Paul G. Wearda age 80, of Willmar, died on Wednesday, September 30, 2009 at the Rice Memorial Hospital in Willmar. Service will be 1:30 pm, Saturday at First Reformed Church in Willmar. Burial will be in Fairview Cemetery, Willmar with full military honors provided by V.F.W #1639 and American Legion Post #167. Visitation will be from 5-8pm on Friday at Harvey Anderson Funeral Home in Willmar and one hour prior to service at the church.

Paul George Wearda was born on December 30, 1928 in rural Clara City, Minnesota, the son of Herman and Tomka Wearda. He grew up in the Clara City area where he attended District 55 Country School and Clara City Public School. Paul worked for his brother, Dick, at Wearda Implement Company in Clara City. Her served his country in the United States Army in 1951 during the Korean War. He received several metals including a Purple Heart and was a Prisoner of War. Paul received an Honorable Discharge in 1953.

He was united in marriage to Virginia on July 7, 1954 in Renville County. The couple moved to Willmar, opened Willmar Implement Company all in the same week. They owned and operated their business for 49 years. Paul enjoyed working with people and selling farm equipment.

Paul was baptized at Bethany Reformed Church in Clara City in 1929 and was active singing in the church quartet. He was a member of First Reformed Church in Willmar. Paul was also a member of the V.F.W. #1639, American Legion Post #167, Disabled American Veterans and an Ex-American P.O.W.

Paul loved participating in the great outdoors year round. His friends and family recall his delight fishing in open or on ice water. He enjoyed driving the speed boat, pulling tubers or waterskiers. With great fondness, his family recalls Paul meticulously manicuring his yards and vehicles. Paul exemplified strength, courage, honesty, directness, and a positive attitude throughout his entire life.

He is survived by his wife, children: Joyce Wearda of Falcon Heights, John (and Juli) Wearda of Willmar, four grandchildren: Kaitlin, Brock, Kristin and Bret; sister Ruth of Granite Falls and many other relatives.

Paul was preceded in death by his parents; brothers: Dick and James; sisters: Lena, Hilda, Pearl and Jeanette; and daughter, Pauline in 2004.

Hermina Genevieve Rasmussen, 101, of Willmar died Friday at Rice Care Center in Willmar. Her funeral service will be 1:00 pm, Friday at St. John’s Lutheran Church, rural Pennock. Visitation will be from 4-6:00 pm, Thursday at Harvey Anderson Funeral Home in Willmar and on Friday one hour prior to the service at the church. Burial is in the church cemetery.

Hermina was born May 27, 1908, in Cadillac, Michigan the daughter of Oldrick and Geneva (Klarer) Tengwall. She grew up in Michigan and Montana, before moving to Minnesota in 1920, where she attended rural schools. Hermina was united in marriage to Art Rasmussen. Following their marriage they farmed on the north side of St. John’s Lake. Art preceded her in death. Hermina continued to live in the Willmar area and most recently lived at the Centennial Apartments. She became a resident at Rice Care Center in January of 2007.

She was baptized and confirmed in the Covenant faith. While living in Willmar she attended the First Covenant Church and sang in the choir for a number of years. Hermina was a member of St. John’s Lutheran at the time of her death.

Hermina loved to go shopping and also enjoyed reading, sewing and visiting with family and friends. She was a very creative person sharing many of her crafts with her family. When she lived on the farm, they had a large garden that kept her very busy. Hermina’s dream these latter years was to go for a ride on a motorcycle; this dream did not come true.

Surviving are her siblings, George Tengwall (and special friend, Jan) of Willmar; LuElla (and Marvin) Johnson of Spicer, and Marvelle (and Virgil) Klint of Kirbyville, MO; sister-in-law, Gerry Tengwall of Minneapolis; and several nieces and nephews.

In addition to her husband, Art, she was preceded in death by her parents, three brothers, Wesley, Gordon and Darwin and two sisters, Alice and Frances.


Allen D. Nash, 52, of Kerkhoven, died on Saturday at Rice Care Center. His services will be 11:00 am Wednesday at West Lake Lutheran Church, rural Sunburg, with interment in the church cemetery. Friends may call on Tuesday from 5 until 8 pm at Harvey Anderson Funeral Home in Willmar and on day 1 hour prior to services at the church on Wednesday.

Allen Dean Nash was born on February 12, 1957, in Benson, Minnesota, the son of Donald Leon and Betty Jane (Peterson) Nash. He grew up in the Kerkhoven area, graduating from Kerkhoven High School in 1975.

Allen was united in marriage to Julie Kleinhuizen; this union was blessed with two daughters. On October 14, 1988, Allen was united in marriage to Judy Tootill at Des Moines, Iowa. They lived in Des Moines until 1997, when they moved to the Kerkhoven area. Allen worked at Arnolds of Willmar for the past ten year. He built their service and repair trucks to accommodate all the equipment.

He was baptized in February 1957, and confirmed in May of 1972, at West Lake Lutheran Church.

Allen’s family recalls how gifted he was being able to repair or build anything around the house and at work. He was a wonderful cook and enjoyed making candies, sweet treats and his famous bread pudding with his special sauce for the topping. Allen loved to play with his grandchild and took great pride showing them the trucks and tractors and other equipment he worked on. His family also recalls the fun he had with his nephews Tyler and Ian, making a snow igloo behind his house.

Surviving is his wife, Judy; parents, Donald and Betty Nash, Kerkhoven; daughters, Sharon (and Cyril) Rogers, Litchfield and Susan Nelson (and Shannon Svacina) of Carlton; step-son, Curtis Robbins, Waterloo, IA; nine grandchildren, Mason Scott Calhoun, Lindsey Marie Nichole Calhoun, Cyril A. Rogers, Isabelle M. Rogers, Aiden L. Rogers, Brooke Robbins, Audrey Robbins, Corrie Robbins and Amber More. Also surviving is his sister, Carol (and Jerry) Danielson, Spicer, and brother, James (and Julie) Nash, Dilworth; niece Nicole (and James) Mcaboy, nephews Tyler Nash and Ian Nash, and great nephew and niece, Adam and Ava Mcaboy.

Orville Eugene Kohl 80, of Willmar, died Sunday morning at Rice Memorial Hospital. His service will be 10:30 am Wednesday at Willmar Christian Reformed Church with private interment at Cloverleaf Cemetery. Friends may call from 5 until 7 pm Tuesday ONLY at the Harvey Anderson Funeral Home.

Orville Eugene Kohl was born on November 23, 1928, at Raymond, Minnesota, the son of Bert and Nellie (McLane) Kohl. He grew up in the Willmar area where he attended rural schools. Orville farmed in the Willmar area.

On August 28, 1959, Orville was united in marriage to Sena Pulscher at the Raymond Christian Reformed Church. This union was blessed with one son. Following their marriage they lived in Willmar and Orville worked for Berghuis Construction and in 1967, began working as a heavy equipment operator for the city of Willmar, until 1993, when he retired.

Orville was a member of the Willmar Christian Reformed Church at the time of his death.

Surviving is his wife Sena; son, Roger Kohl of Luverne; brother, Milton (and Georgia) Kohl of Warsaw, Missouri, and sister, Shirley (and Jim) Ristow of Rochester.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

William S. Kidd, age 79, of New London died Sunday, September 27, 2009, at Park Nicollet Methodist Hospital in St. Louis Park. Memorial services will be 11:00 a.m. Thursday, October 1, 2009, at Hope Presbyterian Church in Spicer. Visitation will be Wednesday from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. at the Johnson Funeral Home in New London and for one hour prior to the services at the church.   In lieu of flowers, memorials are preferred to Rice Hospice or Hope Presbyterian Church.

William Scott Kidd was born on October 2, 1929, in Austin, the son of Harry and Genevieve (Scott) Kidd. Always known to family and friends as Bill, he grew up in Grand Meadow and Eyota where he attended grade school and high school, graduating in 1947. On January 13, 1951, Bill married Shirley Erickson in Windom. Their marriage was blessed with three sons and a daughter. Shortly after their marriage, Bill joined the United States Navy, and served his country as a Naval Aviator for the next 21 years retiring in 1972 as a Lieutenant Commander. After his retirement, they moved to New London. He worked as a rural mail carrier until his retirement in 2002. Bill and Shirley were able to share in 58 years of marriage.

Bill was an active member of Hope Presbyterian Church in Spicer where he served as a deacon, was a member of church session, and sang in the church choir for 34 years. He enjoyed golf, reading, watching sports and movies, and spending time with his family. As a young boy Bill was in the Boy Scouts and served as scoutmaster when his three sons were active in Scouting. He had recently been volunteering his time to Rice Hospice and his church.

Bill died on Sunday morning, September 27, 2009, at Park Nicollet Methodist Hospital in St. Louis Park at the age of 79. He is survived by his wife, Shirley; children, Michael (Bonnie) Kidd of Fairfax Station, VA, Dr. Steven (Wendy) Kidd of Willmar, James (Shawn) Kidd of Clontarf and Marjorie (Gregory) Johnson of Grafton, ND; and seven grandchildren.

Bill was preceded in death by his parents and sister, Marian Pries.

Veronica Mildrid Balcik, age 82 of Lake Lillian, died on Wednesday, September 16, 2009 at Rice Memorial Hospital in Willmar. Mass of Christian Burial will be 10:30am on Wednesday at the Church of St. Mary in Willmar. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Visitation will be from 5-7 pm on Tuesday, at Harvey Anderson Funeral Home in Willmar with Parish Prayers and Daughters of Isabella Rosary at 6:30pm, visitation will continue one hour prior to the service at the church on Wednesday.

Veronica Mildred Balcik was born on June 21, 1927 in Jackson County, Minnesota, the daughter of George and Agnes (Cihak) Jandera. She lived in Jackson County where she attended school and graduated from Lakefield High School. She continued her education at Winona College, and later moved to Chicago, Illinois where she was employed by Frito Lay.

She was united in marriage to Norman Balcik on June 20, 1952 in Bismarck, North Dakota. They lived in Bismarck for a short time before moving to Willmar and in 1980 they moved to the Svea. Veronica was secretary for Balcik’s construction and was a landlord for many years.

She was baptized and confirmed in the Catholic faith. She was a member of St. Mary’s where he was active with Altar Guild, Rosary Society, and a member of the Daughters Of Isabella.

She is survived by her daughter Jean (and Gerald) Carlson of Willmar; five grandchildren: Christopher, Jeremy, Travis, Anthony and Michelle; and 11 great grandchildren; sister Rosemarie Smith of Bea California; brother Richard (and Sheryl) Jandera of Lakefield, MN and other nieces and nephews and other relatives.

Veronica was preceded in death by her parents; husband on May 25, 2009, and sister Maryann Johnson.

George A. Arntzen 80, of Willmar, died on Wednesday at Bethesda Heritage. Private burial will be held on Saturday at Cloverleaf Cemetery. A memorial service will be held at 10:00 am Monday at Bethesda Heritage Chapel. Arrangements are with Harvey Anderson Funeral Home.

George Arnt Arntzen was born on August 12, 1929, in Willmar, Minnesota, the son of Geo and Susie (Hilleren) Arntzen. In 1934, their family moved to Portland, Oregon where they lived until 1936, when they moved back to Minnesota. George attended his schooling in Willmar.

On May 1, 1971, George was united in marriage to Jean Hoglund. Following their marriage they lived in Willmar and George was self-employed, operating a TV and radio repair shop from their home.

He was a member of Evangelical Free Church of Willmar and he and Jean served many years helping out in the children nurseries and attended Super Senior Activities.

George is survived by his sister, Luella Olson of Madison, Wisconsin and brother and sister-in-law, Randy and Murlaine Arntzen of Colorado Springs, Colorado. Also surviving are other family and friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents and wife Jean, on August 30, 2003.

Demitri Joseph Sanchez, one month old infant, died on September 12, 2009 at Children’s Hospital in Minneapolis. Funeral service will be 1:00 pm on Thursday at Harvey Anderson Funeral Home in Willmar. Visitation will be one hour prior to the service at the church. Burial will be at Fairview Cemetery in Willmar.

Demitri Joseph Sanchez was born on August 18, 2009 at Rice Memorial Hospital in Willmar, the son of Jesus Sanchez III and Deidre Lynn Johnson of Willmar. He is also survived by his sister Liliana Maria; paternal grandparents: Jesus Sanchez Jr. of Texas, Elida Reyes de Sustaita of Renville grandparents: Patrick Johnson of Avon, Lori Johnson of Willmar; step-grandparents Carl Sexton and Jenette Goetsch; great-grandparents: Darlene Maternowski, Sofia Sandusky, Jesus Sr. and Guadalupe Sanchez.

He was preceded in death by uncles: Patrick Ryan Johnson, Benjamin Sachs; great-grandparents:Guadalupe Reyes, Margaret Johnson.

Lois F. Warne, age 89 of New London, died Friday, September 11, 2009 at Rice Memorial Hospital in Willmar. Funeral services will be 11:00 a.m. Wednesday, September 16, 2009 at the Evangelical Covenant Church in New London. Burial will be in the Morton City Cemetery near Morton. Visitation will be 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. Tuesday at the Johnson Funeral Home in New London and for one hour prior to the services at the church.

Lois Fay Warne was born on April 9, 1920 in Beaver Falls Township, near Morton, the daughter of George J. and Maude (Zumwinkle) Pregler. She grew up on a farm near Franklin and attended Fairfax High School, graduating in 1938. On June 7, 1939, Lois was united in marriage to Clarence H. Warne in Morton. Her early married life was spent living in Fairfax with her sister Donna while their husbands were serving their Country and Lois was raising 2 small children. When Clarence returned they spent a short time living in Raymond moving to New London in 1947. They made their home there until 1960 when they moved to Spicer.

Lois did some outside babysitting but mostly was committed to her family. She babysat her grandchildren, took care of her son-in-law during his illness, would go to Cosmos to help her parents and also babysat some of the great grandchildren. But mostly she was dedicated to taking care of her husband during his many ups and downs and actually saving his life a few times by constantly being by his side.

She loved music, traveling and driving through the mountains, and birds (especially cardinals). She could identify almost any bird and knew their "songs".

Lois died on Friday, September 11, 2009 at Rice Memorial Hospital in Willmar at the age of 89. She is survived by children, Dallas “Tex” (Jan) Warne of Spicer and Beverly Lambert (Elwood Williams) of New London; 6 grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; 3 great-great grandchildren; siblings, Donna Leske of Fairfax, George Pregler of Edinburg, ND, Goldye Hemingson of St. Louis Park, Merrill Pregler of Brainerd, Glenn (Velma) Pregler of Willmar, Alan (Carol) Pregler of Marshal, James Pregler of Minneapolis, Lloyd (Lillian) Pregler of Paynesville; and sister-in-laws, Violet Pregler and Iva Berberick.

Lois was preceded in death by her husband, Clarence in 2004; son-in-law, Gary Lambert; great-grandchildren, Kristine Warne and Cody Berg; and siblings, Myron Pregler and Mildred O’Reilly.

Donna M. Stien 74, of Willmar died on Tuesday at the St. Cloud Hospital. Her service will be 11:00 am Monday at Vinje Lutheran Church with interment at Cloverleaf Cemetery. Friends may call 1 hour prior to services at the church. Harvey Anderson Funeral Home is handling arrangements.

Donna Mae (Baker) was born on September 23, 1934, the daughter of Leo and Rose (Ferry) Baker. She grew up in Willmar where she attended her schooling.

On August 5, 1951, Donna was united in marriage to Raymond Peder Stien at Casita, Georgia. This union was blessed with eight children. They made their home in Willmar, where Donna worked at several cafes and also for Jennie-O Farms, retiring in the 1980's.

She was baptized and confirmed at the Church of St. Mary and was a member of Vinje Lutheran at the time of her death. Donna had served with the church women, serving groups and on the Altar Guild.

As a young lady Donna was the Lux's Soap Beauty Queen for Minnesota. She was a member of TOPS and currently attended Weight Watchers.

Her family recalls the many hours of enjoyment Donna had playing the piano. She loved her bells with each one having its individual sound. She had many flowers in her yard, adding beauty to her neighborhood. Donna cherished the friendship she had with her special friend Judy Erpenbach and the many hours of fellowship they had together. She was always looking for a bargain, going to garage sales looking for that special find. It was important to Donna that she never wanted anyone to suffer and over the years she shared with those who were less fortunate.

Donna's dogs Mia and Dolly and her adopted cats Rusty and Sassie brought much joy to her life. Donna always said her greatest accomplishment was her family, being so proud of each of them. Her home was the gathering place for family and friends for Thanksgiving, Christmas or any other occasion they could celebrate. She was a generous and compassionate person and taught her family the same, "to share what you have." She always told them that after she died, whenever they saw a pool or any type of body of water that they should think of her.

As a final gift to her family, Donna wrote them all a note or letter expressing many thoughts she wanted to share with each of them. She also left notes in special places around her home that the family has found, sharing a special memory with them.

Surviving are her children, Michael Stien, Topanga, CA, Daniel (and Mary) Stien, Lake Lillian, Kathleen (and Jerry) Goosmann, Spicer, LeAnne (and Mark) Nelson, Willmar, Dawn (and Craig) Marks, Wells, Linda (and Gary) Phillips, West Salem, WI, and Stacy Stien (and Dan Schafer) of Lake Lillian; 23 grandchildren and 21 great grandchildren. Also surviving is her sister, Barbara Sloboda of Manchester, NH and step sister, Cathy McKenzie of Litchfield and other family and friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents, infant son, Patrick, husband Ray, on December 28, 2005, and her son-in-law, Jerry Kruger

Rev. Lowell D. Johnson, 82, of Kerkhoven died Wednesday at Bethesda Pleasantview in Willmar. His service will be 2:00 pm, Saturday at Evangelical Free Church in Kerkhoven with interment in the church cemetery. Visitation will be 5-7:00 pm, Friday at Harvey Anderson Funeral Home in Kerkhoven and one hour prior to the service at the church on Saturday.

Rev. Lowell D. Johnson was born January 16, 1927, in Ellsworth, WI, to Herman V. and Pearl (Johnson) at his farm home midst a winter blizzard. Weighing only 2 ½ lbs, we believe God had a ministry and plan for him and thus spared his life. He truly was a miracle baby. His education began in a one-room schoolhouse and he graduated from high school in 1945 in Ellsworth, WI. He was confirmed at Bethel Covenant Church but accepted the Lord as his personal Savior at the age of 19 following a tragic tractor accident when one of his buddies was killed. God used that incident to bring salvation to several. As a result, three served in fulltime ministry, he included. Feeling the call of God, he prepared for ministry at Bethel College, St. Paul, MN; North Park College, Chicago, IL and completed his studies at St. Paul Bible College with a Bachelor of Science and Theology degree in 1956. He was ordained on August 10, 1962. He married Elaine (Elsberry) Johnson on May 25, 1957 in Brunswick, NE.

He began his ministry under the American Sunday School Union in northern Minnesota for two years then served his remaining years under the Evangelical Free Church of America. Church he served were: Malmo / Isle, MN – 4 ½ yrs.; Burns, Elk River, MN – 2 yrs.; Kerkhoven, MN – 15 yrs.; Fern Cliff, Wayland, IA – 5 yrs.; and Baxter, IA – 2 ½ yrs. Interim pastorates included: Paynesville, Windom, Hector and Appleton all in Minnesota and Albert City in Iowa concluding about 40 yrs. in the ministry. Lowell and Elaine retired in Broken Arrow, OK moving there in 1996. He was faithful in service at the Bethany Free Will Baptist Church in Broken Arrow. On October 1, 2003, they returned to Kerkhoven as a result of his health. Elaine was his caregiver for over eight years and on June 9, 2008, he entered Bethesda Pleasantview Memory Care Unit.

He is survived by his wife of 52 yrs.; two daughters, Vickie Johnson of Antioch, CA and Anita (Curt) Poverud of Coweta, OK; and one son, Ritchie (Janet) Johnson of Kerkhoven; five grandchildren: Nathan (Melody) Poverud, Keith Poverud, Grant Johnson and Ellen Johnson.

His parents preceded him in death. Only eternity will reveal the results of his labors. He was a gentle, loving person who loved his Lord. Lowell was unassuming but strong in his faith. He served the Lord faithfully and he sincerely loved his church families. He loved his family very much and was a Godly example for all. We will miss him.

Veronica (Fronie) E. Kotschevar, 102 of Belgrade died Monday night, September 7, 2009 at the Belgrade Nursing Home. Funeral Mass will be 1:00 pm Friday, September 11, 2009 at St. Francis de Sales Catholic Church in Belgrade. Burial will be at St. Agnes Catholic Cemetery in Roscoe. A visitation will be held one hour prior to the service. In lieu of flowers memorial are preferred.

Veronica Elizabeth Kotschevar was born in the Eden Lake Township on September 22, 1906, the daughter of Lucas and Bernadine (Braeglman) Flint. On September 23, 1906 she was baptized at Sts. Peter and Paul Catholic Church in Richmond. She attended a small country school close to their family farm. On October 2, 1928 Veronica was united in marriage to Christian Kotschevar at Sts. Peter and Paul Catholic Church in Richmond. This union was blessed with a son and a daughter. The family made their home in the Roscoe area where they farmed until 1966 when Christian died.

After Christian’s death Veronica moved into Paynesville where she worked for the Paynesville Area Hospital retiring in 1981. After her retirement she moved to Oakridge Manor in Melrose. In 2004 Veronica moved to the Belgrade Nursing Home.

Veronica was a member of St. Francis de Sales Catholic Church in Belgrade. She was a very hard working woman who enjoyed cooking, cleaning, and gardening. Above all else she enjoyed spending time with her children, grandchildren, great grandchildren, and friends.

Veronica E. Kotschevar died on Monday night, September 7, 2009 at the Belgrade Nursing Home at the age of 102. She is survived by daughter, Eileen Lieser of Belgrade; 10 grandchildren, many great and great-great grandchildren; nieces and nephews.

Veronica was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Christian; son, LeVern in 2006; siblings, Katherine Theilen, Mary Mackendanz, Leo Flint, Theresa De Morrett; a grandson; and 2 great grandchildren.

Jeffrey L. Olson, age 48 of New London, died Tuesday, September 8, 2009 at the University of Minnesota Hospital in Minneapolis. A visitation will be held Friday, September 11, 2009 from 3:00 to 5:00 pm followed by a 5:00 p.m. prayer service at the Johnson Funeral Home in New London. Burial will be at Oak Hill Cemetery in New London.

A celebration of Jeffrey’s life will be held on Saturday, September 12 at the New London Senior Center from 10 to 12 noon. In Lieu of flowers, memorials are preferred.

Jeffrey Lynn Olson was born on Nov 28, 1960 in Minneapolis, the son of Norman Olson and June Olson Lobitz. He grew up in Maple Plain. In 1984, Jeff was united in marriage to Jan Marie Anderson in Willmar. To this union one daughter was born. They made their home in Annandale until moving to New London where he worked as a landscaper for Mikes Dock and Yard. Jeff and Jan were able to share 5 years of marriage before Jan’s death in June of 1990.

Jeff’s family remember him as a amazing man, always making everyone laugh. He lived life to its fullest, never complaining and always carefree. He enjoyed spending time with family and friends and was always the life of the party. In his spare time he liked to work on vehicles, BBQ, fish, and watch the MN Twins.

Jeff died on Tuesday, September 8, 2009 at the University of Minnesota Hospital in Minneapolis at the age of 48. He is survived by his daughter, Jennifer Olson of Crystal; mother, June Lobitz of Willmar; father, Norm (Bonnie) Olson of Clear Lake: maternal grandmother, Taleta Prekker of Clara City; companion, Roxane Sommerfeld of New London; brothers, James (Mary) Olson of Jackson, MS, Joel Olson of Willmar, Jerome (Becky) Olson of New London and Jesse Olson of New London and numerous nieces, nephews and great-nieces and nephews.

