetery. Friends may call on Tuesday from 5 until 8 pm at the Harvey Anderson Funeral Home in Willmar and on Wednesday 1hour prior to services at the church.
Hattie (Knoll) was born on January 11, 1911, on the family farm near Roseland, the daughter of Albert and Alice (Bulthuis) Knoll. She received her education in Roseland Township.
On September 16, 1936, Hattie was united in marriage to Edward Poortvliet at the parsonage of Roseland Reformed Church. This union was blessed with eight children. Following their marriage they lived in Roseland until the early 1940’s when they purchased a farm in rural Roseland. They continued to farm and live on the farm until 1968, when they moved into Roseland. Hattie moved to Rice Care Center in Willmar in 2000. Edward was called home to be with the Lord. on April 18, 2002.
She was a member of Roseland Reformed Church where she taught Sunday School for many years. She was also active with the women’s groups within the church and participated in neighborhood Bible studies.
Hattie loved people and loved her family dearly. She was a great cook and made everything from homemade bread to potato soup to canned meat. She did a great deal of food preservation, both freezing and canning food to provide for her family of 10. In later years, her extended family looked forward to and enjoyed her homemade cooking as well.
Ed and Hattie welcomed everyone who came to their door. Hattie was always up for a good game of Dominoes, King's Corner, or a famous "Spoons" game. She was a very social person and enjoyed a good cup of coffee or tea with family and/or friends. In more recent years, the afternoon coffee at the care center was a highlight in her day. She will be dearly missed.
Hattie went home to be with the Lord on Saturday March 8, 2008, surviving are her children, John (and Ruth) Poortvliet of Roseland, David (and Jan) Poortvliet of Albuquerque, NM, Bob Poortvliet of Comfrey, Alda (and Donelly) Jahnke of Buchanan Dam, TX, Lois Hibbits of Burnsville, Lynn Elm of Bloomington, Gary (and Karen) Poortvliet of Comfrey and Marv Poortvliet of Eagan; 18 grandchildren and 14 great grandchildren.
In addition to her husband Edward, Hattie was preceded in death by her parents, three brothers, five sisters; grandson Joey Poortvliet and son-in-law, Jack Hibbits.

Tillie Bredeson, 93, of Willmar, died Wednesday, March 5, 2008 at Bethesda Pleasant View in Willmar. Funeral services will be 11:00 am Monday at First Reformed Church in Willmar with interment at Bethany Reformed Cemetery in Clara City. Friends may call on Sunday from 4 until 7 pm at Harvey Anderson Funeral Home in Willmar and 1 hour prior to services at the church on Monday.
Tillie (Dannen) was born on May 3, 1914, a twin to Danne and Tillie (Freese) Dannen at Sacred Heart, Minnesota. She lived in Ericson Township until 1922, when their family moved to Rheiderland Township. Tillie attended Dist # 66 for her education.
On February 7, 1935, Tillie was united in marriage to Otis Bredeson at the Bethany Reformed parsonage in Clara City. They farmed nears Sacred Heart until 1948, when they moved to St. John’s Township in Kandiyohi County where they lived until 1973, when they moved into Willmar. Tillie worked at Bethesda and Christian Rest Home as a nurse’s aid, retiring in 1982. Otis preceded her in death on November 20, 1989.
She was baptized and made here affirmation of faith at Bethany Reformed church and was a member of First Reformed Church in Willmar at the time of her death. Tillie had been active with the churchwomen, circle and Bible study.
Tillie served as a 4-H Leader and was a member of homemakers group.
Her family recalls what a gracious hostess was, always having the coffee pot on. She was loved to bake and work in her garden.
Surviving are her children, Dennis (and Ruth) Bredeson, Pennock, Leon (and Karen) Bredeson, Willmar and Carolyn (and Wayne) Agre, New London; eight grandchildren and 17 great grandchildren. Also surviving is her sister, Alma (and Roger) Anderson, Decorah, IA.
In addition to her husband Otis, Tillie was preceded in death by her parents, three brothers, her twin Danne, Cordie and Fred; three sisters, Lena Caspers, Sina Boog and Gertie Dieken.

Curtis Wegner, age 78 of Paynesville, died Friday, February 29, 2008 at St. Mary’s Hospital in Rochester. Funeral services will be 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, March 4, 2008 at Grace United Methodist Church in Paynesville. Burial will be in Salem Cemetery in rural Paynesville. Visitation will be Monday from 5:00 to 8:00 p.m. at the Johnson Funeral Home in Paynesville where there will be a 7:30 prayer service. Visitation will also be held one hour prior to the services at the church.
Curtis Herman Edward Wegner was born on Aug. 28, 1929 to Arnie and Esther (Goltz) Wegner on the family farm in Zion Township of Stearns County where he lived his whole life. He was baptized and confirmed at Salem E.U.B. Church. He attended Harding School near his home and Paynesville High School, graduating in 1946. He continued his education at Westmar College in LeMars, IA, until his mother’s illness prompted his return to the farm to help his father. On Dec. 30, 1950, he was united in marriage to Carol Krause at Immanuel E.U.B. Church in Corcoran. To this union 5 children were born; Vicki, Jean, Laurie, Tim and Lance. He worked hard at making a living to support his growing family by getting involved in various farming enterprises such as raising chickens, beef cattle and milking cows. He also worked outside the farm for many years to supplement the farm. Together, Curt and Carol were able to share in 57 years of marriage.
One of Curt’s passions was for farming and his mind never wandered too far from it, even talking of this years planting season on the day of his death. His love of the farm drew him to be active in promoting agriculture by serving as the Stearns County Farmer’s Union president, and on the Cenex Board of Directors for many years as well as the State Livestock Advisory Board Treasurer.
Curt grew up and raised his family attending Salem Church where he served as a Sunday School teacher and held many leadership positions. After the church closed it remained near and dear to his heart, serving on the Salem Church Cemetery Association and Restoration committee and was president of the Cemetery Board. He also served his community well, as a school board member for the local country school dist. #2028, was the past president of Paynesville Lions Club and a member of the Masonic Lodge in Paynesville. He was an active member of Grace United Methodist Church where he enjoyed singing in the choir and men’s chorus.
Curt died on Friday, Feb. 29, 2008 at St. Mary’s Hospital in Rochester at the age of 78 with his family by his side. He is survived by his wife, Carol; children, Vicki (Vincent) Jenniges of Paynesville, Jean Liestman of Litchfield, Laurie (John) Magnan of Paynesville, Timothy (Sheri) Wegner of Paynesville and Lance (Melanie) Wegner of Chanhassen; fourteen grandchildren, Justin and Ross Jenniges, Jeff (Shelly) Liestman, Jay (Paulette) Liestman, JerriAnn Liestman, Jaime Liestman, Ryan and Josie Magnan, John (Cheyenne) Magnan, Cody Hill, Maria (Kevin) Wegner-Johnson, Kristie Wegner, Danielle and Kyle Wegner; and numerous great-grandchildren.
Curt was preceded in death by his parents and step-mother, Josephine (Larsen)Wegner..

Robert “Bob” Gilbertson, 85, of Willmar, died Friday, February 29, 2008 at Rice Memorial Hospital in Willmar. The funeral will be 11:00 am, Tuesday, March 4, 2008 at Vinje Lutheran Church in Willmar. Burial will be in Cloverleaf Cemetery with Military Honors by American Legion Post #167. Visitation will be Monday from 5-8 pm at Harvey Anderson Funeral Home in Willmar and continue one hour prior to services at the church on Tuesday.
Bob was born on February 28, 1923, in Willmar, MN, the son of Nels and Amy (Pederson) Gilbertson. He grew up on a farm northwest of Eagle Lake, near Willmar and attended country school. He served in the United States Navy during WW II and was honorably discharge. He returned to the Willmar area where he farmed and began his career with Great Northern Railroad. On December 30, 1955, he was united in marriage to Mary Holm in Minneapolis. They lived in Willmar and Bob continued farming and working for the Great Northern, retiring in the late 1980’s. Mary died in 1989. Bob was an active member of the Old Goats, Elks and at Senior Dining Center. In 1998, He was named the Kandiyohi County Senior Citizen of the Year.
Bob was baptized and confirmed at Eagle Lake Lutheran Church and was a dedicated member of Vinje Lutheran in Willmar.
Surviving are his daughter, Ann (and Jerrod) Westphal of Milaca; two granddaughters, Ashley and Lindsey; brothers, Arlo (and Wanda) Gilbertson of Litchfield; Don (and Anne) Gilbertson of Fridley; sister, Alice (and Orville) Gjerde of Willmar; brother-in-law, Donald Johnston of Willmar and special friend, Olga Quale of Willmar.
Besides his wife, he was preceded in death by his parents and sister, Lois.

James R. Towner, age 82 of Willmar, died Saturday, February 23, 2008 at the Belgrade Nursing Home. Memorial services will be 11:00 a. m. Saturday, March 1, 2008 at Living Word Lutheran Church in Prairie Meadow Learning Center in Spicer. Visitation will be held one hour prior to the services at the church. Burial will be at Lake Ripley Cemetery in Litchfield. Funeral arrangements are with the Johnson Funeral Home in New London.
James Richard Towner was born on November 6, 1925 in Morris, MN, the son of James Warren and Gladys (Richards) Towner. He grew up in the Morris area and attended grade school in Dist. #47 and Alberta High School. He was united in marriage to Mildred Johnson. Together they made their home and farmed near Cyrus until moving to Litchfield, where he began working for the Litchfield Public Utilities for seven-teen years, retiring in 1982. Together, James and Mildred were able to share in 50 years of marriage before her death in 1998. On March 6, 1999, James was united in marriage to Janet Eggert Krone. They made their home in New London and Willmar.
James was a former member of the Litchfield Church of Christ Church, where he was baptized on September 22, 1973. He was an active member of the church where he served as vice-chairman of the board, President of Sunday School and filled the pulpit for the pastor from time to time. He was currently a member of Living Word Lutheran Church in Spicer where he had served as former President of the church.
James died on Saturday, February 23, 2008 at the age of 82. He is survived by wife, Janet Towner of Willmar; step-children, Linda (James) Doll of Watkins, Deborah Krone of Eden Valley, Tammy (Daniel) Miller of New London, and Wayne Krone of Cold Spring; nine step-grandchildren; 3 step-great-grandchild; and sister, Shirley (Rudolf) Rath of Alexandria.

Sylvia C. Falk, 73, of Kerkhoven, died Tuesday, February 26, 2008 at St. Cloud Hospital in St. Cloud. The funeral will be 10:30 am, Saturday at Kerkhoven Lutheran Church in Kerkhoven. Visitation will be from 5-8 pm, Friday at Harvey Anderson Kerkhoven Funeral Home in Kerkhoven and continue one hour prior to service at the church on Saturday.
Sylvia was born on December 25, 1934, a twin daughter of Ingvald and Clara (Nelson) Aslakson in rural Starbuck. She was baptized and confirmed at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Starbuck and graduated from Starbuck High School in 1953. She continued her education at the School of Medical Technology in Minneapolis.
On March 2, 1957, she was united in marriage to Arthur Falk in Starbuck. Following their marriage, they lived in Montevideo and Alexandria before settling I Kerkhoven in 1972.
She was a member of Kerkhoven Lutheran Church where she was a member of WELCA, quilters and was a Sunday school teacher.
Surviving are her husband, Arthur Falk of Kerkhoven; son, Richard (and Loretta) Falk of Kerkhoven; Sharyl (and Steve) Syverson of Kerkhoven; Annelle (and special friend, Rod Johnson) Guillemard of Murdock; five grandchildren, Travis and Matthew Falk, Shayla and Shawn Syverson, Victoria Guillemard; brother, Henry (and Beverly) Aslakson of Delano; sister, Carol Bronson of Pearland, TX and sister-in-law, Geneveie Aslakson of Mentor, MN.

Thea Louck, 95, of Willmar died on Wednesday, February 27, 2008, at Bethesda Pleasantview Nursing Home in Willmar. Funeral service will be Saturday at 11:00 am at Vinje Lutheran Church in Willmar. Thea Amanda Louck was born on July 26, 1912 in Mandt Township, Chippewa County, Minnesota, the daughter of Thorvold and Anne (Karlson) Laumb. She grew up in the Montevideo area where she attended school. She worked on the family farm, and on June 21, 1941, she was united in marriage to Clifford Louck at the Mandt Lutheran Church. The couple lived in Wisconsin for a time and returned to the Montevideo area. In 1959, they moved to Kerkhoven, and in 1961, moved to Willmar. Clifford passed away on March 25, 1962. Thea continued to live in Willmar and began working part time at the Willmar Nursing Home and Molenaar Inc.
She was baptized and confirmed in the Lutheran Faith, and was a member of Vinje Lutheran Church in Willmar where she was active in Circle.
She enjoyed crocheting, sewing, and knitting afghans that she would give to her friends and family. She also enjoyed spending time with her family and grandchildren. Thea loved animals and would always have a pet dog or cat.
Thea died on Wednesday, February 27, 2008, at Bethesda Pleasantview Nursing Home in Willmar at the age of 95 years.
She is survived by her son: John Louck of Inver Grove Heights; daughters: Judy Louck of Kandiyohi, JoAnn Hemze of Hudson, WI, Carol (and Charles) Jaspersen of Willmar; 13 grandchildren; 23 great-grandchildren; sisters Emma Koenen of Maynard, Alice Cronen of Clara City, Julia Gunderson of Milan, and Signe Over of St. Paul.

Alvina L. Ruppert, 79 of Clara City died on Wednesday, February 27, 2008 at Rice Memorial Hospital in Willmar. Funeral service will be 10:30 am Saturday at St. Clara’s Catholic Church in Clara City. Visitation will be one hour prior to the service at the church. Arrangements are with Harvey Anderson Funeral Home in Clara City.
Alvina Lucille was born on May 9, 1928, in New London, Minnesota, the daughter of Thomas W. and Lucy E. (Pelkey) Snyder. She grew up in New London where she graduated from New London High School in the class of 1946. She was united in marriage to Axel F. Lindahl in August of 1946. The couple lived in New London and where blessed with three children. She worked at the New London Nursing Home, in the ASCS, FSA office in Willmar, and also worked at PFF group homes and Bethesda Nursing Home in Willmar.
Axel pasted away in 1967. Alvina was united in marriage to Maurice Ruppert on February 28, 1970 in Willmar. The couple lived in Kerkhoven and later moved to Clara City. She and Maurice spent the winter months in Mesa, Arizona. Maurice died on February 28, 2005.
Alvina was baptized and confirmed in the Christian faith. She was currently a member of St. Clara’s Catholic Church in Clara City. She was a member of the VFW Auxiliary.
She enjoyed sewing, knitting, crocheting, embroidery, making many things for her family and friends. She also enjoyed traveling.
Alvina is survived by her daughter Maxine Gish of Roseburg, OR and Wendy Reimann of Stillwater; six grandchildren; sister June Ayotte of Lake Lillian.
She was preceded in death by her husbands, parents, and her son Edward Lindahl.

Dorothy L. Herrmann, 70 of Willmar died Monday, February 25, 2008 at Bethesda Heritage Center in Willmar. Funeral will be 10:00 am on Friday at United Methodist Church in Willmar. Burial will be in Rest Lawn Memorial Gardens in Slayton, Minnesota. Visitation will be Thursday from 5-7pm at Harvey Anderson Funeral Home in Willmar and will continue one hour prior to the service on Friday.
Dorothy L. Herrmann was born on April 21, 1937 in Worthington, Minnesota, to Ralph and Myrtle (Selby) Dickey. She grew up in lived in rural Ruthton / Balaton area. Following her father’s death she moved with her mother to Hayward, CA in 1951 where she graduated from Hayward High School in the class for 1955. She was married to Walter E. Jurgens on September of 1958. Following their marriage they lived in Castro Valley, CA. In 1965 they moved to Oregon living in Roseburg and Gold Hill. Three children where blessed in this union. Dorothy worked as a Medical Transcriptionist. On June 21, 1983 Dorothy was united in marriage to Kenneth Herrmann in Reno, Nevada, they lived in Tracy, MN and in 1986 moved to Willmar. In Willmar she worked in Medical Transcription, Kindlehope, as a counselor at Kandiyohi County Girls Group Home.
Dorothy was baptized and confirmed in the Christian Faith and was very active in the churches she attended, holding offices and as a teacher. She was currently a member of the United Methodist Church in Willmar where she was active in circle and Bible study. She was also a member of Eastern Star and a volunteer at Kandiyohi County Historical Society.
She enjoyed needle work, traveling and collecting things like cookie jars and Bibles. She especially enjoyed spending time with her grandchildren.
On Monday, February 25, 2008, Dorothy died at Bethseda Heritage Center in Willmar at the age of 70 years.
She is survived by her husband Ken Herrmann of Willmar, son: Craig Jurgens of Eugene OR, Cherie (and Chuck) Hunter of Troy, MO, and Janette (and Ron McKenzie) Jurgens of Marshall, MN; eight grandchildren; sisters-in-law: Marie Dicksey of Ava, MO, and Irene Dicksey of Capitola, CA; brother Ned (and Judy) Dickey of Rockford, IL; and sister Marian Herrmann of Selma, OR.
She was preceded in death by her parents, five brothers and a sister. |

Emma Marie “Granny” Hartzburg, 104, of Willmar, died Saturday, February 23, 2008 at Bethesda Heritage Center in Willmar. Funeral service will be 10:00 am, Monday at Bethesda Heritage Center in Willmar. Burial will be in Salem United Church of Christ Cemetery in Westphalia, Indiana. Arrangements are with Harvey Anderson Funeral Home in Willmar.
She was born on January 8, 19004, in Westphalia, IN, the daughter of Sam and Della (Spangler) Wehmeier. She attended school in Westphalia. On January 19, 1924, she was united in marriage to Walter Hartzburg. While living in Indiana, Emma worked as a midwife and during WW II, she worked in an aircraft factory. She had also worked at JC Penney in Martinsville and was the assistant postmaster in Westphalia. Walter died in 1962. In 1968, Emma moved to Willmar, Minnesota to be near her son and family. After moving to Willmar and being bored with retirement Emma began working at Jennie-O-Foods. She officially retired at the age of 80.
While in Westphalia, she was an active member of Salem United Church of Christ, participating in bible studies, ladies aid and choir. Moving to Minnesota allowed her to spend time with her grandchildren and always made big Sunday dinners for her family.
Surviving are her daughter-in-law, Doris Hartzburg of Willmar; five grandchildren, Kathy (and Dale) Klassen of DeGraff, Tony (and Bev) Hartzburg of Willmar; Karen Schneider of Willmar, Kelly (and Brian) Burgdorf of O’Fallon, MO; and Shelly (and Martin) Vigesaa of Moorhead along with ten great grandchildren and five great, great grandchildren.
In addition to her husband, Walter; her son, Robert; daughter, Lois; two great granddaughters and four sisters preceded her in death.

