Helen E. Gallagher, 74, of Kerkhoven died Thursday at Glen Oaks Care Center in New London. A funeral service will be 10:30 am, Tuesday a Calvary Lutheran Church in Murdock. Burial is in the church cemetery. Visitation will be from 5-8:00 pm Monday at Harvey Anderson Funeral Home in Kerkhoven and on Tuesday one hour prior to services at the church.

Helen Emma Gallagher was born November 8, 1933 at Kerkhoven , MN, the daughter of Elmer and Emma (Marquardt) Eckman. She received her education in Kerkhoven. Helen was united in marriage to Verne Thorson in 1954 in Kerkhoven. To this union seven children were born. In June, 1966, Helen married James Gallagher. To this union two children were born. Following their marriage they lived in the Kerkhoven and Murdock communities. James preceded her in death on November 8, 1975.

Helen was a member of Calvary Lutheran Church and enjoyed helping out whenever possible. When the kids were growing up she was also active as a band mother.

Surviving are her children, Jeffrey Thorson of Mound, Pam (and Woody) Nelson of Kerkhoven, Timothy "Hans" Thorson of Benson, Jennifer (and Ellery) Wick of Red Wing, Micheal (and Julie) Thorson, of Mound, Patrick (and Susan) Thorson of Murdock, Kevin (and Lori) Thorson of Kerkhoven, John (and Kim) Gallagher of Otsego and Christine (and George) Wedding of New London; 18 grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. Also surviving is her sister, Betty (and Allen) Leaf of Blaine.

In addition to her husband, James, she was preceded in death by her parents, brother, Harold Eckman, sister, Doris Johnson, and grandson, Jesse Thorson.

Tina Bratsch, 87, of Willmar died Thursday, July 31, 2008, at her daughter’s home in New Ulm. The funeral services will be 10:30 am, Tuesday at First Covenant Church in Willmar. Burial is in Fairview Cemetery in Willmar. Visitation will be from 5-8:00 pm on Monday at Harvey Anderson Funeral Home and on Tuesday one hour prior to the service at the church.

Tina was born December 10, 1920 in Kandiyohi Co., MN, the daughter of Claus and Anna (Baumann) Ruter. She received her education at District #111. On February 21, 1944, Tina was united in marriage to Delmer Bratsch in Willmar. Following their marriage they lived in Willmar, where she worked at The Puritan Cafe. She later worked for the National Youth Association, and as a babysitter and mid-wife.

Tina was a member of First Covenant Church, where she served as a Sunday School Teacher and Sunday School Superintendant for 25 years. She was also active with the Covenant Women and Missions.

Surviving are her children, Delmer Bratsch of Annandale; Larry (and Myrna) Bratsch of Springfield, MO; Kathy (and Steve) Christensen of New Ulm; and Marty (and Donna) Bratsch of Little Falls; 14 grandchildren and 16 great-grandchildren. Also surviving are two sisters, Louise (and Aldrich) Aasen and Doris (and Dick) Lynam both of Willmar; brother, Claus (and Kathy) Ruter of New Prague; sister-in-law, Adella Kuhn of Minneapolis; and several nieces, nephews and other relatives.

She was preceded in death by her parents, five brothers, four sisters and husband, Delmer on October 3, 2007.

Jean J. Peterson, age 65 of Brooten, died unexpectedly Tuesday morning, July 29, 2008 at the Glacial Ridge Hospital in Glenwood. Funeral services will be 2:00 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 2, 2008 at Trinity Lutheran Church in Brooten. Burial will be in Grace Lutheran East Cemetery in Belgrade. Visitation will be Friday from 5:00 – 8:00 p.m. at the Johnson Funeral Home in Belgrade and for one hour prior to the services at the church.

Jean Jennette Peterson was born on June 9, 1943 in Belgrade, the daughter of Ervin and Irene (Frederick) Glauvitz. She was baptized and confirmed at Grace Lutheran Church in Belgrade and attended Belgrade High School, graduating in 1961. After graduation she continued her education at St. Cloud State University, where she earned a BA in 1965. In December of 1965, she was united in marriage to Carol Peterson in Belgrade. She traveled with Carol while he served in the U.S. Army. They made 3 trips to Germany, one to Ft. Ord, California, before spending his last 5 years of service in Ft. Knox, Kentucky. They then returned to Minnesota and settled in Brooten in 1981. She served as a substitute teacher for 6 years and was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church where she was active in ladies aid.

Jean enjoyed collecting apple themed items and Coca-Cola merchandise. She also enjoyed garage sales with Carol and spending time and playing with her grandchildren. She was a loving caregiver and wife to Carol and always made family the most important part of her life.

Jean died unexpectedly Tuesday morning, July 29, 2008 at the Glacial Ridge Hospital in Glenwood at the age of 65. She is survived by her husband, Carol of Brooten; Sons; Steve (Deb) Peterson of Minneapolis, Todd Peterson of Minneapolis and Jonathan Peterson of Brooten; and two grandchildren, Samantha and Danielle; brother, Earl (Becky) Glauvitz of Beaver Dam, WI and sister, Eleanor (John) Strand of White Bear Lake.

Jean was preceded in death by her parents.

David M. Miller, 85, of rural Grove City, died Monday, July 28, 2008 at his home. Funeral services will be 10:00 am Friday at Evangelical Free Church in rural Paynesville. Interment will be at Burr Oak Cemetery in rural Grove City. A visitation will be held on Thursday from 4-8:30 pm at Evangelical Free Church in rural Paynesville and continue one hour prior to the service. Inlieu of flowers memorials preferred.

David M. Miller was born on February 25, 1923, at the family farm in rural Kokomo, Indiana, the son of Menno I. and Susan (Schlabach) Miller. He accepted Christ as his savior in his teen years and was baptized in the Old Order Amish Church. In 1946 he was united in marriage to Susana Herschberger. This union was blessed with 13 children.

David moved his family to their present home in rural Grove City in 1962, where they became faithful members of Believer Fellowship Mennonite. David remained a member until the time of his death.

David enjoyed farming and was actively involved with the farm until his retirement in 1992. Afterward he enjoyed helping his sons until he was no longer able.

David M. Miller died on Monday, July 28, 2008, at his home in rural Grove City, he was 85. He is survived by his wife of 62 years, Susana; children, Neoma (and Jerry) Miller of Eden Valley, Moses (and Mary) Miller of Crossville TN, Levi (and Sara) Miller of Bloomfield, IN, Thomas Miller of Grove City, Homer (and Mary Ann) Miller of Millersburg, OH, Sara Miller of Litchfield, Anna (and Marcus) Yoder of Grove City, Jesse Miller of Grove City, Nancy (and Steve) Stoll of Oden, IN, David Jr. (and Ester) Miller of Lexington IN, Earl (and Patricia) Miller of Cross Hill SC, Glen (and Laura) Miller of Mechanicsburg, OH, Mary (and Tim) Edmonson of Annandale; 40 grandchildren; and 25 great grandchildren. He is also survived by is brothers, Levi of Kalona, IA, Moses of Buffalo, MO; sister, Sara of Kalona, IA.

David was preceded in death by his parents, Menno I. and Susan Miller; sister Elva; brother Ivan; grandsons, Leonard Yoder and Samuel Miller.

Wilma H. Daugherty, age 100 of Bloomington, formerly of the New London and Spicer area, died Sunday, July 20, 2008 at Martin Luther Care Center in Bloomington. Mass of Christian Burial will be 11:00 a.m. Friday, August 1, 2008 at Our Lady of the Lakes Catholic Church in Spicer, with visitation being held one hour prior to the services. Burial will be in St. Mary’s Catholic Cemetery in Willmar. Arrangements are with Johnson Funeral Home in New London.

Wilma Hilda Daugherty was born on January 17, 1908 in Canby, the daughter on Herman and Wilhelmina (Yungtum) Schumacher. She grew up in rural Minnesota until her family settled in the Willmar and New London Area. She attended New London High School, graduating in 1926. After her school she worked in sales in Willmar and Minneapolis. In 1940, Wilma was united in marriage to Joseph Merlin Daugherty. To this union, a son and daughter were born. They made their home in Willmar until moving to Henderson Lake in 1961. After Merlin’s death, Wilma moved to New London in 1981 and later too the Twin Cities to be near family.

Wilma died on Sunday, July 20, 2008 at Martin Luther Care Center in Bloomington at the age of 100. She is survived by her children, Dr. John (Judy) Daugherty of Eden Prairie and Sally (Steve) Johnson of Willmar; five grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren and sister, Ione Bell of Florida

Wilma was preceded in death by her husband Merlin; sister, Ella; and brothers, Clarence, Virgil and Alfred.

LeCharl M. “Leigh” Lessman, age 83 of Willmar, died on Sunday, July 27, 2008 at Rice Memorial Hospital in Willmar. Funeral will be 10:30am Wednesday, July 30, 2008 at Redeemer Lutheran Church in Willmar. Burial will be at Cloverleaf Cemetery in Willmar. Visitation will be from 5:00 – 7:00 pm on Tuesday at Harvey Anderson Funeral Home in Willmar and will continue one hour prior to the service at the church on Wednesday.

LeCharl Lessman was born on January 24, 1925, in Madison, South Dakota on a farm, the daughter of Fred and Marie (Schroeder) Lory. She was one of four children.

Leigh was united in marriage to Herbert Lessman on August 29, 1942 at St. John’s Lutheran Church in Madison, South Dakota. They farmed for one year, and then sold the farm and moved to Willmar, Minnesota in 1944. Herbert worked for the Great Northern Railroad. They joined Redeemer Lutheran Church in Willmar in 1944. Leigh belonged to Ladies Aide where she served as secretary and vice-president. She was a volunteer at church where she belonged to Ruth Circle and helped with quilting for missions and crafts for the bazaar. She also was a volunteer for Rice Memorial Hospital for 12 years.

Leigh worked as a cook for the Willmar Public Schools in the 70’s. She enjoyed cooking, baking, embroidery, quilting, and most of all cleaning.

Leigh passed away peacefully at Rice Memorial Hospital in Willmar surrounded by her family early Sunday, July 27, 2008 at Rice Memorial Hospital in Willmar.

Surviving are her six children, daughters: Connie (Jerry) Griffin of Chaska, Gwen Johnson of Columbia Heights, Deb (Kim) Setrum of Willmar, Patricia (Tom) Wall of Spicer; sons: Jim (Donna) Lessman of St. Louis Park, Dick (Jean) Lessman of Willmar; 16 grandchildren; 26 great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren; sister Clara Walterman of Texas; and numerous nieces, nephews and other relatives.

She was preceded in death by her husband Herbert in 1993, and grandchild, parents; two brothers; aunts, uncles and cousins.

Gloria A. Nowacki, 49, of Spicer, died on Friday, July 27, 2008 at her home in rural Spicer. Funeral services are 11:00 am Thursday at Faith Lutheran Church in Spicer. Visitation will be held on Wednesday from 4-8:00 pm at the Johnson Funeral Home in New London, and continue one hour prior to the services at the church. Gloria Ann Nowacki, 49, of Spicer died Friday morning at her home. The service will be Thursday July 31st at 11:00 am at Faith Lutheran Church in Spicer. Visitation will be on Wednesday July 30th from 4-8 pm at Johnson’s Funeral Home in New London,.

Gloria was born on January 6, 1959 in Willmar to Laddie & Leona (Kricl) Cuka. She grew up in Raymond and Graduated from Willmar High School with the class of 1977.

Gloria married Steven Chapin on June 21st, 1980, and work at the Willmar State Hospital, until 1993. In 1995 she opened Gloria’s Daycare, and began foster parenting. Last year she opened, Gloria’s Gardens.

On April 15, 2006 she married Edward Nowacki, at Green Lake Bible Camp in Spicer.

Gloria’s passion was gardening and the outdoors. She grew everything! Her strawberries and raspberries were known throughout the area. Her flowers were absolutely breath taking, along with her landscape.
She loved being with her husband, children, and two grandchildren. They were her life, and meant everything to her. Cooking, baking, and entertaining were very special to her also. Gloria’s love for children was enormous, all her daycare children and foster children were very special to
her. She was a true daycare MOM! She loved each and every one them like they were her very own.

Gloria is survived by her husband, Ed; children, Andrea (and Tim) Dolan, Jenna Chapin, Josh Chapin, special friend of the family Carrie Westre, all of Spicer; step-children, Bri Nowacki (and fiancé Adam Rohne) of Highland Park, Tia Nowacki of Spicer; grandchildren, Brooklyn and Gavin Dolan of Spicer. She is also survived by her Mother, Leona Cuka Miller (and fiancé Oliver Boehmer) of New London; siblings; Melvin (and Gloria) Cuka of Raymond, Jim (and Jill) Cuka of Kendale, TX and Ron (and Lisa) Cuka of New London.

She is preceded in death by her father Laddie.

Kathy M. Reps 37, of Belgrade, died on Thursday at Rice Memorial Hospital. Services will be 2:00 pm Tuesday at First Lutheran Church of Norway Lake; interment will be in the church cemetery. Friends may call on Monday from 5 until 8 pm at First Lutheran Church of Norway Lake and 1 hour prior to services on Tuesday.

Kathleen Marie (Rehn) was born on September 4, 1970, in Willmar, Minnesota the daughter of Gordon and Gayle (Gjelhaug) Rehn. She grew up in Willmar attending Lafayette Elementary and graduating for Willmar High School in 1989. Kathy continued her education at University of Minnesota, Waseca, graduating in 1992.

On September 19, 1992, Kathy was united in marriage to Thomas Reps, at First Lutheran Church of Norway Lake. This union was blessed with two children. Following their marriage they lived in Lewiston from 1992- 1997, when they moved to Clara City and moving to rural Belgrade in 1998.
Kathy was a floral designer for Sally’s Flower House in Willmar, Special Touch Floral in Clara City and Lake Floral in Spicer.

She was baptized and confirmed and was a member of First Lutheran of Norway Lake at the time of her death. She taught Sunday School and played in the Bell Choir.

Her family recalls Kathy’s love for flowers. She was very creative, patient, kind and organized. Kathy love to laugh and was always smiling, she had a great sense if humor and loved to tease Tom and her brother Tim. Whenever they would take a trip Kathy seemed to pack everything but the kitchen sink.

Surviving is her husband, Tom; children, Erin and Andrew, both at home; her mother, Gayle Rehn, of Willmar and brother and sister-in law, Tim (and Pam) Rehn of East Grand Forks, Minnesota. Also surviving are many other family and friends.

Kathy was preceded in death by her father.

Edwin J. DeJongh, 92, of Chisago City, formerly of Willmar and Spicer, died Wednesday, July 23, 2008 at Parmly LifePointes in Chisago City. A service will be held on Saturday, July 26, 2008 at Parmly LifePointes Chapel in Chisago City with visitation one hour prior to service. There will be a visitation on Sunday, from 2-4 pm at Harvey Anderson Funeral Home in Willmar with another service on Monday, July 28, 2008 at 11 AM at First Reformed Church in Rock Rapids, Iowa with visitation one hour prior to service.

Edwin J. DeJongh was born on June 24, 1916, in Edgerton, MN, the son of Rev. John and Ella (Vander Beek) DeJongh. He was the third born of four children. The family moved to Doon, Iowa, and in 1925 to Rock Rapids. Ed’s father was the pastor at First Reformed Church until his retirement in 1940. At the age of 14, Ed began working at Yappen Auto Repair and Battery and later at Van’s Grocery to help support the family during the depression. Ed graduated from Rock Rapids High School in 1933. On July 8, 1941, Ed was united in marriage to Sophia Theodora VanderWilt at Free Grace Reformed Church in Middleburg where his father conducted the ceremony. They made their home in Rock Rapids where Ed continued working at Van’s. From November 1942 until October 1945, Ed served in the United States Army under General George Patton in the European Theatre, 13th Black Cat Armored Division as a tank gunner. Ed’s division was involved in the Battle of the Bulge and had just reached the Bavarian Alps in Austria at the

end of the war where Hitler had his summer retreat. Upon his discharge, Ed and Sophia continued to live in Rock Rapids where they raised their two children, Keith and Ruth. Ed began working for the United States Postal Service in 1945, retiring in 1980. He had been a city mail carrier for eight years prior to becoming a rural carrier.

Since childhood, Ed had been a member of Rock Rapids First Reformed Church. He was an active member, serving as a deacon and as a member of the 1953 building committee. He also was a member of the building expansion committee and managed the worship radio broadcast and sound system. Ed and Sophia were the custodians for over 18 years. The church community was very important in their lives.

After retiring, Ed and Sophia, many times with family and friends, were able to travel to Europe and every state except Hawaii, for about 20 years, they were able to spend the winters in Mesa, Arizona where they eventually bought a second home and were always happy to have visitors come and stay for a while. Their friendly spirits and hospitality granted them friends wherever they went. In 1984, they moved to Spicer, Minnesota and in 1990 to Willmar where they made lasting friendships with wonderful people. Since moving to Spicer and Willmar, they have been members of Hope Presbyterian Church where they remained members. In July 2005, Ed and Sophia moved to Chisago City, MN, where Ed lived at Vindauga View Assisted Living Apartments and Sophia was in Parmly Residence, both in the same building and near Keith and Marlene. Sophia preceded Ed in death on June 4, 2006. Ed later moved to the skilled nursing care residence at Parmly LifePointes.

Ed always wanted to be busy doing something and being helpful and constructive. He was a handy man, repairing, building, wall papering, painting, staining, planting, pruning, pitching pay, helping friends with their farm work. He was a real problem solver, working many miracles out of his workshop. He took great pride and delight in his work especially in seeing the pleasure it brought to others. He loved fishing, traveling, visiting friends, family, and singing as well. As the family traveled, they often sang in four-part harmony. He had a servant spirit that deeply loved the Lord and his family and for such a hard working man, his hands were as soft as a newborn baby.

Surviving are his son, Keith (and Marlene) DeJongh of Chisago City; son-in-law, Dr. Michael Buscemi of Bismarck, ND; three grandchildren, Dr. Sharlene (and John) Arnason of Marine on St. Croix, MN; Michele (and Michael) Schwalbe of Andover; Brian (and Annie) DeJongh of Somerset, WI; seven great grandchildren, Jack and Katherine Arnason, Allison and Will Schwalbe, Eli, Lake and Marin DeJongh. Ed was proud of his children and grandchildren and will lovingly be remembered by his great grandchildren as their “GG” (great grandpa.)