David “Roger” Lief, 89, of Willmar, died Tuesday, September 8, 2009 at Rice Hospital in Willmar. His funeral will be 10:30 am, Saturday at Redeemer Lutheran Church in Willmar. Burial will be in Cloverleaf Cemetery. Visitation will be Friday from 5-7 pm at Harvey Anderson Funeral Home in Willmar and continue one hour prior to the service at the church on Saturday.

Roger was born on December 11, 1919, in Watertown, SD, the son of Olaf and Francis (Fornell) Lief. As a young child, Roger’s family moved to Willmar where he attended Willmar Public Schools. On June 28, 1941, he was united in marriage to Wilma Tesch in Willmar. Roger enlisted into the United States Army in 1943 and was honorably discharged in 1946. He returned to Willmar and worked for Great Northern – Burlington Northern Railroad, retiring after 32 years, in 1980. He had been an active member of the Great Northern Railroad Historical Society, Great Northern Goats and the Veterans of Foreign Wars.

Surviving are his wife, Wilma of Willmar; children, Gerald (and Pat) Lief of Willmar; David (and Sandra) Lief of Mason City, IA; Carol (and Roger) Olson of Gettysburg, SD; Rodney Lief of Willmar and Thomas (and Jackie) Lief of Federal Way, WA; eight grandchildren and 11 great grandchildren. Also surviving is his sister, Gladys Easterlund of Burnsville,

His parents and brothers, Ole and Russell preceded him in death.

Florence M. Frink, 98, of New London died on Sunday morning, September 6, 2009, at GlenOaks Care Center in New London. A funeral service will be held at 11:00 AM on Friday, September 11, 2009 at Peace Lutheran Church in New London. Burial will be at Oak Hill Cemetery in New London. A visitation will be held for one hour prior to the service at the church. Services are entrusted to Johnson Funeral Home in New London.

Florence Marion Frink was born on August 2, 1911, in the Roseville Township, the daughter of John and Effie (Smith) McLouth. She grew up in New London where she attended New London Elementary School. Florence’s father built roads for a living so after her schooling she traveled with her family and helped take care of the household duties.

On May 19, 1937, Florence was united in marriage to John Frink at Gausdal Lutheran Church in rural New London. This union was blessed with a daughter. John worked for the rail road so the family moved frequently. They made their home in Barnesville, Paynesville, New London, Hancock, Marshall, and Sioux Falls, before retiring in back in New London.

Florence was baptized at the Presbyterian Church in New London and was confirmed into the Christian Faith at Paynesville Lutheran Church in Paynesville. She was a member of Peace Lutheran Church in New London. Florence was very active in the Peace Lutheran Women of the ELCA.

Florence loved going to dances, on Saturday nights John and she would always be found at a local dance. Florence was a great hostess and loved entertaining company at her home. She and John enjoyed traveling and believed that planning the trip was half the fun. Florence liked to play cards and learned how to bowl after John passed away. She was an avid fan of the New London – Spicer Lady Wildcat basketball team and the Minnesota Twins. More than anything she loved spending time with her grandchildren and great grandchildren.

Florence M. Frink died on Sunday morning, September 6, 2009, at GlenOaks Care Center in New London, she was 98. Florence is survived by her daughter, Jean (Ron) Ready of Winona; 5 grandchildren, Jay (Terri) Lee of Coeur d’Alene, ID, Barry (Richard) Lee of Minneapolis, Danelle (Dennis) Williams of Manson, IA, Aldean (Robyn) Lee of Lakewood, CA, Blaine Lee of Des Moines, IA; 4 great grandchildren; 4 great great grandchildren. Florence is also survived by a special niece, Annie Monson.

She was preceded in death by her husband, parents, one grandchild, 2 sisters, and 2 brothers.

Sophie A. Halverson, 93, of Belgrade died Sunday, September 6, 2009 at her home. Funeral services will be 11:00 a.m. Friday, September 11, 2009 at Trinity Lutheran Church in Brooten. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Visitation will be Thursday from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. at the Johnson Funeral Home in Belgrade and for one hour prior to the services at the church.

Sophie Ann Halvorson was born on September 7, 1916 in Gilman, the daughter of Joseph and Martha (Golla) Danlake. She grew up and attended country school near Gilman. On October 6, 1941, Sophie was united in marriage to Jerome Halvorson. They made their home in rural Belgrade and Brooten where they had a dairy farm. She was especially fond of raising the chickens, milking the cows and cooking. She was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church in Brooten where she was active in her circle and WELCA. She enjoyed gardening, playing cards and cooking. She was well known for her great pies and big meals. She was a loving aunt to all her nieces and nephews but especially Dennis who helped on the farm and Betsy who she cared for as a young girl and was a grandmother to her children, Angela and Steffen.

Sophie died on Sunday, September 6, 2009 at her home in Belgrade at the age of 93. She is survived by sisters, Hattie Sagedahl of Brooten, Ann Carson of St. Paul, Frances Blank of Foley and Selma Robak of Foreston; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Sophie was preceded in death by her husband, Jerome; parents; brothers, Zelmer Jedlicka and Sylvester Jedlicka

Winnie Rierson, 79, of Atwater, died Friday, September 4, 2009, at Sunny View in Atwater. Her funeral will be 1:00 pm, Wednesday, September 9, 2009 at Faith Lutheran Church in Spicer. Burial will be in Cloverleaf Cemetery in Willmar. Visitation will be from 5-7 pm, Tuesday at Harvey Anderson Funeral Home in Willmar and continue one hour prior to the service on Wednesday at the church.

Winnie was born on July 28, 1930, in Fergus Falls, MN. When she was 18 months old, Robert and Emily (Sandstrom) Pfau adopted Winnie. She grew up in Willmar on the east side, attending Willmar Public Schools. In 1946, Winnie was united in marriage to Burton Rierson. She drove school and city bus in Willmar and also drove taxi, while raising six children by herself. Winnie had a very big heart and a concern for others as she demonstrated by being a foster parent for many years. In 2003 Winnie moved to Spicer where she made many friends prior to moving to Sunny View in Atwater this past January.

She was baptized and confirmed at Vinje Lutheran Church in Willmar and was recently a member of Faith Lutheran Church in Spicer.

Her family remembers her passion for football and the Minnesota Vikings; her love of animals especially cats and her beloved “Scooter,” and her great sense of humor.

Surviving is her family, Richard Rierson of Paynesville; Kay Rierson of Oakdale; Mike (and Karen) Rierson of Shickshinny, PA; Brenda (and James) Holtkamp of New London; Steven (and Susan) Rierson of Willmar; Dj Rierson of New London and foster daughter, Judy Reek; 10 grandchildren and 16 great grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents, grandson, Jason Rierson and daughter-in-law, Jean Rierson.

Cindy A. Westby, age 55 of Spicer, died Wednesday, September 2, 2009 at Rice Memorial Hospital in Willmar. Mass of Christian Burial will be 2:00 p.m. Sunday, September 6, 2009 at Our Lady of the Lakes Church in Spicer. Visitation will be Saturday from 5:00 to 8:00 pm at the Evangelical Covenant Church in New London where there will be a 7:30 pm prayer service. Visitation will continue on Sunday for an hour prior to the service at Our Lady of the Lake Church in Spicer. Burial will be in Lake Florida Mission Cemetery in rural Spicer. Arrangements are with the Johnson Funeral Home in New London. In Lieu of Flowers, Memorials are preferred.

Cynthia Ann Westby, was born in Saint Paul on July 18, 1954. Cynthia was the first of six children born to her parents, Claude and Marge Medina and grew up in West Saint Paul. She graduated from Brady HS in 1972 and went on to receive a degree in physical therapy from the U of M. She met her future husband Gary Westby at Fort Snelling State Park where they both were working. They were married in November of 1978. They lived in Richfield for a couple of years where Brian, their first child, was born. They moved to Owatonna where their sons Ben, Adam and Stephen were born. Their road then brought them to the New London-Spicer area where they finally had their little girl, Andrea. Cynthia worked as a physical therapist at Owatonna until she moved to Spicer where she worked at Rice Memorial Hospital for nearly 20 years. Cynthia’s priority was to her husband and children, and she devoted her life to them – supporting first her husband in his occupation and all pursuits, attending nearly all of her

children’s sporting and extra curricular events, and raising them to become loving and devoted children themselves. In the little free time her family allowed her, she enjoyed gardening, playing games with her family, and playing and listening to music. She supported her husband in the creation of Prairie Woods Environmental Learning Center, and after his death she served on the board of directors.

Cynthia is survived by her parents, Claude and Margaret Medina; grandmother Margaret Franklin; siblings Michael (and Carol) Medina, Margaret (and Colin) McQuillan, Timothy (and Shelly) Medina, Anne (and Mark) Sorteberg, and Paul (and Rachelle) Medina; sons Brian (and Heather) Westby, Benjamin (and Rachel) Westby, Adam Westby, Stephen Westby (and fiancé Jessica Lipinski); daughter Andrea Westby; and grandchildren Garret Leenstra, Brecken Westby, and Elinor Westby. She is preceded in death by her husband, Gary Westby, in 1997. She was faithful to God and to her family.

Robert G. Moe, 80, of Brooten died on Tuesday, September 01, 2009 at Glenwood Retirement Village in Glenwood. Funeral services will be 11:00 am Friday at South Lake Johanna Lutheran Church in rural Brooten. Burial will be in the church cemetery. A visitation will be held from 5-8:00 pm on Thursday at the Johnson Funeral Home in Belgrade, and continue one hour prior to the service at the church.

Robert Gerald Moe was born on October 26, 1928, on the family farm in the Lake Johanna Township, the son of Oscar and Tonie (Gunderson) Moe. Bob was baptized and confirmed at South Lake Johanna Lutheran Church where he later became a member. He grew up on the farm where he attended District 56 Country School, and later graduated from Brooten High School with the class of 1946.

On October 13, 1951 Bob was united in marriage to Nancy Lakie at Westminster Presbyterian Church in Minneapolis. To this union three boys and a girl were born. They lived in rural Brooten and farmed from 1951-1956. They then moved to Barnesville where they operated Bijou Theatre. They later owned and operated Moe School Bus Line until 1969. Bob then became an independent grant writer and was instrumental in getting low rent housing for seniors in Barnesville, Glenwood, Brooten, and Belgrade. He also helped gain funding to build parks in Barnesville, Elbow Lake, Herman, Glenwood, and Terrace. Bob then returned to the Brooten area where he was the city administrator for Glenwood and managed the sewer project. He was also vital in building many airports and creating many housing projects.

Bob served as a trustee and president of his church. He was a member of the Barnesville Lions Club, the Glacial Ridge Hospital Board, and Lake Johanna Township Board.

Bob enjoyed hunting, fishing, and golfing. He and Nancy enjoyed spending their summers at Lake Linka. Throughout his years Bob owned many dogs which he loved. He also loved spending time with his grandchildren.

Robert Gerald Moe died on Tuesday, September 1, 2009 at the Glenwood Retirement Village, he was 80. Bob is survived by his wife of 57 years, Nancy; sons, David (Donna) of Brooten, John (Lois) of Brooten, Robert of Brooten; daughter, Fay Holthusen (Ed Freitag) of New London; 7 grandchildren, Tonie (Randy) Dickmann, Sarah (Greg) Oeltjenbruns, Amanda (Noah) Anderson, Matthew (Jamie) Moe, Alexis (Michael) Marquardt, Marc Bredberg, and Andrea Holthusen; 5 great grandchildren, Justin, Kendahl, Taylor, Logan, and Mason. Bob is also survived by his sister Norma Moe Olson of St. Paul; brother, Earl (Boots) Moe of Rapid City; sisters-in-law, Rhoda Moe of New London, Mary Lakie Hermann of Macomb, IL; nieces and nephews.

Norton Thomton, 92, of Willmar, died Tuesday, September 1, 2009 at Bethesda Pleasant View in Willmar. His funeral will be 10:30 am, Saturday, September 5, 2009 at Vinje Lutheran Church in Willmar. Burial will be in Sunset Cemetery in Montevideo with Military Honors by American Legion Post #167 of Willmar. Visitation will be Friday from 5-8 pm at Harvey Anderson Funeral Home in Willmar and continue one hour prior to the service on Saturday.

Norton was born on August 1, 1917, in Montevideo, Minnesota, the son of Emil and Julia (Lund) Thomton. He grew up in Montevideo where he attended his schooling and graduated from high school in 1935. He worked for his parents in their grocery store and drove a grocery wholesale truck until enlisting into the United States Army in 1941. He served in North Africa and Europe eventually ending in Ireland. In 1945, he was Honorably Discharged with numerous meritorious awards including a Silver Star with Gold Clusters. He returned to Montevideo and began working with Northwestern Bell Telephone Company.

On January 19, 1946, he was united in marriage to Hazel Olsen in Montevideo. They lived in Montevideo for a short time before Norton transferred to Willmar. He worked for Northwestern Bell for 36 years, retiring in 1981. He was a member of American Legion Post #167; having served on the Honor Guard for many years and served as the Post Commander.

Norton was baptized and confirmed at Our Savior’s Lutheran Church in Montevideo and was an active member of Vinje Lutheran Church where he had served as an usher.

Norton was an avid sportsman, enjoying hunting and fishing. Norton also enjoyed playing multiple sports in high school and had the nickname, “Nuts,” He even received a football scholarship to Augustana College. When summer passed and golfing at Valley was done, Norton could always be seen enjoying a high school sporting event, rarely missing an opportunity to attend.

Surviving are his sons, Ronald (and Carol) Thomton of Clara City; Mark Thomton of New London; granddaughter, Danielle (and Owen) Marcus and grandson, Ryan (and Shannon) Thomton; three great grandchildren, Van and Quinn Marcus and Sequoia Thomton. Also surviving are his brothers, Cleon Thomton of Sioux Falls, SD and Ralph Thomton of Litchfield.

Preceding him in death are his parents, wife, Hazel on November 8, 2003 and sister, Eldora Tusberg.

Jon Alan Nichols, age 54 of Spicer died on Friday, August 28, 2009 at his home in rural Spicer, after a 7 year battle with cancer. Memorial Service will be 11:00 am Friday at Peace Lutheran Church in New London. Visitation will be one hour prior to service at the church. Burial will be in Cloverleaf Cemetery in Willmar.

Jon Alan Nichols was born on May 29, 1955 in Willmar, Minnesota, the son of Donald and Ione (Johnson) Nichols. He grew up in Willmar and graduated from Willmar High School in the class of 1973. Jon continued his education at the Minneapolis Vo-Tech graduating with an Electrician Degree in 1978. He was united in marriage to Kimberly Kay Thomsen on August 19, 1978 at Bethel Lutheran Church in Willmar. The couple lived in St. Louis Park and Eden Prairie where Jon was employed as an IBEW Local 292 Union Electrician, the last 28 years for Medina Electric. In May of 1993 they moved to Spicer. Due to health reasons he retired in June of 2009.

Jon was baptized and confirmed at Bethel Lutheran Church in Willmar. He was currently a member of Peace Lutheran Church in New London where he had served as an usher.

Jon enjoyed water skiing, snow skiing, snowmobiling and traveling. He loved his kids and their friends, always being a father figure to them.

Jon died on Friday, August 28, 2009 at his home in Spicer. He is survived by his wife Kim of Spicer; children: Anthony (AJ) Nichols of Minnetonka, Dana Nichols of Spicer; mother: Ione Nichols of Willmar; sister Nancy (Dale) Baklund of Hutchinson; brother David (Gail) Nichols of Eden Prairie; and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his father.

Robert S. Imdieke , age 88 of Elrosa, died Friday morning, August 28, 2009 at St. Michael’s Hospital in Sauk Centre. Mass of Christian Burial will be 11:00 a.m. Monday, August 31, 2009 at St. Peter and Paul Catholic Church in Elrosa. Visitation will be Sunday from 4:00 to 8:00 p.m. at the church, where there will be a 7: 30 p.m. Parish Prayer Service. Visitation will continue on Monday for one hour prior to the service at the church. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Arrangements are with the Johnson Funeral Home in Belgrade.

Robert Sylvester Imdieke was born on Dec. 25, 1920 in Bluffton MN, the son of Herman G. and Gertrude (Breitbach) Imdieke. He grew up on the family farm in Bluffton until the age of 13 when the family moved to a farm near Elrosa. He attended Belgrade High School graduating in 1940. His education continued at the U of M Ag. School in St. Paul.

On Oct. 10, 1944, Bob married Mary Ann Braun. They raised thirteen children on the family farm near Elrosa. Milking registerd Holstein cows and harvesting crops were the primary sources of income.
Bob was a member of SS Peter and Paul Catholic Church and for over 60 years he sang in the choir which his father originated in 1944. Other community activities included being a charter member of the building committee of the Catholic School and being on the REA board of directors.

During rare leisure time in his younger years Bob enjoyed fishing and attending local baseball games. During retirement he particularly enjoyed playing Solo at the Lake George Shack and at Bucky’s. His wife, children and grandchildren came first in Bob’s life and memories of a lifetime will be held close by them all.

Bob died on Aug 28, 2009 at St. Michael’s Hospital in Sauk Centre at the age of 88. He is survived by his wife of 65 years, Mary Ann; daughters: Mary Ellen Imdieke, Bonnie (Tom) Malterer, Norie (Gary) Mohs, Geri (Hal Roadman), Amy Imdieke; sons: Bob (Pam), Rick (Shelley), Roger (Judy), Rollie (Kim), Tom and Todd (Julie); daughters-in-law: Pam and Sally; 27 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren.

Bob was preceded in death by his sons Ron and Tim; infant twin sons; parents; brothers: Herman, Wendelin and Ervin; sisters: Sr Leonissa OSB, Marcella Meyer, Bertha Roelike, and Vi Bayer.

Jenna Lynn Van Buren 19, of Willmar, died on Wednesday, August 26, 2009 at Hennepin County Medical Center from injuries sustained in an auto accident. Her service will be 11:00 am Monday at First Covenant Church in Willmar with interment at Cloverleaf Cemetery. Friends may call on Sunday from 4 until 6 pm at Harvey Anderson Funeral Home and on Monday 1 hour prior to services at the church.

Jenna was born on February 3, 1990, in Sioux City, Iowa, the daughter of Scott and Deb (Faber) Van Buren. Their family moved to the Willmar area where Jenna graduated from Willmar Senior High in 2008. She was a member of the National Honor Society, Student Leadership Team, and participated on the swimming and diving team. Jenna also served with the YMCA Youth and Government. She was a sophomore at Augustana College, Sioux Falls, South Dakota at the time of her death.

Jenna was baptized in March of 1990, at Sheldon, Iowa and confirmed in May 2004, at First Covenant Church in Willmar. She was active with the Student Leadership Team, and the Mexico Mission Trip, she served two years with the Ecuador Missions and was a member of On Call.

Surviving are her parents, Scott and Deb Van Buren; sister, Melissa Van Buren of Minneapolis, and her four year old nephew, Elijah Van Buren; grandparents, Albert and Marilyn Van Buren of Willmar and Marilyn Faber Shafer and Lorin Shafer of Boyden, Iowa.

Jenna was preceded in death by her maternal grandfather, Marv Faber.

Paul Stockland, age 50 of Hopkins formerly of Pennock, died on August 24, 2009, at his home in Hopkins. Memorial service will be 2pm Saturday at Mamrelund Lutheran Church in Pennock. Burial will be at Mamrelund Lutheran Cemetery in Pennock. Arrangements are with Harvey Anderson Funeral Home in Willmar.

Paul William Stockland was born on December 11, 1958 in Willmar, Minnesota, the son of Eli and Ruth (Peterson) Stockland. He grew up in Pennock where he attended elementary school and graduated from Willmar High School in the class of 1977. He was employed at Pennock Oil for a number of years before moving to the Twin Cities. He moved to Hopkins and began working for Honeywell International where he was employed as an overseas shipping clerk for over 24 years.

Paul was baptized on December 11, 1970, and confirmed on May 19, 1974 at Mamrelund Lutheran Church in Pennock. He was active in youth baseball in Pennock and was currently on a golf league.

Paul enjoyed sports: baseball, basketball and especially playing golf. He was an avid Twins and Vikings fan. He liked to volunteer for area food drives. His family remembers how he enjoyed visiting with his family and friends especially on his cell phone.

Paul is survived by his siblings: Ken (Nancy) Stockland of Sunburg, Diane (Dale) Engleson of Danvers, Al Stockland (Barb Boike) of Willmar and his “Best Friend” and kidney donor Mona (Bill) Rod of Blaine; nieces: Jennifer (Trent) Nelson, Sandy Engleson, Katie Engleson; nephew Corey Hanson; great-nephews: Joshua and Jonah Nelson, Aiden King and great-niece Madison Scott and several aunts and uncles and other relatives.

Paul was preceded in death by his grandparents; parents; and sister Janice Hanson.

Hylla Louella Bergman, 95, of New London, died Saturday, August 22, 2009, at GlenOaks in New London. Her funeral will be 11:00 am, Tuesday at Hope Presbyterian Church, rural Spicer. Burial will be in Oak Hill Cemetery in New London. Visitation will be one hour prior to the service at church on Tuesday. Arrangements are with Johnson Funeral Home in New London.

Hylla was born on June 1, 1914, in Bagley, Wisconsin, the daughter of Lincoln and Carrie (Mundon) Bagley. In 1919, her family moved to New London and then to Hawick and in 1929 to Regal. She attended New London Schools for her education.

On June 25, 1936, she was united in marriage to Alfred Richard “Dick” Bergman in New London. They lived in the New London area and Hylla worked for a few years with the Presbyterian Foundation, Holiday Inn and for 12 years as a dietary aid at the Bethesda Home, retiring in 1988. In 1992 and after being on the farm for 53 years, Hylla moved into the GlenOaks Apartments.

She was a member of Hope Presbyterian Church. Her family remembers her love of visiting, sharing a cup of coffee and a cookie. Hylla enjoyed sewing, quilting, baking and traveling

Surviving are her sons, Richard (and Marcie) Bergman of Chippewa Falls, WI; John (and Jodi) Bergman of New London; six grandchildren, Brenda (and Nick) Vetter, Kirstin (and Mike) Bergman, Brian Bergman, John Eric (and Jen) Bergman, Brent Bergman and Brad Bergman and five great grandchildren, Aspen, Sage, Anna, Sara and Owen.

She was preceded in death by her parents, husband Alfred on April 12, 1969 and brothers, Dale “Stanley” and Fay Bagley.

Roger W. Bahner 65, of Roscoe, died on Wednesday night, August 19, 2009 at St. Mary’s Hospital in Rochester. A funeral service will be held at 11:00 AM on Monday, August 24, 2009, at Paynesville Lutheran Church. Burial will be at the Paynesville Cemetery. A visitation will be held on Sunday August 23, from 3-7:00 PM at the Johnson Funeral Home in Paynesville and continue one hour prior to the service at the church.

Roger William Bahner was born on July 14, 1944 in Paynesville, MN the son of Theodore and Hazel (Driver) Bahner. He grew up on the family farm in rural Eden Valley where he was baptized and confirmed into the Christian faith. Roger attended a small country school near his family farm.

On April 22, 1967 Roger was united in marriage to Betty Nelson at the Methodist Church in Paynesville. This union was blessed with two boys and four girls. Roger and Betty lived in Stewart, and Paynesville, before making their home in Roscoe in 1970. He worked for Koronis Turkey Farm in Georgeville and also Jennie-O in Litchfield before finding a home at AMPI in Paynesville. Roger loved working at AMPI and would often go in hours early to just visit with the other shift. He was planning on retiring after 36 years on September 1 of this year.

Roger enjoyed fishing, deer hunting, and watching old western movies. He loved getting together and watching WWE wrestling with his family. He adored his grandchildren and cherished being able to take them out to his favorite fishing holes.