Donald Ordell Brandt, 74, of Willmar, died Thursday at his home. Funeral service will be 1:30 pm, Monday at Vinje Lutheran Church in Willmar. Burial will be in Fairview Cemetery with Military Honors by American Legion Post #167. Visitation will be from 3-5 pm, Sunday at Harvey Anderson Funeral Home and continue one hour prior to services at the church on Monday.
Donald was born on July 28, 1933, in Granite Falls, MN, the son of Albert and Anna (O‘Toole) Brandt. He was baptized in Granite Falls and Confirmed at Rock Valle Lutheran Church in Echo. Donald attended elementary school and graduated from Granite Falls High School in 1951. He then served in the United States Navy, serving during the Korean War on USS Des Moines and was Honorably Discharged in 1956. He then attended the University of Minnesota graduating with a Master’s Degree in Education. On June 18, 1960, he was untied in marriage to Shirley Leegard at Our Saviors Lutheran Church in Leland, Iowa.Donald taught for six years in Little Falls before moving to Willmar in 1967. He taught at Willmar High School for seven years before teaching agriculture at Willmar Vo-Tech, retiring in 1932.
Donald belonged to the following organizations: West Central Ag Sales, Good Sam Camping Club, Twilight Lions, VFW Post #163, American Legion Post #167, Kiwanis, MEA, NEA, Minnesota Vocational Ag Instructors Association and Elks.
Donald enjoyed years of vegetable gardening, golfing, fishing, woodworking and camping, spending 13 years in Arizona. His true love came from his grandchildren and attending as many events as he could.
Surviving are his wife, Shirley; daughters, Renee Jo Brandt of Willmar; Kathleen Ann (and Mike) Welch of Arden Hills; Kari Lynn (and Eric) Hanson of Windom; eight grandchildren and sister, Darlene Harbour of Coon Rapids.
He was preceded in death by his parents.

Vivian I. Bratsch, 80, of Hawick, died on Sunday evening, February 17, 2008, at Rice Memorial Hospital in Willmar. A memorial service will be held at 2:00 PM on Saturday at Zion Irving Lutheran Church in rural Hawick. A visitation will be one hour prior to the service at the church.
Vivian Ione Klemz was born on November 29, 1927, in Silver Creek, the daughter of Charles and Ruth (Sheldon) Klemz. She grew up in rural Still Water where she received her primary education from a district country school. Vivian was baptized and confirmed into the Lutheran Church as a child. On November 29, 1946 Vivian was united in marriage to Merland Bratsch in Reneville. This union was blessed with four sons and five daughters.
The family moved to Hawick in 1985. Vivian was very proud of her home in Hawick, she and her family planted many trees representing great memories in their life. She enjoyed working at the A & W in New London where she was a dining attendant.
Vivian enjoyed life always making the best out of a bad situation. She enjoyed playing cards, putting puzzles together, baking, gardening, canning, bingo, camping, the sound of thunder and watching parades. She especially enjoyed fishing, animals, and her family. Her family will remember her never ending patience, homemade bread, and the great times at family get gatherings.
Vivian I. Bratsch died on Sunday, February 17, 2008 at Rice Memorial Hospital in Willmar at the age of 80. She missed her goal of meeting her newest grandson. Vivian is survived by her children, Dayle (Darlene) of Pennock, Carolyn and Ron of Susanville, CA, Linda (Paul) Batsel of Stockton, CA, Jody (Kimberly) Bratsch of Belgrade, Annette Bratsch of Hawick, Jami (Michael) Solum of Hawick, Tonia (Mark) Danielson of Pennock; 15 grandchildren; 23 great grandchildren; one great great grandchild. Vivian is also survived by her siblings, Iva, Neil, Lloyd, Gladys, Marvin, Jack, and Arlene.
Vivian was preceded in death by her husband, Merland; sons, Elwood and Jason; brothers, Russell, Dayle, and Bud; sisters, Lucille and Judy.

Violet Gudren Stageberg, 96, of Willmar formerly of Madison, died Tuesday at Bethesda Pleasantview in Willmar. Funeral services will be 11:00 am Saturday at Harvey Anderson Funeral Chapel in Willmar. Visitation will be one hour prior to the service at the funeral home. Interment will be at Faith Lutheran Cemetery in Madison, MN.
Violet was born June 14, 1911 in Lac Qui Parle Township, the daughter of George and Marie (Hanson) Nash. She was baptized at Trinity Lutheran Church in Dawson, MN and confirmed at Our Saviors Lutheran Church in rural Montevideo. She attended rural school and Montevideo High School.
Violet was united in marriage to Chester Stageberg of Dawson, on April 5, 1936 and they made their home in Madison. While living in Madison Violet was employed at Ulrich’s Fashion Dress and Gift Shop.
She was an active member of Faith Lutheran Church as a Sunday school teacher, treasurer of the ALCW and Golden Age Group, Circle chairperson, and served on the Altar Committee. She was a charter member and treasurer of the Lac Qui Parle Study Club of Madison, an active member of the American Legion Auxiliary and of the Lac Qui Parle Historical Society of Madison.
After her husband passed away in 1991, Violet moved to Willmar and joined Vinje Lutheran Church.
Surviving are her son, David (and Phyllis) Stageberg of Willmar; three grandsons and 9 great-grandchildren: Paul Stageberg, (Jakob, Thomas and Samuel) of New London; James (and Cheri) Stageberg (Michael, Jenny Lake, and Noah Nash) of Stewartville; and Dr. John (and Christine) Stageberg (Elizabeth, Gabrielle and William) of Pueblo West, CO; brother and several nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, one sister and five brothers.
She dearly loved her family and friends. It was a joy for her to prepare meals and entertain her dearly loved family and friends. Blessed be the memory of Mother, Grandma Violet, Great-grandma, aunt and friend.

Lenora H. Holper, 87, of Paynesville, died on Monday morning, February 18, 2008, at Harmony House in Motley. Mass of Christian Burial will be held 11:00 AM Saturday at St. Louis Catholic Church in Paynesville. Interment will be held at the church cemetery. A visitation will be held on Friday, from 5-8:00 PM, with parish prayers at 6:00 and the Christian Mothers praying the Rosary at 7:00, at the Johnson Funeral Home in Paynesville. The visitation will continue one hour prior to the service at church.
Lenora Haines was born on April 26, 1920 in Paynesville, the daughter of Frank and Margaret (Berg) Haines. She grew up in Paynesville attending Paynesville Elementary and later graduating from Paynesville High School in 1938. After high school she attended a vocational school where she became a Licensed Practical Nurse.
On April 23, 1945 Lenora was united in marriage to Arthur Martin. This union was blessed with one son and one daughter. On June 19, 1950 Lenora was united in marriage to Mark Holper in Paynesville. This union was blessed with two sons and one daughter. The family made their home in Paynesville where Lenora practiced nursing in the area.
Lenora loved babies, during the 60’s she would bring unwed mothers into her home and help them start their baby’s life out on the right foot. Her life was dedicated to taking care of others and she took great pride in do so. Lenora will be remembered as a lady that always made friends wherever she went and travel.
Lenora was a member of St. Louis Catholic Church in Paynesville. She was active in the St. Paul Mission Group and the St. Louis Christian Mothers. Lenora was also active with the Paynesville Senior Citizens. In 2006 Lenora moved to Staples where she became a member of the Sacred Heart Catholic Church. She was active in bible studies there. Lenora was known to always make friends wherever she went and travel.
Lenora Holper died on Monday, February 18, 2008, at the Harmony House in Motley, she was 87. Lenora is survived by her children, J. P. (Linda) Martin of Royalton, Mark J. (Jackie) of Hastings, Frank (Lois) Holper of Onalaska, WI, Margaret (Kevin) Grondahl of Staples; grandchildren, Tina (Rick) Roche, John Martin, Jay (Dana) Martin, Jennifer (Kyle) Rasmussen, Suzanna Holper, Brenton Holper, Laura (Kevin) Myhre, Ryan (Rachel) Holper, Trisha (Dan) Reed, Tim (Angie) Grondahl, Beth Warner, Jacy (Mark) Rice, Travis Warner, Tucker Grondahl, and Nathan Warner. She is also survived by her great grandchildren, Kelsey, Kaitlyn, and Kaylee Roche, Blake Rasmussen, Paige Myhre, Isaac and Olivia Reed, Joey and Kevin Grondahl, Jayce and Conner Martin.

Jeanette Ziehl 80, of Willmar, died on Tuesday morning at Rice Memorial Hospital. Funeral services will be 1:00 pm Saturday at First Reformed Church in Willmar with interment at Bethany Cemetery in Clara City. Friends may call on Friday from 4 until 7 pm at Harvey Anderson Funeral Home in Willmar and 1 hour prior to services at the church on Saturday.
Jeanette (Zimmer) was born on February 9, 1928, in Clara City, Minnesota, the daughter of John and Grace (Brouwer) Zimmer. She grew up on the family farm attending Dist 12 and Clara City High School for her education.
On December 22, 1946, Jeanette was united in marriage to Merlin Ziehl at her parent’s home. Following their marriage they lived on the Ziehl’s farm in rural Raymond. This union was blessed with eleven children. Jeanette had worked at Jennie-O-Foods, the VS Stores and the Clara City Care Center. Merlin retired from farming in 1986, due to his health. They continued to live on the farm until 1997, when they moved to Willmar.
She was baptized at Bunde Reformed and made her affirmation of faith at Bethany Reformed. She was a member of First Reformed in Willmar at the time of her death.
Jeanette’s family recalls her unfailing love and care she gave to Merlin, caring for him in his declining health for over 25 years. Her hobbies included working with crafts, crocheting, quilting, and sharing her creations with her family.
On Tuesday February 19, 2008, Jeanette died at Rice Memorial Hospital at the age of 80 years and 10 days. Surviving are her children, Robert (and Rita) Ziehl, Raymond, Richard (and Sue) Ziehl, Raymond, Judy (and Ed) Mickelson, Atwater, Donna Wirth, Omaha, NE (and Ed) Wirth of Titusville, FL, Dennis Ziehl, Forest Lake, Earl Ziehl, Raymond, Nancy (and Ken) Schak, Forest Lake, Cindy (and Joel) Endres, Fond Du Lac, WI; 17 grandchildren, Rodney, Rick and Robin Ziehl, Stacey Lewis, Lance and Wes Ziehl, Laura Seymour, Amanda Ramquist, Cassandra Freed, Tanya Siragusa, Daniel Mead, Kristi and Ashley Ziehl, Stephanie Sasse, Elisha Ziehl, Nathaniel and Lauren Endres; and 27 great grandchildren.
In addition to her husband Merlin, Jeanette was preceded in death by her parents, three infant children, four brothers, two sisters and grandson, Robert Ziehl Jr.

Bernice Gladys Kallevig was born on September 15, 1919 in Sunburg, Minnesota, the daughter of Bennie and Gina (Evenson) Freese. She grew up in Sunburg where she attended country school. She then began working as a hired farm girl and housekeeper. On June 22, 1941 she was united in marriage to John Kallevig at South Lake Johanna Church near Sunburg. The couple lived and farmed on the north side of Willmar. Bernice was a homemaker and helped on the farm, she also worked part time at Wonderalls, in Willmar. John died on October 25, 1980. Bernice continued to live at her home in Willmar and later became a resident at Prairie Senior Cottages in Willmar.
Bernice was baptized and confirmed in the Lutheran Faith. She was a member of Calvary Lutheran Church in Willmar where she was active in Dovre Circle. She was active in the Sunny Oaks 4-H club and Home Extension. She enjoyed gardening, sewing, crocheting, and cooking for family and friends.
She passed away on Sunday, February 17, 2008 at Bethesda Heritage Center in Willmar at the age of 88 years. She will be greatly missed by her family and friends.
Bernice is survived by her children: Kallman (and Sandra) Kallevig of Willmar, Bruce (and Jeanette) Kallevig of Monticello, Darlene (and Lowell) Higgins of Arizona, Rachel (and Doug) Loven of Spicer, and Jeff (and Cathy) Kallevig of Eden Prairie; numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren; sister, Minnie Zupke; brother, Joseph (and Dorothy) Freese both of Willmar, and other relatives.
In addition to her husband she was preceded in death by her parents, two brothers: Clifford and James Freese and two sisters: Myrtle Sagedal and Ethel Grahn.

Scott Peter Streed, 47, of Ortonville, died Saturday, February 16, 2008 at Bethesda Heritage Center in Willmar losing a battle to Loud Gehrig’s Disease (ALS). Mass of Christian Burial will be 10:30 am, Tuesday at Church of St. John in Ortonville. Burial will be in Mound Cemetery. Visitation will be Monday from 5-7 pm at the church with a Parish Prayer service at 7:00 pm. Visitation will continue one hour prior to services on Tuesday. Arrangements are with Harvey Anderson Funeral Home in Willmar.
Scott was born on July 1, 1960, in Ortonville, MN, the son of Oscar and Jane (Thuesen) Streed. He was baptized at Church of St. John, made his First Communion on June 2, 1968 and was confirmed on April 26, 1976. He attended James Knoll Elementary School and graduated from Ortonville High School in 1978. While in high school, he was active playing the trombone and belonged to the chess club. When he w as 15, through the Boy Scouts of America Pheasant Council, he had the privilege to Climb Mt. Rainier, the highest summit in Washington and one of the three highest summits in the contiguous United States. He continued his education at the University of Minnesota - Morris before enlisting into the United States Coast Guard. Upon his discharge from the coast guard he enlisted in the army and was Honorably Discharged in 1989. He then attended Willmar Community College for a short time.
Scott visited and toured many places while in the service: Guam, France, Switzerland, Italy, French Riviera, Germany, Louisiana and Alaska to name a few. After his discharge, Scott led an independent, free-living lifestyle spending most of his time in the Midwest and western states. His love of animals, whether domestic or wild, his love of hunting and spending time outdoors with nature always led him to his favorite state, Colorado and the Rocky Mountains.
Surviving are his parents, Oscar and Jane Streed of Ortonville; siblings, Michael (and Stephanie) Streed of Billings, MT; Brian (and LuAnn) Streed of Wheaton; Christine (and Paul) Read of Lincoln, NE; Joel (and Jenny) Streed of Parker, CO; John Streed of San Jose, CA; Sue (and Dean VanHout) of Castle Rock, CO; Sara (and Jon) Mathes of Ortonville; Kurt (and Dianna) Streed of Lake City; Eric (and Lisa) Streed of Lakeville and Nathan (and Wendy) Streed of Willmar; 22 nieces and nephews; two great nieces and one great nephew.
He was preceded in death by his grandparents, brother, Jonathan in infancy and niece, Hillary.

Peter J. Hanson, 77 of Raymond, died on Friday at Rice Memorial Hospital. Funeral services will be 2:00 pm Wednesday at Raymond United Methodist Church. Interment will be at Fairview Cemetery in Raymond. Friends may call on Tuesday from 5 until 7 pm at Harvey Anderson Funeral Home in Willmar and on Wednesday 1 hour prior to services at the church.
Peter Joseph Hanson was born on August 15, 1930, at Nimrod, Minnesota, the son of Peder and Margart (Marquardt) Hanson. Their family moved to Nisswa and later to the Kerkhoven area where Peter attended his schooling. On January 24, 1952, Peter was united in marriage to Grace J. Schroeder. This union was blessed with three sons. They lived in Raymond and Peter worked as a mill operator and office staff for Super Sweet Feeds for 28 years. Following his retirement he drove for Vreeman Construction.
He served in the US Army during the Korean War and was a member of the Raymond American Legion.
Pete was a member of Raymond United Methodist Church where he had served as an usher and worked for the church smelt dinner.
Surviving is his wife, Grace; children, Doug (and Deb) Hanson, Atwater, Steve (and Sherry) Hanson, Atwater, and Daniel (and Deb) Hanson of Willmar; 10 grandchildren and three great grandchildren. Also surviving is his sister-in-law, Carol Glimbin of Kerkhoven.
He was preceded in death by his parents and one brother, Hans Hanson.