Besides Sophia and his parents, his sisters, Helen Jansen and Bernice Dykstra and brother, Delmer DeJongh, infant brother, Dale preceded Ed in death.

Roger M. Larson, 84, of New London died on Tuesday, July 22, 2008, at Rice Care Center in Willmar. A memorial service will be held at 2:00 pm Sunday, at East Norway Lake Lutheran Church in rural New London. Burial will follow at the church cemetery. A visitation will be held one hour prior to the service at the church. Arrangements are entrusted to Johnson Funeral Home in New London.

Roger Merten Larson was born on February 1, 1924, on the family farm in the Lake Andrew Township, the son of Lawrence and May (Stene) Larson. He was baptized in November of 1924, and confirmed into the Christian Faith in 1938, both at East Norway Lake Lutheran Church, where he was a life long member. Roger received his education at District #104 country school. When he was two years old Roger went to live with his grandparents, Wilda and Gabrial Stene. He lived there until his marriage to Blanche Evenson on December 2, 1944, at the parsonage in Brooten. This union was blessed with two sons. Roger worked for Farmers Produce, Willmar Produce, Marcus Construction, Kibby Construction, and Central Landscaping in Forest Lake. He spent most of his years installing highway guardrails, and working on other road construction projects. Roger retired from road construction at the age of 62. He continued to help his son, Howard on the farm after his retirement.

Roger enjoyed the simple pleasures of life such as puzzles, crosswords, cutting wood, reading western books, and driving the tractors at Howard’s farm. Every Tuesday morning you could find Roger at Hillcrest having coffee and a cookie with Clayton Fossum. Roger deeply enjoyed spending time with his grandchildren and great grandchildren.

Roger M. Larson died on Tuesday, July 22, 2008 at Rice Care Center in Willmar, he was 84. Roger is survived by his wife of 63 years, Blanche; sons, Howard of New London, and Dale (fiancé, Pam) of Belgrade; grandchildren, Shannon (Michael) Shun of Buffalo, Tanya Larson of New London, Dawn Larson of New London, Laurie Larson (special friend Luke), of St. Cloud, Gary (Tia) Larson of Montana; great grandchildren, Maranda, Samantha, Rebecca, Landon, Devin, and Dylan. He is also survived by his brothers, Weldon (Beulah) Larson of Willmar, Richard (Betty) Larson of Willmar; sister, Helen Johnson of Willmar; sister-in-law, Geraldine Larson of Waterville; brother-in-law, Bill (Alice) Larson of St. Cloud; nieces and nephews. Roger was preceded in death by his parents; brothers, David and Gordon; sisters, Lorraine and Deloris.

Richard Flaig, age 55, of Willmar, died on Tuesday, July 22, 2008, at his home in Willmar. Mass of Christian Burial will be 10:00 am on Friday, July 25, 2008, at the Church of St. Mary’s in Willmar. Burial will be at St. Mary’s Catholic Cemetery in Willmar. Visitation will be from 5:00 – 8:00pm on Thursday at Harvey Anderson Funeral Home in Willmar with parish prayers at 7pm followed by Knights of Columbus Rosary Service, visitation will continue one hour prior to the service at the church Friday.

Richard Michael Flaig was born on April 11, 1953, in Redwood Falls, Minnesota, the son of Vernon and Marjorie (Wilt) Flaig. Rich grew up in Redwood Falls where he attended elementary school and in 1966 moved with his family to Willmar. He graduated from Willmar High School in the class 1971. Rich then attended Willmar Community College. He began working for Burlington Northern Railroad as a trackman.

Rich was united in marriage to Lois Schmidt on September 24, 1977, at St. Michael’s Catholic Church in Morgan, Minnesota. The couple lived in Kandiyohi, Minnesota and moved to Willmar in 1974. Four children where blessed to this union. Rich worked for Burlington Northern Railroad for 34 years and currently served as Secretary Treasurer for the Brotherhood of Maintenance of Way (B.M.W.) Union.

He was baptized and confirmed at St. Catherine’s Catholic Church in Redwood Falls. He was a member of the Church of St. Mary in Willmar. Rich was also a member of the Willmar Companionate Friends, Crow River Radio Organization, Catholic Aid Association, and assisted with Prairie Pothole Days.

He enjoyed hunting, fishing, camping, and spending time with his family. His family will always remember the many camping trips they would take every summer. They will also miss Rich’s daily routines of going to McDonalds for breakfast every morning and always taking a daily nap.

On Tuesday, July 22, 2008, Rich passed away at his home in Willmar at the age of 55. He is survived by his wife Lois Flaig of Willmar; children Thomas (and Krista) Flaig of Lanesboro, MN, Ben Flaig, and Suzie Flaig; parents Marjorie and Vernon Flaig all of Willmar; brothers; Randy (and Ruthie) Flaig of Hutchinson, MN; Dave (and Karen) Flaig of Willmar; Daniel (and Peggy) Flaig of Anoka, MN; father-in-law John P. Schmidt of Morgan, MN and several nieces, nephews, and other relatives.

Rich was preceded in death by his grandparents and son Steven on September 18, 1996.

Dennis “Denny” Burns, 64, of Spicer died Monday at his home. His service will be 11 am, Friday at Hope Presbyterian Church, rural Spicer. Burial will be in the Spicer City Cemetery. Visitation will be from Thursday, 5 – 8 pm at Johnson Funeral Home in New London and continue one hour prior to services at the church on Friday.

Denny was born on December 14, 1943, in Spicer, Minnesota, the son of Clarence and Martha (Swart) Burns. He grew up in the Spicer area and attended Willmar High School. On April 17, 1962, he was united in marriage to Beverly DeCatheleneau at Bethel Lutheran Church in Willmar. Denny worked as an over the road trucker, tandem trucker and other jobs but mostly as a heavy equipment operator, retiring in 2007. On August 22, 1998, he married Carol Gehrke in Spicer. Following their marriage, they lived in Spicer. He enjoyed camping, hunting, fishing and snowmobiling. Denny also liked to ride his trike and over the years has played in many pool and dart leagues.

Surviving are his wife, Carol of Spicer; children, Daniel (and Toni) Burns of Raymond; Dave (and Becky) Burns of Dell Rapids, SD; Wayne (and Jacqueline) Burns of Little Falls; Kelly (and Mark) Olmscheid of Belgrade; Amy Burns of Willmar; step-children, Rick (and Jo) Gehrke of Monticello; Steve (and Laurie) Gehrke of Spicer; Troy (and Cathy) Gehrke of Hendersonville, NC; 21 grandchildren and 12 great grandchildren. Also surviving are his siblings, Margaret (and Gaylord) Pederson of Willmar; Martha (and Roger) Braun of St. Francis; John (and Rose) Burns of Sunburg; Jack Burns of Springdale, UT; Cheryl Hegreberg of Becker, MN.

His parents, Clarence, Martha and stepmother, Grace and a sister as a toddler, Ruby and granddaughter, Kourtney, preceded him in death.

Hubert M. Thompson, age 80 of rural New London, died Sunday, July 20, 2008 at his home. A memorial service will be held 2:00 PM Thursday, at East Norway Lake Lutheran Church in rural New London. Burial will be in the church cemetery, where military honors will be provided by the New London American Legion Post. A visitation will be held on Wednesday from 5-8:00 PM at East Norway Lake Lutheran Church and continue one hour prior to the service on Thursday.

Hubert Manford Thompson was born on September 25, 1927, in Hawick, the son of Martin and Helga (Monson) Thompson. He was baptized on November 6, 1927 at Green Lake Lutheran Church in Spicer, and confirmed into the Christian faith on June 21, 1942 at Trinity Lutheran Church in New London. Hubert grew up in New London and attended New London Elementary and High Schools. In 1945 Hubert left high school to serve his country in World War II. In 1947 he returned home where he was united in marriage to Verona Skindelien on June 11, 1949 at East Norway Lake Lutheran Church. Three daughters and one son were blessed to this union. The family lived in the Arc Tander Township in rural New London, where Hubert farmed until 1980. From 1980 to 1990 he was a blade operator for Kandiyohi County and Arc Township.

Hubert was a member of East Norway Lake Lutheran Church, where he was active on the church council, cemetery board, and also the head usher. Hubert was also a member of the Crow River Riders Saddle Club and New London American Legion.

Hubert enjoyed working with horses, wood working, bird watching, listening to polka music, watching western movies, and playing cards. Most of all Hubert enjoyed spending time with his grandchildren and great grandchildren. he was a man of few words, but always got his point across.

Hubert M. Thompson died on Sunday, July 20, 2008, at his home surrounded by his family at the age of 80. He is survived by his wife, Verona; children, Joanne (David) Olson of Edmonton, Alberta, James (Diane) Thompson of Pennock, Mary (Mike) Collins of New London, Marna (Rick) Kallevig of Pennock; 10 grandchildren; 3 great grandchildren; sister, Mickey (Robert) Barber of Maple Grove; sister-in-law, Florence Thompson of Paynesville; brother-in-law, Charles deCathelineau, of Spicer.

Hubert was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers, and one sister.

Dolores Martin age 87 on New London, died Monday morning, July 21, 2008 at Glen Oaks Care Center in New London. Memorial services will be 2 p.m. Friday July 25, 2008 at GlenOaks Care Center in New London with burial at Lebanon Cemetery. Arrangements are with the Johnson Funeral Home of New London.

Dolores Jean Johnson was born on November 28, 1920 in New London, Mn. to Peter G. and Annie M. (Ziehl) Johnson. She grew up in New London. She started Kindergarten at age 4 and when she graduated from New London, in 1937, she was 16. She then went to the MN School of Business and accelerated program and graduated from there in 1938. She then began work at the Kandiyohi Electric Co-op, her first job and their first office secretary. She said, “My desk was 2 saw horses and a plank of wood!” She was there for 9 ½ years. On Sept. 15th, 1946 she was united in marriage to Elmo Shelstad and together they sang and played music on the KWLM Radio. In 1953 Dolores was united in marriage to Odell Martin and together they started their own Accounting Service. Due to failing health, Dolores entered the Glen Oaks Care Center in 1973. She kept busy typing the activity calendars and welcoming new residents. She was a member of Lebanon Lutheran Church where she was confirmed in 1933 and later was a member of the Peace
Lutheran Church where she enjoyed attending services, singing all the old hymns and she knew them all by heart!

She is survived by 3 sisters; Margaret Lundquist and Lucille Seasedt of Paynesville, MN, and Maxine Meyers of Redwood Falls, MN and nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents and a younger brother.

Helen C. Dwyer, age 81 of New London, died Sunday morning, July 20, 2008 at Rice Memorial Hospital in Willmar. Funeral services will be 11:00 a.m. Thursday, July 24th, at Peace Lutheran Church in New London. Burial will be in Lebanon Cemetery in New London. Visitation will be 5-7:00 p.m., Wednesday at Johnson Funeral Home in New London and for one hour prior to the services at the church.

Helen Clarice Bakke Dwyer was born on July 28, 1926, in Warren, the daughter of Clarence and Irene (Olson) Bakke. She was baptized in Warren and confirmed at Gloria Dei Lutheran Church in Redwood Falls. She graduated from Redwood Falls High School and continued her education at Miller Hospital in St. Paul in X-ray training. On Aug. 29, 1947, Helen was united in marriage to Francis Dwyer at Christ Lutheran Church in St. Paul. To this union three daughters and a son were born. After the early years in Warren, Minneapolis, and Chicago, they made their home in Redwood Falls and later Diamond Lake near Atwater, where they were active in the communities and churches. They spent their last few years together in New London where they were members of Peace Lutheran Church. They were able to share in 47 years of marriage before Francis’ death on July 20, 1994. At the age of 70, Helen went back to work at AMI in Spicer and later volunteered as a Grandmother at Prairie Woods Elementary School. She loved her Bible
study and church work group.

Helen is survived by her children, Cathy (Steve) LaCount of Owatonna, Nancy (Gerry) Fladeboe of New London, Sue (Steve) Drummond of Alexandria and Pat Dwyer of New London. Helen especially loved being a grandmother and is survived by Casey Conlin, Jennifer Schmidt, Ryan (Claudia) Conlin, Marty (Heidi) Fladeboe, Steve Fladeboe, Morgan Drummond, Joe Drummond, Sam Drummond, and Megan Dwyer and Ali Dwyer; step-grandchildren, Jessica LaCount, Ben (Sheila) LaCount and Liz (Nick) Bartz; great-grandchildren, Elsie and Jack Fladeboe, Gavin Conlin, Finnley Drummond and step-great-grandchildren, Hazel and Owen LaCount. Helen is also survived by daughter-in-law, Lynn Dwyer of New London; sister, Mary J. (Paul) Phillips of Long Lake; sister-in-law, Mary Dwyer; brothers-in-law, Tom (Kathy) Dwyer and Joe (Marilyn) Dwyer and numerous much-loved nieces and nephews.

Helen was preceded in death by her husband, Francis; parents; and sister, Janet.

Helen’s family expressed heart-felt appreciation for all the love and support these past months from Helen’s, family, friends, doctors, nurses and Hospice volunteers, who lovingly cared for her.

Joan M. Peters 78, formerly of Willmar, died on Wednesday July 16, 2008, at Ebenezer Care Center, Minneapolis. Memorial services will be 11 am at Redeemer Lutheran Church with interment at Cloverleaf Cemetery. Friends may call Thursday 1 hour prior to services at the church. Arrangements are with Harvey Anderson Funeral Home and West Central Cremation Service.

Joan Marie Peters was born on May 17, 1930, at Bismarck, North Dakota, the daughter of Henry Fred and Elizabeth (Neeb) Peters. She attended elementary schools in Bismarck and graduated from Willmar High School in 1949. Joan continued her education at Drew Business College graduating in 1952. Joan worked as a secretary for the Corps of Engineers until 1976, when she retired and later moved to Minneapolis in 1989, living at Ebenezer Towers and later moved to Ebenezer Care Center where she was at the time of her death.

Joan was baptized at Zion Lutheran Church, Bismarck, North Dakota on June 8, 1930, and was confirmed on July 2, 1944, at Redeemer Lutheran Church, Willmar, Minnesota. She was active in music at Redeemer Lutheran, having played the church organ for 20 years and was a member of the choir.  Joan also taught Sunday School.

She was a member of Walther League, BPW and the Humane Society.

Joan is survived by her brother and sister-in-law, Don and Margaret Peters of Park Rapids. Also surviving are her nieces, nephews and many cousins.

She was preceded in death by her parents and brother Gene in January 2008.

 

Elaine Lindquist, 91, of Maplewood formerly of Willmar, died Thursday at Maplewood Care Center in Maplewood. Her funeral will be 11 am, Wednesday at Woodbury Baptist Church, 6695 Upper Afton Rd, Woodbury. Visitation will be one hour prior to service at the church on Wednesday. Burial will be at 4:00 pm, at Evergreen Cemetery, rural Blomkest. Arrangements are pending with Harvey Anderson Funeral Home in Willmar.

Elaine was born on March 20, 1917, in rural Willmar, MN, the daughter of Andrew and Hilma (Renstrom) Renstrom. She attended grade school at District 64. After her schooling, Elaine worked as a housekeeper in the area. During the depression, Elaine moved to Minneapolis and continued working as a homemaker.

On June 5, 1940, she was united in marriage to Lloyd Lindquist at Blomkest Baptist Church. They farmed in the Blomkest area and she worked as a waitress at Harry’s Corner and as a cook at Willmar State Hospital. In 1967, Lloyd was transferred to St. Paul Park with the Minnesota Department of Transportation they moved to St. Paul. Elaine then worked for an insurance company and later the Department of Economic Security, retiring in 1981. In 1986, they returned to Willmar where they spent their retirement years. Lloyd preceded her in death on March 18, 1996. She continued to live in Willmar until 2001 when she moved back to St. Paul and in 2003, she moved into Sharon and Tony’s home.

Elaine was baptized on August 5, 1934 at Blomkest Baptist Church where she was a pianist for many years as well as an alto in duets. Since moving back to St. Paul in 2001, she was attending Woodbury Baptist with Sharon.

Her family remembers her gift of cooking and baking. Her tasty treats of cinnamon rolls, pies, cakes, cookies and bars will be missed by many as well as a cup of coffee for anyone who visited. She had a wonderful sense of humor and a twinkle in her eye. She not only was a compassionate caregiver but also one who never complained. Elaine loved music and always tried to be active in her church and community, leaving big shoes to fill.

Surviving are her daughter, Sharon (and Tony) Boekhoff of Maplewood; three grandchildren, Dale (and Candy) Hoehn, Julie (and Loren) Howell, Scott Boekhoff; eight great grandchildren, Alyssa Marie Howell, Karlie Amber, Mallory Rose, Kayleeann Joy and Micah Phillip Hoehn, Jacquelin Renae, Shawn Timothy and Joshua Boekhoff; and one great great grandson, Gannon Boekhoff.

In addition to her husband and parents, her sisters, Pear and Marion Hanson and brothers, Stanley, Eugene and Gordon Renstrom, preceded her in death.

Emma B. Moore, 92, of Willmar, died peacefully at her home on Sunday, February 17, 2008. Her memorial service will be 11 am Saturday, July 19, 2008 at Bethel Lutheran Church in Willmar. Burial will be in Bethel Lutheran Cemetery. Arrangements are with Harvey Anderson Funeral Home in Willmar.

Emma was born on March 17, 1915, in rural North Dakota, the daughter of Anton and Anna (Heastra) Korinek. She grew up on a farm near Breckenridge, MN, and after graduating from high school she moved to New York City where she was a nanny for several years. In 1940, she moved to Willmar where she opened the Home Lunch Restaurant with her Aunt Barbara Dvorak. On October 18, 1942, she was united in marriage to George Moore. During WW II, while George served in the Army, she worked in Seattle as “Rosy the Riveter” and later moved to Minneapolis and worked in an ammunition plant.

After George’s discharge, they lived in Willmar and worked at S&L and then later as a cook at Lincoln School for many years. She was a member of Bethel Lutheran Church.

Surviving are her daughters, Karen Hernandez of Prior Lake, Marleen (and Dan) Rippeth of Inman, SC and Lynn Moore of Willmar; four grandchildren, Kristine (and David) Pierce, Dr. Eric Hernandez, Michael (and Rachelle) Hernandez and Jennifer Rippeth and four great grandchildren, Simon Pierce, Roman Hernandez, Warren Hernandez and Arabella Pierce.

Her parents preceded her in death, husband, George on August 6, 2003, son-in-law, Dr. Oddie Hernandez, two sisters, Jessie Shockley and Rose Nicklas and four brothers, Matt, Ed, Alfred and Bill Korinek.