Roger W. Bahner died on August 19, 2009 at St. Mary’s Hospital in Rochester after a lengthy battle with heart disease, he was 65. Roger is survived by his wife of 42 years Betty; children, Trudi (Tim) Bachman of Richmond, Jeannie (Allen) Rudy of Paynesville, Wayne (Tina) Bahner of Richmond, Steve (Rae) Bahner of Waite Park, Jennifer (John) Muellner of Rice, Shannon Bahner (special friend Mark Bull) of Roscoe; 9 grandchildren, Brandon, Brent, and Alicia Bachman, Keegan, Jared, and Deandra Rudy, Matthew, Nolan and Karlee Bahner. He is also survived by his father-in-law, Bill Nelson; siblings, Richard (Marian) Bahner, Robert (Darlene) Bahner, James (Cindy) Bahner, Margaret (Harold) Nohner, Onnah (John) Deuhs, Judy (Ralph) Moser, and Barb Johnson.

Roger was preceded in death by his parents Ted and Hazel, his beloved mother-in-law, Willa Dean Nelson; brother-in-law Charles Johnson.

Karine G. Rose, 84, of New London, died Wednesday morning, August 19, 2009, at GlenOaks Care Center in New London. A funeral service will be held on Saturday, August 22, 2009 at 11:00 AM at Peace Lutheran Church in New London. Burial will be at Lebanon Cemetery in New London. Visitation will be held from 5-7:00 PM on Friday, at Johnson Funeral Home in New London, and continue one hour prior to the service at the church.

Karine Gladys Rose was born March 1, 1925, in Colfax township, Minnesota. She was the daughter of Oliver and Mildred (Johnson) Larson. Karine was baptized at East Norway Lake Church and later confirmed at Lake Florida Mission Church. She attended Districts 10 and 67 elementary schools and graduated from New London High School in 1942. During World War II, Karine traveled to Seattle, Washington, where she assisted in the war effort by helping assemble Boeing B-29 bombers.

On December 9, 1944, Karine married Franklin Rose at the Lebanon Lutheran Church parsonage in New London, the town she would call home for the remaining sixty-five years of her life. For thirty-six of those years, local parents entrusted their children’s safety to Karine, who drove school bus and worked as an aide for the Peterson Bus Service and New London-Spicer Schools.

As a member of Peace Lutheran Church, Karine served monthly in the kitchen on Christian Service Day, always cherishing the fellowship. Before joining Peace, Karine was a member of Lebanon Lutheran Church. Her musical gifts were known and appreciated by many. At Lebanon, Karine sang in the choir and served as the Choir Director. She joked that she sang a thousand solos at funerals and weddings.

Karine was preceded in death by her parents Oliver and Mildred, her sister Olive Mae, who died in infancy, and her husband Franklin. Surviving her are one brother, Clifford Larson of New London, Minnesota; two children, Linda (and Rev. Nathan) Houfek of Omaha, Nebraska, and Kenneth Rose of Willmar, Minnesota; seven grandchildren, Hans, Karl, and Paul Houfek, and Matthew, Luke, Mary, and John Rose; and five great-grandchildren.
Only six weeks before passing away, Karine met her great-grandchild and namesake, six-month-old Sarah Karine Rose.

Karine Gladys Rose died August 19, 2009. May choirs of angels greet her on the far side of Jordan.

Chloe Ann Denison, age 79, died on Friday, August 7, 2009 at Rice Memorial Hospital in Willmar. Memorial service will be 11am Wednesday at Vinje Lutheran Church in Willmar. Burial will be at Cloverleaf Cemetery in Willmar. Visitation will be from 5-7 pm on Tuesday at Harvey Anderson Funeral Home in Willmar and continue one hour prior to the service at the church on Wednesday. Memorial preferred to the American Cancer Society

Chloe Ann Denison was born on March 4, 1930 in Harvey, North Dakota, the daughter of Jake P. and Helen (Anderson) Smith. She moved with her family to various towns in North Dakota and graduated from Valle City High School in the class of 1948. She was united in marriage to Richard Phillip Stovern in October of 1950 in Valley City. The couple lived in South Dakota, North Dakota and Mankato, Minnesota and settled in Willmar in 1960. Three children where blessed in this union. Richard passed away in 1963. Chloe continued to live and work in Willmar as a secretary for various businesses and later began working for the Willmar Public School offices. She was united in marriage to Robert Denison on November 9, 1972 at Vinje Lutheran Church in Willmar. The couple lived in Willmar and later spent the winter months in Mesa, Arizona after retiring in 1982. Robert passed away on January 24, 2000. Chloe continued to live in Arizona and would spend the summer months in Willmar with her family.

She was baptized in Martin, ND and confirmed her faith in Jamestown, ND. She was a member of Vinje Lutheran Church in Willmar. She was also a member Benevolent Patriotic Order of D.O.E.S.

Chloe enjoyed playing golf, reading, knitting, and spending time with her family and friends at the lake. She and Robert enjoyed spending time at their cabin on Eagle Lake, and traveling. Her family remembers the numerous Sunday dinners they would share together.

Chloe died on Friday, August 7, 2009 at Rice Memorial Hospital in Willmar surrounded by her family after a short battle with cancer. She is survived by her children Barbara (Jerome) Johnson of Willmar, Richard Stovern, and Debra (Randy) Klein of Willmar; five grandchildren: Amy (Jason) Morin, Chris Johnson all of Harpswell, Maine, Peter (Ashley) Johnson of Lake Lillian, Kari Klein and Brian Klein both of Willmar; and three great-grandchildren Riley, Addison and Carli Morin. She is also survived by her sister, Pat Moug of Eden Prairie and nephew Kevin (Jean) Moug and their children Lauren and Erin of Fargo, ND.

In addition to her husbands; she was preceded in death by her parents.

Donald W. Danielson, age 87 of New London died on Thursday, August 6, 2009 at Rice Memorial Hospital in Willmar. Funeral service will be 11:00am on Monday at the Evangelical Free Church of Willmar. Burial will be at the Lake Florida Mission Cemetery in rural New London with Military Honors provided by American Legion Post #167. Visitation will be from 5-7pm on Sunday at Harvey Anderson Funeral Home in Willmar and will continue one hour prior to the service at the church on Monday.

Donald William Danielson was born on April 22, 1922 in Willmar, Minnesota the son of William Emanuel and Anna (Olson) Danielson. He grew up in Willmar where he graduated from Willmar High School in the class of 1940. He began working with the Burlington Northern Railroad as a machinist. Donald enlisted in the United States Navy in April of 1943. He was stationed on the USS Herald of the Morning in the South Pacific. He received an Honorable Discharge in April of 1946. Donald returned to Willmar where he continued to work for the railroad. He was united in marriage to Lorraine Fremberg on August 2, 1947 at the Lebanon Lutheran Church in New London. The couple lived in Willmar and Donald later worked for Fuller Brush and sold Sun Life Insurance. In 1959 the family moved to rural New London where Donald began farming. He also worked for the Minnesota Highway Department and in 1967 became a rural mail carrier retiring in 1984.

Donald was baptized and confirmed at the First Covenant Church in Willmar. He was a member of New London Covenant Church where he was active as a Sunday school teacher, board member and chairman of the building committee. Donald was currently a member of the Evangelical Free Church in Willmar and served on the Elder Board, and as an adult Sunday School teacher, and small group leader.

Donald was a committed volunteer at the Prairie Woods Environmental Learning Center in rural New London, and was a member of American Legion Post #537.

Donald enjoyed being outdoors whether hunting, fishing, gardening, or planting trees. He loved to spend time with his grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Family was very important to Donald and he cherished the time he could spend with them.

On Thursday, August 6, 2009, Donald died at Rice Memorial Hospital in Willmar at the age of 87 years. He is survived by his wife Lorraine Danielson; children: Gary (and Lynnette) Danielson; Deb (and Donald) Schmitzerle all of New London; and daughter Carol Danielson of Willmar; seven grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren: Nathan (Tracy) Danielson and their children Grace, Olivia and Aubrey of Belvidere, IL, Eric (Amy Marie) Danielson and children Sophia and Caleb of Amery, WI, Joel (Amy Sue) Danielson and children William and Susannah of Willmar, Jedd (Sarah) Danielson of Bothell, WA, Michael Danielson, Megan Schmitzerle and Grant Schmitzerle all of New London; and two great-grandchildren on the way. Donald is also survived by his sister, Doris (Ardell) Loven of Willmar; brother, Ed (Norma) Danielson of Brooklyn Park; brother-in-law Albin (Lilly) Skogstad of Kerkhoven; sisters-in-law JoAnn Danielson of Willmar and and Dixie Danielson of Spring, TX; and several nieces, nephews and other relatives.

He was preceded in death by his parents and brothers: Kenneth and John; and sister Mildred.

Joseph B. Olson, 80, of Belgrade, died on Wednesday, August 5, 2009, at the Belgrade Nursing Home. A funeral service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Wednesday August 12, 2009 at Big Grove Lutheran Church in rural Belgrade. Burial will be in the church cemetery.
Visitation will be held on Tuesday night from 5-7:00 p.m. at Big Grove Lutheran Church, and continue one hour prior to the service.

Joseph B. Olson was born April 15, 1929 in Brooten to Palmer and Olga (Baalson) Olson. He was baptized May 15, 1929 and confirmed May 23, 1943 by the late Rev. Edward Struxness, in the Big Grove Church where he was a life member.

He attended the Brooten Public Schools K-12, graduating on June 4, 1947. The next four years of college were spent in Northfield, MN., where he graduated with a B.A. Degree from St. Olaf College, June 4, 1951, with a major in Public School Music, with minors in Biology and History.

During the school year 1951-1952 he taught Elementary, Junior High, and Senior High vocal and instrumental music in the Paynesville Public Schools.

In the fall of 1952 he began teaching Elementary, Junior High, and Senior High vocal and instrumental music and continued to teach in the Sacred Heart Public School System until his retirement, May 29, 1984. During the final six years he was also a part of the Pairing and Sharing program with the Renville Public Schools.

Additional graduate study was done at the McPhail College of Music, Mpls.; University of North Dakota, International Peace Garden Camp; and Bemidji State University.

He held membership in the following educational organizations: Minnesota Educators Assn. 1951-1984, Life Membership in The National Education Assn., American Choral Directors Assn., the Sacred Heart Education Assn., and the Renville –Sacred Heart Education Assn.

Highlights of his 33 year teaching career included being nominated Minnesota “Teacher of the Year in 1968. Nominated by the late Supt. Bruce Carlson to “Leaders of American Secondary Education” 1972. Having two High School Yearbooks dedicated to him, including “The 1961 Viking”, of Sacred Heart and “The 1984 Raider”, which was the Renville-Sacred Heart year book. A proclamation by the Sacred Heart City Council that Sunday, April 29, 1984 was to be “Joseph Olson Day” , with a special open house at the high school.

In addition to his school activities, Joe served as the Senior Choir Director at Our Saviors Lutheran Church in Sacred Heart for nineteen years. After his retirement from teaching he moved back to his original home in Brooten where he made use of his tenor voice by singing in the church choir at Grace Lutheran Church in Belgrade directed by his brother Phil. He continued singing until failing health required him to move to Glen Oaks in New London and finally to the Belgrade Nursing Home.

Survivors include brother and sister-in-law Phil and Lucille Olson of Belgrade, nieces Judy (Joe) Bayer of Annandale and Carol Fadness of Apple Valley, and nephew Keith (Ruth) Olson of Madison Lake. Great nieces and nephews Holly Bayer, Jon (Zsuzsa) Bayer, Steve (Shannon) Bayer, Tara Pliego, Courtney Fadness, Melissa Olson and Phil Olson. Great-great nieces and nephews Joseph, Madeleine, Charlie, Zachary, Lucas, Brayden, and Yesenia.

He was preceded in death by his parents, infant brother Rudolph, and great-great niece Zeya Lily.

James R. Fostervold 86, of Willmar, died on Tuesday at his home following an illness. His service will be 10:30 am on Saturday at the Evangelical Free Church in Willmar with interment at Cloverleaf Cemetery. Friends may call on Friday from 5 until 7 pm at Harvey Anderson Funeral Home and on Saturday 1 hour prior to services at the church.

James Russell Fostervold was born in Litchville, North Dakota on December12, 1922, to Ole and Inga (Olson) Fostervold. James was eighth out of a family of eleven children. In February 1928, when James was five years old, the family moved to Willmar, Minnesota. They lived in Willmar until 1932,
when they moved to the farm north of Willmar. James loved farming and in 1943, he purchased the farm from his parents.

On October 19, 1943 he joined the Army, serving with the 4th Infantry Division, 12th Infantry Regiment, 3rd Battalion (Company E 112th Infantry), fighting in the Battles and Campaigns at Normandy, Northern France,
Ardennes, Rhineland and Central Europe in World War II, and serving until November 19, 1945. While in the service, he was awarded two Silver Stars and one Bronze Star for bravery. He also received the Army Good Conduct Medal, World War II Victory Medal, European-African-Middle Eastern Theater
Service Medal, D-Day Medal, and Battle of the Bulge Medal. His unit was also awarded the French Croix de Guerre Medal and a French commemorative medal for Operation Overlord. James rose to the rank of sergeant. After returning home, he started to farming. On January 3, 1948, James was united in marriage to Roma Anderson at Webster, South Dakota . To this union four children were born. Farming was
his life. He especially enjoyed raising cattle, which he did until the last cattle were sold July 30, 2009. He actively pursued his career, farming his own land and renting many different farms over the years, until two years ago.

He is survived by his wife, Roma; his children, Mark (and Karen) Fostervold of Jarrettsville, MD; Tim (and Carol) Fostervold and Jon (and Annette) Fostervold all of Willmar; and Mary (and Steve) Hanson, of Hawthorne, NC; seven grandchildren, and three great grandchildren. He is also survived by
five sisters and one brother; Helen Berg, Harriet Backlund, Esther ( and Louis) Hanson, Wayne "Pinky" (and Wanda ) Fostervold, all of Willmar , Opal Leif of Owatonna, MN and Ruth Westphal of Cranberry Isles, Maine, along with many nieces and nephews.

He has been preceded in death by his parents Ole and Inga Fostervold, by a grandson Jeremiah, who died on March 25, 1996, at age 19; two brothers, Leif and Harold, two sisters, Sigrid Eliason and Mildred Eliason Hanson.

Glenda C. Johnson, age 96 of Minneapolis, formerly of New London, died Sunday, August 02, 2009 at Ebenezer Care Center in Minneapolis. Funeral services will be 2:00 p.m. Friday, August 7, 2009 at the Johnson Funeral Home in New London. Visitation will be one hour prior to the services. Burial will be in Lebanon Cemetery in New London.

Glenda Catherine Johnson was born September 17, 1912, near Rhame, North Dakota, the daughter of Darwin and Anne (Larson) Johnson. Following her early childhood her family returned to the family farm in Colfax Township. At a very young age she was helping on the farm. She attended grade school in district ten and continued her education at Morris Agriculture High School. In 1938, the family moved to Willmar and she worked various jobs in the grocery business. At the start of WW II she moved to Seattle, WA with a friend and worked for Boeing Aircraft. After the war she returned to Minneapolis and worked at Honeywell until her retirement. Following retirement she traveled to numerous foreign countries. She returned to Willmar and cared for her parents as their health declined. After they passed away she returned to Minneapolis and was active as a volunteer at Abbot Northwestern Hospital. As her health failed she lived at Ebenezer Care Center in Minneapolis until her death on August 2, 2009 at the age of 96.

Glenda is survived by son, Dean (Nancy) Johnson of Roseville; two grandsons, Christopher Johnson of Phoenix, AZ and Peter (Laura) Johnson of Lakeville; two great-granddaughters, Presley and Payton; sisters, Lila Evans of Willmar, Laura Lou Sandstrom of Golden Valley and brother, James Johnson of Spicer; sister-in-law, Opal Johnson of New London and numerous nieces and nephews.

Glenda was preceded in death by her parents, two brothers and two sisters.

Urban L. Loch, age 85 of Belgrade, died Sunday, August 02, 2009 at the Belgrade Nursing Home. Mass of Christian Burial will be 11:00 a.m. Thursday, August 6, 2009 at St. Francis deSales Catholic Church in Belgrade. Visitation will be 4 – 8 p.m. Wednesday at the church, where there will be a 7:30 p.m. Parish prayer service. Visitation will continue on Thursday for one hour prior to the service. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Funeral arrangements are with the Johnson Funeral Home in Belgrade.

Urban Leo Loch was born on March 23, 1924 in Freeport, the son of Joseph G. and Clara (Linn) Loch. He grew up in the Belgrade area, where he attended country grade school and Belgrade High School. On May 5, 1947, Urban was united in marriage to Dorothy Jaeger at St. Margaret’s Catholic Church in Lake Henry. They made their home in Lake Henry until 1954 when they moved to Belgrade, where they farmed. They retired in 1996 and moved into Belgrade. Together they were able to share in 62 years of marriage.

Urban enjoyed playing cards, fishing, farming, looking at the crops, visiting with family and friends, playing pull tabs and slot machines and ice fishing. His family was very important to him and was the center of his life.

Urban died on Sunday, August 2, 2009 at the Belgrade Nursing Home at the age of 85. He is survived by his wife, Dorothy Loch of Belgrade; children, LaVonne (Walter) Spanier of Paynesville, Gary (Diane) Loch of Shoreview, Renee Lock of Vadnais Heights, Bernice Lock of Plymouth, Rick (Tammy) Lock of Barrett, Joe Lock of Seattle, WA, Ken (Deanna)Lock of St. Michael, Alan (Michelle) Loch of Belgrade and Mary (Bill) Jacob of Shoreview; 17 grandchildren; 8 great-grandchildren and sister Alverna (Ray) Welle of Spring Hill.

Urban was preceded in death by his great-grandson, Benjamin; four brothers, Herbert, Eugene, Elmer, and Victor and two sisters, Lucille and Irene.

Charles M. Schleper, age 75 of Paynesville, died Sunday, August 2, 2009 at the Paynesville Area Hospital. Mass of Christian Burial will be 11:30 Wednesday, August 5, 2009 at St. Louis Catholic Church in Paynesville. Visitation will be 4- 8 p.m. Tuesday at the Johnson Funeral Home in Paynesville, where there will be 7:30 parish prayer service. Visitation will continue on Wednesday for one hour prior to the services at the church. Entombment will be in the St. Louis Parish Mausoleum.

Charles “Charlie” Michael Schleper was born on Sept 19, 1933 in Paynesville, the son of Gerhard and Catherine (Jaeger) Schleper. He grew up on the family farm between Paynesville and Lake Henry and attended Paynesville High School graduating in 1950. After his schooling he worked for NSP until 1955 when he entered the Unites States Army, serving his country for 2 years. On Oct 8, 1960, Charlie was united in marriage to Eileen Ann Spanier in Lake Henry. They made their home in Mankato and various communities in the five state area while he worked for NSP. They returned to Paynesville in 1965 where they farmed until 1990. While in retirement he continued to work at Ampi and at his daughter’s daycare. Together, Charlie and Eileen were able to share in 42 years of marriage before Eileen’s death on May 12, 2003.

Charlie was a member of St. Louis Catholic Church where he attended faithfully to the Saturday evening mass. He enjoyed going for drives and checking out the crops, attending sporting events, watching the twins, being a daycare grandpa and spending time with his grandchildren and family.

Charlie died peacefully on Sunday morning, August 2, 2009 surrounded by his seven children and nephew Pat Olberding at the Paynesville Area Hospital at the age of 75. He is survived by his children, Roxy Moser of Paynesville, Pat (Brenda) Schleper of Paynesville, Dean (Kerry) Schleper of Paynesville, Doug (Jill) Schleper of Paynesville, Peg (Greg) Stang of Rockville, Lee Schleper of Paynesville and Terri (Kirk) Athmann of Paynesville; fourteen grandchildren, Jen, Steph, Sam, Ben, Jordan, Brandon, Molly, Olivia, Emily, Kendra, Max, Charlie, John and Mitchell; two great-grandchildren, Ethan and Luke; and two sisters, Adeline (Pete) Holper of Paynesville and Mary Hagen of Lino Lakes.

Charlie was preceded in death by his wife, Eileen; son-in-law, Joe Moser and his parents.

Hazel Winona Wells, 93 of Willmar died on Sunday July 26th at Rice Memorial Hospital. Memorial services will be held on Saturday August 15th at 3:00 pm at the United Methodist Church in Willmar. Friends may call 1 hour prior to services at the church. Interment will be held on Sunday August 16th at 2:00 pm at Sioux City Memorial Park, Sioux City, Iowa. Arrangements are with Harvey Anderson Funeral Home.

Hazel Winona (Larsen) was born on April 17, 1916, in Winner, South Dakota, the daughter of Fred W. and Amanda (Hamilton) Larsen. She attended district school in Tripp County, South Dakota and graduated from Winner High School in 1934.

On November 7, 1936, Hazel was united in marriage to H. Dean Wells at the Methodist Church parsonage in Pender, Nebraska. This union was blessed with four children. They lived in Sioux City, Iowa until 1951, when they moved to Storm Lake, Iowa, prior to moving to Omaha, Nebraska for a short time. In the summer of 1956, they moved to Willmar. H. Dean preceded her in death on March 19, 1974. Hazel continued to live in Willmar and worked as a food service supervisor for the Willmar Community College, retiring in 1983.

Hazel was a member of the United Methodist Church in Willmar at the time of her death.

Surviving are her children, Barbara Jean ( and Jim) Lydon, of Port Angeles, WA; Janis Marie( and Alton) Humphrey of Lynn Haven, FL; Paul Eugene (and Susan) Wells of New London; and Fred Dean (and Kathy) Pine, CO; nine grandchildren and 27 great grandchildren. Also surviving is her sister-in-law, Babe Larsen, Mesa AZ.

In addition to her husband H. Dean, Hazel was preceded in death by her parents and one brother.


Judy P. Rude, age 59 of Belgrade, died Sunday morning, July 26, 2009 at her home in rural Belgrade. Funeral services will be 11:00 a.m. Thursday, July 30, 2009 at Crow River Lutheran Church in rural Belgrade. Burial will be in the Methodist Cemetery in Belgrade. Visitation will be 5 – 8 p.m. Wednesday at Crow River Lutheran Church and for one hour prior to the services at the church. Arrangements are with the Johnson Funeral Home in Belgrade.

Judy Pearl Rude was born on April 9, 1950 in Big Fork, MN, the daughter of Claude and Lois (Parrish) Ward. She grew up in Northern Minnesota where she attended grade school. After her schooling she was united in marriage to Terrance Wilkey. To this union two daughters and a son were born. They made their home in Bovey and later divorced. In 1981, Judy was united in marriage to Cecil Rude. They made their home in Brooten and later divorced. Judy worked for Jennie-O and later the Belgrade Nursing Home as a nurse’s aid. In 1988 she met Marv Struthers and they have lived on his farm north of Belgrade together since 1996.

Judy enjoyed playing bingo, attending garage sales, taking care of and spending time with her grandchildren and watching her bird feeders and flower gardens.

Judy died on Sunday, July 26, 2009 at her home near Belgrade at the age of 59. She is survived by her special friend and companion, Marv Struthers of Belgrade; children, Kerri Waller of Belgrade, Terri Ann Wilkey of Hibbing and John Wilkey of Chokio; two step-daughters, Gail Wilkey Diez of Wyoming, MN and Jen Alden of Wisconsin; ten grandchildren; and sister, Claudia (Carl) Wohlsdorf of Grand Rapids.

Judy was preceded in death by her parents and brother, Claude Ward.

Margaret Mae Leaf, 84, of Willmar, died Wednesday, July 15, 2009 at Rice Memorial Hospital in Willmar. Her funeral will be 10:30 am, Saturday, July 18, 2009 at Redeemer Lutheran Church in Willmar. Burial will be in Fairview Cemetery. Visitation will be from 5-7 pm, Friday at Harvey Anderson Funeral Home in Willmar and continue one hour prior to service at the church on Saturday.

Margaret was born on July 10, 1925, in Redwood Falls, MN, the daughter of Oscar and Lillian (Walter) Marks. Her family moved to Willmar where she spent her childhood, attending Willmar Public Schools, graduating in 1943. She attended a Business College in Minneapolis and worked in California as a “Rosie the Riveter” during WW II, before returning to Willmar.

