Friedrich “Fred”O. Brammer, age
88 of Spicer, formerly of Louisville, NE, and Burbank, CA, and Lincoln
Nebraska, died Sunday morning, August 27, 2006 at his home.
Funeral services will be 11:00 a.m. Thursday, August 31, 2006 at Peace
Lutheran Church in New London where visitation will be held one hour prior
to the services.
Graveside services will be held at 9:00 a.m. Friday, September 1, 2006
at Immanuel Lutheran Cemetery in Louisville, NE.
Arrangements are with the Johnson Funeral Home in New London.
The Nebraska kid who built airplanes…As the firstborn of the Brammer
family in 1917, Fred was to usher in a number of “firsts”in
his life. The railroad town of Louisville in Eastern Nebraska was an interesting
place to grow up. Nestled between the Platte River/lakes, the railroad
tracks and Ash Grove Cement Plant. Fred was raised by George and Margareta.
Robert, Louis and sister Marguerite came along behind him. Life was good
with Pal his dog, a small pet alligator, the lakes to swim in and a dad
with a job during the depression. They even had a Harley Davidson with
a sidecar for family transportation. A highpoint of his teen years was
a Boy Scout trip to Alabama and the Black Hills in an open wagon pulled
by a car!
As a boy of 10, Fred’s interest with airplanes started with an airplane
ride he took over his hometown and a model military biplane, he & Robert
built. In 1937, while working at the Cement Plant, a buddy asked if he
would help him move to California. On a whim the trip was made. The palm
trees and starlets enticed him to stay. But he didn’t forget a young
woman back home named Edith. They’d been confirmed together and after
four years of letters (about $16.00 worth) and several visits, he married
her and took her off the farm to go west.
In 1937 he was influenced by a test pilot he met to attend Curtis Wright
Technical Institute. His first job was at North American working on propeller
driven training planes. Lockheed Aircraft Corporation was to be his career
job for the next 45 years where he worked in planning the tools needed
for the prototypes of most of their planes. Having the highest level of
security clearance, his latter years were with the Top Secret, Kelly Johnson “Skunk
Works”division of the company. He always reported his job to be building
handles for wheel barrels! Some of his projects were:
•The floats for the Sir Hubert Wilkens Expedition plane to the Antarctica
•Retrofitted the Mustang Plane which set a cross country record in the Bendix
Race (hanging in the LA Air Museum)
•P-38 (significant to winning WWII)
•Constellation (or the Connie, built for TWA & owned by Howard Hughes)
•Stealth Fighter
•Blackbird (corrugated titanium covering to withstand heat)
•Black Box for the Columbia Shuttle
Being homesick did not last long for Fred and Edith because one by one
about 15 family members and friends followed them by making a move from
Nebraska to California. That togetherness was needed in 1945 when the sad
news came that Fred’s bother Louis was killed in a B-29 military
air test flight air crash. Soon after his death in 1945 Florence came along
to brighten up life, followed by Sharon in 1949.
An important part of their family life was their church. Fred was the Building
Committee Chairman for the beautiful First Lutheran Church in Burbank.
He served on most of the committees there, including the startup of a school
for his daughters. He also loved his tools, photo taking and flowers.
Edith was the love of his life, which was apparent to anyone who saw the
two of them together. In 1956 he built a new house for the family in Burbank,
California, their home for 38 years. Fred took his family on many vacations,
and took Edith “back home”to the great Vogler farms every year.
In 1995 Fred built a lovely home in Lincoln Nebraska so that she could
be with her family again. Losing her to a stroke in 1995 was deeply felt,
but, a move to New London, Minnesota in 2001 allowed Fred to enjoy his
daughters and their families for 6 years. He was so appreciative of the
love and help from Compassionate Care, Lake Region Home Health, Bev Jensen,
Cindy Coyle, friends at Glen Oaks and Peace Lutheran Church.
Most of all, with a story or joke Fred brought a smile to those he knew
or met, making most people’s day a little brighter.