Myron C. “Mike” Schroeder 85, of Willmar, died on Monday at St. Cloud Hospital. The funeral service will be 1:30 pm Friday at Calvary Lutheran Church with interment in the church cemetery. Friends may call on Thursday from 5 until 8 pm at Harvey Anderson Funeral Home and on Friday 1 hour prior to services at the church.

Myron Charles “Mike” Schroeder was born on June 16, 1923, at Danube, Minnesota, the son of Fred and Helen (Pagels) Schroeder. He grew up in Danube where he attended his schooling.

Myron served in the US Army, from March 2, 1943 to December 3, 1945. He was in the 220th Armored Engineer Battalion, known as “The Liberators”, stationed in Germany. They were among the first group to release prisoners from Dachau Concentration Camp. Myron was awarded the Silver Star on June 17, 1945, and the French Croix De Guerre on July 10, 1945, for his military service.

On August 12, 1945, Myron was united in marriage to Lila Haugen in Willmar, Minnesota. This union was blessed with two children. In 1953, he and his brother-in-law Vernon Kaiser, purchased Boehner Auto Body, which was re-named Willmar Auto Body. Following the death of his partner, Mike continued to operate the business until his retirement in 1991. Lila preceded him in death on August 23, 2000.

He was baptized and confirmed at Zion United Methodist Church at Danube and was an active member of Calvary Lutheran Church in Willmar at the time of his death. He served on the church council as a Trustee, ushered and served on the cemetery board.

Myron served on the Willmar Fire Departments for 23 years, retiring in 1976, due to his health. He had served as Assistant Fire Chief and retired as a Captain.  He was a life member and past Commander of American Legion Post #167 of Willmar.

Myron was a special person, always willing to help at home and give a hand helping his children with whatever they needed. He enjoyed dancing, playing cards, doing puzzles and always looked forward to a Sunday afternoon drive with his son Mike. Myron continued to use his auto body skills and knowledge of cars, when attending the auto auction, to give his opinion of the condition of the cars up for auction. Family was important to him and he was looking forward to the 150th family reunion of the Schroeder family this coming August.

On Monday, July 7, 2008, Myron died at the St. Cloud Hospital at the age of 85 years. Surviving are his children, Michael Schroeder, Willmar and Melissa (and Bryce) Luthens, Shakopee. Also surviving is his aunt, Jeanette Voelz of Winthrop and many nieces and nephews.

In addition to his wife Lila, Myron was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers and one sister.


Barbara J. Johnson, 77, of Paynesville died peacefully at her home, surrounded by her family and friends, on Tuesday, July 08, 2008. Funeral services will be 10:30 AM Saturday, at Paynesville Lutheran Church. Burial will follow at Old Eden Lake Cemetery in rural Eden Valley. A visitation will be held from 5-8:00 PM on Friday at the Johnson Funeral Home in Paynesville and continue one hour prior to the services at the church.

Barbara Jean (Coulter) Johnson was born February 22, 1931 on the family farm north of Eden Valley, the daughter of John and Blanche (Mills) Coulter. She attended country school through fifth grade, continuing her education at Eden Valley Public Schools. She graduated with the Class of 1948. On November 10, 1951 she was joined in marriage to Robert Dean Johnson of Hector MN. They made their home at Hector for 34 years. They moved to Lake Koronis near Paynesville in June 1985 and later in July 2007 moved to their present home in Paynesville MN. They are the parents of three children. Barbara was a baptized member of the Eden Valley Church of God. She served her Church in many capacities through the years. She was a Sunday school teacher, Sunday School Superintendent and loved being a choir member. She served the Minnesota State Conference of the Churches of God as Treasurer for 14 years. At present she was serving as President of the Old Eden Lake Cemetery Association.

Barbara loved nature, especially walking in the woods with her faithful companion Daisy, working with flowers, music, decorating, cooking and entertaining family and friends and of course making new friends. She enjoyed laughter and fun, playing board and card games. Most enjoyable was beating Bob in a card game. Barbara nearly always found humor in any situation. Her ability to tell a joke or humorous story borders on legendary. Another favorite pastime was traveling. In past years she and Bob traveled to many different places. She enjoyed learning the history of these areas. She loved her grandchildren and didn’t hesitate to claim other people’s grandchildren as her own.

Barbara died of pancreatic cancer at home with her family by her side on Tuesday, July 8, 2008, she was 77. She is survived by her husband Bob, son Brad Johnson of Sartell, daughter Jennifer (John) Nordberg of Brooklyn Center, son Rodd (Pam) Johnson of Chaska, four official grandchildren, numerous unofficial grandchildren, brother Jim (Nancy) Coulter of Isanti and many other relatives and friends. She was preceded in death by her parents, two sisters, Virginia Albright, Vivian Coulter (in infancy) and brother Jerry Coulter.

She awaits the trumpet call of the Master.

John Rhoda, age 70 of rural Raymond died on Saturday, July 5, 2008 at Rice Memorial Hospital in Willmar. Memorial service will be 10:30 am on Wednesday, July 9, 2008 at Kerkhoven Lutheran Church in Kerkhoven. Visitation will be one hour prior to the service at the church on Wednesday. Arrangements with Harvey Anderson Funeral Home in Kerkhoven.

John William Gilbert Rhoda was born on December 31, 1937 on the family farm in rural Raymond, the son of Herbert and Agnes (Peglow) Rhoda. He attended country school and graduated from Raymond High School in the class of 1956. He worked on the family farm. He married Deanna Larson on August 8, 1959 at the Presbyterian Church in Litchfield. The couple lived and farmed next to the Rhoda family farm and John also worked for Farmers Produce and later Hanson Silo of Lake Lillian. John also began the Meadowland Game Farm. They moved to Brainerd, Minnesota for some time. John worked as a caretaker for the Ojibwa Park on North Long Lake in Brainerd. In 2001, he retired back to the family farm in the Raymond area.

John was baptized and confirmed at Trinity Lutheran Church in Raymond, and was a member at Calvary Lutheran Church in Willmar where he served as an usher for many years. He was currently a member of Kerkhoven Lutheran Church in Kerkhoven.

John enjoyed being outdoors, farming, especially the game animals, and his dogs. He also enjoyed John Deere Tractors and fishing.

John is survived by his wife Deanna of rural Raymond; children: Wanda (Steve) Frank of Willmar, Kevin (Janell) Rhoda of Brainerd, Craig (Melissa) Rhoda of Kerkhoven, Paul (Sarah) Rhoda of Brainerd, Kyle Rhoda of Raymond, Gene (Carrie) Rhoda of Foley, Rebecca (Scott) Knutson of Belview, Michelle (Philip) Marcus of Raymond, Glen (Camille) Rhoda of Willmar; 26 grandchildren; and brother Herbert Henry (JoAnn) Rhoda of New London; sister-in-law Lavonne Rhoda of Raymond; and several nieces, nephews and other relatives.

He was preceded in death by his parents, and children Scott and Cindy in infancy; and by his brother Lloyd.

Earl Eugene Johnson, age 89, of Kerkhoven died on Wednesday July 2, 2008 at Infinia in Willmar. Memorial service will be 11am on Friday, July 11 at Kerkhoven Lutheran Church in Kerkhoven. Burial will be in Hillside Cemetery in Kerkhoven. Visitation will be on 5-7pm on Thursday at Harvey Anderson Funeral Home in Kerkhoven.

Earl Eugene Johnson was born on January 20, 1919 in Hayes Township, Swift County, Minnesota, the son of John H. and Alice (Lindgren) Johnson. He grew up in the Kerkhoven area where he attended country school and continued his education at Morris Agriculture School. He entered the United States Army where he served his country during WWII; stationed in the Panama Canal. He returned to work on the family farm. On June 4, 1949 he was united in marriage to Helen Corrine Rime at Norway Lake Lutheran Church. The couple lived and farmed on Earl’s family farm until 1967 and moved into Kerkhoven in 1968. Earl then began working for the Farmers Elevator in Kerkhoven for 20 years before retiring.

Earl was baptized and confirmed at Monson Lake Lutheran Church where he served as a trustee, treasurer and usher. He was currently a member of Kerkhoven Lutheran Church in Kerkhoven. He was also a member of Kerkhoven Rescue Squad, Kerkhoven American Legion Brenden-Johnson Post #223.

Earl’s hobbies included: reading, word puzzles, gardening and he was very meticulous with his yard always pulling weeds. His family remembers Earl’s hardworking ethic and punctuality. His family remembers Earl as a very loving and caring husband.

Earl is survived by his children: David Johnson (and special friend Sherrie McCoy) of Kerkhoven, Linda Johnson of West St. Paul, Diane (and Dale) Magnusson of Hudson, Wisconsin; two grandsons: Leif and Carl Magnusson; sister Gladys Paulson of Benson; and several nieces nephews and other relatives.

Earl was preceded in death by his parents and wife Helen in 2003.

Edwin “Ed” Skogstoe, age 89, of Kerkhoven died on Wednesday, July 2, 2008 at Bethesda Heritage Center in Willmar. Funeral service will be 1:30pm on Monday at Kerkhoven Lutheran Church in Kerkhoven. Burial will be at Hillside Cemetery in Kerkhoven. Visitation will be 5-7pm on Sunday at Harvey Anderson Funeral Home in Kerkhoven and will continue one hour prior to the service at the church on Monday.

Edwin Skogstoe was born on August 2, 1918 in Sioux Rapids, Iowa, the son of Martin and Susanna (Staurland) Skogstoe. He moved to Minnesota with his family and they settled in Kerkhoven. Ed attended country school District #79 in rural Kerkhoven. He worked on the family farm in Kerkhoven. He was united in marriage to Adeline Njos on October 18, 1946, in Sunburg. Three children where blessed in this union. The couple farmed in the Murdock area, and in 1951 moved to a farm southwest of Sunburg. They moved to Kerkhoven in 1966, when Ed began working for the Swift County Highway Department. In addition to his 20 years of farming Ed worked for the highway department for 17 years retiring in 1983.

Ed was baptized at First Lutheran Church in Sioux Rapids, Iowa, and confirmed at Kerkhoven Lutheran Church. When they lived on Monson Lake he was a member of Monson Lake Lutheran Church where he served as Trustee. Ed was currently a member of Kerkhoven Lutheran Church. He was also a member of the Willmar Fraternal Order of Eagles Aerie #2334.

Ed’s hobbies included: reading, working on crossword puzzles, listening to music (especially waltzes), and playing cards. Ed’s passion was farming (always using John Deer Tractors) and being outdoors, and fishing. He enjoyed having coffee and visiting with friends. His family remembers the many car trips they would take growing up, and how Ed would always encourage them to sing songs to pass the time.

Ed is survived by his loving wife of 61 years, Adeline of Kerkhoven, daughters: Trudy (and Bruce) Roever of Frisco, Texas, JoAnn (and Daniel) Crawley of Oceanside, California; and son John (and Susan) Skogstoe of Norfolk, Nebraska; seven grandchildren: Josh (and Suzanne) Roever of Milwaukee, Wisconsin, Katie Roever of Oakland, California, Jason, Adam, and Lauren Crawly of Oceanside, California, and Martin and Aline Skogstoe of Norfolk, Nebraska. He is also survived by his sisters: Pauline Dunlavy of Coleraine, MN, Fern Hjelle and Edna Kallevig both of Willmar, and ten nephews, one niece and other relatives.

Ed was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers and a sister.

Marlyn Peterson, 78, of Willmar, died Saturday, June 28, 2008 at North Memorial Hospital in Robbinsdale. His service of remembrance will be 11 am, Thursday at Harvey Anderson Funeral Home in Willmar. Burial with Military Honors by American Legion Post #167 will be in Cloverleaf Cemetery. Visitation will be from 6-8 pm, Wednesday at the funeral home and continue one hour prior to services at the funeral home.

Marlyn Lee Peterson was born on May 2, 1930, in Willmar, MN, the son of Arthur and Anna (Larson) Peterson. He was baptized and confirmed at Calvary Lutheran Church and attended Willmar Public Schools. He enlisted into the United States Army serving two years before enlisting in the United States Navy, retiring after 20 years of combined service.

On April 23, 1954, he married Janet L. Mohr. They lived in Great Lakes, IL, San Diego, CA, Providence, RI, Norfolk, VA, Yokohama, Japan, and San Francisco, CA. Upon his honorable discharge, they returned to Willmar and he worked for the Willmar Police Department, retiring in 1985 after 17 years. He worked part-time in security at Ridgewater College (Willmar Community College) and Mills Automotive Center. Marlyn was a member of the American Legion.

He enjoyed fishing, playing cards, cribbage and solitaire on the computer. Marlyn was well known in the community and loved by all. He will be missed by his family and friends, who loved him dearly.

Surviving are his wife, Janet; daughters, Deb (and Bob) Norberg of Eden Prairie; Lori (and Brad) Goldenstein of St. Bonifacius; eight grandchildren, Tisha, Laura, Sarah, Nick, Jenny, Chad, Lindsay and Chris; nine great grandchildren, Joe, Allison, Hannah, Ellie, Garret, Isabella, Dylan, Sam and Ian and sister, Shirley Ann Fletcher of Jacksonville, FL.

He was preceded in death by his parents, brother and sister-in-law, Donald and Cathy Peterson and brother-in-law, David Fletcher.

Frances E. Hardebeck, 93, of Willmar, formerly of Raymond, died Sunday, June 22, 2008 at Rice Memorial Hospital. Her Mass of Christian Burial will be Friday, June 27th at 10:30 am at Church of St. Clara in Clara City. Burial will be in Sacred Heart Catholic Cemetery, rural Raymond. Visitation will be Thursday from 5-8 pm with a Parish Prayer service at 7:30 pm at Harvey Anderson Funeral Home in Willmar and continue one hour prior to mass at the church on Friday.

Frances was born on January 11, 1915, in Nobles County, the daughter of Herman and Kunnie (Hartman) Heling. Her family lived in the Wilmont area before moving to Red Lake Falls where she attended her elementary schooling. At the age of 16, her family moved to the Pennock area where worked as a housekeeper. On October 17, 1945, she was united in marriage to George Hardebeck at Church of St. Mary in Willmar. They lived and farmed near Raymond until 1972 when they moved into Raymond. Frances had been active with Chippewa County Homemakers Club and Raymond Senior Citizens. George preceded her in death in 1990. In 1999, Frances moved to Infinia at Willmar.

She was baptized on January 13, 1915 and was a member of Church of St. Clara where she belonged to the choir, Altar Society and taught religious education for 12 years. Her strong faith was evident in her daily devotional of praying the Rosary.

Her family remembers her as a simple and practical woman who enjoyed life and had lots of fun. Frances quilted, crocheted, and tended to large flower and vegetable gardens, canning many of the fruits of her labor. She was a gifted cook and baker, making her famous and desired, German Chocolate cake for many occasions. After moving to Infinia, she enjoyed watching the birds, making crafts and playing bingo.

Surviving are her daughter, Barb Kolbinger of St. Cloud; son-in-law, Gene Hallock of Cleveland, MN; four grandchildren, Dan, Dale and Diane Hallock and Jessica (and Terry) Dieterle; six great grandchildren, Laura, Sarah, Elly, Abby, Zach and Max.

Besides her husband and parents, Frances was preceded in death by her son, Eugene; daughter, Delores Hallock and brothers, Joe, John and Adolph Heling.

Lorraine Thompson, age 81 of the Belgrade and Brooten area, died Wednesday, June 11, 2008 at the St. Cloud Hospital. Funeral services will be 11:00 a.m. Saturday, June 21, 2008 at Big Grove Lutheran Church in rural Belgrade. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Visitation will be 5:00 – 7:00 p.m. Friday at the Johnson Funeral Home in Belgrade and for one hour prior to the services at the church.

Lorraine Thompson was born on July 5, 1926 on the family farm near Bertha, MN, the daughter of Gustav and Louise Drawbert. She graduated from Bertha High School and then St. Cloud Teachers College. She worked at the munitions plant during WWII, and Blue Bell Lodge Resort. Upon completing her schooling, she taught in Staples, MN from 1946 to 1948, when she moved to Madras, Oregon where she taught until 1950. She returned to Minnesota and was united in marriage to Ralph A. Thompson on July 2, 1950 at St. Paul’s Evangelical Lutheran Church in Bertha. She taught in the North Fork Country Schools and Belgrade and Brooten Elementary Schools They made their home in rural Belgrade where they farmed with two sons and a daughter. Together, Lorraine and Ralph were able to share in 50 years of marriage before Ralph’s death on November 16, 2000.

Lorraine was an active member of Big Grove Lutheran Church where she taught Sunday School and served in W.E.L.C.A. She served as a 4-H adult leader and was a member of the North Fork Township Homemakers. She volunteered at the food shelf, as a driver for Lutheran Social Services, helped the local literacy foundation and provided foster care prior to having her own family. She enjoyed reading, writing poetry, playing cards, noon meals and bingo at the Legion, quilting, making dolls and teddy bears and spending time with family. She especially looked forward to family reunions. One of her favorite pastimes was cooking and baking for family, friends, neighbors and church events. Her family recalls her “Grandma cookies”, rhubarb muffins, chocolate cupcakes from scratch and her calico bean casserole as some of her favorites.

Lorraine died on Wednesday, June 11, 2008 at the St. Cloud Hospital at the age of 81. She is survived by children, Loren Thompson and wife Linda (Kemme) of Richfield, Linda Watkins of Champlin, Larry Thompson and wife Paula (Ralston) of Belgrade, grandson, Caleb Watkins and her sister, Dorothy Patterson of California,

Lorraine was preceded in death by husband, Ralph; parents; siblings, Adeline, Art, Albert, and Elmer.

Curtis A. Amundson, 80, of Willmar, died Thursday, June 12, 2008 at Bethesda Pleasantview in Willmar. His funeral will be 2:00 pm, Tuesday at Calvary Lutheran Church in Willmar. Burial will be in Cloverleaf Cemetery. Visitation will be from 5-7 pm Monday at Harvey Anderson Funeral Home in Willmar and continue one hour prior to services at the church on Tuesday.

Curtis was born on January 30, 1928, in Langhei Township, Pope County, Minnesota, the son of Carl and Alma (Aaberg) Amundson. As a young child, the family moved to Benson where he attended school and graduated from Benson High School in 1947. Then he worked for with his father as a carpenter and eventually moved to California for a short time. Upon returning to Benson, he worked some odd jobs and in 1958, he purchased the Lakeland Hotel in Willmar.