In 1950, Margaret was united in marriage to Roger “Doc” Garman. Following their marriage, they lived in Willmar. She worked as a waitress for John’s Supper Club and the Elks. She also was a secretary for Dr. Hinderaker and Willmar Credit Bureau. On January 3, 1964, she was united in marriage to Roland Leaf in Webster, SD. Margaret and Roland continued to live in Willmar.

She was an active member of the Fraternal Order of Eagles Aerie #2334 Auxiliary, serving as secretary for many years. Margaret enjoyed playing Yahtzee, Scrabble and especially, Bingo. Throughout all of her struggles, all who knew her will remember her faith, determination, enthusiasm and sense of humor.

Surviving are her husband, Roland of Willmar; children, Ginger (and David) Akerson of Tower, MN; Kim Garman of Duluth; Karen (and Jody) Patten of Casa Grande, AZ; Kristin (and Brian) Schlegel of Blomkest; six grandchildren, Jason (and Mandy) Akerson, Jarin (and Nathan) Houdek, Kyle (and Kimberly) Patten, Jesika (and Matthew) Baker, Kaitlin and John Schlegel; seven great grandchildren, Kaden, Beau, Livia, Curtis, Madasyn, Tyler and Rhian. Also surviving is her brother, Robert Marks of Beauford, NC; brother-in-law, Adolph Hipp of Willmar; and sisters-in-law, Dorothy Marks of Ottawa, IL and Millie Marks of Spring Valley, CA.

Her parents, brothers, Walter and Lyle Marks; sisters, Doris Mattson and Lois Hipp, preceded her in death.

JaneAnne Baumann, age 63 of Willmar, died on Wednesday, July 15, 2009 at Rice Memorial Hospital in Willmar. Mass of Christian Burial will be 1:30pm on Monday at the Church of St. Mary in Willmar. Burial will be at St. Mary’s Cemetery in Willmar. Visitation will be Sunday from 5-7pm with a 6:30pm prayer service at Harvey Anderson Funeral Home in Willmar and will continue one hour prior to the service at the church on Monday.

JaneAnne Baumann was born on October 11, 1945 in Willmar, Minnesota, the daughter of Emil and Isabelle (Lewis) Carlson. She grew up in Willmar where she attended Willmar Public School. She was united in marriage to Gregory Baumann on August 24, 1963 at the Church of St. Mary in Willmar. This union was blessed with five children. The couple lived in Clara City and in 1972 moved to the family farm in rural Willmar. Jane was a homemaker and work part time for Molenaar’s Plastic and waited tables.

Jane was baptized and confirmed at the Church of St. Mary in Willmar where she was a life long member. She was also a member of the Willmar Order of the Eagles Aerie #2334, and a member of the Willmar American Legion Auxiliary.

Jane enjoyed crocheting, gardening tomatoes and herbs. She liked to take trips; going to Washington and Mexico to visit friends and family. She also enjoyed spending time with her family especial by a lake. Jane was very proud of the fact that her great-uncle’s descendent was the author of Sweden’s National Anthem.

Jane died on Wednesday, July 15, 2009 at the Rice Memorial Hospital in Willmar. She is survived by her children Scott Baumann (Pam) of New London, Cheryl Baumann (Chris), Patricia Bauman (Rob), Theresa Baumann (Dan) all of Willmar; 13 grandchildren and 9 great-grandchildren and one on the way. She is also survived by her sisters Elizabeth Zwart of Pennock, Herbert (Diane) Carlson of Wahpeton, ND, Gwendolyn (and Clifford) May of Osage, MN and several nieces, nephews and other relatives.

Jane was preceded in death by her parents, husband in 2006; sister Jeanette; and infant son Gregory Paul.

The Rev. Palmer E. Sevig, 82, died July 10, 2009 at Westview Village in Willmar. His funeral will be 11:00 a.m., Friday, July 17, 2009 at the Evangelical Free Church of Willmar. Burial will be at Calvary Cemetery. Visitation will be one hour prior to the service on Friday. Arrangements are with the Harvey Anderson Funeral Home in Willmar.

Palmer Edward Sevig was born Sept. 10, 1926 in North Dakota, the son of Peder and Anna (Halverson) Sevig. He grew up in Minot, ND and was a World War II veteran. He graduated from Augsburg College and Seminary in Minneapolis and married Shirley Lee in Minneapolis on June 21, 1954. Rev. Sevig was ordained in 1953, and served parishes in New London, Fergus Falls, Harrison, and Hawick in Minnesota; Anamosa, Strawberry Point, and Rockford in Iowa and in Wallace, SD. He retired in 1991.

While serving Zion Lutheran Church in Fergus Falls, Rev. Sevig enjoyed speaking regularly on the Morning Watch radio program, sponsored by the Lutheran churches of Fergus Falls. He was a member of community organizations where he lived, including the Lions Club and Kiwanis Club.

Rev. Sevig enjoyed reading, gardening, and traveling. A highlight of his travels was a trip to Norway with his family in 1975, during which he met relatives, saw the beautiful country in which they lived, and met Sen. Hubert Humphrey outside a ship museum. Following his retirement he continued to preach in churches and became involved in church and community groups throughout the Willmar area. Always one to stay active, when he could no longer drive a car he rode a bicycle to get to places in Willmar. He enjoyed spending time with his sons, daughters-in-law, and his two grandchildren. Palmer enjoyed recent vacations with his grandchildren which included swimming, fishing and Monopoly marathons.

Survivors include his sons, Lee (and Priscilla) of Brighton, MA, Todd (and Sharon) and two grandchildren, Mara and Joseph, all of Ann Arbor, MI; his brother, Arthur “Art” (and Alpha) Sevig; and his sister, Martha Rovenko both of Minot, ND; and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers, two sisters, and his wife, Shirley.

Charles A. Kneisl, age 76 of Kerkhoven, died on Monday, July 13, 2009, at Bethesda Heritage Center in Willmar. Mass of Christian burial will be 10:30am on Saturday at the Church of St. Mary’s in Willmar. Visitation will be from 5-7pm on Friday at Harvey Anderson Funeral Home in Kerkhoven with a vigil service at 7pm. Visitation will continue one hour prior to the service at the church in Willmar on Saturday. Burial will be at a later date.

Charles “Charlie” Anthony Kneisl was born on May 14, 1933, in Bluffton, Minnesota, the son of John and Clara (Price) Kneisl. He grew up in the Bluffton Wadena area where he attended country school. At a young age, he began working a milk route and later enlisted in the United States Army. He served his country from 1953 during the Korean Conflict receiving an Honorable Discharge in 1955. He was united in marriage to Carolyn Drier on October 5, 1957 in Plum City, Wisconsin. Charlie received his mechanical training at a technical school in Fargo, ND. The couple then moved to Ellsworth, WI, Zumbrota, MN, Waldport, OR, and Long Lake, MN. They settled in Kerkhoven, MN in 1973 where Charlie became a partner at Kerkhoven Ford Tractor. He later opened his own shop, Chuck’s Welding and Repair. Due to health reasons he entered the nursing home in 2004.

Charlie was a member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Willmar where he was active in the Knights of Columbus. He was a member of the Brendon-Johnson American Legion Post# 223 and the Town and Country Club in Kerkhoven.

Charlie worked hard his whole life and in his free time he enjoyed pitching horseshoes and playing Pinochle. He enjoyed spending time with his family fishing and camping.

On Monday, July 13, 2009, Charles died at the Bethesda Heritage Center in Willmar at the age of 76 years. he is survived by his wife of 52 years: Carolyn of Kerkhoven; children William (and Mary) Kneisl of Maynard, Dick (and Deb) Kneisl of Kerkhoven, Cynthia Kneisl of Stillwater, Patricia (and Brian) Cohn of Northfield, James (and Kim) Kneisl of Delano; ten grandchildren: Andy, Nicole and Elizabeth Terveer, Gary (and Holly), Kristi and Brad Kneisl, Kayla and Allison Kneisl, Kevin Kneisl, and Sophie Hannig; one great-grandchild on the way; sisters: Annette Lancaster of Verndale, Margaret Hammerschmidt of Alexandria, Marie (and Jack) King of Sherman, TX, Bernadine Boecker of Grey Eagle; and brother John (and Reatha) Kneisl of Minneapolis.

Charles was preceded in death by his parents and sister, Rita Kneisl.

Adam Carl Hoekstra, 23, of Farmington, died Friday at Fairview Ridges Hospital in Burnsville. His funeral will be 11:00 am, Tuesday, July 14, 2009 at Faith Lutheran Church in Spicer. Burial will be in Spicer City Cemetery. Visitation will be from 5-7 pm at the church on Monday and continue one hour prior to the service on Tuesday. Arrangements are with Johnson Funeral Home in New London.

Adam was born on September 19, 1985, in Willmar, Minnesota, the son of Lloyd and Debra (Nord) Hoekstra. He grew up in Spicer and graduated from New London-Spicer High School in 2004. He enjoyed playing football and golf while in high school. He continued his education at North Dakota State University in Fargo, graduating with a double major in Communications and Public Relations in 2008.

On October 25, 2008, he was united in marriage to Alyssa Wilson at Faith Lutheran Church in Spicer. They lived in Apple Valley following their marriage and just recently bought a home in Farmington. Adam was a Regional Director for Ducks Unlimited. Adam often said, “I’ve got the best job.”

Adam was an avid outdoorsman, enjoying hunting and fishing. He had a great sense of humor and his constant positive attitude could always lift people up. Adam was always thinking of others and their feelings and willing to help at all cost.

Surviving are his wife, Alyssa; their “black lab child”, Avree Perfection; his parents, Lloyd and Deb Hoekstra of Spicer; brother, Nathan (and fiancée, Amber Borka) of Spicer; mother and father-in-law, Jim and Cathy Wilson of Spicer; and brother-in-law, Elijah Wilson of Spicer.

His grandparents preceded him in death.

Evelyn Clarice Krueger, 93, of Willmar, died Monday, July 06, 2009 at Bethesda Heritage Center in Willmar. Her funeral will be 2:00 pm, Friday, July 10, 2009 at Assembly of God in Willmar. Burial will be in Cloverleaf Cemetery. Visitation will be on Thursday from 5-7 pm at Harvey Anderson Funeral Home in Willmar and continue one hour prior to the service at church.

Evelyn was born on April 3, 1916, at the Swift County Hospital in Benson, MN, the daughter of Christian Lee and Inga (Peterson) Lee. She grew up north of Benson in the Lake Hassel area, graduating from Benson High School in 1934. She continued her education at North Central Bible College. She worked at the Chase Hotel in Walker during the summer breaks from college.

On September 18, 1940, she was united in marriage to Orville Krueger at the Assembly of God. They lived in a Cape Cod style home that Orville had built in Willmar until they bought a farm south of Kandiyohi. While they farmed, Evelyn also worked as a cook for a number of years at Champlin Café and Bethesda Heritage. In 1979, when they retired, they sold the farm and returned to Willmar.

Orville and Evelyn were charter members of the Assembly of God. Their faith was evident in all that they did. Evelyn enjoyed being a hostess and entertaining her family and friends at their home. Whether it was a reunion, a birthday party, Christmas or just coming over to visit, her sweets, ice cream, apple pies and oh yes, coffee, were always ready. She enjoyed handiwork, cross-stitching, latch hooking, quilting and loved to garden.

Surviving are her children, Gary (and Ann) Krueger of Willmar; Valerie (and Dr. Philip) McLeod of Phoenixville, PA; Gaylan (and Cindy) Krueger of Willmar; Patricia (and Rev. Steve Quernemoen of Elbow Lake; Dayton (and Kathy) Krueger of Willmar; her grandchildren, Leah (and fiancé, Tim Schreder), Richard and Sara Krueger, Sharalee and Joshua McLeod, Krista (and Michael) Dufault, Ryan Krueger, Joseph, Jeremy, Sam, Stephanie and Jonathan Quernemoen, Ryan (and Molly) Lind, Jasmine and Blake Krueger and great grandchildren, Paige Weiss, Nate, Noah and Iris Lind. Also surviving is her brother, Chester Lee of Benson.

Preceding her in death were her parents, step-mother, Edyth Nelson; husband, Orville on November 16, 1997; her infant grandson, Benjamin Quernemoen; and her sisters, Josie Adamson, Lillian Syverson and Irene Edberg.

Leon Gale Hovland, 64,of Maynard and Willmar, died Monday, July 6, 2009 at his home surrounded by his family. His service will be 10:00 am, Friday at Vinje Lutheran Church in Willmar. Burial will be 3:30 pm, Friday at Kinkaid Cemetery in Alexandria. Visitation will be from 5:30 – 7:30 pm, Thursday at Maynard Lutheran Church in Maynard with a Prayer Service at 5:30 pm. Visitation will continue one hour prior to the service on Friday at Vinje Lutheran Church in Willmar. Arrangements are with Harvey Anderson Funeral Home in Willmar.

Leon Gale Hovland was born on May 22, 1945 to Lester and Gunhild Oma Hovland in Red Wing, Minnesota. He moved to Nelson, Minnesota at the age of 6 months. Leon and his family were actively involved in farming and community and Our Savior’s Lutheran Church in Nelson. Leon was confirmed at Our Savior’s Lutheran Church in Nelson and served as acolyte each Sunday through Junior and Senior High School. Leon attended elementary school at the Nelson School. He graduated from Jefferson High School in Alexandria, Minnesota in 1963. He was active in FFA and was a Star Farmer. Leon attended St. Cloud State University and graduated with a Bachelor’s Degree in Secondary Math Education. He taught Mathematics in the Willmar School District from 1967 to 2001. After retiring from teaching he returned to Willmar Senior High as a computer specialist. He loved teaching and working with the students. Leon received a Master’s Degree in Math Education from the University of Minnesota, Morris.

Leon married Mary Leigh Boyd Hovland at the First Congregational Church in Alexandria, MN in 1967. Leon and Mary were married for 42 years. They were blessed with three sons, Daniel, Lyle and Scott.

Leon loved spending time with his grandchildren and attending their activities. From 1967-1996 Leon was a member of Bethel Lutheran Church in Willmar, MN. He was active on the church council and chairman of the building committee. In 1996 Leon and Mary moved to Maynard, MN, where Leon was an active partner in ministry with his wife, Mary, as they served Maynard-Wang Lutheran Parish. Leon has been active in the Southwestern Minnesota Synod of the ELCA serving on the Resolutions Committee. He was an active member of Maynard Lions Club playing Santa Claus each Christmas for the children of Maynard. Leon was active on the Chippewa County Thrivent Board serving as their recorder. Leon served as Treasurer of the Willram Investment Club for many years. He was active in Boy Scouts of America serving as Scout Master of Troop 229 in Willmar for many years. During the summer months while he was teaching, Leon was a carpenter building and remodeling many homes in the area.

Leon is survived by his wife Mary, sons, Daniel (and Kristine) of Muscat Oman, Lyle (and Jill) of Willmar, MN, and Scott (and Jennifer) of Willmar, MN. Leon and Mary are blessed with seven grandchildren: Bailey, Lauren, Tate, Cameron, Avery, Cayle, and Alec; one brother, Glenn (and Alice), his sons and their families, his sister and brother-in law, Anne and Sherm Bartz, his brother-in law, Lee Boyd, his wife’s parents, Magel and Jim Boyd, and numerous cousins, aunts and uncles. He was preceded in death by his parents, Lester and Gunhild and infant brother, Loyal. Leon’s wonderful smile, sense of humor, his willingness to serve his Lord in any capacity to which he was called will be greatly missed.

Leonette “Lee” Sadler, 80 of Willmar, died on Friday at Golden Living Center in Olivia. Mass of Christian Burial will be 11:00 am Thursday, July 9th at the Church of St. Mary. Interment will be in the church cemetery. There will be a Daughters of Isabella Rosary at 4:30 pm of Wednesday and visitation will continue until 8 pm at Harvey Anderson Funeral Home and friends may also call 1 hour prior to services in Thursday at the church.

Leonette “Lee” Lorraine (Richter) was born on January 1, 1929, at St. Cloud, Minnesota, the daughter of Emil and Lucy Rassier (Lucia) Richter. She grew up in the St. Cloud and Brainerd areas graduating from Brainerd High School in 1946.

On September 17, 1949, Lee was united in marriage to Donald Sadler at Brainerd, Minnesota. This union was blessed with three children. They lived in Brainerd, Bemidji, Park Rapids and St. Cloud, prior to moving to Willmar in 1955. Lee had worked at J C Penney’s, ACMC in the insurance departments and owned and operated Lee’s Plastercraft in Willmar prior to becoming a secretary at the Church of St. Mary until her retirement in 1981. Don preceded her in death in 1984, while they were traveling in Norway.

Lee was a member of the Church of St. Mary at the time of her death, she participated in numerous activities including, singing is the Resurrection Choir, Grandma’s Attic, Greif Support Group, Daughter of Isabella, and in 1993 was awarded the Bishops Metal for her service to the church.

Following her retirement Lee volunteered to help seniors with their insurance at Rice Memorial Hospital. She served on the Food Shelf Board, was an Election Judge, helped at the Historical Society, and was a member of the Northwestern Bell Pioneer Wives. Lee attended writing classes at Ridgewater College and wrote many stories about her life. She had many of them published in the newspaper in Senior Perspectives. Her daughter Karen and Lee put these stories together and had them bound and distributed these to many of her family members.

Surviving is her children; Mary Kay (and Edward) Rhude, Spicer, Karen Forest (and Preston Larson) Vadnais Heights and Thomas (and Laurie) Sadler, Hutchinson; six grandchildren. Also surviving are her siblings; Mary Jane (and Ronald) Drach, Huntsville. AL; Robert (and Sharon) Richter, Hoyt, KS; Ellen Christianson, Lynn Richter and Laura Richter all of Brainerd.

In addition to her husband, Donald, her parents and two sisters, Anita and Doreen.

Diana F. Smid, 67 of New London, died Thursday, July 2. 2009 at her home. Her funeral will be 1:00 pm, Monday at Hope Presbyterian Church in Spicer. Burial will be in Evergreen Cemetery in George, Iowa. Visitaiton will be Sunday from 5 to 8 PM at Johnson Funeral Home in New London and continue one hour prior to service at the church.

Diana Faye Smid was born on April 9, 1942 in Lyon County, Iowa, the daughter of John E. and Gertrude (Schilling) Kruger. She grew up in Little Rock, Iowa where she graduated from high school in 1960.

On October 1, 1963, Diana was united in marriage to Larry Gene Smid in Sioux Falls, SD. Following their marriage, they lived in George, Iowa. In 1969, they moved to Dawson and in 1977 to New London, Minnesota. During their years in New London, they owned and operated Smid Accountancy and Trading Company. They were able to share in 33 years of marriage before Larry’s death on January 27, 1997. Following the death of her husband, Diana retired.

Diana was a member of Hope Presbyterian Church in Spicer where she was a member of ladies circle. In her retirement, she enjoyed gardening, sewing, quilting, baking and playing bingo. Diana especially enjoyed visiting her kids and grandchildren. Since the day her grandchildren were born, she was always lovingly referred to as “Oma Smid.” Until 2007, she was a very active member of the local ladies chapter of Ducks Unlimited, Little Crow Nesters and for several years was chairwoman of the organization. When her children were younger, she was a Cub Scout and Girl Scout leader. Diana was also a self-taught piano player and played the accordion.

Diana died July 2, 2009 at her home in New London with her family by her side at the age of 67. She is survived by children, Darla (Brad) Amundson of Houston, TX, Laura Burns of Byron, Dallas (Christine) Smid of Litchfield and Jon Smid of St. Cloud; seven grandchildren; brothers, Donald (Phyllis) Kruger of Sibley, Iowa and Darvin (Therese) Kruger of St. Cloud.

Her husband, Larry and her parents preceded Diana in death.

May Evangeline Edwards died Monday, June 22, 2009 at Glen Oaks Nursing Home in New London, MN. A memorial service celebrating her life will be held on Sunday, July 26, 2009, from 1:00-4PM at the Soltvedt Residence, 21296 Jarvis St., Elk River, MN.

May was born May 1, 1922 in Madison, SD. She was the daughter of Lulu and George McKinney. She grew up in Madison, SD. Later, she attended and graduated from nursing school at Sprague Hospital in Huron, SD, on June 1, 1943. She met Neal Edwards and they were married in 1943. She moved to Minnesota in 1981.

May is survived by her children, Michael (and Susan) Edwards of Florida, Craig (and Lynn) Edwards of New London, and Barbara (and Richard) Mercurio of Utah and a sister, Zora (and Jerry) Moose of Arizona. She was a proud grandmother of 7 grandchildren, Michael, Douglas, Jacqueline, Nicholas, Daniel, Chad, and Michel. May also had 13 great grand children.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Neal; parents; daughter Kathleen, and son, George.

Florence A. Erickson, 100 , of Willmar, died Friday, June 26, 2009 at Bethesda Pleasantview in Willmar. Her funeral will be 10:00 am, Friday, July 3, 2009 at Eagle Lake Lutheran Church, rural Willmar. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Visitation will be one hour prior to service at the church on Friday. Arrangements are with Harvey Anderson Funeral Home in Willmar.

Florence Anna Erickson was born on May 3, 1909, in Green Lake Township, Kandiyohi County, Minnesota, the daughter of Ole O. and Mary Josephine (Arneson) Erickson. She graduated from Willmar High School and later took teacher’s training in Willmar. Florence taught in Raymond and the Green Lake area. In 1934, she moved to Los Angeles, California where she worked as a housekeeper and companion for Tyrone Power’s mother and others while in California.

In 1958, Florence returned to Willmar to care for her mother. She also worked at Bethesda Heritage for fourteen years before retiring. She was a charter member of Willmar Senior Citizens and was the 2003-2004, Senior Citizen’s Queen.

Florence was an active member of Eagle Lake Lutheran, serving with the mission society and other areas in the church. She was a communion server at Bethesda Heritage for many years.

She was survived by many nieces and nephews and other family and numerous friends.

Florence was preceded in death by her parents; sister, Helen; three brothers, Fred, Walter and Clarence; and her special friend, Al Pierson.

George W. Wicklund, 82, of Spicer, died on Saturday, June 27, 2009, at Rice Memorial Hospital in Willmar. The funeral service will be held at 11:00 AM on Thursday, July 2, 2009, at Faith Lutheran Church in Spicer. Burial will be at the Spicer City Cemetery. A visitation will be held on Wednesday night, from 5-8 PM at Faith Lutheran Church in Spicer, and continue one hour prior to the services at the church on Thursday. Funeral arrangements are entrusted to Johnson Funeral Home in New London.

George Warren Wicklund was born on December 20, 1926, on the family farm in Lake Lillian, the son of Henry and Nora (Olson) Wicklund. He grew up on the farm and received his education at a small country school. He worked on the farm until he was a young adult when he moved to Willmar and began working for Sears. On June 19th 1954, George was united in marriage to Joan Liestman at the Evangelical United Brethren Church in Paynesville. This union was blessed with three sons and a daughter. The family made their home in Willmar until 1962 when they moved to George Lake in rural Spicer. George worked for Sears for over 30 years until the store closed. He finished his career working for Nationwide Paint until his retirement in 1988.

George was a member of Faith Lutheran Church in Spicer, where he was an usher. George enjoyed watching TV, working crossword puzzles, bird watching, playing the accordion and piano, going dancing, and playing cards and board games. However, George’s favorite pastime was spending time with his grandchildren and family.

George W. Wicklund died on Saturday, June 27, 2009 at Rice Memorial Hospital in Willmar at the age of 82. George is survived by his wife of 55 years Joan; children, Bradley (partner, Bob Aigner) of Monticello, Mark (special friend, Kimberly Phillips) of Cold Spring, Randy of Willmar, Jana (Terry) Hald of Spicer; 6 grandchildren, Daniel, Bronson, and Garrett Wicklund, Ty, Toryce, and Teeyn Hald; great-granddaughter, Breonna Wicklund; and numerous nieces and nephews.