Sara A. Vogelpohl, 67, of Paynesville, died on Thursday morning, February 14, 2008, at the Koronis Manor in Paynesville. Funeral services will be 11:00 A.M. Monday at the Johnson Funeral Home in Paynesville. Burial will be at a later date. A visitation will be held on Sunday from 2-4:00 P.M. at the Johnson Funeral Home and continue one hour prior to the funeral service.
Sara Ada Clark was born on February 7, 1941, in Paynesville, the daughter of Justin and Lillian (Wagner) Clark. She attended Paynesville Elementary and graduated from Paynesville High School.
On October 26, 1964, Sara was united in marriage to Vernon Vogelpohl in Minneapolis. This union was blessed with two boys and two girls. Their family made their home in Paynesville, where she worked at Good Samaritan Nursing Home. Vernon preceded her in death on August 15, 1998, they shared in 34 years of marriage.
Her children remember her coming home in the morning in time to take them to school, and then being there to pick them up again at the end of the day. Sara enjoyed the tranquility of rural life, she could be found outside working in her flower garden and feeding the birds and squirrels. She also enjoyed arts and crafts, doing needlework, crocheting, quilting, and cross stitching. Sara also enjoyed the time she was able to spend with her grandchildren.
Sara Ada Vogelpohl died on Thursday morning February 14, 2008, at the Koronis Manor in Paynesville at the age of 67. She is survived by her children, Scott Vogelpohl of Sauk Rapids, Tracy (and William) Hickman of Paynesville, Kelly Vogelpohl (and Fiancé, Amanda Lewis) of Paynesville, Mary Vogelpohl of Paynesville; 3 grandchildren. Also surviving is her mother, Lillian Clark, of Paynesville; brothers, Justin Jr. (and Diane) Clark of Southport, NC, Dick Clark of Theodore, AL; sister Karleen (and Melvin) Klein of Austin, TX.

Mildred B. “Milly” Johnson, 88, of Willmar and formerly of Kerkhoven, died on Wednesday at Rice Memorial Hospital. Funeral services will be 2:00 pm Saturday at Salem Covenant Church rural Pennock with interment in the church cemetery. Friends may call from 6:00 – 8:00 pm Friday at Harvey Anderson Funeral Home and 1 hour prior to service at the church on Saturday.
Mildred Bernice (Kendall) was born on August 12, 1919, in Mitchell, South Dakota, the daughter of Marion and Abbigail (Whitney) Kendall. She attended her elementary school at Plans, South Dakota and graduated from Ethan High School in 1934. Mildred continued her education attending Normal Training at Dakota Wesleyan at Mitchell graduating in 1936. Following graduation she taught in the Brookings area until 1941, when she moved to Willmar.
On June 8, 1945, Mildred was united in marriage to Harry Johnson at Willmar, Minnesota. They farmed in Pillsbury Township, Swift County, where they farmed until 1978 when they retired and continued to live on the farm until 1996 when they moved into Kerkhoven . Milly and Harry wintered in Orange Grove, Texas for 25 years. Harry preceded her in death on January 22, 2002. In March 2004, Milly moved to Sunrise Village in Willmar, where she made many new friends and acquaintances.
She was a longtime member of Salem Covenant Church where she taught Sunday School of 45 years and Vacation Bible School, and was a “Mother" to many. Milly had also active with the Covenant Women.
Some of Milly’s favorite times were family gatherings, feeding the many chicken dinner and rice pudding and many coffee times serving her sweets. She also loved to play games with her grandchildren.
Surviving are her children, Ted and Michelle Johnson, Northfield, Lon and Dar Johnson, Waseca, Jerry and Millie Johnson, Bellingham, Washington, Judy and Vern Matheson, North Branch, Loree and Jerry Kruger, Sibley, Iowa, Lynn and George Meister, Lakewood, Colorado, Dan and Cindy Johnson, Plymouth; 20 grandchildren Carrie Johnson, Eric and Nicole Johnson, Dan and Sarah Johnson, Matt and Denise Johnson, Jared Johnson, Josh and Allie Johnson, Ben Johnson, Molly Matheson, Betsy and Justin Symanietz, Judd Matheson, Chip Meister, Andrea and Scott Frohardt, Katrina Meister, Zack Kruger, BreAnna Kruger, Sam Kruger, Laura and Mike Peters, Susan Johnson, Tim Johnson and Andy Johnson and one great granddaughter, Lily Grace Johnson. William Stegeman, age 92 of Willmar died on Thursday, February 7, 2008 at Bethesda Pleasantview Nursing Home in Willmar. Funeral service will be 1:00 pm, Monday at Vinje Lutheran Church in Willmar. Burial will be at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Clara City. Visitation will be on Sunday from 3-6pm at Harvey Anderson Funeral Home in Willmar and will continue one hour prior to the service at the church on Monday. Memorials preferred in lieu of flowers.
William Ukray Stegeman was born on December 30, 1915 in rural Maynard, Minnesota, the son of Jacob and Mamie (Heikes). He grew up in the Maynard and Clara City area where he attended country school. William worked on the family farm. On February 20, 1940 he was united in marriage to Annie Rand at Immanuel Lutheran Church, Clara City. This union was blessed with six children. The couple farmed in the Raymond, Clara City, and Kerkhoven areas until 1971, when William retired from farming. They moved to Willmar and William worked for Standard Lumber, and Willmar Highway Furniture, and also worked with area farmers.
He was baptized and confirmed at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Clara City and was a member of Vinje Lutheran in Willmar.
Annie and William enjoyed traveling out of state to visit family. During the summer they spent their time on the farm near Kerkhoven doing yard work and enjoying the outdoors.
On Tuesday, March 14, 2006, Annie died at Bethesda Pleasantview at the age of 87 years. William continued to live at Sunrise Village in Willmar and entered the nursing home in December 2007 due to failing health.He enjoyed fishing, jigsaw puzzles, and woodworking. He enjoyed spending time with his family and grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

James A. Morris, 78, of Lake Florida, died Saturday morning, February 9, 2008, at his home. Services are 11:00 AM Thursday, at Hope Presbyterian Church in rural Spicer. Burial will be at Oak Hill Cemetery in New London, military honors will be provided by the Spicer American Legion Henderson Lewis Post # 545.
A visitation will be held on Wednesday from 4-7:00 PM at the Johnson Funeral Home in New London and continue one hour prior to the service at the church.
James Allen Morris was born on August 30, 1929, in Minneapolis, the son of John and Irene (McElmurry) Morris. He grew up in South Minneapolis, where he attended and graduated from Roosevelt High School. He continued his education at the University of Minnesota graduating in 1952 with a Bachelors Degree. On January 6, 1953 he entered the United States Army, serving his county in the Counter Intelligence Corp until his honorable discharge on January 5, 1955.
He returned to Minnesota and began teaching industrial arts in Round Lake and Orono, where he met his future wife Barb. Jim and Barbara Johnson were united in marriage on August 9, 1956, at Calvary Lutheran Church in Alexandria. The couple lived in Wayzata until 1960, when they moved to Minnetonka and Jim took over the family business, Fraser Morris Electric.
Jim and Barb were blessed with three boys, John, Dick, and Bill. The family lived in Minnetonka until 1987 when they moved to Minneapolis. Jim retired in 1994 and they moved to their current home on Lake Florida. Together Jim and Barb were able to share in 48 years of marriage.
Jim was a former member of Faith Presbyterian Church in Minnetonka where he served on the Property and Operation and Stewardship Committees. He was currently a member of Hope Presbyterian Church in Spicer where he served on the board of deacons
Jim was a member of the National Electrical Contractors Association, Building Owners and Managers Association of Minneapolis, Ducks Unlimited, NRA, Kiwanis, and the Spicer American Legion # 545.
James Allen Morris died on Saturday, February 9, 2008 at his home on Lake Florida at the age of 78. He is survived by his wife, Barbara; sons, John (and Wendy) of Chula Vista, CA, Dick (and Cindy) of Edina, Bill (and Judi) of Minnetonka; grandchildren, Alexander, Tucker, Fletcher, Ryan, Caitlin, Timothy, and Abigail; and sister, Susan Baumgartner, of Bloomington.

Lester Helgeson, age 93 of St. Michael originally of Sunburg died peacefully at his home in St. Michael on Monday, February 4, 2008. Funeral service will be 11:00 am on Friday at West Lake Lutheran Church in rural Sunburg. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Visitation will be one hour prior to the service at the church on Friday. Arrangements are with Harvey Anderson Funeral Home in Willmar.
Lester Arnold was born on July 7, 1914, in Arctander Township, Kandiyohi County, Minnesota, the son of Norval and N. Marie (Nelson) Helgeson. He grew up in Arctander Township and attended country school. Following his schooling, he helped on the family farm and worked on his uncle, Melvin’s farm. He worked in the Red River Valley before moving to the cities and he went to work for G. M. Stewart Lumber. He was drafted into the United States Army on June 19, 1942 and he was honorably discharged on October 6, 1945. He returned to the cities and continued working for G.M. Stewart Lumber.
On October 6, 1951, he was united in marriage to Connie Norlander in Minneapolis. Lester then began working for US Plywood which he retired from in 1976. For the past 5 years, Lester has been living in St. Michael MN with his son, Danial where he has taken great joy in watching his twin granddaughters grow.
He was baptized and confirmed at West Lake Lutheran Church, rural Sunburg. Lester enjoyed hunting, fishing, trapping and spending time outdoors. He enjoyed collecting traps and tinkering on lawn mowers, small engines and many kinds of fixit projects.
Surviving are his children, Cheryl Helgeson of Spring Lake Park; Danial (and Ginny) Helgeson of St. Michael; Kenneth Helgeson of Brooklyn Park; two grandchildren, Sarah and Connie; siblings, Mildred Call and Verna Wright both of Willmar and Ardis Mullis of Mahtomedi.
He was preceded in death by his parents, spouse, twin sons Donald and David, three brothers; Loren, Myron and Walter and sisters, Helen Braaten, Frances Helgeson, Gladys Braaten, Lillian Burger, Ruth Aguire and Avis Knutson.

Michael was born on June 29, 1969, in Elgin, Illinois, the son of Bernard and Pamela (Pfrunder) Tjaden. When he was in the sixth grade their family moved to the Willmar area where he completed his schooling. He has been employed as a farm manager for Willmar Poultry for the past 19 years.
He was an avid Packers and NASCAR fan. Michael enjoyed bowling, fishing, cooking and grilling. He had a special place in his heart for his dogs.
Surviving are his children, Heather Tjaden, Justin Tjaden and Bailey Swanson all of Willmar; fiancée, Dawn J. Meyer of Willmar and grandson, Collin Peterson. Also surviving are his parents; Ben and Bonnie Tjaden of Kerkhoven, Pamela Tjaden of Rowland Heights, CA, Betty Tjaden of Willmar and siblings, Jeff (and Lori) Tjaden of Sunburg, Charles (and Beth) Arends of Willmar, William Tjaden of Willmar, Liz Tjaden (and fiancé, Randy Pederson) of Lake Lillian, Leann Tjaden of Willmar, paternal grandmother, Ruth Tjaden of Renville and numerous nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his paternal grandfather, John Tjaden; grandson, Gabriel Antonio Salazar, Jr; and uncles, Burdean and Byron Tjaden, aunt, Jeanette Himmelspach and two uncles in infancy.

Evelyn H. Benson, 97, of Kerkhoven, died on Sunday at Rice Care Center. Funeral services will be 1:00 pm on Wednesday at Kerkhoven Evangelical Free Church with interment in Hillside Cemetery. Friends may call on Wednesday from 11:00 am until time of service at the church. Harvey Anderson Funeral Home Kerkhoven Chapel is handling arrangements.
Evelyn Hilder (Lindquist) was born on November 10, 1910, at Gowrie, Iowa, one of ten children born to Swedish Immigrants Herman and Anna Sofia (Andersson) Lindquist. In 1913 their family moved to Swift County, Minnesota. Evelyn attended her schooling in Kerkhoven. When she was a young girl, Evelyn had to help raise her younger siblings following the death of their mother.
On January 26, 1936, Evelyn was united in marriage to Paul Benson at Murdock, Minnesota. Following their marriage they farmed in Mamre Township and this union was blessed with four children. Paul preceded her in death on December 27, 1964. Evelyn continued to live on the farm near in Kerkhoven where she worked in the dietary department of Lindberg Home for a number of years.
She was baptized at Gowrie, Iowa and confirmed at Bethesda Lutheran Church, rural Murdock and was a member of Kerkhoven Evangelical Free Church at the time of her death. She had been active with the churchwomen.
She will be remembered for having a heart of a servant. Evelyn was a gracious hostess and looked forward to sharing her home with company. Her hobbies included gardening, both flowers and vegetables. She had a green thumb, making everything she touched flourish. Evelyn enjoyed sewing, cooking, quilting, doing puzzles and cooking.
On Sunday February 3, 2008. Evelyn died at Rice Care Center at the age of 97 years. Surviving is her daughter, Ellen Benson and Larry Snodgrass of Arvada, CO; seven grandchildren; ten great grandchildren and one great great granddaughter. Also surviving are several nieces and nephews.
In addition to her husband, Paul, she was preceded in death by her parents; children, Pauline Benson, Curtis Benson and Carol Shaske; two brothers, Lawrence and Ernest Lindquist; and seven sisters, Esther Anderson, Minnie Neal, Lillian Dougherty, Ellen Silgen, Edith Lindquist, Hildur Lindquist and Ethel Easley.

Agueda Cavazos 68, of Willmar and formerly of Texas and Mexico, died on Friday at Infinia at Willmar. Private services will be held.
Agueda was born on August 8, 1939 in San Carlo’s Mexico, the daughter of Rosendo and Leonor Martinez. As a young girl her family moved to Texas. She was united in marriage to Jose I. Cavazos, this union was blessed with eight children. They moved to Minnesota in 1994. She was raised in the catholic faith.
Surviving is her husband; children, Irene (and Roberto) Rodriguez of Mexico, Luz Marie Cavazos (and Antonio) of Mexico, Martha (and Luzino) Ramirez of Fort Lupton, CO, Ray Cavazos of Willmar, Belinda Cavazos of Willmar, Jose A. (and Katherine) Cavazos of Mobile, AL, Blanca Cavazos of Willmar and Angel R. Cavazos of Coleman, FL; 13 grandchildren and 20 great grandchildren. Also surviving are her brothers and sisters in TX, CO and CA.

John F. Maguire, age 89 of New London, died Tuesday morning, January 29, 2008 at Hennepin County Medical Center in Minneapolis. Funeral services will be 11:00 a.m. Saturday, February 2, 2008 at Peace Lutheran Church in New London. Visitation will be held one hour prior to the services at church. Burial will be in the Minnesota State Veterans Cemetery in Little Falls. Arrangements are with the Johnson Funeral Home in New London.
John Francis Maguire was born on January 29, 1919, in Glasgow, Montana, the son of George and Agnes (Oborn) Maguire. He grew up spending his winters in Glasgow and summers on a ranch 70 miles south of Glasgow, along the Missouri River, until it was flooded out in 1936 for the Fort Peck Dam. He attended Glasgow High School, graduating in 1939. On June 18, 1949, John was united in marriage to Signe Marguerite Diesen in Glasgow. To this union one daughter was born. They made their home in Glasgow for several years before moving to Minneapolis and later Granite Falls in 1960. John began a long career in the military in 1940 by volunteering in the National Guard and later enlisting in the United States Army after the attack on Pearl Harbor. He served in England during WWII and later in the reserves, being recalled to active duty during the Korean Conflict and was stationed at Edwards Air Force Base. He remained in the reserves until his full retirement as a Sergeant First Class on January 29, 1979, spending 38 ½ years serving his country and receiving numerous medals and awards.
John’s civilian employment included many years as an auto body repairman and a few years as a metal lathe operator before working for the City of Granite Falls as the city’s Assessor and building inspector. After his retirement, John and Signe enjoyed many years of traveling, often picking a direction and heading out with their camper, and checking in every Sunday from somewhere in the United States. They were able to travel through the 48 contiguous states in their retirement.
In 1994, John and Signe moved to New London to be closer to their daughter, Mel and three grandchildren. This gave John “grandpa” a new job, driving the kids to and from all their activities and taking care of their pets.
John loved to read, spend time with his family, spend countless hours working on crossword puzzles. He also enjoyed woodworking and was known as quite a craftsman. His last day at home was spent making a picture frame in his workshop.
John died on Tuesday morning, January 29, 2008 at Hennepin County Medical Center in Minneapolis on his 89th birthday with his family by his side. He is survived by his wife of 58 years, Signe; daughter, Melodie (Stuart) Haats of New London and three grandchildren, Christin (Wes) Rutgers, Justin Haats and Stephanie Haats.