On June 27, 1959, he was united in marriage to LaVonne Lohmeyer in Danube. Following their marriage, they lived in Willmar. Curtis owned the hotel until the mid 1960’s is when he sold it and went to work for the West Central Tribune. Sometime later, Curtis began working as a supervisor for West Central Industries, retiring in 2000.

He was baptized on February 26, 1928 and confirmed on June 13, 1943 at East Zion Lutheran Church in Pope County and has been a member of Calvary Lutheran Church in Willmar having served as a deacon.

Curtis enjoyed golfing and was a member of Valley Golf Club. He was always willing to go to a threshing bee, car show and was always ready to go for a drive. Curtis and LaVonne cherished the many trips they were able to take together as well as with their family growing up.

Surviving are his wife, LaVonne of Willmar; son, Kevin (and Kristin) Amundson of Golden, CO; daughter, Nancy Amundson of Willmar and brother-in-law, Lyle Krogstad of DeGraff.

His parents, brothers, preceded him in death Arthur, Willie, Harris and sisters, Violet Krogstad and Deloris Brothen.

Howard Tinnes , 90, of West St. Paul (formerly of Willmar) died Wednesday at Alterra Clare Bridge Cottages in West St. Paul. Funeral service will be 11:00 am, Monday at Calvary Lutheran Church in Willmar. Burial is in the Cloverleaf Cemetery, with military honors provided by VFW Post #1639 and American Legion Post #167. Visitation will be from 4-7:00 pm, Sunday at Harvey Anderson Funeral Home in Willmar and on Monday one hour prior to services at the church.

Howard Tinnes was born May 26, 1918, in Genoa, Colorado, to Edward and Mary (Johnson) Tinnes. The family moved to Bird Island, MN, where he grew up and attended school. Before World War II he worked with the WPA, then for the Milwaukee Railroad in Bird Island. During the war he served in the U. S. Army in Alaska and Europe. After the war, he drove gravel truck, then worked for Great Northern Railroad (later Burlington Northern), and part time for Irv’s Nursery for many years. He married Dana Wicklund and they lived in Willmar, MN. He enjoyed gardening and maintaining their home and yard. He was a member of the VFW and the American Legion. In 2005, he moved to assisted living in St. Paul, then West St. Paul.

He is survived by his daughter Diane Tinnes of Inver Grove Heights; six grandchildren: Darcy (and Ann) Tinnes of St. Paul; Darla (and Paul) Hansen of Minnetonka; Dana (and Jeanne) Breska of Hopkins; James (and Mary) Breska of Waconia; Kathy (and Chris) Svor of Hopkins; and Lori (and Larry) Roland of Prior Lake; 10 great-grandchildren; 2 great-great-grandchildren; one sister Luella Anderson, of Minneapolis, and numerous other relatives.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife; his stepson, Willis Breska; an infant brother; and four sisters: Ethyl Wever, Irene Hocking, Margaret Tinnes, and Mildred Yamauchi.

Clara (Thorpe) Tvete, age 93 of Burnsville formerly of Willmar died on June 10, 2008 at The Rivers Assisted Living Facility in Burnsville, Minnesota. Funeral service will be 11:00 am on Thursday at Calvary Lutheran Church in Willmar. Burial will be at the church cemetery in Willmar. Visitation will be one hour prior to the service at the church on Thursday. Arrangements with Harvey Anderson Funeral Home in Willmar.

Clara (Thorpe) Tvete was born on July 14, 1914, on the Thorpe family farm east of Willmar, the daughter of Carelius and Sina (Urdahl) Thorpe. She was baptized and confirmed at Calvary Lutheran Church in Willmar. Clara grew up on the family farm and attended Golden Rod School through the eighth grade.

Clara was a house keeper for the Henry Sletten family north of Willmar, and later the Ed Larson family of Kandiyohi. Then she went to work at Rice Memorial Hospital in Willmar. Clara was married to Henry Tvete on June 4, 1949. She took time off from working at the hospital to stay at home and raise two children, Sharon and Curtis. After Henry passed away she went back to work, first at Bethesda Heritage Nursing Home and then Rice Memorial Hospital. She worked in the hospital kitchen until she retired at the age of 70 years. Clara then made her hobby more of a full time job. Her life long passion was making quilts. She started making quilts at age 8. She has made many quilts for family and other relatives as well as stitching quilt tops together for many other people. Many of these have gone to several other states, plus won prizes at fairs. She helped stitch many of the quilts made at Calvary and sent to missions. She also used to go to Sunrise Village to help stitch quilts. Clara was forced to stop quilting when her eye sight and fingers were no longer able to do the detailed work. She was a long time member of the Dovre Circle as her mother was before her, and served as treasurer for many years.

Clara died on June 10, 2008 at The Rivers Assisted Living Facility in Burnsville, Minnesota at the age 93. She is survived by her daughter Sharon (and David) Olson of Savage; son Curtis (and Julie) Tvete of Burnsville; seven grandchildren: Kristin, John and Meredith Olson; Justin, Daniel, and Elisa and Amy Tvete; and several nieces, nephews and other relatives.

Clara was preceded in death by her parents, husband, Henry in January of 1971, brothers, Alvin, Carl, Lewis, Selmer; and sister, Emma Thorpe.

Harry L. Johanson, age 72 of New London, died unexpectedly Saturday evening, June 7, 2008 at Rice Memorial Hospital in Willmar. Funeral services are 11:00 AM Thursday, at Peace Lutheran Church in New London. A visitation will be held on Wednesday night from 5-8:00 PM at Johnson Funeral Home in New London and continue one hour prior to the service at the church.

Harry L. Johanson was born on September 23, 1935 in Parker, South Dakota, the son of Howard and Velva (Fritz) Johanson. He grew up in rural Spicer where he attended elementary school and Willmar High School, graduating in 1954.

On Nov 13, 1993, Harry was united in marriage to Karen Nelson in Willmar. They made their home in rural Spicer. Harry has lived in the Spicer area his entire life. At the age of 16 he started working for the railroad and later for the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources in the Fisheries Div. He also worked with Ray Peterson Construction, and drove school bus. Throughout Harry’s life his passion was trapping. He told his family that he started trapping shortly after he took his first steps. He was a member of the Trappers Association where he was active in the mentor program teaching children how to trap safely and humanely.

Harry loved to spend time with his grandchildren and always looked forward to seeing them. Karen will never forget Harry, he treated her like his queen, and no one has ever treated her better.

Harry L. Johanson died unexpectedly on Saturday evening, June 6, 2008 at Rice Memorial Hospital in Willmar at the age of 72. He is survived by his wife Karen, son, Matthew (Marylynn) Johanson; step-daughter, Ricki (John) Bajari; grandchildren, Cody, Chase, Karli, Paige, and Eve; mother, Velva Johanson.

He was preceded in death by his father, Howard.

Kenneth “Pap” Steffen, 87 of Raymond, recently of Benson, died Friday, June 6, 2008 at Swift County-Benson Hospital in Benson. His funeral will be 1:00 pm, Tuesday at the United Methodist Church in Raymond. Burial will be in Fairview Cemetery in Raymond with Military Honors by American Legion Posts of Raymond and Willmar. Visitation will be from 5-7 pm, Monday at Harvey Anderson Funeral Home in Willmar and continue one hour prior to the service on Tuesday.

Kenneth was born on July 10, 1920, in Minneapolis, MN, the son of Albert and Mable (Teeple) Steffen. As a young child, the family moved first to a farm near Grove City and later to Raymond. He attended Raymond schools. He worked in Raymond and St. Paul after school and before enlisting into the United States Army Air Corps on August 26, 1942. He was honorably discharged on November 15, 1945. He returned to Raymond and began working construction.

On June 21, 1950, he was united in marriage to Lenore “Lolly” DuHoux at United Methodist Church in Raymond. They remained in Raymond where Ken continued to worked construction, eventually going into partnership with Buster Hanson. He retired in 1985. Ken was member of the American Legion in Raymond.

Ken was a member of United Methodist in Raymond and very rarely missed a Sunday service and was instrumental in building the parsonage. Ken enjoyed fishing, watching sports on TV and especially bowling. Ken and Lolly also enjoyed the many trips around the country they were able to take.

Surviving are his sons, Mark (and Cindy) Steffen and Merle (and Heather) Steffen both of Benson; four step grandchildren, Amy (and Tim) Ackman, Sabrina (and Preston) Teague, Nicole (and Craig) Artis, Travis (and Dana) Sparks and nine step great grandchildren.

Besides his wife, Lolly, Ken was preceded in death by his parents, three sisters and a brother.

Dolores Lucille Lemke, 95 of Willmar, died Monday, June 2, 2008 at Bethesda Heritage Center in Willmar. Her funeral will be 11:00 am, Saturday, June 7 at Vinje Lutheran Church in Willmar. Burial will be in Cloverleaf Cemetery in Willmar. Visitation will be from 5-7 pm, Friday at Harvey Anderson Funeral Home in Willmar and continue one hour prior to services at the church on Saturday.

Dolores was born on January 29, 1913, in Wisner, Nebraska, she was the daughter of Emil and Celia (Hansen) Benzien. She attended school in Wisner and was a member of St. Paul’s Lutheran Church where she was baptized and confirmed.

On February 26, 1930, she was united in marriage to Leonard Lemke. They lived and worked in Stanton and Beemer before moving to a farm near Wisner. On December 13, 1947, they moved to a farm near Murdock until moving into Willmar in 1967.

While living near Murdock, she was a member of Bethesda-Calvary Lutheran Church and held the offices of President, vice president, and secretary/treasurer of the LCW. She also was a Sunday school superintendant, teacher and Bible schoolteacher. After moving into Willmar, she belonged to Vinje Lutheran Church where she was active with the prayer chain and circle and was a “friendly visitor”. She also volunteered with the Holiday Bazaar for many years.

Dolores volunteered at Rice Hospital as a receptionist in the oncology department and with the blood mobile. She was a member of the Senior Citizens, was an election judge, and with, Arlene Lene, started the first “Homemaker Extension Club” in Swift County.

She is survived by her children, Jacqueline Kremer of Worland, WY; Donald (and Marge) Lemke of Mound; Terry (and Carol) Lemke of Wendover, NV; Sharon Adams of Yuma, AZ; 10 grandchildren, 11 great grandchildren and 5 great, great grandchildren as well as a step grandchildren and great grandchildren.

Her parents, husband, two sisters, a grandson and twin great grandsons preceded her in death.

Vivian C. Berg, 102, of Willmar, died on Sunday June 1, 2008, at Bethesda Pleasantview. Her funeral service will be 11:00 am on Thursday at Vinje Lutheran Church with interment at Cloverleaf cemetery. Friends may call 1 hour prior to services at the church. Arrangements are with Harvey Anderson Funeral Home.

Vivian C (Chapin) was born on June 5, 1905, in Dodge County, Minnesota, the daughter of Theron and Lottie (Knapp) Chapin. She graduated from Dodge Center and continued her education at the University of Minnesota, graduating with a BS. Following her graduation, Vivian taught Home Economics at Mantorville, MN where she meet and was united in marriage to Beal G. Dolven. This union was blessed with two sons. They later moved to Hector and Superior, Wisconsin, where in 1934, he preceded her in death.

Vivian moved to Litchfield and later Willmar where she began working for the Farm Security Administration., USDA and then worked for the Extension Service for Kandiyohi County. She later worked as a Dietician at the Willmar State Hospital where she meet Casper Johnson . In August of 1950, they were united in marriage. Casper preceded her in death in 1968. Vivian returned to teaching Home Economics at the Willmar Jr. High until her retirement .

On May 28, 1976, Vivian was united in marriage to Glen E. Berg. They continued to make Willmar their home. Glen preceded her in death on September 25, 1989.

Vivian was a member of DAR and the Degree of Honor where she held several offices in the local lodge.

She has been a member of Vinje Lutheran Church since 1940 and had served on the Altar Guild and was active with the church circles.

Surviving is her son, Robert (and Nancy) Dolven of Hayesville, NC; seven grandchildren, Barbara Dolven, Bob Dolven, Brett Dolvin, Melissa (and Kevin) Brown, Blaine Dolvin, Blaine Dolvin, Erin Dolvin, Cam (and Wendy) Broderick; granddaughter-in-law, Lynn Dolvin; three step-grandchildren, Mary Frances (and Lt Col Michael) Geeza, Allyson ( and Mitchell) Jordan, William ( and Alison) Busch; eight great grandchildren and six step- great grandchildren.

In addition to her husbands, Vivian was preceded in death by her parents, five brothers; son, B. Gordon Dolven; and grandson Tom Dolven.

George William Strom, age 88, of Willmar died on Tuesday, June 3, 2008 at Rice Care Center in Willmar. Funeral service will be 10:30 am, Saturday at Calvary Lutheran Church in Willmar. Burial will be at Cloverleaf Cemetery in Willmar. Visitation will be one hour prior to the service at the church on Saturday. Arrangements are with Harvey Anderson Funeral Home in Willmar.

George William Strom was born on June 13, 1919, in Danvers, Minnesota, the son of Otto and Hannah (Tommerasen) Strom. He grew up in the Danvers area and attended Benson High School. He moved with his family to Kandiyohi County in 1935, where he farmed with his father. On September 5, 1943, George was united in marriage to Blanche Gunderson at Eagle Lake Lutheran Church in rural Willmar. The couple lived in Willmar. In 1951, George began working for Great Northern Railroad in Willmar and later in Minot, North Dakota. He began working with the Willmar Public Schools in 1962, as a custodian at Garfield and Senior High Schools retiring in 1984.

George was a member Calvary Lutheran Church in Willmar. He also was a member of the Fraternal Order of Eagles Aerie #2334.

He enjoyed hunting, fishing, and was an avid reader. He also helped his brother with towing at Gordy’s Skelly in Willmar. George and Blanche also enjoyed traveling to Alaska, California and Arizona.

George passed away on Tuesday, June 3, 2008, at Rice Care Center in Willmar at the age of 88 years.

He is survived by his wife of 64 years, Blanche of Willmar; son Dennis (and Janet) Strom of Wrangell, Alaska; granddaughters: Nicole Strom, Alyssa (and Phillip) Perry and their children Adeline and Andrew, Dana (and Robert) Ivy and their children Keith and Faith. George is also survived by his brother Gordy (and Muriel) Strom of Willmar and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers: Orvin and Royce and two sisters: Gladys Buskoviak and Hazel Tweten.

Stanley E. Block, age 86 of Spicer, died Monday, June 02, 2008 at Rice Memorial Hospital in Willmar. Services will be 2:00 p.m. Friday, June 6, 2008 at Green Lake Lutheran Church in rural Spicer. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Visitation will be from 4 –8 p.m. Thursday at Blocks Auction Center on Hwy 23, 1 mile south of Spicer, where the visitation will conclude with a 8 p.m. prayers service. Visitation will continue on Friday for one hour prior to the services at the church. Arrangements are with the Johnson Funeral Home in New London.

Stanley Eugene Block was born on June 28, 1921 in Menomonie, WI the son of Albert and Charlotte Jo (McClurg) Block. His family moved to the Spicer area in 1924. He attended country grade school in district #60 and high school at the Morris School of Ag, graduating in 1939. He returned home and purchased his first farm on the south east side of Eagle Lake in 1940. On March 6, 1944, Stan was united in marriage to Muriel Nelson. To this union three sons were born. They made their home in rural Spicer where he farmed, started Turkey Growers Inc. and later owned and operated Agriculture Products Inc. in New London. In his retirement he started Valley Flea Market and his latest venture, Blocks Auction Center, which he had just recently gone to school and received his auctioneer license for. He had also served as a Kandiyohi County Commissioner and Assessor, president of the Turkey Growers Association and on the boards for Land O Lakes, Norbest Turkeys, Midstate Telephone and the Federal Land Bank.

Stan was a member of Green Lake Lutheran Church where he served for 33 years on the church board. He was also an active member of his community where he served in numerous ways including, as a guardian ad litum for children, board member of the Green Lake Township and recipient of the WCCO Good Neighbor Award.

Stan died on Monday morning, June 2, 2008 at Rice Memorial Hospital at the age of 86. He is survived by his wife, Muriel: sons, Tom Block (sp. Friend, Artemis Anderson) of Spicer and Tim (Sue) Block of Spicer; four grandchildren, Chris (Kristy) Block, Ryan (Shelli) Block, Kelli (Matt) Haglund and Jamie Block; seven great-grandchildren; brother Wayne (Shirley) Block of Kandiyohi and numerous nieces and nephews.

Stan was preceded in death by infant son, Paul, parents and brother, Donald.

Lyle R. Soine, 61, of Hawick, died on Friday, May 30, 2008, at his home in rural Hawick. Funeral services will be 11:00 Wednesday at Paynesville Lutheran Church in Paynesville. Burial will be at Fairview Cemetery in Willmar. A visitation will be held on Tuesday from 5-8:00 pm at the Johnson Funeral Home in Paynesville and continue one hour prior to the funeral at the church.

Lyle Raymond Soine was born on October 3, 1946, in Willmar the son of Ralph and Stella (Hanson) Soine. He grew up in Hawick where he attended school at New London elementary and high school. He followed his job moving to Florida, and Kentucky, before moving back home to Minnesota. He worked for the Lamppa’s Construction Company until his later years when he enjoyed working for Richard Pflueger.

Lyle lived to work but did enjoy a few hobbies. He loved to spend his free time gardening where he made great memories with his grandchildren. If he wasn’t at work or in the garden you may find Lyle out fishing with his family. He was truly grateful for the time he was able to spend with his grandchildren.

Lyle R. Soine died on Friday, May 30, 2008 at his home in rural Hawick at the age of 61. He is survived by his son, Jaime of Paynesville and his children, Brandon, Briana, Justin, and Morgan; son, Cory (Amy) of Hawick, and their children Corbin and Cambria; daughter, Angela of Paynesville, and her children, Aaron, Ashley, Austin, Samuel, and Brandi. He is also survived by his brothers, Vernon (Geraldine) of Hawick, Howard (Joyce) of Belgrade, Paul (Jean) of Paynesville, George of Hawick; sisters, Lorraine (Larry) Eickhoff of Kandiyohi, Lois (Carl) Robinson of Loysville, PA, and Jane (Paul) Herem of Hawick; many nieces and nephews.

Lyle was preceded in death by his parents, Ralph and Stella, and brother, Ray.

Marie M. Osmundson 88, of Belgrade, died on Thursday, May 29, 2008, at Paynesville area Hospital. Services are 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, at Trinity Lutheran Church in Brooten. Burial will be in the church cemetery. There will be a visitation one hour prior to the service at the church.