George was preceded in death by his parents, and siblings, Henning, Harris, Alton, Allen, Gene, Dana, Elizabeth, and Kendrietta.


Dorothy Ann Bloom, age 83 of Willmar died on Sunday, June 28, 2009 at Bethesda Heritage Center in Willmar. Dorothy Ann Bloom was born on April 17, 1926 in Willmar, Minnesota, the daughter of Harry and Emma (Gundershaug) Card. She grew up in Willmar and graduated from Willmar High School in the Class of 1944. She worked for a short time in Washington D.C. for the United States Department of the Navy. She was united in marriage to Robert Manley Bloom on July 2, 1944. The couple resided in Willmar where Robert worked as a conductor for the Great Northern Railroad. Dorothy was a homemaker taking care of her family and three sons.

Dorothy was a member of Bethel Lutheran Church in Willmar where she had helped in Circle. She was a member of the Willmar V.F.W. Auxiliary. She enjoyed cooking, gardening, sewing, and reading. She and Robert enjoyed traveling, and wintering in Arizona. Robert passed away on May 23, 2009, at his home in Willmar. Dorothy continued to live at her home and later entered Bethesda Heritage Center in Willmar where she passed away peacefully on Sunday, June 28, 2009, she was 83 years of age.

Dorothy is survived by her son Jeff (and Marian) Bloom of Willmar; two grandchildren: Ryan Bloom of Plymouth and Jennifer Bloom of St. Paul; sisters Marjorie Bjorndahl of Willmar, June Pluerde of Denver, CO, and Betty Dietmann of Sartell; brother-in-law Jack Bloom of Bend, OR.

In addition to her husband Robert, she was preceded in death by her parents; sons: Doug and Lee, and granddaughter Tanya Tonn Bloom.

Valborg B. Steberg, age 87 of Willmar died on Saturday, June 27, 2009 at Rice Memorial Hospital in Willmar. Funeral services will be 10:00 am on Thursday at Green Lake Free Lutheran Church in rural Spicer. Burial will be at Ft. Snelling Nation Cemetery in Minneapolis, MN on Thursday at 2:15 pm. Visitation will be from 5-7pm on Wednesday at Harvey Anderson Funeral Home in Willmar and will continue one hour prior to the service at the church on Thursday.

Valborg Bernice Steberg was born on October 28, 1921 in Mamre Township, Minnesota, the daughter of Ivar and Martha (Johnson) Hafstad, and the youngest of six children. She grew up in the Kerkhoven area, being baptized and confirmed at the Kerkhoven Lutheran Church and graduating from Kerkhoven High School.

On September 9, 1950 she was united in marriage to her dear friend and neighbor, Clifford M. Steberg. They made their home in Willmar, raised two sons, James and Steven, and celebrated 50 years of marriage.

She was currently a member of Green Lake Free Lutheran Church in rural Spicer. She was active in the church and a member of the Ladies Aide. She enjoyed quilting and sewing, working in her garden and spending time with family and friends. She especially loved and was very proud of her three grandchildren.

Clifford passed away in 2001 and Valberg continued to live in her home in Willmar. On Saturday, June 27, 2009 she passed away at the Rice Memorial Hospital in Willmar at the age of 87 years. She is survived by her sons: James Steberg of Olympia, WA, Steven (and Bev) Steberg of Blaine; and three grandchildren: Jennifer, Kacy, Eric; sister-in-law Marilyn Hafstad; and special nephews and niece: Darrell Steberg, Gary Hafstad and Mari Hafstad.

In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by her parents; four brothers: Melvin, Herman, Bernhard, Olaf and sister Margaret Vaale. Her kindness and gentle ways will always be remembered.

Marguerite C. Hanson, 60, of Willmar, died on Wednesday at Rice Memorial Hospital. Her service will be 10:30 am Saturday at Harvey Anderson Funeral Home with interment at Fairview Cemetery. Friends may call on Friday from 5 until 7 pm at Harvey Anderson Funeral Home and on Saturday one hour prior to services.

Margierite Cecilia (Huizinga) was born on May 30, 1949, at Minneapolis, Minnesota, she was the daughter of Barrold and Cecilia (Wollschlager) Huizinga. She grew up in the Ortonville and Willmar areas graduating from Willmar High School in 1967.

She was a member of the Church of St. Mary in Willmar.

Surviving are her sons; Lee Jr. (and Hope) Rudolph, Winthrop and Jeremy Rudolph of Willmar; eleven grandchildren. Also surviving is her mother, Cecilia Huizinga of Willmar; brother, Jim (and Jackie) Huizinga, Weslaco, TX; and sister; Sr. Bernita Lindstrom of Arcadia, CA.

She was preceded in death by her father.

Marie K. Croonquist, age 92 of Kandiyohi, died Saturday, June 20, 2009 at Rice Memorial Hospital in Willmar. Funeral services will be 2:00 p.m. Monday, June 22, 2009 at Tripolis Lutheran Church in rural Kandiyohi. Visitation will be held one hour prior to the services at the church. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Arrangements are with the Harvey Anderson Funeral Home in Willmar.
Marie Katherine (Erickson) Croonquist was born on May 28, 1917, in Willmar, the daughter of Carl Edward and Amanda Caroline (Noid) Erickson. She grew up in rural Willmar attending District #39 school in Fahlun Township. She graduated from Willmar High School in 1935.
On January 1, 1942, Marie was united in marriage to Arnold Croonquist at Tripolis Lutheran Church in rural Kandiyohi. They lived and farmed in Fahlun Township until 1949 at which time they moved to Kandiyohi.
She was baptized, confirmed and was a lifetime member of Tripolis Lutheran Church. She was active in the Sunday School, WELCA, Quilting Committee and various other activities in the church.
Marie was primarily a homemaker who loved to cook and bake, but she also worked part-time at various jobs throughout the years. She was a member of the Senior Citizen’s Club in Kandiyohi. She was an avid Minnesota Twins fan and she loved spending time with her family. Marie and Arnold celebrated their 67th wedding anniversary on January 1st, 2009.
On Saturday, June 20, 2009, Marie died at Rice Memorial Hospital at the age of 92 years. Surviving is her husband of 67 years, Arnold; children Karen Croonquist, Plymouth, MN; Ruth (and Craig) Aurand, Kandiyohi; grandchildren, Emily Aurand of St Paul, MN and Eric Aurand of Fargo, ND. Also surviving is her sister-in-law, Florence Erickson of Willmar and several nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents, five brothers and four sisters.
Hazelle M. Bergsten, 95, formerly of Battle Lake, died on Sunday June 14, 2009, at Bethesda Pleasantview, in Willmar, Minnesota. Arrangements are pending with Harvey Anderson Funeral Home. Her service will be at 11:00 am Friday June 19, 2009, at First Covenant Church in Willmar, MN with interment at 3:30 pm at Linnea Covenant Cemetery, Clitherall. Friends may call on Friday 1 hour prior to services at the church. Arrangements are with Harvey Anderson Funeral Home in Willmar. The family prefers Memorials to the Gideon’s.

Hazelle Margaret (Carlson) was born on January 17, 1914, in Little Falls, Minnesota to Fred and Marie (Gudmundson) Carlson. She was the second of nine children. The family lived in Cushing, Minnesota before moving to Willmar in 1930. Hazelle graduated from Willmar High School in 1932. She worked at the Willmar State Hospital for several years.

She was united in marriage to Erland A. Bergsten on May 29, 1937, in Willmar. They lived in Minneapolis for ten years while Erland worked as an auto body man and in defense work during World War II. They purchased and moved to the farm in Ottertail County near Clitherall in 1947.

Hazelle and Erland were members that helped reorganize Linnea Covenant Church, Clitherall. Hazelle served as a Sunday School Teacher and the Ladies Prayer Group in the Covenant Church and later in the Missionary Alliance Church in Battle Lake. She and Erland served the Lord with the Fergus Falls Gideon’s for many years. She was a member of First Covenant Church in Willmar at the time of her death.

Hazelle and Erland retired from the farm in 1976 and built a new home on Crane Lake. After enjoying that for nearly twenty years, they moved to Willmar in 1996. Erland preceded her in death in August 1996.

Surviving is her daughter, Sharon (and Glenn) Arfstrom of Willmar and son Richard (and Linda) Bergsten of Monticello; four grandchildren, Kari Arfstrom of St. Paul, Jon (and Melissa) Arfstrom of North Oaks, Jeff (and Tammy) Bergsten of Becker and Missy (and Daryl) Gilles of Big Lake; nine great grandchildren and foster daughter, Carol Klimek, sisters: Alyce Berglund of LaGrande, OR, Ione (Elmond) Ekblad of Willmar, Inez Oslund of Northfield, Irene Nelson of Willmar, brother: Eldon (Jo) Carlson of Willmar.

In addition to her husband Erland, she was preceded in death by her parents and three siblings.

Thelma Lindsoe, age 83, of Willmar died Thursday, June 11, 2009 at Rice Memorial Hospital in Willmar. Her memorial service will be 1:30 pm, Monday at Calvary Lutheran in Willmar. Burial will be 12:00 pm on Monday at Calvary Lutheran Cemetery in Willmar. Visitation will be one hour prior to the service at the church on Monday. Arrangements are with Harvey Anderson Funeral Home in Willmar.

Thelma Lindsoe was born on May 22, 1926, on a farm near Spicer, Minnesota, the youngest child of Ole N. and Helga (Wig) Wareberg. She was baptized and attended Sunday School at Green Lake Lutheran Church, rural Spicer. She attended school at Dist. #33 near Kandiyohi. She later moved with her family to a farm west of Willmar and attended Dist. #80 - Priam School. She was confirmed at Calvary Lutheran Church in Willmar. She graduated from Willmar High School in 1944. She was a member of the Priam Pilots 4-H Club, Rural Youth, Luther League. She loved to play guitar and sing duets with her sister, Ruth.

On June 20, 1947, she was united in marriage to Rial M. Lindsoe of Pennock. They lived their entire married life in Willmar. Three children completed their family, Jayne, Kristi and Paul. They have been members of Calvary Lutheran for many years, where Thelma served as a Sunday School teacher for 10 years, worked with the Advent Festival since it began, served on Altar Guild, sang in the choir and was a Luther League Advisor. She was also a member of the Sons of Norway and sang in the Norwegian Choir.

Thelma wrote one song (not published) entitled “I Want To Be There On That Morning When Jesus Comes Again,” and one book entitled, “Little Traveler,” about a little Canadian Goose Gosling, who came to be part of the Forsythe family at their lake home on Ennis Lake, MT. She owned and operated Thel’s Ceramic Shop for 20 years. She loved all types of crafts, most recently sewing quilts for her family was her passion. She also enjoyed flower gardening and traveling, having been to Norway twice. She loved her family dearly and cherished the time she could spend with them.

Thelma is survived by her husband Rial of Willmar; children: Jayne (Tony) Forsythe of McAllister, MT, Kristi Lindsoe (Jim Oelkers) of Becker, MN, Paul (Lori) Lindsoe of Three Forks, MT; six grandchildren: Stephanie (Jason) Vonhaden, Amanda Forsythe, Andrea Forsythe, and Shane Forsythe, Keagan and Conner Lindsoe; six great-grandchildren: Anthony and Nathan Vonhaden, Keisha Kyleigh and Isabella Forsythe, and Jayne Phelps. She is also survived by her sister Hazel Peterson of Spicer, and brother Norman (Carol) Wareberg of Westhills, CA; and several nieces, nephews and other relatives.

Thelma was preceded in death by her parents, brother Miner Wareberg, and sisters: Irene Rosenquist and Ruth Birkland.

Danny H. Ennenga, 52, of New London, died on Monday, June 8, 2009, at Rice Memorial Hospital in Willmar. A memorial service will be held on Thursday, June 11, 2009, at 2:00 p.m. at Peace Lutheran Church in New London. Burial will be held at Our Lady of the Lakes Cemetery in rural New London. A visitation will be held one hour prior to the service at the church.

Danny Harold Ennenga was born on January 17, 1957, in International Falls MN, the son of Harold R. and Katherine (Dorn) Ennenga. The family moved to Spicer where Danny attended elementary school. Danny grew up in Spicer where he graduated from New London High School with the class of 1975.

Danny made his home in Spicer. He was a jack of all trades working in many different professions including, Skyline Estates, Peterson Farms as a Tera Gator operator, carpentry work for several years, and Liebl Farms to name a few.

During Danny’s down time he enjoyed hunting, fishing, gardening and woodworking. His family will cherish all the birdhouses, windmills, planters and all the other gifts that he made for them.

Danny H. Ennenga died on Monday, June 8, 2009 at Rice Memorial Hospital in Willmar at the age of 52. He is survived by his mother, Katherine of New London; sisters, Kathy (Gary) Dahlberg of New London, Deb (Larry) Kvamso of Spicer; nieces and nephews.

Danny was preceded in death by his father, Harold and grandparents, Claus (Lena) Ennenga and Harland (Rose) Rykken.

Galen Rohne, 61 of Spicer, died Monday, June 08, 2009 at St. Cloud Hospital. Mass of Christian Burial will be 10:30 am, Friday, June 12, 2009 at Our Lady of the Lakes Catholic Church, rural Spicer. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Visitation will be Thursday from 5-7 pm at Harvey Anderson Funeral Home in Willmar with a parish prayer service at 6:30 pm. Visitation will continue one hour prior to the service at the church.

Galen was born on March 1, 1948, in Willmar, MN, the son of Evan and Darlene (Nelson) Rohne, He grew up in Willmar, although spending as much time as he could on his grandparent’s farm near Svea. Galen graduated from Willmar High School in 1966. He married Patricia Palmer and they had a son, Stacy Jon Rohne. Galen then enlisted in the United States Navy and was Honorably Discharged in 1973. He attended Southwest State College in Marshall for Business Administration. He began working for his parent’s at Northern Factory Sales in 1974.

On December 28, 1984, he was united in marriage to Carmen Bailey at Svea Lutheran Church in Svea. After 31 years, in 2005, Galen decided to retire and spend more time with his wife, Carmen and daughter, Shannon.

He loved the outdoors, hunting, fishing, restoring and collecting antique guns, an extremely hard worker and was quite the prankster. Galen enjoyed history and would always make time to visit a museum when they were on vacation. Above all, Galen was a generous and giving person with his heart, and at the center of his heart was his family.

Surviving are his wife, Carmen and daughter, Shannon of Spicer; son, Stacy (and Wanita Topal) Rohne of Redwood Falls; brother, Nathan (and Sheila) Rohne of Willmar; sister, Rosalyn (and Richard) Graver of Apple Valley; three grandchildren, Alexandra, Gage and Chalese Rohne and several nieces and nephews.

His parents preceded him in death.

Fritchof “Fritz” Aasen, age 88, of Murdock died on Sunday, June 7, 2009, at the Clara City Care Center. Funeral service will be 1:00 pm on Thursday at Calvary Lutheran Church in Willmar. Burial will be at the church cemetery. Visitation will be on Wednesday from 5-8pm at the Harvey Anderson Funeral Home in Willmar and will continue one hour prior to the service at the church on Thursday.

Fritchof “Fritz” Carl Aasen was born on January 30, 1921, in Colfax Township, Kandiyohi County, the son of Marcus and Clara (Engen) Aasen. He grew up in the New London area where he attended District 25 and District 104 country schools. He farmed with his family in the New London area. He enlisted in the United States Army in January 1945, where he served for one year during the Korean Conflict stationed in the Asiatic-Pacific Theatre. He received an Honorable Discharge on December 3, 1946. He was united in marriage to Alice Jensen on May 17, 1947, at Calvary Lutheran Church in Willmar. The couple lived and farmed in the New London / Sunburg area. Fritz later worked for Perkin’s Lumber in Willmar and for Jennie-O Foods in Willmar. Alice passed away on April 10, 1975. In 1986, Fritz retired and moved to Murdock.

He was a member of Calvary Lutheran Church in Willmar. He was also a member of the Willmar American Legion Post #167, and the Willmar Eagles Club. Fritz enjoyed woodworking, drawing, especially horses, and music. He would often attend the Terrace Fiddler’s Festival and also the Rodeo in Clear Lake, South Dakota.

Fritz is survived by his children: Linda (and Bruce) Laffen of Willmar, Donavan Aasen of New London, Marvin (and Alice) Aasen of Willmar, Nancy (and Ron) Westphal of Maple Grove, and Rosann (and Floribert) Schmitz of Roscoe; nine grandchildren; 9 great-grandchildren; sister Ruby Tjernagel of Pennock, and sister-in-law JoAnn Aasen of New London; and several nieces, nephews and other relatives.

In addition to his wife, Fritz was preceded in death by his parents, brother Harlan, daughter-in-law RuthAnn Aasen, brother-in-law Ben Tjernagel, and special friend Eva Laughlin.

Arnold S. Osmundson, age 87 of Belgrade, died Saturday, June 7, 2009 at his home in Belgrade. Funeral services will be 2:00 p.m. Thursday, June 11, 2009 at Trinity Lutheran Church in Brooten. Visitation will be held one hour prior to the services at the church. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Arrangements are with the Johnson Funeral Home in Belgrade.

Arnold Stanford Osmundson was born on Sept 25, 1921 in Hettinger, ND, the son of Oscar and Regina (Kittelson) Osmundson. He was baptized and confirmed at Hettinger Lutheran Church. He grew up on the family farm and attended school in Hettinger, graduating in 1941. On Dec. 14, 1946, Arnold was united in marriage to Odell Stolee. To this union three sons and one daughter were born. They made their home near Hettinger where they farmed until moving to Brooten in 1954. Together they were able to share in 21 years of marriage before Odell’s death on May 31, 1968. On June 27, 1971, Arnold was united in marriage to Bernadean Otto. Together they we able to share in 4 years of marriage before her death on June 21, 1975. On May 5, 1979 Arnold was united in marriage to Marie Mundahl. They lived in Brooten and Arnold retired from farming in 1987. They moved to Belgrade in 2001and were able share in 29 years of marriage before Marie’s death on May 29, 2008. Arnold was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church in Brooten
, where served on church council and taught Sunday School for over 40 years. He also served on the Glenwood Retirement Village Board for 20 years and served as a leader in Busy Beavers 4-H club.

Arnold died on Saturday, June 6, 2009, at his home in Belgrade at the age of 87. He is survived by his children, Stanford (Joan) Osmundson of Andover, Rev. Orval (Valerie) Osmundson of Inver Grove Heights, Nancy (Jeffery) Robertson of Hudson, WI, Paul (Dorothy) Osmundson of Brooten; 8 grandchildren; 6 great-grandchildren; siblings, Gladys Larson of Minneapolis, Ruth Mundschenk of Eagen and Edith Wick of Las Vegas, NV.

He was preceded in death by his wives, Odell, Bernadean and Marie; infant twin sons, James and Jerome; parents; and siblings, Margaret, Adeline and Karl.

Leo A. Hesse, 74, of Kerkhoven died Thursday at his home in Kerkhoven. Mass of Christian Burial will be 10:30 am, Monday at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Murdock. Visitation will be from 4-6:00 pm, Sunday at the church. Arrangements are with Harvey Anderson Funeral Home in Kerkhoven.

Leo Andrew Hesse was born April 26, 1935, in Eagle Creek Twp., Scott Co., MN, the son of Peter H. and Anna B. (Derhaag) Hesse. He attended St. John’s School and graduated from Jordan High School in 1953. Leo served in the US Army during the Korean Conflict and was discharged in 1964. He returned to the Prior Lake area where he farmed. On April 29, 1977, Leo was united in marriage to Margaret (Stans) in Watertown, SD. Leo later attended Willmar Vo-Tech for agriculture. He lived in Richfield and Wendell, before moving to Kerkhoven in 1982. He later worked at Kerkhoven Ford Tractor Equipment and Don and Vern’s Ford and Mills Ford, both in Willmar.

Leo enjoyed spending time with his family, gardening and cooking salsa, and driving tractor.

Surviving are his wife, Margaret of Kerkhoven; children, James Hesse of Prior Lake, JoAnn Hesse of Hamel, John (and Michelle) Hesse of Prior Lake, Joseph Hesse of Long Prairie, and Gene (and Jen) Hesse of Foley; four grandchildren, Andrew Weiers, Catherine Hesse, Emily Hesse, and Tanya Hesse. He is also survived by his siblings, MaryAnn Deutsch of Shakopee, Richard Hesse of Elko, and Joan Glisczinski of Belle Plaine; and his sister-in-law, MaeBetty Hesse of Hamilton, MS.

He was preceded in death by his parents, son, Joseph Andrew Hesse, brother, Edward, and brothers-in-law, Lambert Deutsch and Sylvester Glisczinski.

Mary Katherine Devenport, 68 of Willmar died Sunday, May 31, 2009 at Bethesda Heritage Center in Willmar. Mass of Christian Burial will be 10:30 am, Monday, June 8, 2009 at Church of St. Mary in Willmar. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Visitation will be from 2-4 pm, Sunday at Harvey Anderson Funeral Home in Willmar with a prayer service at 1:30 pm. Visitation will continue one hour prior to the service at the church on Monday.

Mary Kay was born on June 14, 1940, in Minneapolis, MN, the daughter of Arthur and Eleanor (Kierski) Bierden. She grew up in Columbia Heights and attended St. Anthony Catholic Schools, graduating in 1958. She continued her education at College of St. Benedict in St. Joseph, Minnesota, graduating in 1962.

On October 13, 1962, she was united in marriage to Jon Devenport at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Columbia Heights. Following their marriage, Jon and Mary Kay lived in Ft. Leonard Wood, MO and Stevens Point, WI. In 1969, they moved to Willmar and Mary became the Religious Education Coordinator at Church of St. Mary. Mary Kay had to retire in 2000 because of her health. The church was Mary Kay’s life and her dedication and devotion to the students made them her second family. When she was not at church, she enjoyed reading, sewing and scrapbooking.

Surviving are her husband, Jon; children, Rebecca (and Jeff) Engel of Carver; Jennifer (and Kurt) Dittes of Willmar; Michael (and Jan) Devenport of Anchorage, AK; Daniel (and Brook) Devenport of Mankato; eight grandchildren, Ellie Dittes, Riley and Delaney Devenport, Jake and Hanna Engel, Kole, Kalie and Kirsten Devenport. Also surviving are her siblings, Jim (and Peg) Bierden of North Providence, RI; John (and Patty) Bierden of Leominster, MA; Bill (and Marilyn) Bierden of Eden Prairie and brother-in-law, Ron Pryatel of Apple Valley.

She was preceded in death by her parents and sister, Barbara Pryatel.

Lester L. Hanson, age 100 of Spicer, died Tuesday, June 2, 2009 at Koronis Manor in Paynesville. Funeral services will be 2:00 p.m. Saturday, June 6, 2009 at the Johnson Funeral Home in New London, where a visitation will begin at 12:30. Burial will be in Oak Hill Cemetery.

Lester Leroy Hanson was born on July 20, 1908 in Windom, the son of John and Augusta (Hofland) Hanson. He grew up on the family farm near Windom and attended country grade school. On July 2, 1931, Lester was united in marriage to Alice Sorenson in Windom. To this union one daughter and three sons were born. They made their home in rural Spicer and he worked at Despatch Oven in Minneapolis as a welder. He retired in 1972. Lester and Alice were able to share in 56 years of marriage before her death on May 19, 1988.

Lester enjoyed his tractors, Grizzly 4-wheeler, watching wrestling and old westerns on TV, reading, feeding the birds and squirrels and his dog, Kippy.

Lester died on Tuesday, June 2, 2009 at Koronis Manor in Paynesville at the age of 100. He is survived by his children, Dorothy (Clinton) Hinseth of Sunburg, Donald (Judy) Hanson of Rogers, and Larry (Deb) Hanson of Spicer; daughter-in-law, Elaine Hanson of New London; numerous grandchildren, great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren and sister, Avis Hanson of Windom.