Ervin Reck, 89 of Willmar, died on Tuesday evening at his home. Funeral services will be 11:00 am Saturday at Redeemer Lutheran Church in Willmar, with interment at Fort Snelling National Cemetery in Minneapolis. Friends may call on Saturday 1 hour prior to services at the church. Arrangements are with Harvey Anderson Funeral Home.
Ervin Emil Reck was born on November 28, 1918, at Cavalier, North Dakota, the son of Walter and Ella (Brietkreutz) Reck. He attended his schooling in Cavalier.
On March 26, 1941, Ervin was inducted into the US Army where he served until May 10, 1943. He was a member of America Legion Post #167 in Willmar and the DAV at the time of his death.
On February 9, 1942, Ervin was united in marriage to Lillian Sluka in Willmar, Minnesota while he was home of furlough from the Army. Following his discharge in 1943, they lived in St. Paul where Ervin worked at Speed – O – Laq Paint Factory, retiring in 1982, after 40 years of employment. Following his retirement they moved to Willmar.
He was a member of Redeemer Lutheran Church where he faithfully worshiped.
Ervin enjoyed the outdoors, hunting and fishing and most of all caring for his lawn and garden.
Surviving is his loving wife of 65 years, Lillian; siblings, Leonard Reck of Redwood Falls, Merle Reck of Borup, Virgil Reck of Florida, Robert Reck of Colorado, Joyce Scott of Las Vegas, NV, and Betty Reck of Oregon. Also surviving are many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, brother, Willard and sister Pearl.

Glen H. Arndt age 83 of Willmar died on Tuesday, January 22, 2008 at Bethesda Pleasantview Nursing Home in Willmar. Funeral service will be 10am on Saturday at Bethesda Pleasantview in Willmar. Burial will be at St. Aloysius Cemetery in Olivia. Visitation will begin 9:30 am prior to the service at the Nursing Home.
Glen H. Arndt was born on December 7, 1924 in Lac qui Parle County, Minnesota, the son of Richard and Elizabeth (Ell) Arndt. He grew up in the Lac qui Parle area where he attended school.
Glen was united in marriage to Shirley Vavricka on March 4, 1968 in Watertown, South Dakota. The couple lived in Willmar where Glen worked as a truck driver, at the lumberyard and also worked at Jennie-O Foods. Shirley died on September 8, 2004. Glen later became a resident of Bethesda Pleasantview Nursing Home in Willmar.
He enjoyed visiting with friends and was very proud of his daughter and granddaughter.
He is survived by his daughter, Cathryn Proulx; granddaughter, Lauren, sister-in-law, Cecile Vavricka, and other nieces and nephews. He is also survived by longtime friend and special helper Brenda Negen.
In addition to his wife, he was preceded in death by his parents, and three sisters: Mildred Arndt, Edna Anderson, and Gladys Reistdorf.

Eileen E. Gratz, 76, of Willmar, died Tuesday, January 22, 2008 at Bethesda Heritage Center in Willmar. Funeral services will be 10:30 am, Saturday, January 26, 2008 at Ebenezer Lutheran Church in Kandiyohi. Burial will be in St. John’s Lutheran Cemetery in Atwater. Visitation will be 5-8 pm, Friday at the church and continue one hour prior to services at the church on Saturday.
Eileen was born on June 25, 1931, in Brownton, MN, the daughter of Herman and Elsie (Rademacher) Schmidt. She attended District 31, country school and graduated from Brownton High School in 1948. She continued to live in Brownton and on August 12, 1951, she was united in marriage to Richard “Dick” Gratz at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Brownton. They lived in LeSueur until moving to Atwater in 1957 when they starting farming. They lived in Kandiyohi from 1960 and continued to farm until 1976 when they moved into Willmar. She had worked in housekeeping at Bethesda Heritage Center for 16 years before retiring in 1991. She had been a 4-H leader and enjoyed bowling in a league.
Eileen was baptized and confirmed at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Brownton and was a member of Ebenezer Lutheran Church where she had been a Sunday school teacher, confirmation teacher and served on the Altar Committee.
Surviving are her husband, Richard “Dick” of Willmar; children, Doug Gratz of Kandiyohi; Konnie (and Lee) Carity of Atwater; Debra (and Wayne) Odland; six grandchildren, Melissa (and fiancé, Josh Strommer) Gratz, Sara (and V. Jon) Carlson, Amy and Kristy Carity, Laura and Wade Odland; siblings, Ruth (and Bob) Fredrickson of Hector; Marilyn (and Ron) Sell of Glencoe; Lloyd (and Pat) Schmidt of Brownton; Barb (and Chuck) Peik of Gaylord; Judy (and Dale) Schumann of Hutchinson and sister-in-law, JoAnn Schmidt of Glencoe.
Besides her parents, preceding her in death were her son, Tom and brothers, Howard and Earl.

Sylvester Walz, 83, of Belgrade, died Monday morning, January 21, 2008, at the Country Manor Nursing Home in Sartell. Funeral Mass will be 11:00 a.m. Monday at Sts. Peter and Paul in Elrosa. A visitation will be held on Sunday from 4-8:00 pm at the Johnson Funeral Home in Belgrade. Christian Women will pray the rosary Sunday at 5:30 pm and parish prayers at 7:30 pm. The visitation will continue on Monday one hour prior to the service at the church.
Sylvester Walz was born December 29, 1924 in Lake George Township, Stearns County on his parent’s farm. He was the son of Joseph and Caroline (Deters) Walz. He served in the army during WWII. He married Florentine Eibensteiner on April 29, 1947. The couple farmed near Belgrade until 1989. Sylvester continued to live on the farm until September 2004 when he became a resident of Country Manor, Sartell.
Sylvester loved his family, farming, old time music, woodworking, western movies and playing cards. He always had music in his heart and a song on his lips. He was a member of Sts. Peter and Paul’s Church in Elrosa and the Saboe-Leverson VFW Post 1825 in Belgrade.
Survivors include his children, Judy (Ron) Shank of St. Cloud, Joan (Robert) Hursh of Edina, Jacqueline Walz of Waite Park, Juanita Shinnick of Irvine CA, Steven (Doris) Walz of Belgrade, Joyce (Scott Buchholz) Walz of St. Cloud; grandchildren, Kevin Shank, Kelly Diefenderfer, Alyssa and Elliot Hursh, Kaitlynn Buchholz, Zachary and Matthew Walz. He is also survived by his sister, Bertha Duke of Arizona.
Sylvester was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Florentine Walz, on September 4, 1992; grandson, Keith Shank, on June 19, 2006; sister, Martha Felling; and brothers, Joe, Frank, Pete, Eddie, Mike, Buddy, Lindy and Ray.

Max Kienitz, age 85 of Raymond died on Sunday, January 20, 2008 at the Infinia Care Center in Willmar. Funeral service will be 10:30 am on Thursday at Redeemer Lutheran Church in Willmar. Visitation will be from 5-7pm on Wednesday at Harvey Anderson Funeral Home in Willmar and will continue one hour prior to the service at the church on Thursday.
Max Robert Otto Kienitz was born on February 21, 1922 in Edwards Township, Kandiyohi County, Minnesota, the son of John and Emma (Mielke) Kienitz. He grew up in the Raymond area where he attended country school district 74 and graduated from Raymond High School in 1940. Max worked on the family farm and later took over the farming business. He later began raising Arabian horses.
Max was baptized and confirmed at Trinity Lutheran Church in Raymond where he was active as president of the church and also served on the cemetery board. He was a founding member of the Amigo Saddle Club and worked with Arabian horse shows throughout the U.S. calling pedigrees.
In addition to raising horses, Max enjoyed, gardening, fishing, and visiting with friends.
He is survived by his brother, Alfred of Emmett, Idaho and sister, Helen Wrase of Windom; two nieces; two nephews and other relatives. Max was preceded in death by his parents and brother George.

Jerry F. Kennedy, age 66 of Paynesville, died Thursday afternoon, January 17, 2008 at the St. Cloud Hospital. Mass of Christian Burial will be 11:00 a.m. Tuesday, January 22, 2008 at St. Louis Catholic Church in Paynesville. Burial will be in Sacred Heart Catholic Cemetery in Murdock. Visitation will be Monday from 5:00 to 8:00 p.m. at St. Louis Catholic Church in Paynesville, where the visitation will conclude with a 8:00 p.m. Parish Prayer Service. Visitation will continue on Tuesday for one hour prior to the services at the church. In lieu of flowers, memorials are preferred. Arrangements are with the Johnson Funeral Home in Paynesville.
Gerald Francis Kennedy was born on January 27, 1941, in Benson, the son of John and Ann (Pothen) Kennedy. He was baptized and confirmed at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Murdock. He grew up on the family farm near Murdock where he attended Murdock High School, graduating in 1959. On December 4, 1959, he entered the United States Army and was stationed in Germany for two years before his honorable discharge on February 19, 1962. He returned home and on November 3, 1962 was united in marriage to Marlene Krattenmaker at Sacred Heart Catholic Church. To this union three sons and one daughter were born. They made their home in Minneapolis where Jerry worked in manufacturing. In 1965 he began his career with UPS and lived in many communities throughout Minnesota, before retiring as a division manager in 1995. They moved to Paynesville in their retirement and he continued to work, raising horses on their farm and working at the Johnson Funeral Home. Together, Jerry and Marlene were able to share in 45 years of marriage. Jerry was a member of St. Louis Catholic Church in Paynesville. He was also a member of the Paynesville Lions Club, who where instrumental in helping him obtain his companion, Dakato from the Leader Dog School.
Jerry enjoyed raising horses, farming, spending time outside and spending time with his family, especially his grandchildren. His joy for life, loving nature and positive attitude through his many adversities has been an inspiration to all who knew him.
Jerry died on Thursday afternoon, January 17, 2008 at the St. Cloud Hospital at the age of 66. He is survived by wife, Marlene; children, Jerry (Lorraine) Kennedy of Lakeville, Shawn (Denise) Kennedy of Adams, Corey Kennedy of Farmington and Jessica (Jeff) Hunt of Paynesville; mother, Ann Kennedy of Pine City; nine grandchildren; siblings, Richard (Deanne) Kennedy of Herman, Kay (Dave) Frederickson of Roseville, Mary Sorenson of Minneapolis, Rita Kennedy of Hinckley, Rose Hauge of Brainerd, and John (Janet) Kennedy of Spicer; special nephew, Mike Kattenmaker of St. Joseph; his leader dog, Dakota; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Jerry was preceded in death by his father, John.

Barbara Zenner, age 99, of Belgrade, died Sunday afternoon, January 13, 2008, at the Belgrade Nursing Home. Mass of Christian Burial will be 10:30 a.m. Saturday, January 19, 2008 at St. Francis de Sales Catholic Church in Belgrade. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Visitation will be 5:00 to 8:00 p.m. Friday at the Johnson Funeral Home in Belgrade where there will be a 5:30 p.m. Christian Mothers Rosary and a 7:30 p.m. Parish Prayer Service. Visitation will continue on Saturday for one hour prior to the service at the church.
Barbara Margaret Zenner was born on Dec. 4, 1908 on the family farm near Pierz, MN, the daughter of Joseph and Mary Hoheisel. She was baptized and confirmed at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church and attended country grade school in the area through the 8th grade. On Sept 29, 1931, Barbara was united in marriage to Leo Zenner at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church. To this union ten children were born. They farmed near Elrosa for three years before moving to the farm southeast of Belgrade. Barbara helped farm and worked as a homemaker until their retirement in 1969 when they moved into Belgrade. Together, Barbara and Leo were able to share in 56 years of marriage before Leo’s death on Feb. 25, 1988. Barbara continued to live at her home in Belgrade before moving to the Belgrade Nursing Home in Feb. of 2005.
Barbara was an active member of St. Francis de Sales Catholic Church where she was a member of the Christian Mothers. While her children were home, she was active in 4-H and Homemakers Club. In her later years, she enjoyed volunteering throughout the community and was often seen helping at the nursing home and food shelf. She enjoyed quilting, gardening, cooking, canning and playing cards. The center of her life was her family, and she especially enjoyed spending time with her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Barbara died on Jan. 13, 2008 at the Belgrade Nursing Home at the age of 99. She is survived by nine children: Virginia (Maynard) Meierhofer of Ripon, WI, Shirley (Albin) Lipold of The Villages, FL, LeRoy (Yvonne) Zenner of Richmond, MN, Elizabeth (Anthony) Waggoner of Northglenn, CO, Robert (Kathy) Zenner of Belgrade, MN, Florence Sheesley (Gerald Shamla) of St. Joseph, MN Dennis (Colleen) Zenner of Lowry, MN, Gary Zenner of Cottage Grove, MN, and Mary Sagedahl of Burlington, IL; Daughter-in-law, Sue (Leon) Weiner of Belgrade; 54 grandchildren; 63 great-grandchildren; and sister Hildegard Bujalski of Pierz, MN.
Barbara was preceded in death by husband, Leo; son, Steven; son-in-law, Arlen Sheesley; and grandchildren, Barbara Meierhofer, Jackie and Angela Zenner, and Amy Waggoner.

Roy Krueger, age 90 of Willmar formerly of Kerkhoven, died on Monday, January 14, 2008 at Infinia Healthcare Center in Willmar. Roy Otto Jerold Krueger was born on January 15, 1917 in Good Thunder, Blue Earth County, Minnesota. The son of Otto A. and Mildred M. (Buckles) Krueger. He lived in Garden City, Minnesota where he graduated from High School in 1935, following graduation he attended barber school. He then worked for the Civilian Conservation Corps.
On September 1, 1940 he was united in marriage to Adeline Wiks. The couple lived one year in Garden City before moving to Kerkhoven. This union was blessed with three children: Viva, Mary and Jerry. Roy barbered with Oscar Nybakke in Kerkhoven before entering the US Army in the Infantry serving in WWII overseas in Germany, France and England. Following his discharge he returned to Kerkhoven and worked for Johnson Machine and Williams Implement before opening up his own barber shop in 1955. He barbered for 60 years. Adeline and Roy enjoyed 54 years of marriage, Adeline passed away on November 27, 1994.
He was united in marriage to Anne Kaliher in Willmar on August 21, 2000. They lived in Willmar.
Roy was a member of Kerkhoven Lutheran Church where he served as usher and other offices including chairman of the 100th Anniversary Committee.
He was a 60 year member and past commander of the Brendon-Johnson Post # 223 in Kerkhoven where he served on the Color Guard and was a member of the Willmar V.F.W. He was an active member of Kerkhoven serving as Mayor, baseball manager of the PeeWee league, played town baseball, and had his own bowling team. He enjoyed all sports. Roy also enjoyed spending time with his grandkids and his big thrill was to interview them on tapes to find their activities and interests. His favorite was vanilla ice cream and moms “red” cake. His family remembers Roy always saying “Ya-do.”
Roy is survived by his second wife Anne Kaliher of Willmar, daughter Viva (Jerry) Lundberg of Kerkhoven; eight grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; and a great-great-granddaughter.
In addition to his first wife, he was preceded death by his parents, daughter Mary Gabbert in 1986 and son Jerry Krueger on 2006; four sisters; and a brother. He was a wonderful husband, father and friend and will be missed by all who knew him.

A funeral service will be 11:00 am, Thursday, January 17, 2008 at Tripolis Lutheran Church, rural Kandiyohi. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Visitation will be from 5-8 pm, Wednesday at Harvey Anderson Funeral Home in Willmar and continue one hour prior to services at the church on Thursday.
Elaine was born on October 15, 1920, in Svea, MN, the daughter of John and Hilma (Freed) Anderson. She grew up in Svea attending elementary school near Svea and graduated from Willmar High School in 1939. She worked as a homemaker and stayed home to care for her mother following her illness.
On January 25, 1947, she was united in marriage to Glenn Carlson at Svea Lutheran Church. Following their marriage, they lived and farmed in Fahlun Township, until moving into Sunrise Assisted Living on October 1, 2004.
Elaine was baptized on November 7, 1920 and confirmed on April 21, 1935 at Svea Lutheran Church. After they were married, she transferred her membership to Tripolis Lutheran Church, rural Kandiyohi. She had been President, secretary and treasurer of WELCA several times, Sunday School Superintendent for five years, Circle Chair for several years, Call Committee, Secretary of Mended Hearts for two years and served on other committees as well. She also had been a 4-H leader several times and a member of Wide Awake Birthday Club, serving as President and Secretary/Treasurer several times. Elaine loved to sing and play the piano, participating in many, many, funerals, weddings, baptisms and other events. She enjoyed making corsages for weddings and showers and she made many baby quilts too. Elaine was well known for her writing of prose and tributes.

Gladys I. Smedstad, 86, of New London, died on Tuesday morning, January 8, 2008, at GlenOaks Care Center, in New London. A memorial service will be held at 11:00 a.m. Saturday, at Peace Lutheran Church in New London. Inurnment will be 4:00 p.m. Friday, January 11, at Bethlehem Lutheran Church in St. Cloud. A gathering of friends and family will be held on Saturday, at Peace Lutheran Church in New London one hour prior to the service.
Gladys Irene Smedstad was born on May 21, 1921, in Starbuck Minnesota the daughter of Bennie and Emma (Kirkevold) Smedstad. She was baptized and confirmed into the Christian faith at Indherred Lutheran Church in Starbuck. Gladys grew up in Starbuck where she graduated from Starbuck High School in 1939. After high school she moved to Minneapolis where she worked at the Gene Wilson Insurance Agency as a secretary. In 1955 Gladys moved to St. Cloud where she was the secretary and office manager for Bethlehem Lutheran Church. In 1978 she was commissioned to the Lay Roster of the American Lutheran Church, later known as an AIM (Associate in Ministry) in the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America, and continued working at the church until her retirement in 1988. She moved to New London in 1998 to be closer to niece, Mary Miller, and in 2001 moved to GlenOaks Care Center, New London, where she lived until her death.
Gladys was a member of Bethlehem Lutheran Church in St. Cloud for over 30 years and a current member of Peace Lutheran Church in New London. She was very active there participating in Bible studies, Ladies aid, Circle, and Christian Service Day. Gladys enjoyed her church homes of Bethlehem and Peace, and also traveling with friends and family.
Gladys I. Smedstad died on Tuesday, January 08, 2008, at GlenOaks Care Center in New London at the age of 86. She is survived by a special niece, Mary (Bill) Miller of New London; special great nephews, Jeff, Matt, and Mark Miller; and many nieces, nephews, and friends.
Gladys was preceded in death by her parents, Bennie and Emma Smedstad; six brothers and one sister.