Marie M. Osmundson was born on March 11, 1920 in Williston, North Dakota, the daughter of Albert and Minnie (Dyrdahl) Mundahl. She was baptized on April 11, 1920, and was confirmed into the Christian Faith on July 15, 1934, both at Bethany Lutheran Church in Epping, North Dakota. She attended a small country school and later Epping High School. In 1936 Marie moved to the Twin Cities where she became a certified nurse’s assistant and was employed at Fairview Medical Center.

On May 5, 1979 Marie was united in marriage to Arnold Osmundson in Minneapolis. They lived in Brooten until 2001 when the couple moved to Belgrade. Marie was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church in Brooten. She was active in the Ladies Aid, Circle, Quilting, and at the Food Shelf.

Marie M. Osmundson died on Thursday morning, May 29, 2008, at Paynesville Area Hospital at the age of 88. She is survived by her husband, Arnold of Belgrade, step-children, Stanford (and Joan) Osmundson of Andover, Orval (and Valerie) Osmundson of Inver Grove Heights, Nancy (and Jeffery) Robertson of Hudson, WI, Paul (and Dorothy) Osmundson of Brooten; 8 grandchildren; 5 great-grandchildren; sisters, Ardice Neidt, and Viola Sletten.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Albert and Minnie; and brother, Norris.

Elwin “Al” C. Yule, 91, of Willmar, died on Monday at Rice Care Center. The funeral service will be 2:00 pm on Friday at Mamrelund Lutheran Church in Pennock. Interment will be in the church cemetery. Friends may call on Thursday from 5-7 pm at Harvey Anderson Funeral Home and 1hour prior to services at the church on Friday. Family prefers memorials to Mamrelund Lutheran Church or Willmar Civic Scholarship Association.

Elwin “Al” Charles Yule was born on November 17, 1916, at Ray, North Dakota, the son of George Charles and Lena (Loen) Yule. He grew up in the Ray area and graduated from Fargo High School in 1934. Following graduation Al worked at Scherling Studio in Fargo and later moved to New Hampton, Iowa, where he owned Yule Photography Studio.

On October 27, 1941, Al entered the US Army as a Lithographer. He served in Southern France, Rhineland and Central Europe, being discharged from active duty on November 7, 1945. On September 5, 1953, Al was united in marriage to Frances Berglund at Mamrelund Lutheran Church in Pennock. This union was blessed with three children. Al worked for Twin Cylinder Oil and Minnesota Electric Supply retiring in 1988.

Al was baptized on December 15, 1916 at Ray, North Dakota, and was confirmed at Fargo, North Dakota. He was a member of Mamrelund Lutheran at the time of his death. He served on the church council, ushered, was active with the Brotherhood and was a Sunday School Teacher.

Al was a member of Willmar American Legion Post # 167 and Civil Defense.

Surviving is wife, Frances; children, Gary and (Debbie) Yule, Deb Zinda Hanson (and her husband Dan Hanson), all of Willmar, and Paul Yule and (Sue Dearholt) of Bemidji; seven grandchildren, Spc. Matthew (and Elpha) Yule in Iraq, Michael and Jeffrey Yule, of Willmar, Marc and Grant Zinda, Joseph and Jesse Hanson all of Willmar. Also surviving is his sister, Marcy Melberg of Bemidji.

He was preceded in death by his parents, one brother and one sister.

Robert “Earl’ McLaughlin, 87, of Willmar, died Friday, May 23, 2008 at Rice Memorial Hospital in Willmar. His funeral will be 11:00 am, Wednesday, May 28, 2008 at Hope Presbyterian Church, rural Spicer. Burial will be in Spicer City Cemetery with Military Honors by American Legion Post #545 of Spicer. Visitation will be from 4-7 pm, Tuesday at Harvey Anderson Funeral Home in Willmar and continue one hour prior to service at the church on Wednesday.

Earl was born on June 5, 1920, in Milford, Iowa, the son of Edward L. and Nora A. (Ankeny) McLaughlin. He was baptized on June 14, 1931 at Junior Federated Church in Milford. He grew up in the Milford area and graduated from Okoboji High School in Spirit Lake in 1937. In 1940, his family moved to Poplar, Minnesota. On September 12, 1941, he was united in marriage to Ardith Chapin.

Earl was drafted into the United States Army on September 16, 1942 and graduated from OCS as a 2nd Lieutenant. In February of 1943, he went overseas and served in North Africa, Italy and the Philippines, receiving his 1st Lieutenant commission while in Italy. On June 1, 1945, he was honorably discharged. From 1945 – 1951 he served in the Army Reserve and from 51-64 in the National Guard.

In 1951, Earl and Ardith left Poplar and moved to Spicer. He owned and operated Spicer Transfer Company. He served on the Board of Directors for Kandiyohi County Civil Defense, West Central Industries, New London-Spicer School Board, and Past Commander of Spicer American Legion of where he was a member for over 60 years. He also was a Mason and member of Spicer Lions, Willmar Noon Kiwanis and many other organizations.

On June 18, 1966, he was united in marriage to Elsie (Kleen) Chapin at First Congregational Church in Staples. They continued to live in Spicer until moving to Willmar. Earl was actively involved at Hope Presbyterian Church in Spicer.

Surviving are his wife, Elsie of Willmar; children, Jan (and Darrell) Anderson of Bloomington; Charlotte Chapin 0f St. Louis Park; Donna (and Carroll) Sarsland of New London; Patsy Parkin (and Ray Valandra) of Rapid City, SD; Charles (and Annastasia) Chapin of Willmar; Karen (and Lloyd) Hagemeier of St. Cloud; Steven (and Corrine) Chapin of Waikoloa, HI; and daughter-in-law, Vicky Chapin of Spicer; 22 grandchildren, David Anderson, Kay Disrud, Corrina Sarsland, Carmen Macik, Cody and Colleen Sarsland, Kerry Velaquez, Howard Parkin, Kursten Hodgin, Ben, Jesse and Laura Chapin, Minda Henjum, Tige Sluka, Andrea Dolan, Jenna and Joshua Chapin, Terry, James and Andrew McLaughlin, Carrie Dupre and Eric Stockland and 24 great grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents, first wife, Ardith; sisters, Katherine Hildebrand, Martha Shequin; son, Dean McLaughlin and son,Lenny Chapin.

 


LeVina G. Lien, age 94 of Belgrade, died Wednesday, May 21, 2008 at Glacial Ridge Hospital in Glenwood. Funeral services will be 2:00 p.m. Tuesday, May 27, 2008 at Big Grove Lutheran Church in rural Belgrade. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Visitation will be held one hour prior to the services at the church. Arrangements are with the Johnson Funeral Home in Belgrade.

LeVina Gladys Lien was born on Feb 26, 1914 on the family farm near Brooten, the daughter of Henry and Bergine (Thompson) Halvorson. She was baptized in March of 1914 and confirmed in 1927 both at Big Grove Lutheran Church. She grew up on the family farm near Brooten and attended school in the area. On Dec 17, 1931, LeVina was united in marriage to Boyd Lien in Big Grove Lutheran Church. To this union two sons and a daughter were born. They made their home and farmed near Brooten until their retirement in 1981, when they moved into Brooten. Together, they were able to share in 64 years of marriage before Boyd’s death in Sept of 1996. LeVina continued to live at their home in Brooten until 2000, when she moved to an apartment in Brooten and the Belgrade Nursing Home in 2002.

LeVina was a member of Big Grove Lutheran Church, where she was active in W.E.L.C.A., Altar Guild, quilting for missions, serving as a Sunday school teacher and attending many Bible studies. She enjoyed gardening, growing flowers, quilting, children and baking. Her life revolved around her church and family, especially her grandchildren, always making sure there were baked treats for them when visiting and making many quilts for them through the years.

LeVina is survived by her children, DeWayne (Bonnie) Lien of Belgrade, Donna (Milton) Kroschel of Dellwood and Dale (Connie) Lien of Eden Prairie; 9 grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; 2 great-great-grandchildren; siblings, Helen Anderson of Minneapolis, LeRoy Halvorson of Ramsey and Doris Jensen of New London; and sister-in-law, Gladys Hellickson of Belgrade.

LeVina was preceded in death by husband, Boyd; parents and siblings, Howard, Reuben, Ruth, Myrtle, Merle, Viola, and Bernice.

Henry P. Sunde 102, of Paynesville died on Saturday May 17, 2008 at Koronis Manor in Paynesville. Services will be on Thursday at 1:30 PM at Nordland Lutheran Church in rural Hawick. Burial will be at the church cemetery. A visitation will be held from 4-8:00 PM at the Johnson Funeral Home in Paynesville on Wednesday, and continue one hour prior to the service at the church.

Henry Palmer Sunde was born on the family farm in Roseville Township, rural Kandiyohi County, on April 26, 1906, the ninth of ten children born to Edvard and Kari Sunde. He was a lifelong member of Nordland Lutheran Church, rural Paynesville.  He attended school through eighth grade at District 97.

Henry loved farming and was engaged in it for over 60 years. He farmed with his older brother John until John’s death in 1969. Henry milked cows until 1970 and continued crop farming until the mid-1980s.

On June 1, 1974, at the age of 68, Henry married for the first time to Edna (Pemble) McLouth at Hawick Methodist Church. Henry moved to Hawick and he and Edna enjoyed nearly 29 years of marriage until Edna’s death in March 2003.

After he retired from farming in the 80s, he helped Edna with her candle business, cut blocks for quilts which Nordland women made into mission quilts, cut rags into strips and then rolled them into balls to make into rugs which were also given away, and he learned to cross-stitch and began stitching beautiful quilts which were donated to community causes, primarily to the Nordland Mission Fest Henry sang in the Nordland choir and in a men’s quartet, mowed the lawns and cemetery at Nordland, and was treasurer of Roseville Township for several years.

Henry and Edna moved from their home in Hawick to 700 Stearns Place in Paynesville in 1994. Henry lived at Washburne Court from 2004 until he entered Koronis Manor in December 2006. He died at the Koronis Manor on Saturday, May 17, 2008, after celebrating his 102nd birthday just three weeks earlier.

Henry is survived by 14 nieces and nephews and numerous great nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; wife Edna; nine brothers and sisters, Conrad, John, Jenny, George, Emma, Stella, Clara, Ruby, and Esther; and one nephew.

Maureen Holmberg, 66, of Willmar, died on Monday at Abbott Northwestern Hospital in Minneapolis. A memorial service will be 11:00 am Friday at Calvary Lutheran Church with private family interment in the church cemetery. Friends may call on Thursday from 5:30 to 7:30 pm at Harvey Anderson Funeral Home. There will be no visitation time on Friday prior to services at the church.

Maureen Mae (Maier) was born on February 24, 1942, at Edgeley, North Dakota, the daughter of Jack and Mae (Bollinger) Maier. She grew up in Albion Township, Dickey County, North Dakota where she attended Albion District # 17 for her elementary schooling. Maureen graduated from Ellendale, North Dakota High School in 1960. She continued her education at the University of North Dakota - Ellendale graduating in 1965, and graduated from Northern State College, Aberdeen, South Dakota in 1968, with a Masters of Science in Business Education. Maureen completed all necessary coursework for her PhD in 1976, from the University of Minnesota.

On August 8, 1964, Maureen was united in marriage to Dennis Ackerson at Ellendale, North Dakota; he preceded her in death on February 26, 1966. On June 11, 1976, she was united in marriage to Bruce Holmberg at Calvary Lutheran Church in Willmar. This union was blessed with two daughters. Maureen taught in Kerkhoven, Benson and later Silverton, Oregon. She also taught business at Willmar Area Vocational Technical Institute and Ridgewater College, retiring in 2001, after 35 years of teaching.

She was a member of several professional education associations and also had served as a 4-H leader.

Maureen was baptized on May 3, 1942 at Albion Lutheran Church and was confirmed on March 25, 1956 at Zion Lutheran Church, Ellendale, North Dakota and was a member of Calvary Lutheran in Willmar at the time of her death. She volunteered for a variety of duties and committees at church including the Calvary Lutheran Cookbook committee.

Surviving are her husband, Bruce; daughters Taeja (and Andy) Klukas, Maple Grove, and Heidi Holmberg, Shakopee; three grandchildren, Joshua, Josie and Quinn Klukas. Also surviving are her siblings, Jackie Maier, Saskatoon, Saskatchewan, Tom (and Lorelei) Maier, Ellendale, ND, Karol (and Mark) Reddig, Dunn Center, ND and Sherry (and Joe) Maly, Ellendale, ND; and several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents and brother, Jim Maier.

Eleanore D. Clark 80, of New London, died on Wednesday, May 14, 2008, at her home. Funeral services will be 2:00 p.m. Tuesday, at Peace Lutheran Church in New London. Burial will be at Oak Hill Cemetery in New London. A visitation will be held on Monday, from 5-8:00 p.m. at the Johnson Funeral Home in New London, and continue one hour prior to the service at the church.

Eleanore Darlene Corneliuson was born on August 26, 1927, on the family farm near Georgeville, the daughter of Conrad and Margaretha (Fredrick) Corneliuson. She received her education at the country grade school in Georgeville. Eleanore was baptized and confirmed at Crow River Lutheran Church in rural Belgrade. On April 24, 1946, she was united in marriage to Robert Clark in Willmar. The union was blessed with four children. They made their home north east of New London where Eleanore and Bob farmed. Along with farming Eleanore worked for Jahnkes, GlenOaks, Country Inn, Walnut Chalet, and for Stan Block just to name a few. Bob died on April 14, 2006, together they shared in 59 years of marriage.

Eleanore was a member of Peace Lutheran Church in New London where she was active in the Rebecca circle. She was also a member of the American Legion Auxiliary at the Robert Ihlang Post #537 in New London. Eleanore enjoyed life, she had many hobbies including crocheting, fishing, baking, cooking, camping, and playing cards. Her family has many great memories of her but will always remember that she loved to play pranks on others, and that the coffee was always on and everyone was welcome.

Eleanore died on Wednesday, May 14, 2008, at her home in New London at the age of 80. She is survived by her daughter, Diane (Dennis) Hanson of Globe, AZ, son, Roger (Cindy) Clark of New London, the twins, Becky (Jeff) Rosengren of Belgrade and Rick (Tracy) Clark of New London; grandchildren, Denise, Jason, Andrew, Kari, Kyle, Kelsey, Aleah, and Ryane; step-grandsons, Tom and Casey; 5 great grandchildren; 3 step-great grandchildren; 2 step-great-great granddaughters. Eleanore is also survived by her sisters, Lena Hagen of Atwater, Edna (Curtis) Hagen of Kerkhoven, and Doris Kastel of Wenatchee, WA; sister-in-law Arlene Corneliuson of WA.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Robert: parents, Conrad and Margaretha; brothers, Kenneth, and Arnold; and sisters Letha and Della.

Peter Freiborg, 81, of Clara City died May 16 at the Renville Care Center. The funeral service will be at 1:30 Tuesday at the Bethany Reformed Church in Clara City. Burial will be the Bethany Reformed Church Cemetery. Visitation is Monday evening from 5 – 8pm at the Harvey Anderson Funeral Home in Clara City, and at the church one hour prior to the service.

Pete was born in rural Renville on August 26, 1926 to Herman and Grace (Brummer) Freiborg. He attended country schools near Renville and Sacred Heart. In 1946 - 47 he served in the United States Army Air Corp, until his honorable discharge when he returned to his family’s farm. He married Pauline Grussing on September 22, 1950, and they farmed near Sacred Heart.

In 1988 they moved to Clara City, but Pete enjoyed helping his sons on the farm for many years.

He Served on the Sacred Heart School Board for 15 years and was a member of the Bethany Reformed Church, where over the years he served on various committees, and was a deacon and an elder.

Pete was an honorable, Godly man who found his greatest joy in the time he spent with his family. He was an avid gardener. He also enjoyed building furniture for his family, traveling, and spending time at their lake home on Lake Florida.

He is survived by his wife; children: Marvin (and Deb) Freiborg of Sauk Centre, Mary (and David) Honken of Blomkest, Dan (and Rhonda) Freiborg of Sacred Heart, Julie (and Scott) Abbas of Renville, Randy (and Stephanie) Freiborg of Sacred Heart, 16 grandchildren, and 4 great grandchildren. He is also survived by his sisters: Annie Grussing, Grace Carlson, and Edith Gerdes of Willmar, and a brother Ben (and Dorothy) Freiborg of California.

He was preceded in death by his parents, his sister Florence Haaman, and 2 grandchildren: Robbie and Sheri Freiborg.

Arlo J. Gordon, age 66 of Willmar formerly of Murdock died on Monday, May 12, 2008 following a traffic accident in Willmar. Memorial service will be 10:30am on Thursday at Kerkhoven Lutheran Church in Kerkhoven. Burial will be at Hillside Cemetery in Kerkhoven. Visitation will be from 5-8pm on Wednesday at Harvey Anderson Funeral Home in Willmar and will also be one hour prior to the service at the church in Kerkhoven on Thursday.

Arlo Joel Gordon was born on March 6, 1942 in Willmar, Minnesota, the son of Arthur and Helen (Enger) Gordon. He grew up in Kerkhoven and graduated from Kerkhoven High School in the class of 1960. Arlo then attended college at Concordia College in Moorhead where he graduated in 1964. Arlo was united in marriage in 1960 to which he was blessed with four children. The couple lived in North Dakota, where Arlo worked for International. In 1968 the couple moved to Murdock and farmed with his father. They later formed Gordon Farms Inc.

Arlo was baptized and confirmed at Kerkhoven Lutheran Church in Kerkhoven. He served on the Murdock school board, was a board member of the Southern Minnesota Beet Sugar Cooperative and also served as the Board Chairman.

He enjoyed spending time with his family and friends. He also was an avid fan of dirt track racing, and enjoyed hunting and fishing. Riding across the country on his motorcycle.

Arlo is survived by his children: Adrian (and Charlene) Gordon of Murdock, Martha Paulson (and Dale Strommen) of Pennock, Rebecca (and Reid) Carlson of Glenwood, Brian (and Pam) Gordon of Murdock; ten grandchildren; and sister Sharon (and Gary) Olson of Woodbridge, Virginia. He is also survived by his special friend Annie Heimdahl of Alexandria.

Arlo was preceded in death by his parents.