Lester was preceded in death by his wife, Alice; son, Robert; sister, Clara; brothers, Ervin and Bert and twin brother, Chester.

Georgine M. Nelson, 90, of Kerkhoven, died on Friday May 29, 2009, at Rice Care Center after battling with Alzheimer’s. A memorial service will be 11:00 am on Saturday June 6th at Bethesda Lutheran Church, rural Murdock, Minnesota. Interment will be in the church cemetery. Friends may call on Friday from 5 until 7 pm at Harvey Anderson Kerkhoven Funeral Home and on Saturday one hour prior to the service at the church.

Georgine Marie (Johnson) was born on January 26, 1919, in Hayes Township, Swift County, Minnesota. Georgine’s father, George Peterson, died in the armed services prior to Georgine’s birth. Her mother, Elizabeth (Carlson) Peterson, later married O.B. Johnson and he became her loving father. She was baptized and confirmed at Bethesda Lutheran Church. Georgine attended St. Cloud Teachers College and taught three years in rural schools in Hayes Township.

On June 8, 1941, Georgine married Ardell Nelson at Bethesda Lutheran Church. This union was blessed with four children. Georgine was primarily a homemaker and mother, but she also was very active in the farming operation, milking and feeding cattle, feeding hogs and raising chickens. She also spent many hours on the tractors.

She was active in church activities, teaching Sunday school for many years and serving as president of the women’s group. She was involved as a 4-H leader and PTA member.

Georgine was an avid gardener and particularly loved to raise vegetables. She spent the winters making quilts and was very interested in family history. Georgine loved to play board games with the grandchildren and was very good at Wheel of Fortune.

Surviving are her children, Carol (and Gary) Wehrer of Park Rapids, Karen (and Stephen) Jensen of Owatonna, Carlton (and Marsha) Nelson of Kerkhoven, and James Nelson of Murdock; eight grandchildren and 20 great grandchildren. Also surviving are her sister, Doris Holmberg of Murdock and her sister-in-law, June Larson of Worthington.

She was preceded in death by her parents and husband, Ardell.


Gary E. Lecher, age 62 of Belgrade, died Monday, June 1, 2009 at Glacial Ridge Hospital in Glenwood. Funeral services will be 10:30 a.m. Saturday June 6, 2009 at Gausdal Lutheran Church in rural New London. Visitation will be 5:00 to 8:00 p.m. Friday at the Johnson Funeral Home in Belgrade and one hour prior to the services at the church. . Burial will be in the church cemetery.

Gary Edward Lecher was born on May 29, 1947 in Benson, the son of Isadore and Elizabeth (Mueller) Lecher. He grew up in Kerkhoven where he attended school. On November 29, 1969, Gary was united in marriage to Bonita Esler. To this union a son and two daughters were born. They made their home in Minneapolis and Syracuse, NY before moving to Belgrade in 1981. Gary was self-employed and worked as scrap iron dealer, tree trimmer and stump grinder. He enjoyed auctions, garage sales, collecting NASCAR cars and spending time with his family.

At the age of 62, Gary died on Monday, June 1, 2009 at Glacial Ridge Hospital in Glenwood after a nine year battle with cancer. He is survived by his wife, Bonnie of Belgrade, children, Greg Lecher (sp. Friend, Julie) of Belgrade, Angie Lecher of Belgrade, Sara Lecher (sp. Friend, Jeff) of Belgrade and Brandon Sonstegard of Belgrade; granddaughter, Hailey Jenniges; brothers, Ronald (Wendy) Lecher of Belgrade, Richard (Shelley) Lecher of Belgrade, sisters, Marlene (Russell) Strand of Belgrade, Margaret (Ron) Hart of Belgrade and Sandy Lecher of Wisconsin and numerous nieces and nephews.

Gary was preceded in death by his parents; infant brother, Richard; brothers, Robert and DuWayne and sister, Pat Quigley.

Gertrude M. Kotz, 88, of Belgrade died on Monday, June 1, 2009, at Koronis Manor in Paynesville. Funeral Mass will be held on Thursday, June 4, 2009, at 11:00 am at St. Francis de Sales Catholic Church in Belgrade. Burial will be at the church cemetery. A visitation will be held on Wednesday from 5-8:00 pm at Johnson Funeral Home in Belgrade, with a Christian Mothers Rosary at 5:30 pm and parish prayers at 7:30 pm. The visitation will continue one hour prior to the service at the church.

Gertrude Mary Kotz was born on July 15, 1920 in Presho, South Dakota, the daughter of Patrick and Mathilda (Jacoby) Sweeney. She grew up in Presho where she was baptized and confirmed into the Catholic Faith. She attended Presho Elementary and High School. On September 2, 1937, she was united in marriage to Joseph Kotz in Sweeney, SD. This union was blessed with 6 boys and 9 girls. Joseph and Gertrude worked their way to Belgrade where they made their home. The family ran a dairy farm in rural Belgrade until 1984 when Gertrude and Joseph moved into Belgrade. Joseph died on December 15, 1998, together they shared in 61 years of marriage. In 2004 Gertrude moved to Washburne Court in Paynesville where she lived until recently when she moved to Koronis Manor.

Gertrude was a member St. Francis de Sales Catholic Church in Belgrade. She was very active in the Christian Mothers there. She also volunteered at the food shelf in Belgrade. Gertrude was an expert homemaker, she excelled at gardening, quilting, baking, and canning. She also enjoyed playing cards and cheering on the Twins. The most important thing in Gertrude’s life was her family; she devoted herself to her husband, children, grandchildren and great grandchildren.

Gertrude M. Kotz died on Monday, June 1, 2009, at Koronis Manor in Paynesville at the age of 88. She is survived by her children, Ronald (fiancé Janet) of Grantsburg, WI, Virginia (Ken) Terhaar of Brooten, Vernon “Butch” (Mary) of Belgrade, Monica (Mike) Stanger of Watkins, Maxine (Donald) Dahl of Blaine, Rosella (John) Nelson of St. Augusta, Gene (Becky) of Blaine, Wayne (Marcia) of Mililani, HI, Janet Kotz (Mark Trisko) of St. Paul, Margaret (Don) Aukrust of Brooklyn Center, Mark (Mickey) of Belgrade, Kathy (Bob) Antil of Fridley, Lori (Brian) Lieser of Paynesville, and Brian of Blaine. Gertrude is also survived by 34 grandchildren; 37 great grandchildren; and her sister Cecelia Walker of Gregory, SD.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Joseph; daughter, Julie; daughter-in-law Sylvia; a brother and five sisters.

Eugene F. Gerding age 91 of Melrose, formerly of Belgrade, died Sunday, May 31, 2009 at the Melrose Hospital. Mass of Christian burial will be 11:00 a.m., Friday, June 5, 2009 at St. Francis de Sales Catholic Church in Belgrade. Visitation will be 5:00 to 8:00 p.m. Thursday at Johnson Funeral Home in Belgrade, where there will be a 7:30 p.m. parish prayer service. Visitation will continue on Friday for one hour prior to the service at the church. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

Eugene Frank Gerding was born on April 19, 1918 in Greenwald, the son of John and Margaret (Deters) Gerding. He grew up in Greenwald and Elrosa, where he attended grade school. On March 30, 1940, Gene was united in marriage to Lorraine Trisko in St. Cloud. To this union two sons and one daughter were born. They made their home in Elrosa for a short time before moving to Belgrade in 1947 where he worked for Belgrade Superior Feeds as a salesmen before retiring in 1980. He continued his turkey growing operation and was owner of the Elrosa grain elevator into retirement. They moved to Melrose in 2004. Lorraine and Gene were able to share in 67 years of marriage before Lorraine’s death on Nov. 9, 2007.

Gene was a member of St. Francis de Sales Catholic Church in Belgrade, where he served on parish council for many years. He also served on the Belgrade School Board, Belgrade Nursing Home Board and was a member of the Lion’s Club. He enjoyed bowling, going for drives and out to eat with Lorraine and visiting with family and friends.

Gene died on Sunday, May 31, 2009 at the Melrose Hospital at the age of 91. He is survived by his children, Dr. Dale (Mary) Gerding of Chicago, IL, Dr. James (Dodie) Gerding of Spokane, WA and Susan (Steven) Chirhart of North Oaks; eight grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.

Gene was preceded in death by his wife, Lorraine; sister, Mary Ann Gallagher and his parents.


June E. Gustafson, 88, of New London, died on Sunday afternoon, May 31, 2009, at GlenOaks Care Center in New London. Funeral service will be 11:00 a.m. Thursday, May 4, 2009 at Peace Lutheran Church in New London. Visitation will be 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. Wednesday at the Johnson Funeral Home in New London and for one hour prior to the services at the church. Burial will be in Lebanon Cemetery in New London.

June Eileen Gustafson was born on June 1, 1920, the daughter of Martin and Esther (Larson) Lobbins in Clara City. She was baptized in New London and confirmed at Zion Church in Belgrade. She grew up in Belgrade and New London where she attended country grade school near Windy Hill. On September 25, 1950 June was united in marriage to Leonard Gustafson. They made their home in Minneapolis where she worked for Honeywell for many years. Together, June and Leonard were able to share in 25 years of marriage before his death on January 6, 1976. June returned to New London in 1986.

June was a member of Peace Lutheran Church, where she was active in Peace prayer ministry, weekly bible study and Peace WELCA and two missionary trips to Jamaica. She was also a volunteer at GlenOaks for 10 years and member of the Legion Auxiliary.

June died on Sunday, May 31, 2009 at GlenOaks Care Center at the age of 88. She is survived by children, Marilee Callan of Dassel, Reva Hanson of Cokato, and Barry Gustafson of Cokato; 16 grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; and sister, Garnet Gjerde of New London.

June was preceded in death by husband, Leonard; son, Harlan; daughter, Lynnette; four brothers and parents.

  Adalbert L. “Del” Mayer, 95 of Clara City, formerly of Willmar, died on Friday, May 29, 2009 at the Clara City Care Center. Funeral services will be held at 2:00 pm on Wednesday, June 3, 2009, at Faith Lutheran Church in Clara City. Burial will be at Bethany Reformed Cemetery in Clara City. A visitation will be held on Tuesday evening from 5-7:00 pm at Faith Lutheran Church in Clara City and continue one hour prior to the service on Wednesday.

Adalbert L. Mayer was born on September 5, 1913 in New Prague Minnesota, the son of Albert and Carolina (Dahlke) Mayer. He attended a German elementary school in New Prague and went on to graduate from New Prague High School in 1931. He worked for farmers in the area until 1936, when he became the manager of the New Prague COOP.

On July 10, 1941 Del was drafted into the United States Army. He served his country in the 7th Infantry in the Pacific Campaign during WWII. He served bravely earning 6 Bronze Stars during his time in the Pacific. On October 18, 1945 Del was honorably discharged from the Army.

After the war Del moved to Willmar where he operated a café in the old downtown area. After operating the café he worked for a motor repair shop in Willmar until he retired.

On October 27, 1977 Del was united in marriage to Johanna Fuls at First Reformed Church in Willmar. Del and Johanna lived in Willmar until Johanna fell ill and he moved to Prairie Park in Clara City to remain close to her. Del eventually moved over to the Care Center where he lived until his death.

Del was a member of Faith Lutheran Church in Clara City and a member of the American Legion Post # 167. He enjoyed woodworking, drawing, painting, reading, and going to auctions.

Adalbert L. Mayer died on Friday, May 29, 2009 at the Clara City Care Center, he was 95. He is survived by his sisters-in-law, Adela Fuls, Frieda Mayer; and his nieces, nephews, and friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Albert and Carolina; wife, Johanna; siblings, Leona, Stacey, Werner, and Evelyne.

Norman Balcik, 85, of Lake Lillian, died Monday, May 25, 2009 at Bethesda Pleasantview Nursing Home in Willmar. Mass of Christian Burial will be 10:30 am, Saturday, May 30, 2009 at Church of St. Mary in Willmar. Burial will be in the church cemetery with Military Honors by American Legion Post #167 of Willmar. Visitation will be from 5-7 pm, Friday at Harvey Anderson Funeral Home in Willmar with a prayer service at 6:30 pm. Visitation will continue one hour prior to service at the church on Saturday.

Norman was born on November 24, 1923, in Cudahy, Wisconsin, the son of Frank and Paulina (Koehn) Balcik. They lived in Cudahy until he was about 7 yrs old and they moved to a farm Lakefield, Jackson County, Minnesota. Following his schooling, Norman stayed home and farmed with his father. He served in the United States Navy from March 20, 1945 until his honorable discharge on July 8, 1946.

On June 20, 1952, Norman was united in marriage to Veronica Jandera in Bismarck, North Dakota. They lived in Bismarck for a short time before moving to Willmar and in 1980, they moved to Svea. He farmed for a few years but spent most of his working career as a building contractor. He was a member of American Legion Post #167 of Willmar.

Surviving are his wife, Veronica; daughter, Jean (and Gerald) Carlson of Willmar; five grandchildren, Christopher, Jeremy, Travis, Anthony and Michelle; and 10 great grandchildren.

His parents preceded him in death.

James W.A. “Jim” Dillabough, 58, of Willmar, died Monday, May 25, 2009 at his home. His funeral will be 1:00 pm, Friday at First Presbyterian Church in Willmar. Burial will be in Fairview Cemetery in Willmar. Visitation will be from 5-8 pm, Thursday at Harvey Anderson Funeral Home in Willmar and continue one hour prior to service at the church on Friday.

Jim was born on January 26, 1951, in Minot, ND, the son of Archibald and Nellie (Ewen) Dillabough. He grew up in Sarles where he attended elementary school and graduated from Border Central High School in 1969. Jim graduated from junior college in Devil’s Lake in 1970 with an auto mechanics degree. He then started with Burlington Northern Railroad.

On June 4, 1977, he was united in marriage to Carol Nelson in St. Paul. They lived in Fridley and Coon Rapids until moving to Willmar in 1979. Jim was still working with Burlington Northern Santa Fe as a locomotive engineer. He was a member of Fist Presbyterian Church where he had served as a deacon. Jim also was very active with the Boy Scouts of America having been a Cub Scout Master; Boy Scout Leader and Master, receiving the Wood Badge.

Surviving are his wife, Carol; children, Shane Dillabough of Willmar; Christina (and Jason) Olson of Spicer; Travis Dillabough of Willmar; three grandchildren, Kiara, Tyler and Adreana; and his sister, Gloria (and Harlan) Soholt of Belt, MT.

He was preceded in death his parents.

LaVerne H. Wieberdink, age 73 of Willmar formerly of Prinsburg, died on Saturday, May 23, 2009 at Rice Memorial Hospital in Willmar. Funeral service will be 3:00pm on Wednesday at Harvey Anderson Funeral Home in Willmar. Burial will be in Fairview Cemetery in Willmar. Visitaion will begin on Wednesday at 2pm until the time of service at Harvey Anderson Funeral Home in Willmar.

LaVerne Henry Wieberdink was born on October, 24, 1935 to Leslie and Johanna (Swierenga) Wieberdink. He grew up in the Prinsburg area where he attended school. He entered the United States Navy in January of 1956 and received an Honorable Discharge in November of 1957. He returned to the Prinsburg area where he worked road construction all of his life retiring in 1999.

LaVerne enjoyed traveling and spent the winter months in Hawaii. He was very inventive and would build models of things from scratch including a replica of the Naval Vessel he was stationed on.

He is survived by his mother, Johanna Wieberdink of Willmar; daughters: LaVonne (and Russell) Takaezu of Honolulu, Hawaii, Connie Weber of Paynesville, Wanda (and Paul) Friesen of Faribault, Bonnie (and Dennis) Thurston of Spicer, Kristine (and Levi) Sheppard of Salt Lake City, Utah; six grandchildren; on great-grandchild; brothers: Melvin (and Sandy) Wieber of Evergreen, Colorado, Merle (and Paulette) Wieberdink of Willmar, Larry Wieber of Minneapolis; sisters: Linda (and Dean) Hanson of Big Lake, Judy Lee of Willmar, and Rosemary Cleary of Willmar.

He was preceded in death by his father.

Robert M. Bloom, age 85 of Willmar, died on Saturday, May 23, 2009 at his home in Willmar. Funeral service will be 1:00 pm on Wednesday at Bethel Lutheran Church. Robert Manley Bloom was born on February 9, 1924, in Willmar, Minnesota, the son of Leon and Elvira (Nelson) Bloom. He grew up in Willmar and graduated from Willmar High School in the class of 1942. He entered the United States Army where he served during WWII. He received an Honorable discharge in December of 1945. He was united in marriage to Dorothy Card on July 2, 1945 in Willmar. The couple resided in Willmar and Robert began working as a conductor for the Great Northern Railroad. Three children were blessed in this union.

He was a member of the Willmar Masonic Lodge and the Fraternal Order of Eagles Aerie 2334.

He enjoyed gardening and traveling, and wintering in Arizona.

He is survived by his wife, Dorothy of Willmar, and son Jeff (and Marian) Bloom of Willmar; two grandchildren: Ryan and Jennifer Bloom; and brother Jack Bloom of Bend, OR.

Robert was preceded in death by his parents; sons: Doug and Lee, and granddaughter Tanya Tonn Bloom.

Robyn W. Olson, age 52 of New London, died unexpectedly May 21, 2009 at his home near New London. Graveside service will be 11:00 a.m. Tuesday, May 26, 2009 at Colfax Cemetery rural New London. Visitation will be 5:00-7:00 p.m. Monday at the Johnson Funeral Home in New London.

Robyn Wayne Olson was born on October 4, 1956 in New London, the son of Gordon and Alaine (Bengtson) Olson. He was baptized and confirmed at Lebanon Lutheran Church. He attended school in Belgrade and graduated from Belgrade High School in 1974. Robyn was united in marriage to Betty Jane Bazey on Aug. 6, 1977. To this union three daughters were born. He worked several jobs in the area. The most recent for Master Mark in Paynesville until his health began to fail. He was a member of Crow River Lutheran Church in Belgrade. He enjoyed his children very much and visiting with relative and friends.

Robyn is survived by his three daughters, Crystal Olson, Patrice (Jarred) Spera and Megan Olson; two grandchildren, Cole Spera and Dylan Tucker all of Alexandria, LA; two brothers, Rodney Olson of New London and Rick Olson of Belgrade; two aunts, Muriel Bengtson and Geneva Olson, both of New London and numerous nieces and nephews.

Robyn was preceded in death by his parents; sister, Gloria; brother-in-law, James Fremberg; brother, Gayland “Bud” Olson; niece Patricia Fremberg and nephews, David and Douglas Fremberg.

Harriet B. Arnesen, 89, of Willmar died Thursday, May 21, 2009 at Bethesda Heritage Center in Willmar. Her funeral service will be Wednesday, May 24, 2009, at 11:00 am at Calvary Lutheran Church in Willmar with the Rev. Jeanne M. Aamot officiating. Burial is in First Lutheran Norway Lake Cemetery in rural New London. Visitation is at Calvary Lutheran Church in Willmar one hour prior to service. Arrangements are with Harvey Anderson Funeral Home in Willmar.

Harriet was born July 23, 1919 and raised near Norway Lake in rural New London, living with her grandparents, Hans and Beata Engen and her mother, Ella, and stepfather, Joseph Simonson. She married Theodore C. “Ted” Arnesen (d. 1995) on September 10, 1938 at First Lutheran Norway Lake. They lived in the New London-Spicer area before moving to Willmar in the 1950s where Ted was a self-employed carpenter/contractor until his retirement in 1977. Harriet assisted in the operation of the contracting business, managed the resort they owned on Lake Minnewaska in Glenwood for five years, and worked for the school lunch program in Willmar. Harriet was an active volunteer in her church and in the hospital auxiliary.

Harriet was baptized and confirmed in the Lutheran faith at First Lutheran Norway Lake in rural New London and was a member of Calvary Lutheran Church in Willmar for the past 55 years.

Harriet loved gardening, sewing and baking, and was a joyful friend and neighbor, always ready to lend a helping hand. An avid Scrabble and card game player, she also relished time spent outdoors, with fishing among her favorite pursuits. As wife, mother, sister, and friend, she enjoyed her role as social engineer and caregiver making time spent with others a priority.

Harriet died Thursday, May 21, 2009 at Bethesda Heritage Nursing Center in Willmar at the age of 89 years.

She is survived by her children; Beverly (and Darryl) Jacobson of St. Cloud, LeRoy Arnesen of Plymouth, and Judy (and John) Payne of Wayzata; six grandchildren, Steve (and Julie) Jacobson, Marc Jacobson, Lynelle (and John) Torgerson, Katherine, John Phillip, and Samantha Payne; six great grandchildren, Danielle and Nicole Torgerson, Beau and Nina Jacobson, Zachary Jacobson, and Kai Payne; one brother, Justin (and Shirley) Simonson of Willmar; and three sisters-in-law, Irma Arnesen of Willmar, Mildred Jordin of Spicer, and Mary Arnesen of Ocala, Florida.

She was preceded in death by her husband, her parents, one brother, Robert (and Gladys) Engen, and an infant daughter on November 18, 1940.

Delpha M. Thon, age 88 of New London, died Monday, May 18, 2009 at Rice Memorial Hospital in Willmar. Funeral services will be 10:00 a.m. Thursday, May 21, 2009 at Peace Lutheran Church in New London. Visitation will be Wednesday from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. at the Johnson Funeral Home in New London and for one hour prior to the services at the church. Burial will be at Glen Haven Memorial Gardens in Crystal.

Delpha Mae Thon was born on April 28, 1921 on the family farm near Garvin, MN, the daughter of Marion and Edith (Lind) Owens. She was baptized and confirmed at the Garvin Congregational Church. She attended school in the area and after graduating from high school, attended Minneapolis Business College.

On July 29, 1944, Delpha was united in marriage to Frank Thon at the Garvin Congregational Church. They made their home in Minneapolis for 38 years where Delpha worked as a homemaker. After her children graduated from high school she worked for the Minneapolis Credit Bureau, retiring in 1982. She and Frank then moved to Pine City. She moved to GlenOaks Senior Living Center in New London in 2001. Delpha and Frank were able to share in 50 years of marriage before Frank’s death in 1994.

Delpha was a member of Peace Lutheran Church and the New London Legion Auxiliary. She enjoyed spending time with her family, fishing, playing cards (especially with her grandchildren) and watching the Minnesota Twins.

Delpha is survived by her children, John (Virginia) Thon of New London, Neil (Lois) Thon of Coon Rapids, and Barb (Bob) Raudenbush of Worthington; eight grandchildren, Jennifer, Brian, Tami, Michelle, Lynne, Molly, Krista, and Jesse; and thirteen great-grandchildren.

Delpha was preceded in death by her husband, Frank; parents and infant brother.

Betty R. Bratsch, 79, of Willmar, died Monday, May 18, 2009 at her home in Willmar. Mass of Christian Burial will be 10:30 am, Friday, May 22, 2009 at Church of St. Mary in Willmar. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Visitation will be from 5-7 pm, Thursday at Harvey Anderson Funeral Home in Willmar with a Prayer Service at 6:30 pm followed by a Rosary at 7:00 pm. Visitation will continue one hour prior to the service at the church on Friday.

Betty was born on July 12, 1929, in St. Leo, Minnesota, the daughter of Bernard and Elizabeth (Unzen) Eischens. She attended St. Leo Catholic School through the seventh grade. Her family moved to a farm south of Olivia and she attended a country school for the eighth grade and graduated from Olivia High School in 1947. Betty then moved to Minneapolis where she received her nurses training in 1948. She was a nurse in Marshall from 1948 until 1950.

On April 12, 1950, she was united in marriage to Willis Bratsch at Church of St. Mary in Willmar. Following their marriage, they lived in Olivia until 1967 when they moved to Rosemount and in 1982, they moved to Clear Lake, Iowa. After being a nurse for 43 years, Betty retired in 1991 and they moved to Nest Lake, near Spicer. In 1994, they moved into Willmar.