Jake O. DuHoux 83, of Willmar, died on Thursday at Rice Memorial Hospital. Funeral services will be 11:00 am Monday at Harvey Anderson Funeral Home Chapel in Willmar, with interment at St. John’s Lutheran Cemetery, rural Pennock. Friends may call on Sunday from 3 until 6 pm at St. John’s Lutheran Church rural Pennock and on Monday 1 hour prior to services at the Funeral Home.
Jake Oliver DuHoux was born on May 29. 1924, in Crooks Township, Renville County, Minnesota, the son of Louis J. and Rose (Card) DuHoux. When he was nine their family moved to St. John’s Township in Kandiyohi County where he attended Dist #45 for his education.
On April 1, 1945, Jake was united in marriage to Phyllis Edwardson at Willmar, Minnesota. This union was blessed with six children. Following their marriage they farmed in The St. John’s Lake area. Phyllis preceded him in death on July 3, 1995. Jake retired from farming in the early 1990’s and continued to live on the farm up until the time of his death. Following his retirement Jake enjoyed working at Sunny Side Apple Orchard.
He was a member of St. John’s Lutheran Church where he had served on the church council and ushered.
Jake served in the US Army during WW II in the Rainbow Division. He was a member of the American Legion and VFW. He continued to correspond with many of his Army friends over the years.
His family recalls Jake’s hobbies of woodworking, gardening and reading history, especially about WWII. His family remembers what a hard worker he was. Jake enjoyed repairing his machinery on the farm.
Surviving are his children, Linda (and Gayle) Larson of Willmar, Carol (and Douglas) Thompson of Baxter, Richard DuHoux of Clara City, Jacquelyn (and Mark) Holper of Hastings, Sandra (and LeRoy) Abbas of Portland, ND, and Wayne (and Christine) DuHoux of Cold Spring; 13 grandchildren, 11 great grandchildren, David( and Simone’) Larson and Charlotte; Andrea (and Dan) Moist and Christopher; Matthew (and Jamie) Thompson and Ethan, Alyssa and Izac; Mitchell (and Lisa) Thompson; Michael (and Chrissy) Thompson and Brianna, Akeyela, Tyler, Adien and Christian; Jennifer (and Kyle) Rasmussen and Blake; Suzanna Holper; Brenton Holper; Nicholas Abbas; Shawn Abbas; Matty Rose DuHoux; Holly Jean DuHoux and Tracy DuHoux. Also surviving are his siblings, Jeanne Tollefson of Sunburg, Jeannette Aasen of Willmar, Jimmie (and Betty) DuHoux of Kandiyohi, Josephine “Joey” Werder of Willmar, Marian Tapper of Aurora, CO, Mae Rose Wesola of Minneapolis, and many nieces and nephews.

Elvin Aasness age 91 of Spicer, died Sunday morning, January 6, 2008 at his daughters home in Albert Lea. Funeral services will be 11:00 a.m. Monday, January 14, 2008 at the Evangelical Covenant Church in New London where visitation will be held 2 hours prior to the service. Burial will be 11:00 a.m. Tuesday, January 15, 2008 at Stiklestad Cemetery near Doran, MN. Arrangements are with the Johnson Funeral Home in New London.
Elvin Irie Aasness was born at his family's farm home in Bradford Township near Doran, MN to Eline (Skrove) and Ole Aasness on July 24, 1916. He was the youngest of eleven children. Elvin was born into a family of Norwegian immigrants from the Trondelag area of central Norway. He was baptized and confirmed at Stiklestad Lutheran Church in rural Doran. He attended a country school for elementary school for his education and graduated from Campbell High School in 1935. After high school he farmed and then decided to pursue a different venture – he went into business with his brother Ted and built homes in Portland, Oregon and several in Fergus Falls including his own. Elvin was united in marriage on June 29th 1948 to Alice Laura Hegstad in Powers Lake, ND. To this union two daughters were born. The family resided in Fergus Falls from 1948 to 1959. In the summer of 1959 they moved to a farm near Doran, where Elvin farmed for several years. In 1985 they moved back to Fergus Falls. His beloved wife Alice became ill with cancer and died in 1993.
On Dec. 10, 1994, Elvin was united in marriage to Alvina Lindquist. They made their home in Spicer and enjoyed retirement together.
Elvin enjoyed woodworking and made many wood crafts for gifts and craft sales. He was a very devoted and loving husband and father. First and foremost was his love of God and devotion to living a Christ-centered life.
Elvin died Sunday morning January 6, 2008 at the home of daughter Marie at the age of 91 after a long illness. He is survived by wife, Alvina Aasness of Spicer; daughters Marie Aasness Davis of Albert Lea, and Karen (Larry) Lindquist of Spicer; grandchildren, Elena (Jeff) Pohl of Wilmington, NC, Joel Davis of Albert Lea, Laura Davis of Seattle, WA, Sara Lindquist of Littleton, CO, Amy Lindquist of Minneapolis, Kevin Lindquist of St. Cloud, Anna Lindquist of Spicer; and great-granddaughter, Jade Lindquist of Littleton, CO; Alvina’s children, Dennis (Marlys) Lindquist of New London, Carolyn (Larry) Poe of Atwater and Rosemary (Gary) Wallace of Coon Rapids and several nieces and nephews. Harold Natvig, 76 of Pennock, died on Friday at Rice Memorial Hospital Funeral services will be 2:00 pm Wednesday at Mamrelund Lutheran Church in Pennock. Friends may call on Tuesday from 5- 7pm at Harvey Anderson Funeral Home and on Wednesday 1hour prior to services at the church.
Harold was born on January 4, 1932, in Brooklyn, New York, the son of Harald B. and Inger L (Lund) Natvig. He grew up in Brooklyn attending public Schools of New York City for his elementary schooling and graduating from Ft. Hamilton High School in 1949. He continued is education at Concordia College, Moorhead, MN graduating in 1960 and later attended New York University of Business Administration.
Harold served in the US Air Force during the Korean Conflict.
On February 21, 1958, Harold was united in marriage to Yvonne A. Manley at Mamrelund Lutheran Church in Pennock. This union was blessed with three children. Harold was employed at Irving Trust Company and later National Bank of South Dakota, First Bank Fargo, Drover First American Bank South St. Paul, MN. They lived in many communities including Moorhead, MN, Staten Island, NY, and Sioux Falls. SD, Fargo, ND, South St. Paul, MN and moved to Pennock in 2000.
He was baptized at Norwegian Seamens Church, Brooklyn, NY and confirmed at Our Saviour’s Lutheran Church, Brooklyn, NY. Where he was active in Luther League. He was a former member of Our Saviour’s Lutheran, Stataten Island, where he served on the church council and was a Deacon from 1962-70. While living in Sioux Falls they were members of Our Saviour's Lutheran where he served on the church council and was a deacon form 1972-1978. He was a member of Mamrelund Lutheran in Pennock at the time of his death. He was currently serving on the church council and council president.
Harold was active with the Pennock Lions Club, served on the Community Center Board, a member of and a Golden member of the Sons of Norway Fedraheimen Lodge, Willmar. Past Treasure of Solørlag of America, Norske Torske Klubben of St. Paul and Boy Scouts of America Order of the Arrow.
Surviving is his wife, Yvonne of Pennock; children, Viggo Nightbay (and Sonja Bloomquist) of Moorhead, Lisa Natvig of South St. Paul and Eric (and Kari) Natvig, Fargo, ND; two grandchildren, Ella and Ian Natvig.
He was preceded in death by his parents and brother, Ivar.

Dennis R. Sankey, 70 of Willmar, died unexpectedly at his home on Friday. Funeral services will be 11:00 am Wednesday at United Methodist Church in Willmar with interment a will be in Fairview Cemetery. Dennis Robert Sankey was born on May 19, 1937, in Lone Tree Township, Chippewa Co., MN the son of John and Joyce (Mann) Sankey. He attended Raymond Elementary School and graduated from Willmar High School in 1957.
On August 28, 1959, Dennis was united in marriage to Sharon Holland at Calvary Lutheran Church in Willmar. This union was blessed with four children. They made their home in Willmar, where Dennis worked for Chappel Central as a sheet metal installer and fabricator, retiring in May 1999, after 42 years of employment.
He served in the National Guard, from 1954-1997, and was a member of American Legion Post #167, Willmar.
He was confirmed at Watertown, South Dakota and was a member of United Methodist Church in Willmar at the time of his death. He served his church as an usher, trustee and delivered Meals on Wheels.
Dennis was a member of the Rocky Mt Elk Foundation, North American Hunting Club, and the Sons of Norway.
Surviving is his wife, Sharon; children, Cindi (and Randi) Twardy of Eden Valley, Lisa (and James) Doering of Olivia, Beth (and Jim) Young of Kimball and Michael (and Dawn) Sankey of Willmar; 11 grandchildren and two great grandchildren. Also surviving are his sisters, Diane Sletten of Willmar and Darla Toms of Brainerd

Janine Schwartz, age 39 of Willmar, died Friday, January 4, 2008 at Bethesda Heritage Care Center in Willmar, after an 18 month battle with cancer. Funeral services will be 11:00 a.m. Tuesday, January 8, 2008 at Salem Covenant Church in rural Pennock. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Visitation will be Monday from 5:00 to 8:00 p.m. at the Harvey Anderson Funeral Home in Willmar and for one hour prior to the services at the church.
Janine Fay Schwartz was born on August 14, 1968 in Appleton the daughter of Marlow and Ardis (Giese) Schwartz. She grew on the family farm near Appleton where she attended Appleton Elementary and High School, graduating in 1986. In her youth she was active in the First Baptist Church where she participated in the youth group and taught Sunday school. She also participated in 4-H and FFA. She moved to Willmar in 1987 and attended Willmar Vo Tech and later began her career as a teacher at Heartland Headstart, where she worked for 16 years. She moved to Murdock in 1999.
Janine attended Salem Covenant Church in rural Pennock. She enjoyed reading, attending all her nieces and nephew various activities and animals, especially cats. She had a true passion for children and teaching.
Janine died on Friday, January 4, 2008 at Bethesda Heritage Center in Willmar at the age of 39, after a 18 month battle with cancer. She is survived by son, Patrick Schwartz of Murdock; parents, Marlow and Ardis Schwartz of Appleton; brothers, Steven (Dianne) Schwartz of Parkers Prarie, Craig (Ann) Schwartz of LeMars, Iowa, Bradley (Missie) Schwartz of Rogers, Darrell (sp friend, Tanya) Schwartz of Cyrus and Martin (Julie) Schwartz of Pine Island; and numerous, aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, and other family and friends.

Edith J. Johnson, 95, of Willmar died Wednesday at Bethesda Pleasantview in Willmar. Funeral services will be 2:00 pm, Saturday at Salem Covenant Church in rural Pennock, with Pastor Mike McCaine officiating. Burial is in the church cemetery. Visitation will be one hour prior to services at the church on Saturday. Arrangements are with Harvey Anderson Funeral Home in Willmar.
Edith Josephine was born March 9, 1912, in Maxwell Twp., Lac Qui Parle Co., MN, the daughter of Walfred and Hannah (Swenson) Anderson. Edith received her elementary education in Dist. #25, Maxwell Twp., and graduated from Dawson High School in 1930. She attended normal training for two years in Montevideo, and continued her educational training at St. Cloud State University, where she received her two year degree. During her distinguished teaching career she taught in country schools, as well as Herman, Clarkfield and Columbia Heights, MN.
On May 3, 1947, Edith married Edwin Johnson at Dawson, MN. They were blessed with 56 years of marriage. They made their home in the Kerkhoven area, where Edith continued teaching at the Kerkhoven Elementary School and also served as the grade school principal for a number of years.
Edith was a member of Salem Covenant Church, where she was active in the Covenant Women’s Ministries, taught Sunday School and Vacation Bible School, and also served as the church librarian. Edith and Ed moved to Willmar in 1978, and they enjoyed their retirement years by traveling to Texas in the winter. Edith found many ways to continue her involvement with the community. She volunteered at Rice Memorial Hospital at the reception desk, served with the Blue Ladies at the nursing home, and offered her skills and abilities to help the Youth for Christ organization.
Edith was a loving person and gave of her time to many who had needs. In her quiet servitude she reflected the love that she received from her Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. She will be greatly missed by family and friends.
Surviving are her sister, Wilma Johnson of Rochester; brother, Wendell (and Helen) Anderson of Dawson; and many nieces, nephews and other relatives.
She was preceded in death by her parents, one brother, one nephew, and her husband Ed on September 28, 2003.

Alton E. Erickson 88, of Willmar and formerly of Kandiyohi, died on Thursday at Rice Memorial Hospital. Funeral services will be 1:00 pm Monday at Tripolis Lutheran Church rural Kandiyohi with interment in the church cemetery. Friends may call on Sunday from 3 until 6 pm at Harvey Anderson Funeral Home and on Monday 1 hour prior to services at the church.
Alton Ellsworth Erickson was born on September 21, 1919, in Willmar, the son of Carl Edward and Amanda Caroline (Naid) Erickson. He grew up in rural Willmar attending Dist # 39 in Fahlun Township for his schooling.
On March 22, 1941, Alton was united in marriage to Florence Swenson at Tripolis Lutheran Church Parsonage. This union was blessed with two children. They farmed in Fahlun Township until the early 1970’s when Alton began working as a carpenter. He built several homes in the area and helped with the remolding of Tripolis Church. He also did woodworking, making furniture, and shelving and sold them as local craft sales. Alton and Florence also were the custodians at Tripolis Lutheran and at the Bank of Willmar for a number of years.
He was baptized, confirmed and was a lifetime member of Tripolis Lutheran Church. He had served on the church council and was church treasure. He was active on the cemetery board where he was chairman and Alton was active with the churchmen.
He had served on the Kandiyohi Creamery Board and was an adult leader for the Fahlun Go Getters 4-H club.
Alton’s family recalls his willingness to help, working on both Dale and Cathy’s homes. He volunteered with Habitat for Humanity for a number of years. His hobbies included gardening and fishing. They celebrated the 50th Wedding anniversary with family and friends. Alton always looked forward to the annual Erickson family reunion. Alton and Florence were always working side by side. They enjoyed traveling, taking trips to Sweden, Norway, Denmark, California, Florida and Branson.
On Thursday, January 3, 2008, Alton died at Rice Memorial Hospital at the age of 88 years. Surviving is his loving wife of 66 years, Florence; children Dale (and Karen) Erickson, Lakeville, Cathy (and Robert) Schueler, Willmar; three grandchildren, Chad (and Mollie) Erickson, Amanda Schueler and Ryan Schueler; two great grandchildren, Sydni and Garrett Erickson. Also surviving is his sister, Marie (and Arnold) Croonquist of Kandiyohi and several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, four brothers and four sisters.

Irwin “Irvin” R. Anderson, 92, of Pennock died Monday at Infinia at Willmar. Funeral services will be 10:30 am Saturday at First Reformed Church in Willmar. Visitation will be from 5-7 pm, Friday at Harvey Anderson Funeral Home and on Saturday one hour prior to services at the church. Burial is in Hillside Cemetery in Kerkhoven. Irvin Randolph was born April 9, 1915, in Hayes Twp., Swift Co., MN, the son of Albert and Tomina (Vestgaard) Anderson. He grew up in Hayes Twp., and attended District #29 through the 8th grade. He later worked for area farmers. On December 2, 1939, Irvin was united in marriage to Genevieve Myhre in Willmar. Following their marriage they lived in Bend, Oregon where he worked for Brooks Scandlin until 1942, when they moved to Minneapolis. In 1944, Irvin was drafted into the US Navy, serving during WWII and was honorably discharged in 1946. After his discharge, they moved to the Kerkhoven area where he worked as a blacksmith and farmed his homestead. Irvin retired from farming in 1976, and they moved to Pennock. For the next 18 years, they spent three months every year in Arizona.
He was baptized and confirmed at Kerkhoven Lutheran Church and was a member of First Reformed Church in Willmar.
Surviving is his loving wife of 68 years, Genevieve; children, Randolph (and Susan) Anderson of Bloomington; Owen (and Marlys) Anderson of Pennock, Allen (and Audrey) Anderson of Savage and JoAnn (and Larry) Benson of Belle Plain; nine grandchildren and 10 great grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents and his siblings, Allen Anderson, Josephine Peterson, Cornell Anderson, Harold Anderson, Luella Peterson, Olga Peterson and Vernon Anderson.