Maxine Gravley, age 82 of New London, died Sunday, May 11, 2008 at her home in New London. Funeral services will be 11:00 a.m. Wednesday, May 14, 2008 at Peace Lutheran Church in New London. Burial will be in Oak Hill Cemetery. Visitation will be Tuesday from 5:00 – 8:00 p.m. at the Johnson Funeral Home in New London and for one hour prior to the services at the church.

Maxine Mary Gravley was born on August 23, 1925 in Jeffers, the daughter of Herman and Ethel (McCartney) Schopper. She grew up in Jeffers and later Brooten, where she attended elementary and high school. On June 5, 1945, Maxine was united in marriage to James Rooney at St. Donatus Catholic Church in Brooten. To this union four daughters and one son were born. They made their home in the area where Maxine worked as a homemaker. Together, they were able to share in 24 years of marriage before James’ death on April 11, 1971.

On July 22, 1972, Maxine was united in marriage to Wilbert “Bud” Gravley in Sauk Centre. They made their home in New London where she worked as a nurses aid and kitchen aid at Glen Oaks Care Center. Together they were able to share in 35 years of marriage.

Maxine was a member of Peace Lutheran Church. She enjoyed crafts, dancing, making angels, gardening, painting, traveling and spoiling her dog, Angel.

Maxine died on Sunday morning, May 11, 2008 at her home in New London. She is survived by her husband, Bud; daughters, Diane (Dennis) Rupp of New London, Faye (Jim) Vogt of Ft. Myers, FL; son, Gayland (Diane) Rooney of Hawick; 8 grandchildren; 8 great-grandchildren; 5 step-grandchildren and 9 step-great-grandchildren.

Maxine was preceded in death by her first husband, James; daughters, Laurel Iverson in 2005 and Valorie Rooney in infancy; and brother, Harlan Schopper.

Palmer G. Everson, age 76 of New London, died Thursday, May 08, 2008 at the Paynesville Area Hospital. Funeral services will be 2:00 p.m. Tuesday, May 13, 2008 at Zion Irving Lutheran Church in Rural Hawick. Burial will be in the Church cemetery. Visitation will be Monday from 5:00 to 8:00 p.m. at the Johnson Funeral Home in Paynesville and for one hour prior to the services at the church.

Palmer Gayle Everson was born on April 13, 1932 in Hawick, the son of John and Laura (Thorson) Everson. He grew up in Hawick where he attended grade school and Paynesville High School, graduating in 1950. On June 23, 1950 he entered the United State Navy where he served his country during the Korean Conflict. He was honorably discharged on June 12, 1956 and returned home. On December 29, 1956, Palmer was united in marriage to Alice Lemke at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Albany. Together they raised two sons and two daughters. They made their home just south of Hawick where he owned and operated Hawick Blacksmith and Welding. They moved to New London in 1982 and he retired in 2005 due to his health. Together, Palmer and Alice were able to share in 51 years of marriage.

Palmer was a kind man who enjoyed helping others and meeting new people. He enjoyed playing bingo, visiting and spending time with family and friends and traveling with Alice. He especially enjoyed his work with his late father and son, Larry, seeing his grandchildren and visits from his nephew, Jeff.

Palmer died on Thursday, May 8, 2008 at the Paynesville Area Hospital at the age of 76. He is survived by his wife, Alice; children, Larry (Doreen) Everson of Paynesville, Susan Duus of New London, Roxanne Van Zee of Redwood; eight grandchildren; sisters, Luvern (George) Blair of Lowry and Beatrice Visser of Willmar and brother-in-law, Charles Weber of Hawick.

Palmer was preceded in death by his son, Daniel; parents and four sisters.

Robert D. "Bobby" Ellingson 63, of Willmar, died on Thursday at Rice Memorial Hospital. Mass of Christian Burial will be 10:30 am Wednesday at Church of St. Mary in Willmar with interment in Benson City Cemetery There will be a prayer service 4:30 pm on Tuesday with a visitation to follow from 5 until 7 pm at Harvey Anderson Funeral Home in Willmar. Visitation will continue on Wednesday 1 hour prior to services at the church. Robert Dean "Bobby" Ellingson was born July 25, 1944, in Benson, Minnesota, the son on David M. and Thelma (Anderson) Ellingson. He grew up in Benson where he attended his schooling.

On March 6, 1971, Bobby was united in marriage to Judith (Kurkosky) at the Church of St. Mary in Willmar. This union was blessed with three daughters. Bobby worked for over 20 years at Jennie - O - Foods and later at Toro, continuing his employment at Wal-Mart working there for 18 years as an assembler retiring in 2007.

He was baptized and confirmed at Our Redeemers Lutheran Church in Benson. Following their marriage, Bobby worshiped at St. Mary's in Willmar.

Surviving is his wife Judi; daughters, Suzanne (and David) Christenson, Lisa (and Daniel) Tyson and Dawn Ellingson all of Willmar; five grandchildren, Bobby Christenson, Brandon Christenson, Corey Christenson, Shayne Medellin/Tyson and Alicia Padilla/Tyson. Also surviving is his mother and step- father, Thelma (and Roland) Preuss of Benson; sisters and brother, Sharon (and Richard) Capes, Kimball, Darlene Hagen, Boise, ID, and Donald ( Janet) Ellingson, New London and his nieces, nephews and other family and friends.

He was preceded in death by his father, David Ellingson; two sisters, Ruby Solberg Sampson and Louise Mattheisan and one niece.

Lorraine Haas, age 89 of Clara City died on Tuesday, May 06, 2008 at Rice Memorial Hospital in Willmar . Lorraine Alice Haas was born on March 19, 1919 in Campbell , Minnesota , the daughter of Siebe and Rena (Waldecker) Wilts. She moved with her family to the Murdock area where she attended Chippewa Co. Dist. 32 and Swift Co. Dist. 33 schools.

Lorraine was united in marriage to Mathew Haas on June 10, 1946 at St. Clara’s Catholic Church in Clara City . The couple lived in Clara City where Lorraine worked as a waitress and at the Clara City Care Center as a House Keeper. She retired in 1981.

After Matthew’s death on September 15, 1982 she continued to live in Clara City .

Lorraine was a member of St. Clara’s Catholic where she was active in CCW and Mission Circle . She was also a member of Clara City Legion Auxiliary and a card club.

Lorraine enjoyed reading, playing cards, and spending time with her family and grandchildren. She also enjoyed traveling, and took many trips with her sister Leona.

Lorraine is survived by her children: Barb (and Robert) Shinnick of New London, Donna (and Allen) Leese of Maynard, Pat (and Gary) Stutelberg of Clara City, Mark (Becky) Haas of Raymond, 12 grandchildren, and 9 great-grandchildren. She is also survived by her sister Leona McGinty of Washington , and several nieces, nephews and other relatives.

In addition to her husband, Lorraine was preceded in death by her parents; son David; great-grandson Hunter; and son-in-law Les Jaenisch.

Leola Sweep, 94, of Willmar, died Tuesday, May 6, 2008 at Rice Memorial Hospital in Willmar. Her funeral will be 1:00 pm, Tuesday, May 13, 2008 at Assembly of God in Willmar. Burial will be in Fairview Cemetery in Willmar. Visitation will be from 5-7 pm, Monday at Harvey Anderson Funeral Home in Willmar and continue one hour prior to the service at the church. Memorials preferred in lieu of flowers.

Leola Violet was born on January 4, 1914, in Kandiyohi County, MN, the daughter of Cornelius “Neal” and Kathryn (Van Akkeren) Bauman, near Raymond. She grew up on the farm, and attended a country school. During her lifetime, Leola resided in Clara City, Raymond, Prinsburg and Willmar areas as well as the state of Washington and Council Bluffs, Nebraska.

On September 23, 1932, Leola was married to Henry Sweep, Jr. In 1934, prior to WW II, they moved to the sate of Washington where they lived in Lynden, and in Oak Harbor on Puget Sound. In 1942, the family returned to Minnesota and resided in Clara City, and the rural Clara City area. For many years, Leola was a member of Bethany Reformed Church, and sand in the Bethany Choir.

Leola was the mother of five children, was a homemaker; she enjoyed gardening and sewing. She worked for a number of years at the Variety Supply Company in Clara City, and while living in Omaha, Nebraska was employed at JCPenney Company.

She became involved in mission work, and assisted in whatever capacity she could be used as she accompanied her husband, Henry, whenever they volunteered their services to the Wycliffe Translators Construction Branch in Mexico, and the Philippines. For several years, they also worked with the Indian school in Tempe, AZ and a Mission school in Anville, KY. They also took many pleasure trips throughout the US and abroad.

In 1991, she and her husband, Henry, moved to Willmar where they had previously become members of the Willmar Assembly of God, and were actively involved in volunteer service at the Assembly; they went on a mission to Paraguay through the Assembly. Leola was a participant in the sewing group at the Assembly and volunteered at Bibles for Missions Thrift Store.

Surviving are three sons, LuVerne (Bud) Sweep of Monticello; Darryl Sweep of Big Lake; Duane Sweep of Clara City; two daughters, Ainez (and Dale) Hayunga of Cushing and Sharon Sweep-Ogawa of Willmar. Also surviving are 15 grandchildren, 27 great grandchildren and 15 great-great grandchildren. She has a surviving sister, Marion Standring of Big Lake; 33 nieces and nephews and sisters/brothers-in-law, Virginia Olson, Alvin, Theodore and Verlin Sweep and Gordon Jerve.

She was preceded in death by an infant son, her parents, her brother, five sisters, Henry her husband of 61 years in December of 1993, son-in-law, George Ogawa in June of 2000 and daughter-in-law, Elaine in December of 2000.


Allan Junkermeier, 79, of Lake Lillian, died Sunday, May 4, 2008 at Rice Memorial Hospital in Willmar. His funeral will be at 11:00 am, Thursday, May 8. 2008 at Rosendale Methodist Church, rural Atwater. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Visitation will be from 6-8 pm, Wednesday at Harvey Anderson Funeral Home with a prayer service at 8:00 pm. Visitation will continue one hour prior to service at the church on Thursday. Allan Dean was born on February 28, 1929, in Granite Falls, Minnesota, the son of Alvin and Evelyn (Olson) Junkermeier. As a young child, the family moved to the Lake Lillian/Atwater area where they farmed. Allan graduated from Atwater High School in 1946 and continued his education at Augsburg College. He was united in marriage to Betty Mae Berg on December 21, 1949 at the Calvary Lutheran Church parsonage in Willmar.

Allan started farming with his father and purchased the farm in 1957. He actively farmed with his son, Stacy, until his death. Allan spent his entire life on the farm caring for his family. He enjoyed being with family and friends, especially being with his grandchildren and great-grandchildren, who were his pride and joy. Allan also enjoyed meeting his friends for cards each morning. Allan served as the Lake Elizabeth Township clerk for 39 years. He was also a surveyor fro ASC, State Fire Marshall and served for nine years on the Atwater School Board, including a term as chair. He was a dedicated Mason belonging to Orion Lodge #138 in Atwater.

Surviving are his wife, Betty; four children and 12 grandchildren, son, Ken Junkermeier of Scottsdale, AZ and children, Melissa and Michelle; daughter, Nancy (and Steve) Norbie of Willmar and children, Amy (and Dale) Keys, Luke (and Jenny) Norbie, Ann (and Bob) Poe; son, Jeff Junkermeier of Minnetonka and children, Jen, Katie, Becky and Jesse; son, Stacy (and Kim) Junkermeier of Lake Lillian and children, Jordan, Zach and Sutton; seven great grandchildren, Hannah, Hayley and Caleb Keys, Kaiya Norbie, Alison, Samantha and Bobby Poe. Also surviving are brothers, George (and Ruth) Junkermeier of Willmar; Larry (and Lynn) Junkermeier of White Bear Lake.

He was preceded in death by his parents, and brother, James.

Douglas C. Grund, 84, of New London, died peacefully on Thursday afternoon, May 1, 2008, at Rice Memorial Hospital in Willmar. A memorial service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, May 10, 2008 at Peace Lutheran Church in New London. A private burial will be held after the service. A gathering of friends and family will be held on Friday, May 9, 2008 from 5-8:00 p.m. at the Johnson Funeral Home in New London, and continue one hour prior to the services at the church.

Douglas Clyde Grund was born in Boise, Idaho on October 10, 1923 to John and Marie (Siggerud) Grund. He spent his early years in Van Buren, Arkansas and Coffeyville, Kansas. The family moved to northern Minnesota, where he attended and graduated from Virginia High School in 1941. As a World War II Veteran, he served with the 45th Thunderbird Division in France. Upon his honorable discharge he returned to Minnesota and attended St. Cloud State University, where he earned B.A. and M.S. degrees. On August 4, 1951 Doug was united in marriage to Genell Bagne in Glenwood. To this union five children were born. They made their home in New London where he was a teacher and guidance counselor in New London Schools for 36 years. He was a member of Peace Lutheran Church and a past member of the church council.

He is survived by his wife, Genell; children, Michael Grund of Lakeville, Jennifer (Daniel) Carrigan of Concord, CA, and David (Janet) Grund of Altus, OK. He was a proud to be a grandpa to Alyssa, Shea, and Kelsey Carrigan, Kristen, Aaron, and Eric Grund. He is also survived by his brother, Edmund (Dolly) Grund of West St. Paul.

He was preceded in death by his son, James; infant daughter, Susan; and parents, John and Marie Grund.

Doug will be remembered as an avid reader, builder of cabins, traveler, golfer, Minnesota sports fan, history buff, good listener and friend, life long democrat, loving husband and father and dedicated teacher.


Louise E. Kaack, 97, of Belgrade died Sunday night, May 4, 2008, at Glacial Ridge Hospital in Glenwood. Funeral services will be 11:00 a.m. Thursday, May 8, 2008 at Grace Lutheran Church in Belgrade. Louise “Liz” Emma Kaack was born on December 7, 1910 on the family farm in Colfax Township, the daughter of Henry and Ida (Glauvitz) Kaack. She was baptized and confirmed in Emmanuel Lutheran Church. She grew up on the family farm and attended country school. In 1977 she moved with her brothers into Belgrade, where she continued to work as a homemaker and help out neighbors and friends from time to time. She enjoyed reading, gardening, flowers, crocheting, quilting and houseplants.

Louise died on Sunday evening, May 4, 2008 at the Glacial Ridge Hospital in Glenwood at the age of 97. She is survived by her daughter, Myra (Werner) Reining of Spicer; sister Viola Helmstetter of Belgrade; brother, Detlef Kaack of Belgrade; grandchildren, Robert (Mary) Reining of Delano, Michele Baker of Moline, IL, Nancy Reining of Plymouth; two great-grandchildren, Jennifer and Brian Baker of Moline, IL; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Louise was preceded in death by sisters, Lena Jensen, Laura Johnson, Elsie Raveling and Annie Kaack, in infancy and brothers, Oscar and Arnold Kaack.

James E. Essendrup Sr. age 78 of Clara City , died on Friday, May 2, 2008 at the Clara City Care Center in Clara City . Service will be 10:30 am on Tuesday at St. Clara’s Catholic Church in Clara City . Burial will be at the Church Cemetery . Visitation will be from 5-8pm on Monday at Harvey Anderson Clara City Funeral Home and continue one hour prior to the service at the church on Tuesday.

James Edward Essendrup was born on May 17, 1929 in DeGraff, the son of Raymond and Pearl (Christianson) Essendrup. The family moved to a farm in Raymond where James attended District 48 elementary school. He worked on the family farm. On October 11, 1958 he was united in marriage to Margaret Schroeder at the Raymond Catholic Church. The couple lived on a farm in Raymond. In 1976 they moved to Raymond. James worked for Burlington Northern Railroad and later worked in construction. In 1998 they moved into Clara City .

James was baptized and confirmed in the Catholic Faith. He was a member of St. Clara’s Catholic Church in Clara City.

He enjoyed gardening, playing cards, sewing and wood working. He would often make things for the grandchildren or fix things that where broken. James’ family remembers him tinkering in the garage, playing hand held video games and watching “Wheel of Fortune.”

James died on Friday, May 2, 2008 at the Clara City Care Center. He is survived by his wife Margaret; children: Lori (and Gary) Kruger, Cindy (and Mark) Plowman, James Jr. (and LeAnn) Essendrup all of Clara City; seven grandchildren: Jessica Hirman, Baylee, Cory and Nicole Kruger; Tyler Plowman and Riley and Morgan Essendrup; great-grandson Damien Hirman; brothers: Jerry Essendrup of Willmar; Marlin Essendrup of Michigan, Ervin (and Alice) Essendrup of Willmar, Ray Jr. (and Eileen) Essendrup of Hamel; sisters: Colleen Newland of Eden Prairie, Bonnie (and Dale) Hanson of Willmar, Verna (and Richard) Aeikens of Clara City, Dorothy (and Bob) Fransen of Willmar, Adeline Steffens of Minnetonka, Arlene Beers of Hopkins, and Lorraine Bohlsen of Willmar. James is also survived by numerous nieces and nephews and other relatives.

He was preceded in death by his parents; son Lee; grandsons, Joseph and Travis, and infant twin brothers.

Phyllis Thielke, 85 of Willmar, died on Tuesday at Infinia at Willmar. Memorial services will be 11:00 am on Friday at Redeemer Lutheran Church with interment at Cloverleaf Cemetery. Phyllis Mae (Weiss) was born on February 4, 1923, at Sleepy Eye, Minnesota, the daughter of Michael and Helen (Kuelbs) Weiss. Their family moved to rural Grove City where Phyllis attended Crow River District School.

On March 12, 1949, Phyllis was united in marriage to William Thielke at Redeemer Lutheran Church in Willmar. Following their marriage they lived in South St. Paul, Omaha, NE, Madison, MN and Preston, where Phyllis was the bookkeeper for Bill’s Television shop. In November 1979 they moved to Kandiyohi and later to Willmar.

Phyllis was baptized in Sleepy Eye and confirmed in South St. Paul and was a member of Redeemer Lutheran in Willmar at the time of her death.

Her family recalls how organized Phyllis was. She loved to read and was always busy around the house.

Surviving is her loving husband of 59 years, William; brother, Dennis (and Eileen) Weiss of Inver Grove Heights Also surviving are her nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in by her parents; brother, Marvin and sister, Marcella.