She was baptized and confirmed at St. Leo and was a member of Church of St. Mary. Betty helped with Meals on Wheels, envelope stuffing and bringing the gifts forward at communion. Her family remembers her love of traveling, enjoying their winters in Arizona, Florida and Texas. She also liked reading and you could always figure at 6:30 pm, the TV was tuned to Channel 4 for Wheel of Fortune.

Surviving are her husband, Willis; children, Gary (and Susan) Bratsch of East Glacier, MT; Sandra (and Bob) Johnson of Willmar; Kathy Bratsch of Cantonment, FL; six grandchildren, Jessica Bratsch, Joe Bratsch, Melissa (and Mark) Hansen, Joe (and Holly) Johnson, Tony Johnson, Tyler (and Emmi) Bratsch; four great grandchildren, Ella, Evan Emme and Ayla. Also surviving are her siblings, Eldred (and Anna Mae) Eischens and Mary Brill; and sister-in-law, Georgia Ann Eischens all of Willmar.

She was preceded in death by her parents, daughter, Cindy, great grandson, Logan and brothers, Ray and Arnie.

Warren Earl Benton, age 73, of Belgrade died Saturday, May 16, 2009, at Rice Memorial Hospital in Willmar. Funeral services will be 2:00 p.m. Wednesday at First Lutheran Norway Lake. Burial will be at Solomon Lake Cemetery. A visitation will be held on Tuesday from 4:00 to 7:00 p.m. at the Johnson Funeral Home in Belgrade, and continue one hour prior to the service at church. In Lieu of flowers memorials are preferred.

Warren Earl Benton was born December 2, 1935, in Garden Valley, near Minot, North Dakota, the third of seven children born to Earl and Jennie (Bo´) Benton. He grew up and attended school in Minot, ND, and graduated in 1955 from Sawyer, ND. He was baptized and confirmed at age 25 at St. Peters Lutheran Church Sawyer.

Warren married Marlene Irwin on August 24, 1958. This union was blessed with one daughter. He joined the National Guard as a junior in high school and served his country from 1954-1965.

In 1956 Warren started working at MDU (Montana Dakota Utilities). He went from a meter reader to a town representative during his 28 years there.  He was a self taught engineer working and retiring from Jennie-O during the years of 1984-1997.  Warren was married on December 2, 1970 to Mary Ellen Dokken of Willmar, together they had seven children.

Warren’s family and faith were the most important parts of his life. He enjoyed coin collecting, bowling, golf, hunting, fishing, and gardening. Warren was a friend to everyone he met and was always willing to lend a helping hand.

Surviving are his wife, Mary of Belgrade; children, Wannetta Benton (and Donald Senger) of Devils Lake, ND, Justine (and Claire) Warner of Melbourne, FL, Jon (and Dianne) Benton of Norwood-Young America, Jackie Benton (and special friend Jimmy Mitchell) of St. Cloud, Jenelle Benton (and special friend Chris Schulz) of Brooten, Jolene Holder of Rockledge, FL, Jason (and Valerie) Benton of Hawick, Jelynda (and Gary) solid of Eagle Bend; 18 grandchildren and one great grandson. Also surviving are his brother and sisters, Eline (and Lannie) Kunkel of Minot, ND, Vivian Brandwisch of Surrey, ND, Lenore (and Lester) Zietz of Underwood, ND, Perry (and Pattie) of Minot, ND, and Iris (and Jack) Galligan of Burtrum, MN.

He was preceded in death by his parents and his brother, Ronnie.

Laurie Christine Anderson, 55, of Willmar, died unexpectedly Saturday at her home. Memorial services will be 10:30 am Friday at Calvary Lutheran Church. Friends may call on Thursday from 5 until 7 pm at Harvey Anderson Funeral Home and on Friday 1 hour prior to services at the church.

Laurie was born on November 7, 1953, at St. Paul, Minnesota, the daughter of George E. and Marion L. (Olson) Anderson. Their family lived in Wayzata, Montevideo, Alexandria and Miltona, prior to moving to Willmar. She attended her schooling in Montevideo graduating from Montevideo High School in 1972. Laurie continued her education at Minnesota School of Business, where she received her Associated Degree in Business.

Laurie was baptized in Wayzata and confirmed at Trinity Lutheran in Montevideo and was a member of Calvary Lutheran in Willmar at the time of her death. She had served as a Stephen’s Ministry and helped with the serving units.

Surviving is her life long partner, Lonnie Curtis, Willmar; children, Benjamin Ryan Anderson, Sioux Falls, SD, Casey Christine Anderson, Tucson, AZ, Tyler Loren Curtis, Willmar, and Aaron (and Janell) Curtis, Port St. Lucie, FL.; six grandchildren, Caleb, Kaia, Landon, Logan, Kaitlyn and baby Ava to be born in July. Also surviving are her siblings, Sheryl (and Bob) Miller, Montevideo, Pam (and Vern) Anderson, Dawson, Gregg (and Kathy) Anderson, Blaine, Carolyn ( and Marty) Koskela, Thompson Falls, MT, several nieces, nephews and cousins and Sam.

James R. Olson, 61, of Columbia Heights, died on Thursday, May 14, 2009, at his home. A funeral will be held at 1:00 pm on Monday at Big Grove Lutheran Church in rural Belgrade. Burial will be in the church cemetery. A visitation will be held from 5-7:00 pm on Sunday night at the Johnson Funeral Home in Belgrade and continue one hour prior to the service at the church.

James R. Olson was born on September 21, 1947, in Glenwood, the son of Loren and Betty (Fauskee) Olson. Jim was baptized at Our Savior Lutheran Church in Brooten and later confirmed into the Christian Faith at St. Timothy’s Lutheran Church in Columbia Heights. He attended a small country school in rural Brooten. The family moved to Columbia Heights when Jim was in the fourth grade. He then attended Columbia Heights elementary and later graduated from Columbia Heights High School. After high school Jim attended Anoka-Ramsey Jr. College where he received his Associates Degree. Jim continued to live in the family home in Columbia Heights after the rest of the family had moved back to the Belgrade-Brooten area. He worked for Larson Manufacturing in Fridley for over 30 years. His plan was to retire this fall.

Jim enjoyed the outdoors, kayaking, 4 wheeling and camping as much as could. He also enjoyed playing pool, horseshoes, darts, ping pong, and cribbage. On most weekends you would find Jim helping his brother, Roger, with his farm in rural Brooten. Jim never missed a family function, he had a special love for his nephews and nieces and he never got tired of entertaining them. James R. Olson died peacefully at his home on Thursday morning, May 15, 2009, he was 61.

He is survived by his parents, Loren and Betty of Brooten; siblings, Judy (Craig) Booth of Goodridge, Roger of Brooten, Lynette Olson of Alexandria, Kathy (Brent) Woods of Dent, Dan of Belgrade, Mariann Olson of Coon Rapids; and many nieces and nephews.

Herbert Roy Golnitz, age 94 of New London formerly of Hawick, died on Friday, May 15, 2009 at GlenOaks Care Center in New London. Funeral service will be 11:00 am Tuesday, May 19, 2009 at Hawick United Methodist Church in Hawick. Burial will be in Fairview Cemetery in Raymond. Visitation will be one hour prior to the service at the church on Tuesday. Arrangements are with Johnson Funeral Home in New London.

Herbert Roy Golnitz was born on June 19, 1914 in Afton Township, Iowa, the son of Wilhelm and Carolina (Miller) Golnitz. He attended school in Brook Township and farmed with his father on the family farm. He married Dorothy Hansenwinkel on June 18, 1944. The couple continued to farm in Afton Township and were blessed with three children: Virgil, Charlotte and Sandra. In 1947 they moved to a farm near Priam, Minnesota and farmed until 1966. Herbert also worked at the Willmar State Hospital for 15 years. In 1969 he began working for Star Machine in Minneapolis. Dorothy passed away on September 7, 1970. Herbert continued to work in Minneapolis. He was united in marriage to Phyllis Rhuby on March 19, 1971 in Hanover, Minnesota. The couple lived in Rockford, Minnesota. Herbert retired in 1977. In 1980 they moved to Hawick, Minnesota where they lived for 17 years, and then moved into New London in 2007.

Herbert was baptized and confirmed at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Afton Township, Iowa. He was an active member of Trinty Lutheran Church in Raymond serving as an elder. He was currently a member of Hawick United Methodist Church where he volunteered doing odd jobs and helping with lawn mowing. He also was very active with the Roseville Senior Citizens.

Herbert enjoyed farming, animals (farm and house dogs), and tinkering in his garage especially with engines. He and Phyllis enjoyed dancing, traveling and spending time with their entire family. He especially enjoyed the family get togethers at Long Lake.

Herbert is survived by his wife Phyllis of New London, daughter, Char (Jim) Gatewood of Princeton; step-children: Ramona (Fred) Evanski of Buda, TX, Larry (Marie) Rhuby of Brainerd, Linda Rhuby of Corcoron; step-daughter-in-law Shirlene Rhuby of Aurora, CO; son-in-law Duane Barrett of Oaskis; eleven grandchildren and twelve great-grandchildren.

In addition to his first wife, Herbert was preceded in death by his parents; son Virgil; daughter Sandra; great-granddaughter Amanda; two sisters; and step-son Randy.

Lawrence W. Caskey, 95, of Willmar died Thursday, May 14, 2009 at Rice Care Center in Willmar. His funeral service will be 1:00 pm, Tuesday at Vinje Lutheran Church in Willmar, with burial in Fairview Cemetery in Raymond. Visitation will be from 5-7:00 pm, Monday at Harvey Anderson Funeral Home in Willmar and on Tuesday one hour prior to the service at the church.

Lawrence Willis Caskey was born September 30, 1913 in Rembrandt, Iowa, the son of Willis and Anna (Siefken) Caskey. He moved to Minnesota with his family in 1921 and attended school in District 60, Jackson County, where he graduated from the 8th grade. They lived there for 10 years and south of Lakefield in the same county for another seven years. As a young man, Lawrence invented a windcharger, but never patented it. The family moved to Mountain Lake in 1937, and in 1940 moved to Kandiyohi County.

On February 24, 1940, Lawrence was united in marriage to Florence Bertilson, at the pastor’s home in St. James. They lived in several communities, including Raymond, Butterfield and Seattle, WA. The couple farmed for many years northwest of Priam. They moved to Willmar in 1966, where he continued to do carpentry work until his retirement in 1984. Florence preceded him in death on May 18, 2004.

He was a member of Vinje Lutheran Church. He was also a member of the Minnesota Inventors Congress and the Norway Lake Association. Lawrence enjoyed his hobbies of inventing, fishing, hunting and traveling. He invented many things in his life, besides a windcharger, a device to pump out sloughs, which he later donated to a wildlife improvement association, and many things made for his own benefit. But his first love was woodworking, making replicas of antique wagons and teams and other woodwork. He was a kind and patient man, who looked forward to spending time with family and friends.

Surviving are his daughters, Phyllis Thunstedt of Willmar, and Judy Fernando of Kaneohe, Hawaii; three grandchildren, Tim Thunstedt of Little Falls, Todd Thunstedt of Spicer and Lori (and Chad) Pettis of Willmar; five great-grandchildren, Taylor, Tyler and Tanner Thunstedt, A.J. and Isabella Lauren Pettis. Also surviving are his sisters, Evelyn Hemple of Jackson, Dorothy Blomgren and Opal Holmgren, both of Willmar and Joyce (and Gil) Clemons of Wyoming; brothers, Roy (and Myrtle) Caskey of Willmar, Ernie Caskey of New London, and Harold (and Delores) Caskey of Pennock; and many nieces and nephews.

In addition to his wife, he was preceded in death by his parents, three brothers, Richard, Raymond, and Donald and his sister, Hazel Peterson.

Dennis P. Full, 66, of Willmar, died Friday, May 8, 2009 at St. Mary’s Hospital in Rochester. His funeral will be 11:00 am, Saturday, May 16, 2009 at United Methodist Church in Willmar. Memorials preferred to Care Ministries at United Methodist Church in Willmar. Arrangements are with Harvey Anderson Funeral Home in Willmar.

Denny was born on February 1, 1943, at Mercy Hospital in Chicago, IL, the son of Denzel and Josephine (Werner) Full. He grew up in Chicago where he graduated from high school in 1961. He began his career in data processing in Gary, Indiana. He was then transferred to St. Paul, MN with a division of Union Tank Car. It is here that he met his wife to be, Jean Hultgren. Jeanie had applied for a summer job and Denny hired her. They were married on December 27, 1969, in the United Methodist Church in Raymond. Following their marriage, Denny and Jeanie lived in many parts of the country as Denny worked in Information Technology, accounting, and auditing. In 1983, they moved to Fullerton, CA, where he was Vice President of Sales for International Multi-Foods. In 1996, Denny and Jeanie went into business for themselves, purchasing two flower shops. They worked together until 2005 when they retired and moved to Willmar. Ever a businessman, Denny could not stay retired and they purchased St. Cloud Fire Equi
pment Company within the year.

Denny was an active member of the United Methodist Church in Willmar where he served on various committees.

Surviving are his wife, Jean of Willmar; daughter, Melanie Full of Santa Monica, CA; sister, Patricia Goldberg of Lemont, IL; mother-in-law Carolyn Hultgren of Willmar; and brother-in-law, Sheldon (and Faye) Hultgren of Billings, MT.

He was preceded in death by his parents, his father-in-law Lawrence Hultgren; and brother-in-law, David Goldberg.

Henry James “Jim” Mahler, 70, of Willmar, died Saturday, May 9, 2009 at his home. His funeral will be 11:00 am, Tuesday, May 12, 2009 at Vinje Lutheran Church in Willmar. Burial will be at 1:00 pm, Monday, May 18, 2009 at Zion Lutheran Cemetery, Oak Brook, IL. Jim was born on December 23, 1938, in Plainfield, NJ, the son of Henry Fred and Meta (Vetter) Mahler. He was baptized at Redeemer Lutheran Church in Westfield. When he was six years old, his family moved to Hinsdale, IL and he attended Zion Lutheran Elementary School and was confirmed on April 6, 1952 at Zion Lutheran Church. He graduated from Hinsdale High School in 1956 and then continued his education at Concordia Teachers College, River Forest, IL, and upon graduating in 1961, he moved to Westwood, NJ.

On August 17, 1963, Jim was united in marriage to LaNell Kappler at Bethany Lutheran Church in Houston, TX. They lived in Westwood until 1969, where Jim started Zion Lutheran School and served as its principal. During this time, Jim received his Master’s Degree in Counseling and Guidance from Columbia University Teacher’s College and later received his Doctorate in Education. For the next 10 years, Jim and LaNell lived in Maywood, IL and Jim was a professor at Concordia Teacher’s College, River Forest, IL. From 1979, until retiring in 2004 and moving to Willmar, Jim was a professor at California Lutheran University, Thousand Oaks, CA.

While living in Thousand Oaks, he was a member of Ascension Lutheran Church and since moving to Willmar was a member of Paz y Esperanza.

Jim enjoyed genealogy, camping, traveling and was a “suffering but proud” Cub’s fan. He belonged to the American Educational Research Association and the American Psychological Association. Throughout Jim’s life, he was an advocate for quality education especially through the church.

Surviving are his wife, LaNell; children, Rev. Naomi (and Todd Lynum) Mahler of Willmar; Rachel (and Brett) Kraemer of San Antonio, TX; Matthew (and fianceé, Loren Dealy) Mahler of Arlington, VA; four grandchildren, Andrew and Julia Kraemer and Sofia and Grace Lynum. Also surviving are his siblings, Barbara Mahler of Chicago, IL; David (and Julie) Mahler of Pittsburgh, PA and Dr. Peter (and Annette) Mahler of Madison, WI.

His parents, Henry and Meta, preceded him in death.

Edwin H. Wallentine, 78, of Willmar, died unexpectedly on Thursday at his home. The service will be 2:00 pm Monday at Mamrelund Lutheran Church, Pennock, with interment at Cloverleaf Cemetery, Willmar. Friends may call from 3 until 6 pm on Sunday at Harvey Anderson Funeral Home in Willmar and 1 hour prior to services at the church on Monday. Family prefers Memorials to Mamrelund Lutheran Church.

Edwin Harold Wallentine was born on November 30, 1930, in Whitefield Township, Kandiyohi County, Minnesota, the son of Harold and Edla (Bengtson) Wallentine. He grew up in the Svea area where he attended his schooling. Following his schooling Edwin worked with his father at the Svea Blacksmith Shop. He also worked construction, which included working on the Fort Randall Dam, near Pickstown, SD.

He served in the U S Army from February 26, 1952 – February 9, 1954, during the Korean Conflict.

On August 20, 1955, Edwin was united in marriage to Arnette Larson at Mamrelund Lutheran Church in Pennock; this union was blessed with five children. Following their marriage they lived in Clara City for one year where Edwin worked for DeRuyter Road Construction. In 1956, they moved to rural Willmar where they took over Arnette’s parent’s farm retiring in 1991. Edwin worked part-time for Liebl Farms helping with their field and repair work until 1997.

Edwin loved the outdoors, working on the farm, mowing his lawn and also enjoyed fishing. For many years their family enjoyed spending time at their cabin on Big Kandi Lake that Edwin and his father had built. He loved his grandchildren and looked forward to spending time with them. Christmas was a time for the family to gather at the farm to celebrate. Edwin and Arnette celebrated their 50th Wedding Anniversary in 2005. Each spring and winter Edwin would go to Squaw Lake to help his son and daughter-in law at their resort.

Surviving is his wife, Arnette; children, Larry (and Dawn) Wallentine, Raymond, Lon Wallentine Willmar, Lyle (and Kathryn) Wallentine, Squaw Lake, Lois Wallentine, Prior Lake, and Loren Wallentine, Willmar; eight grandchildren and one great grandchild. Also surviving is his sister, Donna Teigen, Kitchener, Ontario, Canada.

He was preceded in death by his parents and two brothers, Dale and Roger.

Dorothy Carlson, 77, of Belgrade, died Friday, May 08, 2009 at the Belgrade Nursing Home. Her funeral will be 11:00 am, Monday at Crow River Lutheran Church, rural Belgrade. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Visitation will be Sunday from 5-8 pm, at the Johnson Funeral Home in Belgrade and continue one hour prior to service at the church on Monday.

Dorothy was born on February 5, 1932, in St. Louis, Missouri, the daughter of Louis and Florence (Deckerd) Ambrose. She was baptized at Church of the Assumption and attended a Catholic grade school in St. Louis through the eighth grade. When she was eighteen, she moved with a friend to the Belgrade area where she eventually met her husband, Donald L. Carlson. They were married on December 2, 1953. Donald and Dorothy lived in the Belgrade, Willmar and New London areas. Dorothy worked for Jennie-O Foods for many years before retiring in 1994.

Dorothy was a member of Crow River Lutheran Church where she was active in altar guild and circle. She enjoyed playing Bingo even winning a trip to Hawaii. She tried camping for the first time when she was 63 at Games Lake and enjoyed boating.

Surviving are her sons, Terry (and Tina) Carlson of Belgrade; Dale Carlson of Brooten; Dennis (and Rochelle) Carlson of Ramsey and Robin Carlson of Paynesville; two grandchildren, Garrett and Dillon Carlson; her siblings, Phillip (and Francis) Ambrose, Carl (and Carol) Ambrose and Marilyn Bacon all of St. Louis; and many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents, husband in 2003 and brothers, Richard and Donald Ambrose.

 

Chester M. Strand, 81, of Sedan, formerly of Belgrade, died at his home in Sedan on Sunday night, May 3, 2009. A funeral service will be held at 10:00 am on Friday at the Johnson Funeral Home in Belgrade. Burial will be at St. Francis De Sales Cemetery in Belgrade. Visitation will be on Thursday night from 5-8:00 pm at the Johnson Funeral Home in Belgrade and continue one our prior to the service. In Lieu of flowers, memorials are suggested to Rice Hospice.

Chester Martin Strand was born on May 7, 1927, in Belgrade, the son of Reinardth and Ada (Allen) Strand. He grew up in Belgrade where he received his primary schooling. On May 13, 1946, he was united in marriage to Evelyn Pozorski in Sauk Rapids. This union was blessed with four sons and three daughters.

Chester worked as a lineman for the Soo Line Railroad. As the family of a lineman Chester’s family got used to moving, during his career, they lived in Sauk Rapids, St. Cloud, Paynesville, New London, Georgeville, Brooten, Carpio, ND, and finally they settled back in Belgrade. On October 25, 1985, Evelyn passed away; together they shared in 39 years of marriage. In 2006, Chester moved to Sedan to be closer to his daughter.

In May of 1987, Chester retired from the railroad. During his retirement, he enjoyed bowling, hunting, fishing, spearing, and playing cribbage. Chester also enjoyed driving, picking up cans, and hunting for snapping turtles. He loved his family especially spending time with his grandchildren and great grandchildren.

Chester M. Strand died on Sunday, May 3, 2009 at his home in Sedan, he was 81. Chester is survived by his children, Chester Jr. (Lynne) of Blaine, Nancy (Leland) Ward of Terrace, Duane of Wells, NV, Diane (Marvin) Kruckenberg of Bismarck, ND, Kathy (John) Aubart of Sedan, Kenny (Brenda) of Bismarck, ND; 22 grandchildren; and 29 great grandchildren. He is also survived by his siblings, Hazel Snyder of Minneapolis, Ole (Pat) of Bloomington, Russel (Marlene) of Georgeville, Donald (Floris) of Rogers, and David (Jacky) of Brooten.

Chester was preceded in death by his parents, Reinardth and Ada; wife, Evelyn; son, Donald and siblings, Reinardth, Gerald, Bernice, and Pearl.

Donna M. Peterson, age 78 of Willmar, died May 2, 2009 at Bethesda Heritage Center in Willmar. Memorial services will 10:00 a.m. Wednesday May 6, 2009 at Bethesda Heritage Center in Willmar with a visitation one hour prior to the service. Interment will be in Cloverleaf Cemetery in Willmar. In lieu of flowers, memorials are preferred to Bethesda Heritage activities department.

Donna Mae Peterson was born on November 30, 1930 in Lake Lillian, the daughter of Arthur W. and Bernice Evelyn (Erickson) Petterson. She was baptized and confirmed at First Lutheran Church in Lake Lillian. She grew-up in Lake Lillian and attended Bird Island High School, graduating in 1948. On February 26, 1949, Donna was united in marriage to Harold M. Peterson. To this union three daughters and one son were born. They initially lived in Kandiyohi before moving to Willmar in 1951, where she worked as a homemaker and raised her children. Together, Donna and Harold were able to share in 45 years of marriage before his death on February 8, 1994. Donna moved to Bethesda Heritage in August of 2005 where she was active on the ministry council.

Donna was a member of Bethel Lutheran Church in Willmar. She was also a member of Eastern Star, DOES and Red Hats.

Donna died on May 2, 2009 at Bethesda Heritage Center in Willmar at the age of 78. She is survived by her children, Sharon Peterson of Minneapolis, Mark (Leslie Phyle) of Chaplin, Amy (Mark) Schulz and their daughter, Evelyn of Watertown, SD; and Ellen Peterson of Willmar; loving friend and neighbor, Fanchon Ellwood and numerous nieces and nephews.

Donna was preceded in death by husband, Harold M.; parents; and brother, Eugene Petterson.

Joan Lucas Olson, 56, of Willmar, died Thursday, April 30, 2009 at Rice Memorial Hospital in Willmar. Her funeral will be 11 am on Monday, May 4, 2009 at Church of St. Mary in Willmar. Visitation will be from 5-8 pm, Sunday at Harvey Anderson Funeral Home in Willmar and continue one hour prior to service at the church on Monday. Memorials preferred in lieu of flowers.

Joan was born on January 15, 1953, in Little Falls, MN, the daughter of Anton and Kathleen (Bokinskie) Lucas. Joan grew up in Long Prairie where she was baptized and confirmed at St. Mary’s Mount Carmel Catholic Church; attended St. Mary’s Catholic School through the 6th grade and graduated from Long Prairie High School in 1971. She continued her education at Willmar Community College and graduated from the University of Minnesota with a Bachelor of Science degree in Social work.