Robert W. “Bob” Strootman, age 71, of rural Spicer, died on Tuesday, January 1, 2008, at his home. Funeral services will be 2:00 p.m. Saturday January 5, 2008 at Peace Lutheran Church in New London. Visitation will be Friday from 5:00 to 8:00 p.m. at the Johnson Funeral Home in New London where there will be a 7:30 prayer service. Visitation will continue on Saturday for one hour prior to the services at the church. Memorials may be given to the New London Isaac Walton league (youth gun safety training program) or Peace Lutheran Church.
Robert William “Bob” Strootman was born November 3, 1936 in rural Raymond, Minnesota to William and Julia (Burns) Strootman. He was baptized at the Methodist Church in Raymond and confirmed at the Methodist Church in Belgrade. Bob spent the 1st 8 years of his life romping and exploring the prairies and shores surrounding Lake Olson in rural Raymond with his dog “Laddie”. He left the farm in 1944 when his parents bought Indian Beach Resort on Green Lake. There, he spent the next 9 years living what many would consider a “boys idyllic life”, hunting, fishing, trapping, swimming, and boating, with new kids arriving each weekend to enjoy the Lake, and the resorts legendary water slide. Early in his junior year at Atwater High School, they sold the resort and returned to a farm outside Belgrade, where he graduated in 1954.
In September following his graduation he was united in marriage to Joyce Quisberg at Lebanon Lutheran Church in New London. The following six years seeing the birth of their three children: Brad in 1955, Julie in 1958 and Gary in 1960, with the family home in Irving township for the last 41 years. Also during that time the family enjoyed a second home in the woods and lakes north of Deer River in Itasca County.
Bob’s life revolved around his family and his love of the outdoors. He had a unique ability to weave his two passions together, without any of us being aware of his orchestration.
Bob’s early adult years were spent in a multitude of different jobs culminating in his 40 plus years of management at Trinity Industries in New London. During that time he also served as the General Manager of Trinity manufacturing facilities in Lincoln, Nebraska, and Beardstown, Illinois. He also briefly owned and operated Willmar Chemical Company, and was an astute investor.
His family was long time members of Lebanon/Peace Lutheran Church of New London. Bob was a member of the Isaac Walton League, serving as a youth gun safety instructor for over 30 years, and was recognized for his service by the Minnesota DNR in 2004 for being the second longest tenured instructor in the program’s history. He was a member of the New London Hunting Club, the New London Country Club, Ducks Unlimited, Rocky Mountain Elk Foundation, and Minnesota Waterfowlers.
Bob died Tuesday, January 1, 2008, at 1:39 p.m. at his home in rural Spicer, surrounded by his entire family, following a year-long battle with pancreatic cancer. Bob is survived by his wife, Joyce, his children Brad (Joyce) Strootman of Marshall, Julie (Todd) Davis of Willmar and Gary Strootman of Minneapolis; four grandsons: Julie’s sons, Nick and Chase Davis of Willmar, Gary’s son, Zane Hazen of Minneapolis, and Brad’s son,Aaron Strootman of Marshall. He is also survived by his sisters Dorothy Gunter of Willmar, and Shirley Kamstra of Beardsley, MN. He is preceded in death by his parents, Father and Mother-law Clarence and Mildred Quisberg, his brother Wilbur and sister-in-law Gert, brother-in-laws Clarence “Shorty” Gunter and Dave Hegstrom, and by his God-child Shannon Fuerst.

Edward D. Orsten, age 70 of Belgrade, died Saturday December 29, 2007 at Glacial Ridge Hospital in Glenwood. A private family memorial service will be held at a later date. Arrangements are with the Johnson Funeral Home in Belgrade.
Edward Duane Orsten was born on March 13, 1937 in Wanamingo, the son on Alvan and Edna (Nelson) Orsten. He grew up in Willmar where he attended Willmar High School. On Dec. 13, 1952 he entered the United States Air Force, where he served his country during the Korean Conflict and the Vietnam War. He was stationed in Germany where he met his wife, Johanna Stoehr. They were united in marriage on August 1, 1959 in Germany. To this union a son and daughter were born. Edward was discharged in the fall of 1968 and returned to Minnesota, making their home in South St. Paul, where he worked for Sperry Rant Univac for 11 years. They moved to a farm South East of Belgrade in 1979, where they farmed and he worked for SCI Technologies for 15 years. After his retirement he worked for Cashwise in Willmar as a stock clerk for 5 years until his health declined. Together, Edward and Johanna were able to share in 48 years of marriage.
Edward is survived by his wife Johanna; son Jeff (Melissa) Orsten of Atwater; daughter, JoAnn (Steve) Leaf of Dassel and granddaughter, Anna Orsten.

Marilyn Ann Kluver, age 84 of Willmar died on Friday, December 28, 2007 at Rice Memorial Hospital in Willmar. Marilyn Ann Kluver was born on October 30, 1923 in Sioux Center, Iowa, the daughter of Bert and Hermina (Kempers) Mouw. She grew up in rural Orange City, Iowa and attended country school. She moved with her family to Montevideo in 1952. The family later moved to a farm in rural Willmar.
Marilyn was united in marriage to William Kluver on August 12, 1960 at the Christian Reformed Church in Clara City. The couple Farmed N.E. of Clara City and in 1969 moved to Willmar. Marilyn worked part time at Gurley’s Cookie Company in Willmar and was a clerk at Havick’s Clothing Store in Willmar. William died on October 6, 1980. Marilyn began working as a Human Service Technician at the Willmar Regional Treatment Center where she worked for 15 years retiring on January 10, 1992. She continued to live at her home in Willmar and in 2002 she became a resident of Rice Care Center in Willmar.
Marilyn was baptized in Sioux Center, IA and confirmed her faith in 1938 at Middleburg Reformed Church. She was a member of Clara City Reformed Church where she taught Sunday School. She was a member of First Reformed Church in Willmar where she also taught Sunday School and active with the Ladies Circle.
Marilyn was a devoted wife and mother. She enjoyed spending time with her family and friends. She especially enjoyed spending time with her grandchildren.
Marilyn is survived by her sons: Keith (and Susan) Kluver of Sauk Center, John (and Lucinda) Kluver of Sunburg, Lynn (and Barbara) Kluver of Pennock; step-sons: James (and JoHanna) Kluver of Raymond, and Bruce (and Donna) Kluver of Wisconsin Rapids, Wisconsin; 17 grandchildren; sisters Shirley DeHoogh of Council Bluffs, IA, and Charlotte (and Bernard) Rens of New London.
In addition to her husband, Marilyn was preceded in death by her parents and brother Robert.

Judy Stanley, 59, of Paynesville, died Thursday, December 27, 2007 at her home. Funeral services are 10:30 a.m. Monday at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Eden Valley. Burial will be held at Paynesville Cemetery. A visitation will be held from 4-8:00 p.m. Sunday at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Eden Valley and continue one hour prior to the service on Monday. Funeral services are entrusted to Johnson Funeral Home in Paynesville.
Judy Wegman was born August 14, 1948, in Watertown, South Dakota, the daughter of Herb and Janice (Protexter) Wegman. Judy grew up in Raymond, SD, where she attended elementary school and graduated from high school in 1966. After high school she attended South Dakota State University and later graduated from Iowa State University in 1970, with a Bachelor of Arts Degree in English.
On August 23, 1969, Judy was united in marriage to Allen (Bert) Stanley at Peace Lutheran Church in Clark, SD. This union was blessed with one son, Chris. Judy and Bert lived in Boone, Iowa; Decatur, Georgia, and Redfield, South Dakota from 1969 to 1975, before moving to Paynesville in 1975. After moving to Paynesville, Bert and Judy purchased and operated Corner Drug. Where she continued to operate the store with Bert until her illness became too great.
Judy was baptized and confirmed into the Christian faith at Bethlehem Lutheran Church in Raymond, SD and was a member of St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Eden Valley at the time of her death. She served her church as a member of the finance committee for four years.
Judy was very community orientated, actively participating as a Paynesville Lioness, the Jaycee Women, Chamber of Commerce, and a past president of the Bulldog Booster Club. Judy loved the outdoors and enjoyed watching the local baseball teams, she was also a very proud hockey mom and grandmother.
Judy died on December 27, 2007, at her home on Lake Koronis in rural Paynesville. Surviving is her husband, Allen (Bert) Stanley, son and daughter-in-law Chris and Missy Stanley; grandchildren Tanner and Emma all of Paynesville. Also surviving her are her parents, Herb and Janice Wegman of Raymond, SD; siblings, Margaret Jean (and David) Doyen of Watertown, SD, Robert (and Barb) Wegman of Raymond, SD, Mary Jane (and Elwin) Larson of Omaha, NE, Janet (and Terry) Frost of Afton, OK; several nieces and nephews.

Avis I. Lewis, 89, of Willmar, died Tuesday, December 25, 2007 at Bethesda Pleasantview in Willmar. Funeral service will be 11:00 am, Saturday, December 29, 2007 at Kerkhoven Presbyterian Church in Kerkhoven. Burial will be in Hillside Cemetery in Kerkhoven. Visitation will be from 5-8 pm, Friday at Harvey Anderson Funeral Home in Willmar and continue one hour prior to service at the church on Saturday.
Avis was born on October 23, 1918, in Mitchell, Iowa, the daughter of William and Laura (Duenow) Schmidt. She attended elementary school in Mitchell and graduated in 1936 from Mitchell High School. She continued her education at Hamilton Business College in Mason City, graduating in 1938. She remained in Mason City until 1941 when she moved to Washington D.C., where she worked as a secretary in the Pentagon. Avis returned to Mitchell in 1950 and on February 20, 1953, she was untied in marriage to Henry Lewis in Osage, Iowa. Following their marriage, they moved to a farm near Murdock. Henry died on July 9, 1960. She remained on the farm until 2000 when she moved into Willmar. She had been active with the Chippewa County Farm Bureau, PTA and the Chippewa County Republican Party.
She was baptized and confirmed at Faith Lutheran Church in Mitchell and was a member of Kerkhoven Presbyterian Church where she had been Sunday School Superintendant and also served on the Board of Trustees.
Surviving are her children, Craig Lewis of Murdock; Laurine (and Steve Nowrang) Lewis of Rockford, MN and Valerie (and Randy) Holmgren of Kerkhoven.
Besides her husband, her parents preceded her in death.

Clarence Teichert, age 74 of Willmar died on Tuesday, December 25, 2007 at Rice Memorial Hospital in Willmar. Funeral service will be 10:30 am on Saturday at Vinje Lutheran Church in Willmar. Burial will be at Cloverleaf Cemetery in Willmar. Visitation will be from 5-8pm on Friday at Harvey Anderson Funeral Home in Willmar and will continue one hour prior to the services at the church on Saturday.
Clarence Fredrick Teichert was born on December 23, 1933, in Clara City, Minnesota, the son of Fred and Gertie (Berens) Teichert. He grew up in the Clara City area and graduated from Clara City High School. Clarence was united in marriage to Charlotte Roelofs on November 24, 1952, in Raymond. The couple lived in Clara City and Raymond where Clarence worked as a milkman for a few years. He later began working for Farmers Union Coop, in Willmar. They moved to Willmar in 1959. Clarence retired from Cenex in 1999. Charlotte died on November 9, 2000, after a long illness. Following her death, Clarence continued to live at his home in Willmar with the support of his friends and family.
Clarence was baptized and confirmed at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Clara City. He was member of Vinje Lutheran Church in Willmar.
Clarence enjoyed driving around the country side looking at scenery, he would often volunteer to drive family and friends around to different places. His family remembers the many camping they would go on in the summer months. Clarence liked to watch westerns and wrestling on TV. He especially enjoyed spending time with his grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
He is survived by his children: Kathy (and Jim) Brekke of Brooklyn Park, Pam Teichert of Willmar, Galen (and Donna) of Pelican Rapids, Susan (and Darrell) Justi of Spicer, and Luann (and Ron) Hale of Alexandria; eight grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; sister Anna Ulferts of Clara City; mother-in-law, Lillian Roelofs of Raymond; and nieces, nephews and other relatives.
In addition to his wife, Clarence was preceded in death by his parents and brother Marvin.

R. Wayne Peterson, age 81 of Spicer formerly of Ruthton, died December 25, 2007 at Rice Memorial Hospital in Willmar. Funeral services will be 2:00 pm Saturday, at Peace Lutheran Church in New London. Burial will be at Lebanon Cemetery in New London. Military honors will be provided by the Spicer American Legion Post #545. A visitation will be held on Friday from 5-8:00 pm at the Johnson Funeral Home in New London, and continue one hour prior to the service at the church.
Richard “Wayne” Peterson was born on June 2, 1926, in Slayton Minnesota, the son of Edwin and Eathel (McLain) Peterson. He grew up on the family farm with his three brothers and two sisters. Wayne attended Brookside Country School, and Slayton High School. After high school he entered the United States Navy where he served his country as a Navy Corpman until his honorable discharge in 1944.
On February 11, 1949 Wayne was united in marriage to Bernetta (Bert) Holck. To this union two sons and one daughter were born. The family lived in Ruthton where Wayne worked as a custodian and bus driver for the Ruthton Public Schools. In 1968 he began working at the Minnesota Department of transportation as an office manager. In 1977 Wayne and Bert moved to Spicer where he continued to work until his retirement on August 17, 1988. Together they shared in 58 years of marriage before Bert passed away on May 16, 2007.
Wayne was a member of Peace Lutheran Church in New London. He also was a life member of the Spicer American Legion Post # 545. He enjoyed living at Skyline where he was very proud of his gardens, and collections of stamps, coins, cookie jars, and fishing tackle. Wayne enjoyed going to auctions, and going fishing. He also was a big sports fan, volunteering as the manager of the Ruthton baseball team and also umpiring. Most of all Wayne was proud of his grandchildren and great grandchildren, speaking of them often.
Richard “Wayne” Peterson died on December 25, 2007 at Rice Memorial Hospital in Willmar at the age of 81. He is survived by his children, Stu of Ruthton, Don of Spicer, Jule (and Rick) Reese of Woodstock; grandchildren Sara, (and Chad) Karbo of Balaton, Brendon (and Tanya) Reese of Cedar Grove, NJ, Amanda (and Mike) Felt of Spicer, Erica (and Paul) Varcoe of Sioux Falls, SD, Lynsey Reese of Woodstock; great grandchildren, Hannah Jensen, Alexander Reese, and Noah Varcoe. He is also survived by his sister, Jean Gilbertson of Maple Grove, and brother, Dale Peterson of Ruthton.
Wayne was preceded in death by his wife, Bert; parents, Edwin and Eathel; brothers, Harold and Arvid; and sister, Joyce.

Wendy Feuerhake, age 45 of Belgrade, died unexpectedly December 23, 2007 at her home in Belgrade. Wendellyn Mae Feuerhake was born on April 22, 1962 in Kansas, City, Missouri, the daughter of Donald and Donna (Smith) Sogge. She grew up in Kansas City, Dallas, Chicago and Virginia. She attended Lafayette High School graduating in 1980 and continued her education at Radford University in Radford, Virginia. She moved to Pennsylvania were she began her career working with the developmentally disabled. She moved to Willmar in 1994 where she worked for Diversified Lifestyles as a house manager. On June 18, 2005, Wendy was united in marriage to Joe Feuerhake at Trinity Lutheran Church of Grove Lake. They made their home in Belgrade and were able to share in over 2 years of marriage.
Wendy was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church of Grove Lake. She enjoyed her work, painting windows, sewing, and taking care of their dog, Buckwheat.
Wendy died unexpectedly December 23, 2007 at her home in Belgrade at the age of 45. She is survived by husband, Joe; parents, Don and Donna Sogge of Ham Lake; brother, Chris and wife Liz Sogge of Baltimore, MD; father-in-law, Dennis Feuerhake of Brooten; sister-in-law, Debbie and husband Mark Vallevand of Lino Lakes; and two nieces and two nephews.

Lilah L. Herzberg, age 87 of Paynesville, died Saturday morning, December 22, 2007 at the Paynesville Area Hospital. Funeral Services will be 11:00 a.m. Thursday, December 27th, 2007 at Grace United Methodist Church in Paynesville. Burial will be in the Paynesville Cemetery. Lilah Lillian Herzberg was born on Aug. 29, 1920 in Paynesville, the daughter of William and Anna (Wendlandt) Kruger. She was a graduate of Paynesville High School and St. Cloud University. On February 16, 1941 she was united in marriage to Harold Herzberg at the First Evangelical Church in St. Cloud. They shared 48 happy years of marriage together and to this union two sons and a daughter were born. They made their home in the Paynesville area where Lilah worked for NW Bell Telephone Company and in the business office at the Paynesville Area Hospital where she retired after 20 years of service.
Lilah was a member of Grace United Methodist Church where she was active in many areas of the church, including Sunday School, administrative board, finance board, Women’s Missionary Society, bible study and the Naomi Circle. She especially enjoyed spending time with her family, having meals at their homes or going out to eat. She also enjoyed church music, her flower garden, bird watching and entertaining her family and friends through the years.
Lilah Lillian Herzberg died on Saturday morning, December 22, 2007 at the age of 87 at the Paynesville Area Hospital. She is survived by two sons, Stanley (Marsha) Herzberg and Gary (Marilyn) Herzberg both of Paynesville; four grandchildren, Dean (Heidi) Herzberg of Madison, David Herzberg, Stephanie (Erik) Burr, and Kelly Herzberg all of Paynesville; and three great-grandchildren.
Lilah was preceded in death by husband, Harold; daughter, Sandra and two sisters, Esther and Sadie.