Jackson Wright Pflipsen, infant son of Dustin and Kendra Pflipsen of New London, died April 22, 2008 at Rice Memorial Hospital in Willmar. Jackson Wright Pflipsen was born on April 22, 2008 at Rice Memorial Hospital in Willmar. The son of Dustin and Kendra (Roth) Pflipsen. He is also survived by his brothers, Coltin and Riley; grandparents, Lowell and Tedda Roth of Miltona and Terry and Diane Pflipsen of Avon; great-grandmother, Alice Pflipsen of Avon; aunt Ember and Randy Tamm of Avon; uncles, David and Amy Roth of Miltona, Brad and Sherry Roth of St. Cloud and Steven Roth of Golden Valley; and numerous cousins.

Donovan Torbenson, age 85 of Paynesville, died Wednesday afternoon, April 23, 2008 at his home in Paynesville. Funeral services will be 11:00 a.m. Saturday, April 26, 2008 at Paynesville Lutheran Church in Paynesville. Burial will be in Paynesville Cemetery. Donovan Ardmore Torbenson was born on Sept. 3, 1922 on the family farm near Enderlin, N.D., the son of Oscar and Marie (Syverson) Torbenson. He was baptized and confirmed at Fillmore Lutheran Church. He grew up in Moore Township and attended country grade school and Enderlin High School, graduating in 1940. After his schooling he farmed with his father and brother, before enlisting in the Army Signal Corps in 1942. He served his country during WWII in the China, Burma, India and Pacific Theater before his honorable discharge on March 3, 1946.

Donovan continued his education at U.N.D. in the fall of 1946 and completed a B.S. in 1950 and a Masters in Ed. Administration in 1953, while working as a radio engineer. On July 25, 1947, Donovan was united in marriage to Gladys Lambert. To this union two sons and a daughter were born. They made their home in Drake, ND, Ulen, MN, Adrian and Paynesville, where he was a teacher, high school principal and Supt. of Schools during his 31-year career in education. He retired in 1981 as Supt. of Paynesville Schools and returned to his roots in agriculture and farming the land he loved so much. He developed and operated an irrigated fruit and vegetable farm near Hawick for eight years and a larger farm near Belgrade.

Don and Gladys traveled extensively throughout the world and the U.S. while being active members of the community. He was a member of the Paynesville Lions, Hospital Board and Foundation, Paynesville Historical Society Board, American Legion and Masonic Lodge. He was instrumental in building the Paynesville Area Center and organized the Paynesville Area Charity Fund, also serving on both boards.

Don died on Wednesday, April 23, 2008 at his home in Paynesville at the age of 85. He is survived by wife, Gladys; children, Richard (Darlene) Torbenson of East Amherst, NY, Renee (Pat) Waddick of Minneapolis, and Kevin (Lorrie) Torbenson of Mankato; six grandsons and great-grandson Doran Torbenson

Don was preceded in death by parents; siblings, Osmond, Richard, Cora and Mildred; and nephews, Ronald Torbenson and Arnold Petrich Jr.

Brady Gilb, 19, of Willmar. died Wednesday at St. Cloud Hospital in St. Cloud. A service will be 11:00 am, Monday at Church of St. Mary in Willmar. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Visitation will be Sunday from 4-7 pm at Harvey Anderson Funeral Home in Willmar with a prayer service at 3:30 pm and continue one-hour prior service at the church on Monday. Brady was born on January 1, 1989, in Willmar, MN, the son of Todd and Julie (Wendorff) Gilb. He grew up in Willmar and attended Willmar Public Schools graduating in 2007. During high school, he participated in wrestling and in 9th grade was state champion. He had been attending Central Lakes Community College in Staples. Brady was a member of Church of St. Mary.

Surviving are his parents, Julie Gilb of Willmar; Todd (and Staci) Gilb of Willmar; brother, Brandon (and fiancée, Jordan Nielsen) of Maplewood; maternal grandparents, Helmuth and Carol Wendorff of Maple Lake; paternal grandparents, John “Jack” and Barbara Gilb of Willmar; paternal great grandma, Donna (Gilb) Davis of Marshall and numerous aunts, uncles and cousins.

Margaret Grant, 85, of Willmar died Monday, April 21, 2008 at Rice Care Center in Willmar. A service will be 10:30 am, Friday at First Covenant Church in Willmar. Burial will be in Evangelical Free Cemetery, rural Kerkhoven. Visitation will be one hour prior to service at the church. Arrangements are with Harvey Anderson Funeral Home in Willmar.

Margaret Josephine Grant was born January 21, 1923, in Hayes Twp., Swift Co., MN, the daughter of Reynold J. and Clara (Syverson) Nelson. She graduated from Kerkhoven High School in 1941, as Valedictorian of her class. She moved to California in 1943 and eventually worked for the US Postal Service of which she retired. On January 30, 1961, Margaret was united in marriage to Walter Grant. Walter preceded her in death in 1971. She returned to Minnesota in 1991.

She was a member of First Covenant Church in Willmar where she was baptized on March 22, 2000.

Surviving are her sisters-in-law, Josephine Nelson of Willmar, Eleanor Nelson of Maple Grove; six nieces and five nephews.

In addition to her husband, Walter, she was preceded in death by her parents, four brothers and three sisters.

Bruce Moen, 62, of Willmar, died February 29, 2008 at Punta Gorda, Florida. A service will be held on Sunday, April 27, 2008 at 2:00 pm, at Calvary Lutheran Church in Willmar. Arrangements are with Harvey Anderson Funeral Home in Willmar.

Bruce Lee Moen was born on March 13, 1945 in Madison, MN, the son of Simon and Helen (Finbraaten) Moen. He was raised on a farm in the Madison area and graduated from Milan High School in 1963. He continued his education by pursuing a biology major at the University of MN, Morris and graduated in 1967. He then entered the US Army and served at Fort Mead, Maryland until 1969. After returning to MN, he met and married Darlene Hedin on June 12, 1971 at St. Ansgar’s Lutheran Church in Cannon Falls, MN. Following their marriage, they lived in Trimont, MN and Red Wing, MN where he worked in the agriculture business. In 1974, they moved to Willmar where Bruce began his 30-plus year career as partner of West Central, Inc.

He was baptized and confirmed at Borgund Lutheran Church in rural Madison, MN and was a member of Calvary Lutheran Church in Willmar.

Bruce’s life was rich with family, friends and adventure. He loved boating, fishing, farming, woodworking, flying, traveling, entertaining, golfing, and antique cars. Most of all, he enjoyed spending time with friends and family, whom he truly treasured. “Big Bru’s” love of life was infectious and he will be remembered for his magnetic personality, bear hugs, laughter, and ability to put a smile on everyone’s face.

Bruce died on February 29, 2008 in Punta Gorda, FL at the age of 62. He is survived by his wife, Darlene, three daughters and two sons-in-law: Rebbecca of Minneapolis, MN; Danielle and Brandon Johnson of Houghton, NY; and Laurel and Debashis Chowdhury of Laguna Niguel, CA. He will also be missed by his grandchildren; Marit, Luke and Quin Johnson; his siblings, Claire and Sylvia Moen, Bradley Moen, and Colleen Rhodes; 11 nieces and nephews; and countless friends who are considered family.

He was preceded in death by his father and mother.

Howard T. Simpson, 83, of Paynesville, died Sunday night, at Lakeview Gardens Care Home in rural Kimball. Services will be 11:00 a.m. Thursday, at Paynesville Lutheran Church in Paynesville. Burial will be held at 2:30 p.m. at Pelican Lake Methodist Cemetery in Buffalo. A visitation will be held for one hour prior to the service at the church.

Howard T. Simpson was born on November 25, 1924 in Cyrus, the son of Theodore and Hazel (Alvester) Simpson. He grew up in Hudson, Wisconsin where he attended a small country school. After his schooling, Howard worked for the railroad before entering the United States Army. Howard served his country during the Normandy Invasion in World War II. He was honorable discharged and returned home.

On July 2, 1947, Howard was united in marriage to June Link at Bethel Lutheran Church in Hudson. To this union a son and daughter were born. The family made their home in St. Paul where Howard worked for the City of St. Paul. Howard retired in 1983, after 32 years with the city. He and June moved to Rice Lake near Paynesville where they had vacationed for many years.

Howard was a former member of St. Mark’s Lutheran Church in St. Paul, and a current member of Paynesville Lutheran Church. He was active as an usher in both congregations. Howard was also a member of the VFW Post # 428 in St. Cloud.

Howard T. Simpson died on Sunday night, April 20, 2008 at Lakeview Gardens Care Home in rural Kimball at the age of 83. He is survived by his wife of 60 years, June; children, Bruce (Vicki) Simpson of Paynesville, Cheryl (Mike) Tobin of Chisago City; grandchildren, Matt, Tasha, Jody, Melissa, Jason, Ashley, and Justin; great-grandchildren, Trevor, Travis, Alex, Courtney, Alexis, Caleb, Jade, and Kloe; and sisters, Shirley, Lucille and Elaine.

He was preceded in death by his parents; brothers, Gordon and Donald; and sisters, Lois and Donna Mae.

Gloria R. Nelson, age 63 of Paynesville, died Wednesday, April 16, 2008 at the Paynesville Area Hospital. Funeral services will be 11:00 a.m. Tuesday, April 22, 2008 at Grace United Methodist Church in Paynesville. Burial will be in the Paynesville Cemetery. Visitation will be held from 5-7:00 p.m. on Monday, at the Johnson Funeral Home in Paynesville, and continue one hour prior to the service at the church.

Gloria Ruth Nelson was born on October 6, 1944 in Paynesville, the daughter of Willis and Rose (Brossard) Daniels. She attended Paynesville elementary and high school graduating in 1962. On August 25, 1962, Gloria was united in marriage to Elmer Nelson in Paynesville. To this union a son and two daughters were born. They made their home in Swift Falls, Belgrade and Paynesville where she worked as a homemaker. Together, Gloria and Elmer were able to share in 45 years of marriage, before Elmer’s death on April 7th of this year.

Gloria was a quiet and reserved person who enjoyed spending time at home with family. She was a loving and caring wife, mother and grandmother who will be dearly missed.

Gloria died on Wednesday, April 16, 2008 at the Paynesville Area Hospital at the age of 63. She is survived by her children, Randy (Lauree) Nelson of Pitt Meadows, British Columbia, Canada, Pamela Tjaden of Willmar, and Holli (Brian) Kragenbring of Willmar; grandchildren, Joshua, Zachary and Carissa Thompson; father, Willis Daniels of Paynesville; sister, Joyce (Michael) Tougas of Paynesville and numerous nieces and nephews.

Gloria was preceded in death by her mother, Rose and husband, Elmer.

L.C. “Squeak” Fifield, 93, of Willmar died Thursday at Rice Memorial Hospital in Willmar. Visitation will be from 3-5:00 pm Sunday with a Masonic Service by Sharon Lodge at 5:00 pm at Harvey Anderson Funeral Home in Willmar. Burial services will be held at 2:00 pm Monday at Russell, MN.

Lauris Clarence “Squeak” Fifield was born March 9, 1915, in Russell, MN, the son of Walter and Myrtle (Blaisdell) Fifield. He grew up in Russell where he received his education. On February 14, 1951, he was united in marriage to Violet E. Christensen in Tyler, MN. In 1953, they moved to Tyler where they farmed. In 1964, they moved to Willmar and Squeak worked various jobs, retiring from Willmar State Hospital in 1980.

Squeak was baptized at Bethel Lutheran Church where he was a member at the time of his death.

He was a long time member of Mason Lodge #291 in Russell – Balaton. Squeak’s family recalls his love of nature and animals, especially his dog Holly. When he was younger he enjoyed hunting deer and pheasants. Squeak had a wonderful laugh and was a great story teller and joker. His grandchildren recall going with him fishing and for rides around the lakes, playing Crocket with him and Squeak always had to have the black ball. He would always be there to help his family with their needed repairs. Squeak was proud of his grandchildren and great grandchildren and looked forward to their visits.

Surviving is his wife, Violet; children, Nyla Fifield of Willmar and Robert (and Betty) Fifield of Spicer; four grandchildren, Lia (and Jon) Rowe of Marshall, Brian ( and Kristine) Fifield of Hawick, Melissa (and Bryan) Jaenisch of Clara City and Jeremy Fifield of Roseland;six great grandchildren, Jaylon, Madison, Ashton and Karson Rowe of Marshall, Savannah and Mariah Fifield of Hawick and Sqeak was looking forward to the birth of his seventh great grandchild in August. Also survivivng is his twin sister, Laura Doty of Marshall.

He was preceded in death by his parents, one brother and two sisters.

Viola Wachtler, 90, of Clara City, died Wednesday at the Clara City Care Center. Funeral services will 1:30 pm Saturday at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Clara City. Interment will be in the church cemetery. Friends may call on Friday from 5 until 7 pm at the Harvey Anderson Funeral Home Clara City Chapel and 1 hour prior to services at the church on Saturday.

Viola (Behrends) was born on February 6, 1918, the daughter of Behrend and Anna (Kuiper) Behrends; she grew up in Clara City, graduating from Clara City High School in 1935. Viola continued her education at St. Cloud State Teachers College.

She was baptized and confirmed at Immanuel Lutheran Church where she was a member at the time of her death.

On March 30, 1940, Viola was united in marriage to George Wachtler, at St. Clara’s Catholic Church in Clara City. Following their marriage they lived in Clara City. This union was blessed with nine children.

Viola was a bookkeeper throughout her life. As caretaker and bookkeeper for Clara City Community Haus, Viola beautified the grounds around the buildings by making and maintaining the flower gardens. After she moved to Prairie Park Place she made sure that there was a flower box to beautify her patio.

She was a member of a homemakers group and the Clara City Garden Club.

Her family recalls her passion for flowers, starting her gardens from seed and carefully nurturing them into spectacular labors of love. Viola’s other hobbies included knitting, crocheting and reading. She wrote a collection of stories of her childhood memories to share with her family. She was a wonderful cook, making the best original Southern Fried Chicken and homemade bread. Viola was a strong advocate for education, not only for her family but for all. Viola loved to travel, taking several trips to London and throughout the United States.

Surviving are her children, Ann (and George) Thein, Sacramento, CA, Paul (and Rene) Wachtler, Willmar, William (and Ingrid) Wachtler, Gig Harbor, WA, Joel (and Margaret) Wachtler, San Francisco, CA, Colleen ( and Jerrell) Andresen, Clara City, Frank Wachtler, Willmar, Amy Wachtler, San Jose, CA, and Jacqueline (and Craig) Piepkorn, Mound, son-in-law, Scott Becker, Lakeville; 21 grandchildren and 11 great grandchildren. Also surviving is her sister, Shirley Johnson, McGregor, and sister-in law, Hazel Behrends, Willmar.

She was preceded in death by her parents, three brothers, Wendell, Merle and Lynn; and daughter, Jane Becker.

Pamela L. Brown, age 50 of Willmar died on Saturday, April 12, 2008 at Rice Memorial Hospital in Willmar. Memorial service will be 10:30 am on Wednesday, at the Church of St. Mary's in Willmar. Interment will be in the church cemetery. Visitation will be on Tuesday from 5-8pm with parish prayers 4:30pm at Harvey Anderson Funeral Home in Willmar and visitation will continue one hour prior to the service at the church on Wednesday.

Pamela Louise Brown was born on February 5, 1958 in Marshfield, Wisconsin, the daughter of Charles and Barbara (Lawler) Brown. Pamela grew up in Willmar where she graduated from Willmar High School in the class of 1976. She attended college at Moorhead State and Mankato State receiving a Physical Education degree. She returned to Willmar and worked as a Recreation Therapist for the W.R.T.C. and was an E.M.T. with the Willmar Ambulance Service. She continued her education and received her 4 year RN degree. Pam began working at Rice Memorial Hospital in Willmar in the ER. She became active as a foster parent, helping many children find families.

Pam was baptized and confirmed in the Catholic Faith, she was a member of the Church of St. Mary's in Willmar. She also volunteered at the school, 4-H club and foster parenting. Pam enjoyed quilting, playing softball, golfing and traveling. She was recently nominated for the "My Nurse Made a Difference" award at the hospital.

On Saturday, April 12, 2008, Pamela died at Rice Memorial Hospital in Willmar at the age of 50 years. She is survived by her father: Charles (Marlene) Brown of Willmar; brothers and sister: James (Jacqueline) Brown of Willmar, Michael (Laura) Brown of New London, Ted (Connie) Brown of Sartell, and Margaret Emberland of Coon Rapids; sister-in-law, Cheryl Brown of Belle Glade, Florida; four nephews; five nieces; and several aunts, and cousins and other relatives. Pamela is also survived by her three special boys: DaShawn, Lewis, and Joshua Russell.

She was preceded in death by her mother, brother Scott, grandparents: Laura and William Jensen and Hazel and William Lawler

Adeline Bluemke, age 89 of Belgrade, died Saturday, April 12, 2008 at the Belgrade Nursing Home. Funeral services will be 11:00 a.m. Saturday, April 19, 2008 at Grace Lutheran Church in Belgrade. Burial will be in Grace Lutheran East Cemetery in Belgrade. Visitation will be 5-7 p.m. Friday at the Johnson Funeral Home in Belgrade and for one hour prior to the services at the church.

Adeline Marion Bernice Bluemke was born on Nov 23, 1918 in Winthrop, one of identical twin daughters to Victor and Alma (Johnson) Anderson. She was baptized on Dec. 8, 1918 and confirmed on June 10, 1934, both at First Lutheran Church in Winthrop. She grew up in Winthrop where she attended and graduated from Winthrop High School in 1937.

On Dec. 30, 1945 she was united in marriage to Floyd Bluemke. To this union a daughter, Mary was born. They made their home and farmed near Gaylord until 1947 when they moved to Gibbon. In 1956 they moved to Belgrade where they continued to farm and Adeline worked as a homemaker and at Jennie-O produce for many years. They were able to share in 59 years of marriage before Floyd’s death on Nov. 18, 2005.

Adeline was a member of Grace Lutheran Church in Belgrade. She enjoyed gardening, flowers, reading, watching television, baking and serving her guests, making sure all visitors were fed before leaving.

Adeline died on Saturday, April 12, 2008 at the Belgrade Nursing Home at the age of 89. She is survived by daughter, Mary (Paul) Brenden of Belgrade; two grandchildren, Jason (Marie) Brenden of Woodbury and Dawn (Kyle) Marsh of Forest Lake; two great-grandchildren, Lilah Brenden and Brendan Marsh; six sister-in-laws, Ruth Anderson of Gaylord, Lenore Anderson of Osage, Leilah Anderson of Winthrop, Lillian Weckwerth of Green Isle, Luella (Leroy) Lofgren of South Haven and Janette Maahs of Ramsey; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Adeline was preceded in death by husband, Floyd; parents; five brothers; 4 sisters and numerous brother and sister-in-laws.

Hazel Elliott, age 86 of Willmar formerly of Kerkhoven died on Friday, April 11, 2008 at Bethesda Pleasantview in Willmar. Memorial service will be 2:00 pm on Tuesday at the Willmar Assembly of God. Burial will be at Hillside Cemetery in Kerkhoven. Visitation will be on Monday from 5-7pm at Harvey Anderson Funeral Home in Willmar. Memorials preferred to Rice Hospice.

Hazel Leone Rosemond Elliott was born on September 17, 1921 in Valley City, North Dakota, the daughter of Elvin J. and Rosemond (Sjoquist) Burchill. She attended District 16 country school in Lake Andrew Township and attended high school in New London. Hazel did house work for several neighboring farm families. She was united in marriage to Luverne Elliott on December 30, 1940 at Kerkhoven Presbyterian Church. The couple farmed in rural Murdock from 1940 until 1946 when they moved to rural Kerkhoven where they farmed. In 1979 they retired from farming and moved into Kerkhoven. They moved to Willmar in 1999. Luverne died on March 8, 2008.

Hazel was a member of the Kerkhoven Presbyterian Church where she was active in women’s circle. She was also active in the local Home Extension. Hazel enjoyed gardening, crocheting, embroidery and ceramics. Her family remembers the many blankets and afghans she would make for them.

Hazel is survived by her children: Derrol Elliott of Young America, Dorothy (and Vic) Poverud of Willmar, daughter-in-law Marit Elliott of Melrose; eleven grandchildren: Keith (and Julie) Elliott, Theresa Elliott, Kyle (and Teresa) Elliott, Amanda (and Ryan) Jessen, Karn (and Ryan) Moening, Blake (and Noelle) Elliott, Katie Elliott, Adam Elliott, Renee (and Greg) Barnes, Josh (and Lisa) Poverud and Michelle Poverud; seven great-grandchildren, Crystal, Nathaniel, Dominique, Katelynn, Brooke, William, and Lucas, Also are surviving her sister Ruby Ann Barnes of Kandiyohi.

She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, three brothers: Elvin “Bud”, Doug, and Bruce; children: Dennis in 1979, David and Carol in 2006.

Robert "Hoppy" Ammermann, 83, of Maplewood formerly of Clara City, died Thursday, April 10th. A funeral will be held at 1:00 pm, Wednesday at Bunde Christian Reformed Church in Bunde. Hoppy, as he was known on his CB, was born on October 19, 1924, in Clara City, Minnesota, the son of Paul and Mary (Gerdes) Ammermann. He grew up on a farm outside of Clara City, near Bunde and attended District 55 school through the 9th grade when he attended Clara City High School. After his schooling, Hoppy worked on the family farm and drove truck for Kone Brouwer. On March 28, 1946 he was united in marriage to Donna Benedict in the parsonage in Bunde. Following their marriage, they farmed and he continued to drive truck as an owner-operator. They have lived in various communities, including a lake home in Finlayson, MN, while Hoppy drove truck, retiring from over the road trucking in 1990. Even after retiring though, Hoppy had to stay behind the wheel and he continued to drive truck for different farmers during harvest in the Clara City area.

He was baptized and made his affirmation of faith at Bunde Christian Reformed Church where he had been a member while living in Clara City. He was charter member of the Friesen Historical Society and enjoyed woodworking. Hoppy was known for his good sense of humor and willingness to always share a joke.

Surviving are his wife, Donna of Maplewood; children, Michael (and Carol) of Woodbury; Diane (and Dan) Conlan of West St. Paul; Randall (and Margaret) of White Bear Lake; Debbie Vossen (and Jeff) of Minneapolis; and Galen Ammermann of Osceola, WI; 11 grandchildren, 8 great grandchildren and other relatives and friends including many at Donners Truck Stop in Clara City.

He was preceded in death by his parents, infant son, Roy and sister, Hilda Caspers.

Keith Roger Carlson 49, of rural Sunburg, died on Wednesday following a farm accident. Funeral service will be 11:00 am Tuesday at Hope Lutheran Church in Sunburg. Keith Roger Carlson was born on March 20, 1959, at Benson, Minnesota the son of Ellert and Dorothy (Klinghagen) Carlson. He grew up in rural Sunburg and attended Sunburg Elementary and graduated from Kerkhoven – Sunburg High School in 1977.

Keith farmed with his brother in rural Sunburg and Murdock and he continued to live on the family homestead. In addition to farming, Keith was active with the Sunburg Fire Department and Sunburg Ambulance.

He was baptized at Bethesda Lutheran in rural Murdock and was confirmed at Hope Lutheran Church in Sunburg, where he was a member at the time of his death. Keith had served on the church council and was currently President of Spring Creek Cemetery Board.

His family recalls how he loved trucking and his passion for farming. He liked to visit and had an infectious laugh. Keith was proud to serve with his fellow members of the Sunburg Fire Department and Ambulance personnel.

Surviving is his mother, Dorothy; brother, James ( and Nancy) Carlson of Murdock; sister, Deb (and John) Bills of Murdock; nephews, Michael Carlson, Bobby ( and Crystal) Carlson, and Wayne Bills; niece, Crystal Bills and great niece, Caleigh Carlson.

Keith was preceded in death by his father.

Elmer L. Nelson, age 69 of Paynesville, died Monday, April 7, 2008 at the St. Cloud Hospital due to injuries suffered in a motor vehicle accident.
Services will be 11 a.m. Saturday, April 12, 2008 at Grace Methodist Church in Paynesville. Visitation will be one hour prior to the services at the church. Burial will be in the Paynesville Cemetery in Paynesville.
Arrangements are with the Johnson Funeral Home in Paynesville.

Elmer LeRoy Nelson was born on September 1, 1938 in Sunburg, the son of Charles and Katie (Gerdes) Nelson. He attended school in the New London and Paynesville area. As a young man he worked for a mink farm in the area. On August 25, 1962, Elmer was united in marriage to Gloria Daniels. To this union a son and two daughters were born. They made their home in Swift Falls Belgrade and Paynesville. Together, Elmer and Gloria were able to share in 45 years of marriage.
Elmer worked and managed turkey farms for the last 46 years, most recently for Jennie-O. He enjoyed music, dancing and watching sports.
Elmer has been a wonderful and diligent caregiver to his wife the last few years. He was a loving husband, father and grandfather whom will be dearly missed.
Elmer died on Monday, April 7, 2008 at the St. Cloud Hospital at the age of 69. He is survived by his wife, Gloria; children, Randy (Lauree) Nelson of Pitt Meadows, British Columbia, Canada, Pamela Tjaden of Willmar, and Holli (Brian) Kragenbring of Willmar; grandchildren, Joshua, Zachary and Carissa Thompson; sisters, Violet (Melvin) Woltjer of Kandiyohi, and Geraldine (Vernon) Soine of Paynesville; brother, Donald Nelson of Paynesville; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Elmer was preceded in death by his parents.

Alworth Strande, age 85 of Spicer, died Tuesday, April 08, 2008 at Rice Memorial Hospital in Willmar.
Funeral service will be 11:00 a.m. Saturday, April 12, 2008 at St. John’s Lutheran Church in rural Atwater. Burial will be at Big Grove Lutheran Cemetery in rural Belgrade.
Visitation will be 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. on Friday at the Johnson Funeral Home in New London and for one hour prior to the services at the church.

Alworth Hadley Strande was born on May 6, 1922 in Brooten, the son of Koleman N. and Alma L. (Grindahl) Strande. He was baptized on May 8, 1922 and confirmed in June of 1937, both at Big Grove Lutheran Church. He grew up on the family farm and attended Gulsvig School House Dist. #109 and Brooten High School. On September 23, 1945 he entered the United States Army, where he served his country during WW II. He was honorably discharged on October 1, 1948 and returned home and began farming in the Brooten area. On October 12, 1975, Alworth was united in marriage to Idella Steinberg Bergum. They made their home near Atwater where he worked for Spicer Sports and Marine. Together, Alworth and Idella were able to share in 28 years of marriage before Idella’s death on February 7, 2004. Alworth moved to Spicer in retirement.
Alworth was a member of St. John’s Lutheran Church in Atwater. He enjoyed visiting with friends and family, farming and reading.
Alworth died on Tuesday, April 8, 2008 at Rice Memorial Hospital in Willmar at the age of 85. He is survived by his siblings, Norma Mueller of Paynesville, Earle D. (Ivadell) Strande of Brooten and Mary Lou (Dr. Ray) Lindeman of Paynesville; and numerous nephews and Idella’s nieces, Celia and Anette.
Alworth was preceded in death by his wife, parents, brother, Nels and niece, Debbie.

Selmer Gort, 80, of Willmar, died, Tuesday at Rice Memorial Hospital in Willmar. Funeral will be 10:30 am, Friday at First Reformed Church in Willmar. Burial will be in Fairview Cemetery in Willmar with Military Honors by American Legion Post #167. Visitation will be from 4-6 pm Thursday at Harvey Anderson Funeral Home in Willmar and continue one hour prior to services at the church on Friday.

Selmer was born on April 28, 1927, in Willmar, MN, the son of Isaac and Rynie (Brouwer) Gort. He attended elementary school in Roseland and graduated from Willmar High School in 1942. He was drafted into the United States Army and served two years in Japan and Korea.

Following his honorable discharge, he was united in marriage to Bess Yock of Danube on May 18, 1950 at Roseland Reformed Church. After being married for five months, he was called back into the Army and they lived in Missouri and Pennsylvania returning to Willmar in 1951. He worked for Montgomery Ward and Habicht’s Department Store for eight years before starting with the United States Postal Service retiring after 32 years. For 23 of those years, he also owned and operated Avenue Auto Sales.

He was a member of American Legion Post #167, VFW Post #1639, volunteered with the local Red Cross, and drove the veteran’s van for Kandiyohi County Veteran’s Service Office. Selmer was a committed and active member of his church, serving as a deacon, elder and Sunday school teacher. He also served as chair of the three phases of building of First Reformed Church. He enjoyed anything that had an engine, his coffee club at Cashwise, golfing, woodworking, fishing and spending time with family especially his grandchildren. He very much loved spending time at their family cabin on Big Kandiyohi Lake.

Surviving are his wife, Bess; daughters, Deb (and Scott) West of Willmar; Tammy (and Rick) Parker of Sartell; five grandchildren, Dustin, Derek and Dylan Parker, Samantha and Alexandra West; brother, Harley of Willmar; sister-in-law, June Gort of Danube and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents and brothers, Henry, Clarence, John, Herman and Sidney.

Howard L. Quisberg, 79, of Paynesville, died on Saturday evening, April 5, 2008, at his home. Services are 2:00 PM Thursday, at Paynesville Lutheran Church. Burial will be at Burbank Cemetery in rural New London. A visitation will be held on Wednesday from 5-8:00 PM, at the Johnson Funeral Home in Paynesville, and continue one hour prior to the service at the church. Memorials are suggested to Paynesville Lutheran Church or the Kidney Foundation.

Howard Luverne Quisberg was born on October 11, 1928 in Belgrade, the son of Adolph and Garnet (Metcalf) Quisberg. He was baptized on June 14, 1929, at Zion Lutheran Church in Belgrade, and confirmed into the Christian faith on June 20, 1943, at Audubon Lutheran Church in Audubon, Minnesota. Howard attended Concordia College in Moorhead for two years then transferred to several other colleges including Minneapolis College of Music. He received his degree in education at Black Hills State University in Spearfish, South Dakota. On April 9, 1951 Howard entered the United States Army, where he served as a clerk typist and assistant chaplain. He was stationed in Japan during the Korean War and was honorably discharged on March 19, 1953.

Howard taught school for twelve years in North and South Dakota, and Los Angeles, California. He then went to Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston where he worked for two years. Howard moved to Paynesville in 1967 where he worked at the Paynesville Community Hospital for 17 1/2 years before his retirement on September 6, 1984. Howard became a member of Paynesville Lutheran Church in 1968. He was a very active member serving on the church council as treasurer and financial secretary, he enjoyed serving as a Deacon, longtime member of the choir, and a liturgist. He was also a member of the church Resource Center Committee for many years.

Howard Luverne Quisberg died on Saturday evening, April 5, 2008 at his home in Paynesville at the age of 79. He is survived by his sister, Phyllis Overboe of St. Louis, MO; two nephews; four nieces; one great niece; eleven great nephews, one great great nephew; and numerous cousins.

Viola Green, 89, of Willmar, died Tuesday, April 1, 2008 at Renville County Hospital in Olivia. A funeral service will be held at 11:00 am, Monday, April 7, 2008 at Bethel Lutheran Church in Willmar. Burial will be at 2:00 pm, in Hector City Cemetery. Visitation will be one hour prior to services and arrangements are with Harvey Anderson Funeral Home in Willmar.

Viola was born on April 25, 1918, in Preston Lake Township, Renville County, Minnesota, the daughter of Herman and Ellen (Rost) Anderson. She grew up in Preston Lake Township where she attended country school. Following her graduation from Stewart High School in 1936, she worked in a restaurant in Hector. On June 9, 1940, she was united in marriage to Lester Green at First Lutheran Church in Hector. While Lester owned and operated an Allis-Chalmers/Moline Implement Dealership in Hector, Viola stayed home to raise their daughter, Janice. In 1970, they moved to White Bear Lake and in 1972, they moved to Eagle Lake, near Willmar and in 1979, they moved into Willmar. Lester preceded Viola in death on January 10, 1999.

Viola was a member of Bethel Lutheran Church in Willmar. She was an exceptional homemaker who enjoyed baking, cooking, sewing and hosting family and friends at her home. She was a sincere and compassionate caregiver to her husband and they cherished their time in Arizona and dancing. Viola also liked to play cards, especially bridge.

Surviving are her daughter, Janice Drake of Chandler, AZ: two grandsons, Dan Drake of New Brighton and Doug Drake of Duluth; three grandchildren, Tyler Simonson-Drake, Kacie and Kylee Midthus-Drake; sister, Margaret Ahl of Hector and sister-in-law, Julia Anderson of Buffalo Lake.

Besides her parents and husband, Lester, she was preceded in death by an infant son, Richard Bruce, her siblings, Florence Forsberg, Enid Smuda, Gladys Carlson, Harry Anderson and son-in-law, Jim Drake.

Lance Maylan Bengtson, age 51 of Spicer, died Wednesday, April 2, 2008 at his home in Spicer. Funeral services will be 3:00 p.m. Saturday, at Peace Lutheran Church in New London with Rev. Corey Bjertness and Rev. Paul Anderson officiating. Burial will be in Lebanon Cemetery in New London. Visitation will be Friday from 4:00 to 8:00 p.m. at the Johnson Funeral Home in New London and for one hour prior to the services at the Church.

Lance Maylan Bengtson was born on October 24, 1956 in Willmar, the son of Maylan and Muriel (Thorson) Bengtson. He was baptized at Lebanon Lutheran Church and confirmed at Peace Lutheran Church. He grew up on the family farm near Spicer and attended New London-Spicer High School, graduating in 1975. He continued his education at Willmar Technical College for machine tool trades, graduating in 1977. He later taught part time for two years at Willmar Technical College, as a machine tool instructor. On May 31, 1976, Lance entered the United States Marine Corp Reserve, where he served his country until his honorable discharge on May 20, 1982. On May 19, 1984, Lance was united in marriage to Katherine Puchalski. Together they raised a daughter and two sons were born. They made their home on the family farm and Lance worked for Litchfield Precision Components and later Hutchinson Technology. In 1997 he began work with Magnecomp Precision Technology and moved with his family to Thailand. They lived together

there for a year before they moved back home and Lance continued to travel back and forth. Through his career he worked his way up to Senior Development Engineer. On May 15, 2004, Lance was united in marriage to Donna Swenson. Together, they were able to share in 4 years of marriage.

Lance was a member of the Evangelical Covenant Church in New London. He enjoyed traveling, hunting, time with his boys in the shop and spending time with family and friends. His pride and joy was restoring his 54 Ford Pickup.

Lance died on Wednesday, April 2, 2008 at the age of 51 at his home near Spicer with his family by his side. He is survived by his wife, Donna; children, Shauna (Chad) Gough of Hopkins, Jesse Bengtson of Spicer and Jacob Bengtson of Spicer; mother, Murial Bengtson of New London; step-children, Dawn Swenson of St. Cloud, Daniel (Kristy) Swenson of St. Cloud and Deanna Jo Swenson of St. Cloud, sister, Lynette (Dave) Cors of New London ; brother, Lyle (Charleen) Bengtson of New London; 8 step-grandchildren and 1 niece and 4 nephews.

Lance was preceded in death by his father.

Lillian (Christensen) Dunlavy, 84, of Willmar, died Tuesday, April 1, 2008 at Bethesda Heritage Center in Willmar. A funeral will be at 11:00 am, Saturday, April 5, 2008 at United Methodist Church in Willmar. Burial will be in Fairview Cemetery in Willmar. Visitation will be from 5-7 pm, Friday at Harvey Anderson Funeral Home in Willmar and continue one hour prior to services at the church on Saturday.

Lillian was born on November 6, 1923, in Wagner, South Dakota, the daughter of Arnold and Mathilda (Frandsen) Christensen. She graduated from Ravinia High School in 1941 and in 1944 moved with her family to Arlington. She worked in a creamery prior after moving to Arlington. On October 19, 1947, she was united in marriage to Russell Dunlavy in Arlington. They moved to Willmar in 1951 and began farming. She worked for 11 years in the office of Kandiyohi County Clerk of Courts and for 15 years at the West Central Tribune before retiring at the age of 70.

She enjoyed volunteering as a 4-H leader, Extension Club leader, Sunday school teacher, and was active with the literacy program. Lillian enjoyed politics, music, playing the piano and organ and was a “news junkie,” always aware of current of events. She also was very well read, enjoying anything that she could read. Lillian was a member of United Methodist Church in Willmar.

Surviving are her children, Jeannine Sternke of Rochester; Colleen (and Ron Radano) Dunlavy of Madison, WI; Howard (and Nancy) Dunlavy of St. Paul; Tom Dunlavy of Forest Lake; six grandchildren, Benjamin (and Deb) Sternke, Aaron (and Jillian) Sternke, Kimberly (and Nathan) Van Brunt, Adam Sternke, Andrew Sternke and Ryan Dunlavy; and brother, Bud (and Wila Mae) Christensen of Arlington.

She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, Russell, sister, Edith Nielsen and son-in-law, Dennis Sternke.