Arnold J. Liestman, age 80 of Paynesville, formerly of New London, died Friday morning, December 21, 2007 at his home in Paynesville.
Funeral services will be 10:30 a.m. Thursday, December 27, 2007 at Crow River Lutheran Church in rural Belgrade. Burial will be in Lebanon Cemetery in New London.
Visitation will be Wednesday from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. at the Johnson Funeral Home in New London and for one hour prior to the services at the church.
Arnold John Liestman was born on Feb. 8, 1927 in Paynesville, the son of Ben and Hattie (Zirbes) Liestman. He was baptized Jan. 25, 1928 at the Evangelical United Brethen Church in Paynesville and confirmed at Crow River Lutheran Church on March 25, 1953. He grew up in Paynesville were he attended school. On Feb. 9, 1944, Arnie entered the United States Navy where he served his country during WWII in the South Pacific. He was honorably discharged on May 8, 1946 and returned home. On Sept. 26, 1946 Arnie was united in marriage to Theresa Lang in Rosco. To this union three daughters were born. They moved to New London in 1952 where Arnie owned and operated the Hometown Bakery. Together, Arnie and Theresa were able to share in 26 years of marriage before Theresa’s death on July 24, 1973. In October of 1974, Arnie was united in marriage to Doris Johnson.
Later in his career he owned and operated the Town Talk Restaurant and Bakery in Willmar as well as working as a baker for SuperValue, Red Owl and the Willmar Regional Treatment Center, where he retired in 1995. In his retirement he worked for his niece, at Jody’s Hometown Bakery in Paynesville. On Nov. 5, 1994, Arnie was united in marriage to Virginia McKean. They made their home in Paynesville where they enjoyed retirement together. Together they were able to share in 13 years of marriage.
Arnie was a member of Crow River Lutheran Church, New London Senior Center, New London American Legion and volunteered at the R.O.S.E. Center in Paynesville. He enjoyed motor coach day trips, helping at the R.O.S.E Center, playing cards with family and friends and the special bond he shared with his twin brother, Art. His passions in life were baking and cooking for others, gardening and supplying friends and family with produce and flowers, fishing local lakes and having fish fries for his many friends and family. His family will carry his smile and patience in their memories forever.
Arnie died on Friday, December 21, 2007 at his home in Paynesville at the age of 80. He is survived by wife, Virginia; daughters, Jackie Nelson of Owatonna and Joy (Jim) Allen of Mesa, AZ; seven grandchildren; eleven great-grandchildren; siblings, Evange (Ervin) Gunderson of Eureka,CA, twin brother, Art (Pat) Liestman of Paynesville, Donna Warner of Paynesville, Lila Westman of Crosby, Joan (George) Wicklund of Spicer and David (Bonnie) Liestman of Eureka, MT and numerous nieces and nephews.
Arnie was preceded in death by his first wife, Theresa; daughter, Jeannie Marie; parents; brother, Bernie; sister and brother-in-law, Virginia (Duane) Cossairt and brother-in-law, Jerry Warner.

June Torkelson was born on June 30th, 1934 on the family farm in rural Brooten, Daughter of Carl & Ruby (Oltuff) Hjelmeland. She grew up with her siblings, Beatrice, Betty, Marlas, and Tom. She continued to live in the Brooten area her entire life, until August of 2006 when she moved to Lakeview Gardens in rural Kimball. She was married in 1957 for several years and had 2 children, Doris & Michael. June enjoyed spending time with her family and many years of daily coffee with friends.
June is survived by her 2 children; Doris (Jim)Fiecke, of Cold Spring, and Michael Torkelson of Willmar. 2 siblings; Marlas (Bruce) Nihart of Richfield, and Tom (Deb) Hjelmeland on Golden Valley. 2 grandchildren; Kristy Michels of St. Cloud and Aaron Michels of Spicer and 8 nieces & nephews.
June was preceded in death by her parents Carl & Ruby Hjelmeland, 2 sisters; Beatrice Carter & Betty Hjelmeland.

Gerald H. Nichtern, 82, of Willmar, died Tuesday, December 18, 2007 at Bethesda Pleasantview in Willmar. A service will be 10:00 am, Saturday, December 22, 2007 at Harvey Anderson Funeral Home in Willmar. Burial will be at 3:30 pm, at Woodville Cemetery in Waseca. Visitation will be from 6-8 pm, Friday at the funeral home and continue one hour prior to services at the funeral home.
Gerald was born on December 16, 1925, in Emmetsburg, Iowa, the son of Horace and Florence (Sorenson) Nichtern. They moved to a farm by St. James when he was a year old and he went to school in Grogan through the 6th grade. He then attended a country school. On April 18, 1948, he was united in marriage to Dorothy Dietrich at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Waseca. They moved to Torrington, Wyoming and he was a painter. They returned to Minnesota and he painted with his father-in-law, Albert Diedtrich for a year. He then began working for EF Johnson Company, retiring in 1990 after 37 years. Gerald and Dorothy lived on a farm southwest of Waseca where he also farmed. They also enjoyed spending 17 years at their cottage in Canada on Lake of the Woods. Dorothy died on January 1, 1996.
Gerald was united in marriage to Patricia (Lundin) Gustafson on March 1, 1997 at Raymond United Methodist Church and they lived in Willmar.
He belonged to Civil Defense for a number of years in Waseca and helped at the Sheriffs Department.
Surviving are his wife, Pat of Willmar; children, Bonnie (and Wilson) of Keizer, Oregon; David (and Gloria) Nichtern of Starbuck; Becky (and Gary) Anderson of Waseca; step children, Greg (and Deanna) Gustafson of Willmar; Judy (and Craig) Hanson of Willmar; three grandchildren, Chris (and Connie) Nichtern, Kelly (and Eric) Heyer, Kyle (and Katie) Nichtern; four step grandchildren, Adam (and Samantha) Gustafson, Tracy (and Jeff) Conklin, Heather and Brett Gustafson; six great grandchildren, Connor, Kylie, Aubrie, Elijah, Jonah, James and two step great grandchildren, Brennen and Bryler and also is his sister, Donna (and Gene) DeFoe.
Besides his first wife, Dorothy, Gerald was preceded in death by his parents, son, Timothy and sister, Dolores Jensen.

Leonard Peter Schmitz, 80, of Brooten, died Sunday, December 16, 2007 at Belgrade Nursing Home. Mass of Christian Burial will be 11:00 am, Thursday, December 20, 2007 at St. Donatus Catholic Church in Brooten. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Visitation will be from 4-8 pm, Wednesday with a rosary prayed at 4:00 pm and a parish prayer service at 7:30 pm at Johnson Funeral Home in Belgrade. Visitation will continue one hour prior to services at the church on Thursday.
Leonard was born on December 17, 1926, in St. Martin, Minnesota, the son of George and Matilda (Hemmesh) Schmitz. He was raised on the farm and attended country school. In 1950, he moved to Brooten. Leonard served in the United States Army, during the Korean Conflict and was honorably discharged in October of 1954. He received the following medals: Korean Service Medal with Bronze Stars, Good Conduct Medal, United Nations Service Medal and the National Defense Service Medal.
On July 2, 1957, he was united in marriage to Dorothy Oevermann at St. Boniface Catholic Church in Melrose. Along with his brother, Martin, Leonard and Dorothy moved to North Fork Township and they started, Schmitz Farms. They farmed from July 1957 until 1994 when Leonard and Dorothy moved into Brooten. In June of 2004, he became a resident of Belgrade Nursing Home. Leonard was a member of VFW Post #1825 n Belgrade.
He was baptized on December 18, 1926 at St. Martin’s Catholic Church and was a member of St. Donatus Catholic Church where he was an usher.
He loved to dance, spend time in the woods with the chainsaw and visit with his many friends and family members. Leonard often would stop by his children’s homes just to see what the kids and grandkids were doing. He was a farmer at heart, attending farm auctions and talked about farming until his last day. He would be so happy to know you are all here today in his honor. We know, he is watching us now with a big smile on his face.
Surviving are his wife, Dorothy; children, Philip Schmitz of Paynesville; Mary Jane Schmitz of Brooten; Alice (and Larry) Schumann of Brooten; Dennis (and Sandy) Schmitz of Brooten; Gerald (and Susan) Schmitz of Brooten; Lois Schmitz of Willmar; Brenda Schmitz of Brooten; 12 grandchildren and siblings, Catherine (and Alphonse) Mehr of Richmond, MN; Herb (and Florence) Schmitz of St. Paul; Henry (and Becky) Schmitz of Hawick; Martin (and Esther) Schmitz of Brooten; Math (and Irene) Schmitz of Belgrade; Herman (and Bernie) Schmitz of Cold Spring; Frances (and John) Remer of Brooten; Nick Schmitz of Richfield and Robert (and Judy) Schmitz of St. Martin.

Delicia Trevino 61, of Willmar died on Saturday at her home following an illness. Private family services were held. Arrangements are with Harvey Anderson Funeral Home.
Delicia was born on December 3, 1946, at Corpus Christi, Texas, the daughter of Bernardo and Ruth (Gomez) Trevino. She grew up in Corpus Christi where she attended her schooling.
In 1963, Delicia was united in marriage to Cruz Flores; this union was blessed with four children. They lived in Dallas where she worked 20 years at Airborne Inc. in the electronics area in airplane assembly, retiring in 1990, when they moved to Willmar, Minnesota.
Surviving are children, Joe Flores, Alfred Flores, and Gilbert (and Virginia) Flores all of Willmar, nine grandchildren and one great grandchild. Also surviving is former husband, Cruz Flores, Willmar and brothers and sisters, David Trevino, Alamo, TX, Olga Pena, San Juan, TX, Stella (and Lupe) Salazar, Dallas, TX and Abel Trevino, Dallas, TX.
She was preceded in death by her parents, one brother, two sisters and her daughter Yvette Flores on December 6, 2005.

Ruth Buffington age 87 of New London died peacefully on Friday morning, December 14, 2007, at her son’s home in rural New London. A memorial service will be held at 11:00 am Monday, at Peace Lutheran Church in New London. Interment will be held at 4:00 pm on Monday at Salem Cemetery in rural Comfrey. All are invited to lunch following the interment at the Selma Township Hall. A gathering of friends and family will be held on Sunday from 3-6:00 pm at the Johnson Funeral Home in New London and continue one hour prior to the service at the church.
Ruth Marion (Albrecht) Buffington was born on March 5, 1920 at her family’s home in St. Paul, the daughter of Rudolph and Lena (Rueger) Albrecht. She was baptized on April 6, 1920 and confirmed into the Christian faith on May 6, 1934 at Zion Lutheran Church in St. Paul. She grew up in St. Paul and received her primary education at Adam School and went on to graduate high school from Central High School in St. Paul with the class of 1938.
On December 4, 1940 Ruth was united in marriage to Maurice Lloyd Buffington. To this union two girls and two boys were born. The family lived in the rural Comfrey area where they farmed. On January 13, 1963 Maurice died, together they shared in 22 years of marriage. In 1983 she moved to New London to be closer to her son, Bill and his family.
Ruth was a past member of Salem Lutheran Church in Comfrey, and a current member of Peace Lutheran Church in New London. At peace she was active in the Nazareth Circle, and would volunteer every month at Christian Service Day.
Ruth loved the Lord. He was the center of her existence and guided her throughout her life. She loved gardening, her bible, her children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren. But most of all she loved God.
Ruth M. Buffington died on Friday, December 14, 2007 at her son’s home in rural New London at the age of 87. She is survived by her children Robert (and Joyce) of Bloomington, Diana (and Richard) Capaul of LeSueur, William (and Debra) of New London; son-in-law Larry Donnay; 12 grandchildren, Troy Donnay, Michael, James, Adam, Luke, Denise, Megan, and Myra Buffington, David Weber, Ruth Steinborn, Shawna Tech, and Amber Capaul; 17 Great grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Maurice; daughter, Gail Donnay; parents, Rudolph and Lena Albrecht; 4 brothers; and 3 sisters.

Norine Orpha “Nicky” (Dirks) was born on April 2, 1924, at Jeffers, Minnesota the daughter of George and Hazel (Evans) Dirks. She grew up in the Jeffers and their family later moved to Svea. Nicky graduated from Willmar High School in 1942.
On September 25, 1943, she was united in marriage to John Butler at Svea Lutheran Church. This union was blessed with one son. Following their marriage they lived in Willmar, moving to Oregon later that year. While living in Oregon, John was inducted into the Army so Nicky moved back to the Willmar area to live. Following his discharge in 1945, they moved to Spicer where Nicky worked as an egg candler. They later managed the George House Lodge in Spicer. They moved the Eagle Lake area, moving to Pennock in 1959. Nicky worked at Montgomery Wards in Willmar until it closed. She then worked as a bookkeeper for her husband’s shop in Pennock.
She was a member of Mamrelund Lutheran at the time of her death where she had been active with church circle.
Her family recalls Nicky’s hobbies of fishing and camping. They took many fishing trips with their friends. She enjoyed raising flowers and crocheting. They were members of a card club in the Pennock area and she participated in league bowling for many years.
Surviving is her husband, John; son, Gerry (and Ruth Ann) Butler, New London; four grandchildren and 11 great grandchildren
She was preceded in death by her parents, two sisters and two brothers.

Frances Scott, 82, of Willmar, died Thursday, December 13, 2007, at Bethesda Pleasantview in Willmar. A service will be 11:00 am, Tuesday at Eagle Lake Lutheran Church, rural Willmar. Burial will be in Gethsemane Lutheran Cemetery in Upsala, Minnesota. Visitation will be one hour prior to services at the church on Tuesday. Arrangements are with Harvey Anderson Funeral Home in Willmar.
Frances was born on September 29, 1925, in Rolette, North Dakota, the daughter of Carl Olaf and Karen Malena “Molly” (Kittelson) Peterson. Her family moved to Minnesota and eventually returned to Rolette where she graduated from high school as valedictorian. During WW II, she worked and lived in San Francisco for a power company. When the war ended, she returned to Rolette.
On October 13, 1946, she was united in marriage to Elden Scott at Valle Lutheran Church in Rolette. They lived in Rolette and Frances stayed home and raised her children. She later worked as an aide for the hospital before retiring. Frances and Elden eventually moved to St. Cloud, Minnesota. In 1997 when Frances’ health started deteriorating, she moved to Willmar. She has been a resident of Bethesda Pleasantview since 2003.
She was baptized and confirmed in the Lutheran Faith and was a member of Valle Lutheran Church in Rolette. Frances’ was an avid reader and enjoyed a competitive game or cards.
Surviving are her children, Sharon (and Dellan) Pepple of Willmar; Devona Scott of Tyaskin, MD; Denise Scott of St. Paul; three grandchildren, Darin (and Maria) Pepple, Craig (and Susanne) Pepple and Leah Scott; five great grandchildren, Derek, Nicholas, Libbie and Wilson Pepple and McKenna Mann. Also surviving are her sisters, Donna Lane of Corona, CA; Sylvia (and Marvin) Domsten of Burlington, ND; and her friends who were like family, Gil (and Judy) Warriner, their son, Nathan and his daughter, Molly all of Willmar.
She was preceded in death by her parents, husband in 1993, son, DeWayne Scott, grandson, Bruce Scott and sister, Verna Gae Hartley-Brown.

Gordon Halverson, 84, of Belgrade died Wednesday at the Paynesville Area Hospital. Funeral services are 2:00 p.m. Saturday at Crow River Lutheran Church in rural Belgrade. Interment will be at Gausdal Lutheran Cemetery in rural Belgrade. A visitation will be held on Friday from 5-8:00 p.m. at the Johnson Funeral Home in Belgrade and continue one hour prior to the service at the church.
Gordon was born on June 28, 1923 to George and Mathilda Halvorson of Georgeville, MN. He attended Georgeville School through the eight grade. He married Anna C. Anderson on May 24, 1946. Gordon was an ardent farmer all his life in rural Belgrade. He was a member of Gausdal Lutheran and Crow River Lutheran Church. Gordon was active and served on the elevator, creamery and cemetery boards. He was also a member of the Belgrade and Willmar Senior Citizens.
Gordon died on Wednesday December 12, 2007 at the Paynesville Area Hospital a the age of 84.He is survived by his wife, Anna of 61 years; children, Doug (Judy) of Isle, Phyllis Framstad (Jim) of Annandale, Marilyn Erickson (Paul) of Circle Pines, Ron (Kay) of Belgrade, Dan (Sue) of Willmar, Stan (Rachel) of New London, Ralph (Melissa) of Lakeville, Paul (Carrie) of Belgrade; 27 grandchildren; and 9 great grandchildren. He is also survived by his sisters, Olga (Donald) Carlson of Belgrade, Janice Anderson of Cambridge, and Marlys (Silas) Olson of Grand Rapids.
Gordon was preceded in death by his parents; his brother, Howard; infant son, Kenneth; daughter-in-law, Deb Halvorson; and brother-in-laws Walter Anderson and Albert Rath.

Jerome Miller, 82, of New London, died Tuesday, December 11, 2007 at his home. Funeral service will be 11 am, Saturday, December 15th at Johnson Funeral Home in New London. Burial will be in Oak Hill Cemetery in New London with Military Honors by American Legion Post #537. Arrangements are with Johnson Funeral Home in New London.
Jerome was born on May 12, 1925 in Harrison Township, Kandiyohi County, Minnesota, the son of Julius and Clara (Anderson) Miller. A graduated of New London High School in 1943, serving in the United States Marines until his honorable discharge in February 1946. He participated in the Battle of Saipan in June of 1944.
He continued his education at the University of Minnesota and St. Cloud State College with majors in English and History. After construction jobs in Morocco and Greenland, he taught high school classes in Kerkhoven, Willmar, St. Paul and Los Angeles. In later years, he taught English as a Second Language in New London-Spicer. For many years, he was a sales representative and consultant for McGraw-Hill Book Company of New York with territories in the Midwest, Europe and Southern California.
He was best known in this area as an antique dealer, appraiser and owner of his own auction service. Jerome was also an avid writer having written three novels, When Love Was Spring, Freya’s Saga and The Last Great Viking. He also was currently working on, A Modest Legacy.
Surviving are his brother, Howard Miller of Farmington, MN; sister, Marion Dahlberg of New London and numerous nieces and nephews.
Jerome was preceded in death by his parents, brothers, Darwin and Richard and sister, Joanne Watzke.

June Bruntlett age 73, of Paynesville died on Monday, December 3, 2007 at Valley Baptist Medical Center in Harlingen, Texas. June (Hanson) Bruntlett was born on June 21, 1934, in Minneapolis, the daughter of Ben and Ivy (Mead) Hanson. She grew up in Minneapolis and graduated from Patrick Henry High School with the class of 1952. On June 21, 1952, she was united in marriage to Kenneth Bruntlett in Minneapolis. To this union a son and daughter were born. The family lived in Howard Lake before moving to the Paynesville area to farm. They stayed on the farm for nine years before moving to Crystal for three years. In 1967, the family moved to Kimball where they lived until 1984, when June and Ken moved back to the Paynesville area. After their retirement, June and Ken spent their winters in Raymondville, Texas. Ken passed away in 2004. June and Ken shared in 52 years of marriage.
June was a member of Nordland Lutheran Church in rural Paynesville where she was an active member of WELCA. June was also a member of Paynesville American Legion Post #271 Auxiliary.
June enjoyed many hobbies including sewing and bird watching. She also enjoyed watching the Twins and the Vikings. June always found time for her family and she loved spending time with her grandchildren.
June Bruntlett died on December 3, 2007 at Valley Baptist Medical Center in Harlingen, Texas at the age of 73. She is survived by her children, Brad Bruntlett of Paynesville; Debra (and Terry) Markwardt of Austin, TX; grandchildren, Jen and Amanda Bruntlett, Adam, Scott and Jason Markwardt and nieces and nephews. Kenneth L. Jensen age 96 of Willmar, formerly of Svea, died on Sunday, December 9, 2007 at Bethesda Heritage Center in Willmar. Funeral services will, be at 1:00 pm. on Friday, December 14, 2007 at the Svea Evangelical Lutheran Church in Svea. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Visitation will be from 5-7 p.m. on Thursday at Harvey Anderson Funeral Home in Willmar and will continue one hour prior to the service at the church on Friday.
Kenneth Leo Jensen was born on November 24, 1911, in rural Priam, Minnesota, the son of Christ and Carrie (Flothe) Jensen. He grew up in the Priam area where he attended District 80 country school. He worked on the family farm. On July 18, 1937, he was united in marriage to Ardis Johnson at the Svea Lutheran Church in Svea. The couple farmed in Whitefield township and in 1941 moved to Fahlun township where they continued to farm. In 1977 Kenneth retired from farming and they built a home in Svea where they lived for 20 years moving to Willmar in 1997. Ardis died on December 4, 2002. Kenneth continued to live in Willmar Sunrise Village.
He was baptized and confirmed in the Christian faith and was a member of Svea Evangelical Lutheran Church in Svea where he served on various committees and boards including: the 1958 remodeling project, cemetery board and was head usher for many years.
Kenneth was a member of the American Dairy Association and on the Minnesota Dairy Industry Committee, president of the Fahlun Town Board, president of the Willmar Senior Citizens Center, president of the West Central Mutual Insurance company, board member of the Svea Coop Store and chairman of the Svea Creamery Board.
His hobbies included fishing, woodworking, and he was an avid fan of the Minnesota Twins.
Kenneth died on Sunday, December 9, 2007, at Bethesda Heritage Center in Willmar at the age of 96 years. He is survived by his daughter Karen A Dresser of Spicer; son Paul (and Susan) Jensen of Prior Lake, Mn; three grandchildren, six great-grandchildren; brother Roy Jensen of Willmar, several nieces, nephews and other relatives.
In addition to his wife, Kenneth was preceded in death by his parents, three brothers Albert, Otto and Clarence; sister Vivian; and great-grandson Matthew.

Madeline F. Loch, age 87 of Belgrade, died Sunday afternoon at her home in Belgrade. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:30 on Thursday at St. Francis De Sales Catholic Church in Belgrade. Interment will be at St. Francis De Sales Catholic Cemetery. Visitation will be on Wednesday from 5-8:00 p.m. at Johnson Funeral Home in Belgrade with a Christian Mothers rosary held at 5:30 p.m. and parish prayers held at 7:30 p.m. The visitation will continue one hour prior to the service at the church.
Madeline F. (Wiener) Loch was born on January 16, 1920 on the family farm in rural Belgrade the daughter of Michael and Lena (Spaeth) Wiener. She grew up on the farm and attended a rural country school. On September 9, 1941 Madeline was united in marriage to Eugene G. Loch. To this union four girls and one boy were born. Madeline and Eugene made their home in Belgrade. On September 5, 1977 Eugene passed away, together they were married 36 years.
After Eugene’s death Madeline started working for the grocery store in Belgrade. She spent 20 years there working for the different owners.
Madeline was a member of St. Francis De Sales Catholic Church in Belgrade where she was an active member of the Christian Mothers. She was a member of the VFW Post #1825 Ladies Auxiliary for over 50 years and Madeline was a member of the Senior Citizens Center in Belgrade.
Madeline enjoyed many hobbies including sewing, playing cards, watching Twin’s Baseball, and she loved to cook. Madeline also loved spending time with her friends and family especially her grandchildren and great grandchildren.

Dean A. Brecke, age 73 of Spicer died on Thursday, December 06, 2007 at his home in rural Spicer. Memorial service will be 11:00 am on Monday, December 10, 2007 at Faith Lutheran Church in Spicer. Arrangements are with Harvey Anderson Funeral Home in Willmar.
Dean Albert Brecke was born on May 18, 1934 in Dovre Township, Kandiyohi County, Minnesota, the son of Edward and Irene (Swenson) Brecke. He grew up in the Spicer area and graduated from Willmar High School in the class of 1953. He entered the United States Navy where he served his country for four years. He received an Honorable Discharge in 1957. In October 1959, he married Patricia Carlson in Minneapolis, Minnesota. They had three children: Christopher, Jeffery, and Nicole.
After a long career with the IBM Corporation, he retired and returned to Spicer.
Dean enjoyed being outdoors, hunting and fishing. He also enjoyed traveling especially to Alaska when he had worked there for number of years.
On Thursday, December 6, 2007, Dean passed away at his home in rural Spicer at the age of 73 years.
He is survived by his mother, Irene Brecke of Spicer, sons: Christopher (and Leah) of San Francisco Bay Area, CA, Jeffery (and Toni) of Yucaipa, CA, and six grandchildren: Tyler, Rachel, Hannah, Devon, Jackie, and Daniel. He is also survived by his siblings: Darrell (and Carol) Brecke of Ortonville, Karen Berg of Spicer, Susan (and Tony) Rime of Spicer, Peter (and Julie Simon) Brecke of Atlanta, GA, and Paul (and Sandy) Brecke of Eagan, MN.

Howard Freeberg, 79 of Willmar died on Friday, December 7, 2007 at Rice Memorial Hospital in Willmar. Funeral service will be 2:00 pm on Tuesday at Svea Evangelical Lutheran Church in Svea. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Visitation will be from 5-7 pm on Monday at Harvey Anderson Funeral Home in Willmar and will continue one hour prior to the service at the church on Tuesday.
Howard LeRoy Freeberg was born on October 10, 1928 in Whitefield Township, Kandiyohi County, Minnesota, the son of Algot and Grace (Euling) Freeberg. He grew up in the Svea area and attended Svea School. Howard farmed until he entered the United States Army in 1951 and was stationed at Ft. Eustus, Virginia and Greenland. He received an Honorable Discharge in 1953 and returned to the Willmar area. He was united in marriage to Ruby Larson on June 19, 1954 at First Lutheran Church of Norway Lake. Howard worked road construction throughout Minnesota. In 1967, Howard started working as a heavy equipment operator for the city of Willmar, retiring in 1993.
Howard was a life member of Svea Evangelical Lutheran Church in Svea where he served on the church council for two terms and was head usher for many years. He was a member of the Sons of Norway, Swedish Friends, and American Legion post #167, served as an election judge and was a volunteer at Rice Memorial Hospital.
Howard enjoyed church activities, woodworking, playing cards and bowling. He was always fixing things and working on his Ford vehicles. "Grandpa Howie" especially enjoyed spending time with his grandsons playing cards and driving four wheelers around the Freeberg farm. His family remembers Howard’s generous, hard working personality.
He is survived by his wife Ruby of Willmar and son, Dale (and Joan) Freeberg of Maple Grove, MN and daughter, Diane Freeberg of Plymouth, MN; two grandsons: Jerod and Kory.
He was preceded in death by his parents, step-mother Evelyn, brother Loren and sister, Ardella Myers and step-sister Annette Bosch.

Robert “Bob” P. Olson age 83, of Belgrade died Tuesday afternoon, December 4, 2007 at the Belgrade Nursing Home in Belgrade. Funeral Services will be 2:00 p.m. Friday, December 7, 2007 at Big Grove Lutheran Church. Visitation will be held one hour prior to the service at the church. Burial will be at the church cemetery. Arrangements are with Johnson Funeral Home in Belgrade.
Robert Percy Olson was born on May 30, 1924 in Minneapolis, the son of Alma Olson. He was baptized at Big Grove Lutheran Church on June 14, 1924 and Confirmed on April 10, 1938 at Trinity Lutheran Church. He grew up with his grandparents in the Brooten area and attended elementary in the Kittelson School House and the Brooten High School, graduating in 1942. In 1946 he entered the United States Army, serving until June of 1947 and later in the Air Force from 1951 until 1952. Upon his discharge he returned to the area were he worked various jobs. He especially enjoyed working as a farm hand for his cousin, Donald Olson in Parshall, ND. Throughout his life he lived in Minneapolis, Avon, St. Cloud and Brooten. He became a resident of the Belgrade Nursing Home on January 25, 2000.
Bob was a member of Big Grove Lutheran Church and the Brooten American Legion. He enjoyed singing and playing his guitar.
Bob is survived by numerous cousins and was preceded in death by his mother, Alma; grandparents, Guri and Ole H. Olson; five uncles and four aunts.

James J. Bechthold age 76 of Belgrade, died on Monday morning, December 3, 2007 at his home. Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11:00 AM, Friday at Our Lady of the Lakes Catholic Church in rural Spicer. Interment will be held at the church cemetery. A visitation will be held on Thursday from 5-8:00 PM at the Johnson Funeral Home in Belgrade with Parish Prayers at 5:30 PM and the Visitaton will continue one hour prior to the service at the church.
James Joseph Bechthold was born on June 11, 1931, in Presho, South Dakota, the son of Fred and Cecelia (Kotz). James attended a country grade school and graduated from the 8th grade. On October 17, 1952 he was drafted into the United States Army. Jim served his country during the Korean Conflict. He returned to the Belgrade area on August 24, 1954.
On June 8, 1963 Jim was united in marriage to Ethel T. Williamette at Holy Name Catholic Church in Minneapolis. Two daughters and one son were born to this union. The family made their home in the Burbank Township in rural Kandiyohi County. Jim made his living as a farmer never truly retiring.
Jim was a member of Our Lady of the Lakes Catholic Church. He was on the Burbank Township Board, and also a member of the West Central Mutual Insurance of Grove City Board of Directors, New London American Legion Robert Ihlang Post # 537, and a life member of the Belgrade VFW Daboe-Levorson Post # 1825.
Jim enjoyed farming helping Doug until his illness became too great a burden. He enjoyed his family especially spening time with his grandchildren.
James Joseph Bechthold died on Monday December 3, 2007 at his home in rural Belgrade at the age of 76. He is survived by his wife, Ethel; children, Therese (Ken) Graner of Lanesboro, Judy (Tony) Adkins of Cary, NC, Doug Bechthold of Belgrade; 5 grandchildren, Lynn and Michael Graner, Justin Mueller, Brendan and Colin Adkins. Jim is also survived by his brother, Lyle Bechthold of Woodbury; his sister-in-law, Alvina Bechthold of Belgrade; and several nieces and nephews.

Ruth Arlene Pelkey, 82, of New London, entered the realm of eternal peace at 1:30 am Saturday December 1, 2007, at Rice Memorial Hospital. Funeral services will be 1:30 pm Saturday, December 8, 2007, at Grace United Methodist Church in Paynesville. Visitation will be at the Johnson Funeral Home in New London on Friday December 7, from 1 until 8 pm, with a prayer service at 7:30 pm. Friends may also call on Saturday 1 hour prior to services at the church. A private burial ceremony will be held at Roseville Cemetery, Hawick at a later date.
Ruth was born on May 9, 1925, in Manchester, South Dakota, to Henry and Edna (Koepp) Wolff. Ruth grew up in the Clara City, Minnesota, where she attended grade school, until her father passed away, and then the Wolff family moved to Paynesville, Minnesota, where Ruth graduated from high school in 1943. After a brief period of work in Chicago, Ruth returned to Minnesota, and was united in marriage to Raymond R. Pelkey on March 2, 1946, at her family farm in rural Hector, Minnesota. After several years in the area of Norwood, Minnesota, where the union was blessed with a son and a daughter, the Pelkey family purchased a home in New London Township in 1950; the couple then was blessed with five more boys. Ruth and Ray shared 43 years of marriage until Ray passed away in 1989. Ruth continued to live in the family home until two years ago, when she moved into the Glen Oaks Village Apartments in New London.
Ruth was an active member of the Hawick United Methodist Church, where she loved to sing, worship and participate in the women’s group activities. She also served on the church board in various roles throughout her time as a member. Ruth was a firm believer in the power of prayer and in trusting God.
Ruth touched the lives of many people, from young to old. She was always interested in education, and kept active in the New London-Spicer school system, where she worked for 22 years as a teacher’s aid and after her retirement she continued to help children as a volunteer in the Foster Grandparent program. After her husband Ray was injured in an accident, Ruth also worked as an aide at Glen Oaks in New London for many years.
Ruth loved to bake and cook (always ‘from scratch’), and her pies, pastries, cookies and more were loved by family and friends. (Her lemon meringue pie was legendary!) She also loved to garden and she could be often found out in her flower bed. She also loved to sing, and her beautiful soprano voice was featured at weddings and celebrations throughout the years. She had skillful hands which she used to embroider, sew, knit and crochet, and her legacy in these areas can be found today in the homes of her children and grandchildren.
Ruth is survived by her children, John (and Mary) of Duluth, Shirley Nelson of Willmar, Robert (and Teresa) of Willmar, Howard of Belgrade, Ross Ian Teresa) of Dry Ridge, Kentucky, Rolf of Spring Valley, Illinois, and Russell (and Mary) of Willmar; 18 grandchildren and 15 great grandchildren; her younger brother, William (and Jackie) Wolff of Palos Verdes, California, sister-in-law, Mildred Wolff of Cokato, step brothers, Lester (and Mary) Wulkan of Florida and Wesley Wulkan of Hector and step-sister, Arlene (and Einar) Swanson of New Mexico.
In addition to her husband, Raymond, she was preceded in death by her parents, sister, Dorothy and brother, Henry.

Waldo J. G. was born on March 8, 1924, in Pillsbury Township, Swift County, Minnesota the son of Theodore and Emma (Broberg) Johnson. He was raised on a farm and attended country school. When he completed his schooling, Waldo farmed for a number of years with his brother, Harry, and then on his own. On February 25, 1950, he was united in marriage to June Noland. He continued farming and later was a salesman. In 1966, they moved to Alexandria where he was an insurance agent with, Holmes City Insurance Agency. June preceded him in death on October 15, 1982. On October 1, 1983, he was united in marriage to Virginia Fransen Peterson at Evangelical Covenant Church of Alexandria. After retiring in 1990, they moved to Kerkhoven.
He was a lifetime member of Salem Covenant Church, always supporting the mission of the church in as many ways as possible.
Surviving are his wife, Virginia; children, Steven (and Jill) Johnson of Birmingham, Alabama; Pamela (and Jim) Larson of Eagan; Colleen (and Scott) Koltes of Inver Grove Heights; Michelle Fulghum of Bear, Delaware; Becky (and Ken) Major of Grand Rapids; 12 grandchildren, Brent and Brandon Johnson, Jason and Jeremy Larson, Jamie (and Jon) Hansberger, Jessica, Krista, Christopher, Amanda and Nichole Fulghum, Jeff and Todd Major; four great grandchildren and sisters-in-law, Millie Johnson of Willmar and Helen Johnson of Wyoming.
Besides his first wife, June, Waldo was preceded in death by his parents, five brothers, three sisters and grandson, Steven Fulghum.