On June 18, 1977, she was united in marriage to Robin Olson at Church of St. Mary in Willmar. They lived in Minneapolis and she worked for Donaldsons, starting as a salesperson and eventually became a buyer and an assistant store manager. Joan and Robin returned to Willmar in 1988 to join Robin’s dad, Ralph, at Peterson Shoes. In 1998, Joan and Robin purchased the business.

She will be lovingly remembered by Robin, her husband of almost 32 years; her cherished sisters and brothers, Barbara (and Richard) Schweiger of Andover; Steve (and Karen) Lucas of Apple Valley; Connie (and Tom) Botz of Delano; Toni Kay (and Barry) Borgeson of Andover and Paul Lucas of Tucson, AZ. Also surviving are her father and mother-in-law, Ralph and Evelyn Olson of Willmar; sisters-in-law and brother-in-law, Terry (and Meg) Olson of Richardson, TX; Cathy (and Bill) Bannon of Willmar; Caroline Olson of Orlando, FL; and many, many friends.

Her parents, Anton and Kathleen Lucas, preceded her in death.

Debbra A. Knesting, 57 of Willmar, died on Tuesday April 28th, 2009, at St. Cloud Hospital. Funeral services will be 1:30 pm Saturday at Bethel Lutheran Church, Round Lake, Minnesota, with interment in Round Lake Cemetery. Friends may call on Friday from 5 – 7 pm at Harvey Anderson Funeral Home 1000 19th Ave SW Willmar, with a prayer service for the public at 7 pm. Visitation will continue 1 hour prior to services at the church on Saturday.

Debbra A. (Rosendahl) was born on October 9, 1951, at Worthington, Minnesota the daughter of Ivan and Verna (Techau) Rosendahl. She grew up in rural Round Lake and graduated from Round Lake High School in 1969. Following graduation she continued her education attending Willmar Vo-Tech for cosmetology.

Debbra was united in marriage to Kenneth Knesting at Calvary Lutheran Church in Willmar on August 13, 1987. Following their marriage they lived in Willmar and Debbra worked at Jennie-O Foods as a laundry room attendant for the past 15 years.

Debbra was baptized in the Lutheran faith and was confirmed at Bethel Lutheran Church, Round Lake. She was a member of Calvary Lutheran in Willmar at the time of her death.

Her family recalls Debra’s love for baking, her hobbies included word games, playing cards and going to garage sales, always look for a good deal. She loved to decorate their home both inside and out for every holiday or festive occasion. Debbra was a people person and enjoyed visiting with those around her.

Surviving is her husband Ken; children, Michelle Martinson (and special friend Danny Garvick) Maynard, and Shane Knesting, Willmar; three grandchildren, Cody, Cassandra and Cole. Also surviving is her father Ivan Rosendahl, Round Lake and sister, Sandy (and Monte) Consoer, Round Lake.

She was preceded in death by her mother Verna.

Deloris M. Tengwall, age 76 of Willmar died on Monday, April 20, 2009 at Bethesda Pleasantview in Willmar. Funeral service will be 2:00 pm on Saturday at Salem Covenant Church in rural Pennock. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Visitation will be from 6:00-8:00pm on Friday at Harvey Anderson Funeral Home in Willmar and will continue one hour prior to the service at the church on Saturday.

Deloris “Dee” Margaret Tengwall was born on February 6, 1933 in Chicago, Illinois, the daughter of O. Arnold and Edith Margaret (Danielson) Johnson. In 1939 her family moved from Chicago to rural Pennock, Minnesota. She graduated from Willmar High School in 1950 and attended St. Cloud State Teachers College where she received her teaching certificate. Dee taught school in Brooklyn Park, Osseo, Princeton, and Excelsior. She was united in marriage to Arlan Verl Tengwall on June 30, 1956 at Salem Covenant Church in rural Pennock. The couple lived in the Twin Cities area and several small towns, where Arlan worked in Agricultural Banking. They lived in several areas including; Helena, MT, Aberdeen, SD, Ft. Worth, TX, Anoka, MN and Mason City, IA. In 1988 they retired to the Willmar area, and in 1999 moved to Spicer. Dee entered Bethesda Pleasantview in July of 2008.

Dee was a homemaker and kept busy raising her family in all the various areas where they lived. She was always active in the church with choir, ladies circles, and as a Sunday School Teacher. She was baptized in Chicago, and confirmed her faith at Salem Covenant in 1947. She was a member of first Covenant Church in Willmar.

Dee enjoyed knitting, sewing, embroidery, and gardening. She was an avid sports fan; always following the Minnesota Twins, Vikings and Gophers; and attending all of her grandchildren’s sporting events. Her family remembers Dee always baking special meals over the holiday seasons and would often sew or knit special clothes for Christmas and Easter. She also enjoyed traveling spending many winters in Arizona, Texas and Florida.

Dee passed away on Monday, April 20, 2009 at Bethesda Pleasantview Nursing Home in Willmar. She is survived by her husband Arlan Tengwall of Willmar; children Debra (Alan) Bauman of Kerkhoven, Laurie (Rod) Wahl of West St. Paul, Janine (Tim) Graham of Farmington, John (Kristin) Tengwall of Woodbury, and Amy (Tim) Anders of Woodbury; ten grandchildren; and brother Wendell (Kitty) Johnson of Akron, OH; sister Phyllis (Bill) Stewart of Corcoran; sister-in-law Bonnie (Jerry) Crosby of Cambridge; and several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; two sisters-in-law: Audrey Skoglund, and Sandra Swanson; brother-in-law Kenneth Skoglund and mother-in-law and father-in-law: Walter and Myrtle Tengwall.

Bernice E. Benson, age 90 of Danvers, died Saturday, April 11, 2009 at United Hospital in St. Paul. Memorial services will be 1 p.m. Thursday, April 16, 2009 at Trinity Lutheran Church in Benson, with visitation one hour prior to the services at church. Burial will be in the Benson City Cemetery. Funeral arrangements are with the Johnson Funeral Home in New London.

Bernice Ella Reuss was born on June 9, 1918 on the family farm in Shible Township, the daughter of Paul and Ella (Schreck) Reuss. She grew up on the family farm and attended country grade school. As a young girl the family moved to Holloway where she attended Holloway High School, graduating as valedictorian of her class. On October 9, 1938, Bernice was united in marriage to Alfred V. Benson. To this union two sons and three daughters were born. They made their home in Danvers where Bernice worked as the postal clerk and Alfred was the postmaster. She retired in 1977. They were able share in 67 years of marriage before Alfred’s death on December 5, 2005.

Bernice was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church in Benson and Our Redeemer’s Lutheran Church in Danvers prior to closing, where she was active as a Sunday school teacher and bible school teacher. She enjoyed sewing, ceramics, attending community sporting events gardening and riding motorcycle with Alfred in their retirement.

Bernice died on Saturday, April 11, 2009 at United Hospital in St. Paul at the age of 90. She is survived by her children, Dave (Gayle) Benson of Eden Prairie, Donna (Steve Olin) Benson of Lindstrom and Denise (Larry Maki) Benson of Deer River; six grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; 3 great-great grandchildren and sister, Ruby Reich of San Diego, CA.

Bernice was preceded in death by her husband, Alfred: daughter, Darlene Dallman; son, Donald Benson; parents; three brothers, & four sisters.

Gewain H. Hanson, age 85 of Willmar died on Monday, April 13, 2002 at Rice Memorial Hospital in Willmar. His funeral service will be 2:00pm Friday at Bethel Lutheran Church in Willmar. Burial will be at Fairview Cemetery in Willmar. Visitation will be from 5-7pm on Thursday at Harvey Anderson Funeral Home in Willmar and will continue one hour prior to the service at the church on Friday.

Gewain Harry Hanson was born on November 9, 1923 in Willmar, Minnesota, the son of Ingvald and Sadie (Gedosch) Hanson. He attended school in Willmar. He began working for Great Northern Railroad at a young age. He entered the United States Navy in April of 1943 where he served as a gunner during WWII for three years, receiving an Honorable Discharge in February of 1946. He returned to Willmar and continued to work at the railroad and later began his own business; Willmar Welding and Boiler Repair. He was united in marriage to Virginia Hawkinson on June 12, 1947 at Bethel Lutheran Church in Willmar. Gewain worked in his business for over 55 years.

Gewain was baptized at Vinje Lutheran Church and confirmed at Calvary Lutheran Church in Willmar. He was a member of Bethel Lutheran Church in Willmar. He was a member of the Willmar American Legion Post # 167 and Willmar V.F.W. Post # 1639 and past member of the National Board of Hobby Steam Engines.

Gewain enjoyed the outdoors; hunting, fishing, bird watching and hiking. He also enjoyed music, including banjo, harmonica, and accordion. His hobbies included model trains, steam engines, and attending thrashing shows. Gewain loved spending time with his family at the lake.

On Monday, April 13, 2009 Gewain passed away at the Rice Memorial Hospital in Willmar at the age of 85 years.

He is survived by his wife Virginia; daughter Donna (Tim) Weatherbee all of Willmar, granddaughter Jeana (David) Monson of Kandiyohi; great-grandson Riley; sister Elaine (Paul) DeCathelineau of Willmar; and nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, sister Marilyn, infant sister Harriet, and infant brother Robert.

Tillie Meints, 73, of Clara City, died Monday, April 13, 2009 at her home. Her funeral will be 11:00 am, Friday at Bethany Reformed Church in Clara City. Visitation will be from 5-8 pm, Thursday at Harvey Anderson Clara City Funeral Home in Clara City. Memorials preferred to Bethany Reformed Church, Missions or Missions of your choice.

Tillie was born on January 5, 1936, in Erickson Township, Renville County, Minnesota the daughter of George and Lena (Dannen) Caspers. She grew up in the Sacred Heart area, attended District 98 for her elementary schooling and graduated from Sacred Heart High School in 1953.

On June 4, 1954, she was united in marriage to Ivan Meints at Bethany Reformed Church. Following their marriage, they lived in Clara City before moving to their farm near Maynard. They moved back into Clara City 15 years ago. Tillie volunteered at the Clara City Nursing Home, belonged to a quilter’s club, Texas H.O.S.T.S, Homemaker’s Club and M.O.P.S.

She was an active member of Bethany Reformed Church where she was a Sunday school teacher, Bible Study leader, Mentor, Shepherd and was a member of the Esther Circle.

Surviving are her husband of 54 years, Ivan; children, Brad (and Kristine) Meints of Pine Island; Kris (and Greg) Kaihoi of Eden Prairie; Paul (and Donna) Meints of Starkville, MS; eight grandchildren; siblings, Gladys Bestge of Raymond; Martha (and Reuben) Lieser of Worthington and Dalen (and Janice) Caspers of Clara City.

Her parents preceded her in death.

Reuben Donald Sjoberg, age 83 of Willmar died on Sunday, April 12, 2009 at Rice Memorial Hospital in Willmar. Funeral service will be 11:00 am on Thursday at Calvary Lutheran Church in Willmar. Burial will be at Fairview Cemetery in Willmar. Visitation will be from 5-7pm at Harvey Anderson Funeral Home in Willmar and will continue one hour prior to the service.

Reuben Donald Sjoberg was born on February 27, 1926 in Willmar, Minnesota, the son of Albert and Alma (Carlson) Sjoberg. He grew up in the Willmar area where he atteneded country school at Golden Rod District. He then farmed on the family farm in Willmar. He entered the United States Army in January of 1945 and received an Honorable Discharge in December of 1946. Reuben returned to the Willmar area where he began working for the Great Northern Railroad. He was united in marriage to Ethel Gervaise Norbie on October 13, 1951 at Calvary Lutheran Church in Willmar. The couple lived in Willmar and was blessed with five children. Reuben Retired from Burlington Northern Santa Fe Railroad after 39 years of service in 1989.

Reuben was baptized and confirmed at Bethel Lutheran Church in Willmar. He was a member of Calvary Lutheran Church in Willmar. He was a member of the Willmar V.F.W. Post #1639 and member of the Spicer American Legion Post # 545. He enjoyed being outdoors whether gardening, hunting, fishing, and mowing the yard. His family recalls the many stories he would tell about hunting big game in Wyoming, Montana and Colorado.

Reuben is survived by his wife E. Gervaise Sjoberg of Willmar, children: Donna (Elrey) Nielsen of Sunburg, Wayne (Debra) Sjoberg of New London, Susan Sjoberg of Savage, Jann (Brian) Willers of Omaha, NE, Todd (Cindi) Sjoberg of Sunburg; 14 grandchildren, 2 step grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; 8 step-great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandson.

He was preceded in death by his parents, four brothers and one sister and step-granddaughter.

Leona I. Christiansen, 88, of New London, died Thursday, April 9, 2009 at Rice Memorial Hospital in Willmar. Her funeral will be 11:00 am, Wednesday, April 15, 2009 at Peace Lutheran Church in New London. Burial will be in Oak Hill Cemetery in New London. Visitation will be from 5-7 pm, Tuesday at Johnson Funeral Home in New London and continue one hour prior to service at the church.

Leona was born on August 16, 1920, in Huron, South Dakota, the daughter of Arthur and Belle (Gable) Timm. She attended her elementary schooling in Huron and at the age of 15 moved with her family to the New London area where she attended high school. On November 3, 1937, she was united in marriage to Ralph C. Christiansen at United Methodist Church in Willmar. They made their home in rural New London. Leona continued to live in New London following Ralph’s death in 2001 and for the past three years she has been living at GlenOaks.

She was baptized in Huron and was a member of Peace Lutheran Church in New London. She loved spending time with her family and friends - she always had the "coffee-pot-on." She loved to play "Scrabble" - especially with her sister, Loretta - they shared many a good time around the "Scrabble" Board!! Leona enjoyed her time with Peace Lutheran Women, Bible Study and the Peace Quilting Group. Whether she was doing yard work, gardening, tending to her flowers, quilting or wallpapering for others, Leona was always on the go! Her quilts are being used and cherished by many family and friends.

Leona died, Thursday, April 9, 2009 at Rice Memorial Hospital in Willmar. Surviving are her children, Roger Christiansen (and special friend, Cindy Joseph), Arden (and Shari) Christiansen, both of New London; Donna (and Denny) Lund of Yucca Valley, CA; Cortlan (and Charlotte) Christiansen of Faribault; 10 grandchildren and 16 great grandchildren.

Besides her husband and parents, she was preceded in death by her brother, Albert Timm and sisters, Evelyn Cruzon and Loretta Holforty, and an infant grandson, Clayton Christiansen.

 

 

 

Ervin M. Eickhoff, age 83 of Belgrade, died April 8, 2009 at the Paynesville Area Hospital in Paynesville. Mass of Christian Burial will be 10:30 a.m. Monday, April 13, 2009 at St. Francis deSales Catholic Church in Belgrade. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Visitation will be 5:00 to 8:00 p.m. Sunday at the Johnson Funeral Home in Belgrade, where there will be a 5:30 p.m. Men of the Parish Rosary and 7:00 p.m. parish prayer service. Visitation will continue on Monday for an hour prior to the services at the church.

Ervin M. Eickhoff was born on October 24, 1925 in St. Francis, the son of William and Augusta (Hoppe) Eickhoff. He grew up in Belgrade where he attended school. After his schooling he worked on the family farm. On Oct. 17, 1952 he entered the United States Army where he served his country during the Korean Conflict. He was honorably discharged on July 16, 1954 and returned home. He worked in Minneapolis for a few years before returning to Belgrade in 1955 and purchasing the Mobile Station. On June 22, 1957, Ervin was united in marriage to Mary Jane Stern at St. Francis de Sales Catholic Church. To this union two sons and two daughters were born. They made their home in Belgrade where Ervin worked for LSM for 13 years and later Menards, retiring in 1988.

Ervin was a member of St. Francis de Sales Catholic Church. He enjoyed fishing, helping with projects at the VFW and was a proud member of VFW Honor Guard. His family was especially important to him and enjoyed spending time with his grandchildren.

Ervin died on Wednesday, April 8, 2009 at the Paynesville Area Hospital at the age of 83. He is survived by his wife, Mary Jane Eickhoff; children, Steven (Marilyn) Eickhoff of Moorhead, Barbara (David) Hess of Paynesville, Mark (Laurie) Eickhoff of Watertown and Amy (Tom) Porwoll of Rockville; seven grandchildren; siblings, Dick (Sandra) Eickhoff of Bloomington, and Tony (Laura) Eickhoff of Paynesville and brother-in-law Larry Allmaras of Coon Rapids.

Ervin was preceded in death by his siblings, Boniface, Jerome, Elizabeth Nelson and Martha Allmaras.

Leona M. Schroeder, age 103 of New London died on Tuesday, April 7, 2009, at Glen Oaks Care Center in New London. Memorial service will be 11:00 am on Saturday, April 11, 2009, at Hope Presbyterian Church in Spicer. Visitation will be one hour prior to the service at the church. Arrangements are with Johnson Funeral Home in New London.

Leona Mary Schroeder was born on July 13, 1905, in Kossuth, Iowa the oldest daughter of five children to Joseph and Wilhelmina Andrews. The family lived in Iowa, Nebraska, and South Dakota when Leona was growing up. Their father was going to school and interning in the Presbyterian Ministry and this resulted in living in several different locations. She attended school in Waterloo, Nebraska, and graduated high school in Randolph, Nebraska; she then attended the Wayne State Teachers College where she received her teaching certificate. Her first teaching job was at Newman Grove, Nebraska for three years and then taught in DeSmet, South Dakota.

Leona was united in marriage to Harold Schroeder on June 28, 1932, at her father’s church in Miller, South Dakota. Harold was a teacher and coach in the Clark South Dakota school system. The couple lived and worked in Clark for three years and then moved to Lemmon in 1935, where Harold became the coach, teacher and principal of the school. One daughter, Janet was blessed to this union. Harold passed away in 1950, and Leona resumed her teaching career by teaching third grade in Lemmon. In 1955, the family moved to Huron, South Dakota where Leona taught third grade for the next 15 years. During that time, she had completed a Bachelors Degree at Wayne State Teachers College. After retiring in 1970, Leona moved to New London where she has lived for the past 39 years.

She was an active member of Hope Presbyterian Church in Spicer where she served as Deacon and was in HPW. She was also a member of PEO and Alpha Kappa Gamma.

Leona enjoyed playing Dominoes, cards and was a member of a bridge club. She traveled with many of her teacher friends touring the US, Canada, Europe, the Holy Land, and Hawaii. Leona’s family was very important to her and she especially enjoyed spending time with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

She is survived by her daughter Janet (and Pat) Saulsbury of Spicer; granddaughter Kris (and Paul) Danielson, three great-grandchildren and brother Wendell (and Harriet) Andrews of Sioux Falls, SD.

She was preceded in death by her husband, two brothers Ralph and Loren, and sister Ruth Goudie and grandson Guy Patrick Saulsbury.
  Shirley Jean Buhr, age 68 of Willmar, passed away on April 6, 2009 at her home in Willmar. Funeral service will be 1:30pm on Thursday at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Clara City. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Visitation will be one hour prior to the service. Arrangements are with Harvey Anderson Funeral Home in Willmar.

Shirley was born the youngest of three children to George Buhr and Lena (Miller) Buhr in Clara City, MN on June 6, 1940.
Shirley was confirmed in the Immanuel Lutheran Church of Clara City and graduated from the Clara City High School. She lived with her parents in Clara City and later moved to Montevideo where she lived with her mother. She was employed at the Red Owl supermarket in Montevideo. In 1984, she moved to Willmar and worked at Jennie-O Foods, Inc. from where she retired in 2004.

She is survived by her; sister, Marlene (Buhr) Tabatt; sister-in-law Delores (Hubel) Buhr; niece Sharon Neagbour (Jeffrey) Nelson; nephews, James (Mary) Buhr, Steven Buhr, Daniel Buhr and James Neagbour; great nieces Jocelyn Nelson, Alicia Nelson, Megan Buhr, and great nephews: Michael Nelson, Jason Buhr, Colt Buhr.

Shirley was preceded in death by her parents and her brother, Harold Buhr.

Alben G. (Swede) Swenson, 103, of Brooten, died on Monday morning, April 6, 2009, at the Belgrade Nursing Home. Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Thursday at the Johnson Funeral Home in Belgrade. Burial will be at Our Savior Lutheran Cemetery in rural Brooten. A visitation will be held one hour prior to the service at the funeral home.

Alben George Swenson was born July 29, 1905 in Brooten to the late Sam and Anna Swenson who operated a farm 1½ miles west of Brooten. He was baptized and confirmed in Our Saviours Lutheran Church, and graduated from Brooten High School in 1924. On July 22, 1937 Alben was married to Verna Juliet Knutson and they shared 64 years together.

Alben was manager of Swift & Company in Brooten for 19 years and worked in Minneapolis at the FMC Corporation for 17 years. He was an active member of Our Saviours Lutheran Church.

Alben was preceded in death by his wife, Verna, parents and sisters Olga, Selma and Effie. He is survived by two daughters Georgine Meyer, Randolph, New Jersey and Sonja Davison, Corning, California; two grandchildren, Christopher (Cathleen) Meyer, Durango, Colorado and Melinda (Richard) Speciale, Stamford, Connecticut; sisters-in-law Harriette Peterson, Spicer and Donna Knutson, Terrace; brothers-in-law Earl (Lorraine) Knutson, Terrace and Howard (Paulette) Knutson, Alaska. Numerous nieces and nephews also survive Alben.

 

Johanna Bothof, age 100 of Belgrade, died Monday, April 6, 2009 at the Belgrade Nursing Home. Funeral services will be 11:00 a.m. Saturday, April 11, 2009 at the Brooten Community Church in Brooten. Burial will be in the Bethany Cemetery in Brooten. Visitation will be 4:00 -7:00 p.m. Friday at the Johnson Funeral Home in Belgrade and for one hour prior to the services at the church. Memorials may be given to Brooten Community Church, Hospice or the Belgrade Nursing Home.

Johanna Bothof was born on Sept 26, 1908 in Hull, IA, the daughter of John and Bertha (Bos) Zeylemaker. She grew up in Orange City, Lester and Leota, IA, attending Leota Christian School. Her family later moved to Chandler, MN. On Dec 6, 1929 Johanna was united in marriage to Gerrit Bothof. To this union 5 sons and 5 daughters were born. They farmed near Dune, IA and later Melvin, IA. In 1934 they moved to Boyden, IA and in 1943 they moved Woodstock, MN where they farmed until moving to Belgrade in 1953. They continued to farm until 1968 when they began work for Jennie-O Foods in Willmar until their retirement in 1979. Together, they enjoyed retirement, traveling, delivering Meal on Wheels and wintering in Arizona. Johanna also enjoyed sewing, gardening and crocheting. Johanna and Gerrit were able to share in 74 years of marriage before Gerrit’s death on Aug. 19, 2004.

Johanna was a member of the Christian Reformed Church in Brooten where she was active in the Senior Citizens Bible Study. She was also a charter member of the American Reformed Church in Woodstock and West Valley Reformed Church in Sun City, AZ.

Johanna died on Monday, April 6, 2009 at the Belgrade Nursing Home at the age of 100. She is survived by her children, John Bothof of Arizona City, AZ, Willard (Jean) Bothof of Phoenix, AZ, Bertha Thompson of Seal Beach, CA, Hattie Jean (Cliff) McCann of Belgrade, Connie Thompson (James Gray) of Phoenix, AZ, David (Sue) Bothof of Pewaukee, WI and Donna Herzberg of Paynesville; 28 grandchildren; 51 great-grandchildren; 16 great-great-grandchildren; sister, Nellie Groot of Hemit, CA; daughters-in-law, Gertrude Bothof of Brookfield, WI and Marge Bothof of Delphi, IN.

Johanna was preceded in death by her husband, Gerrit; two sons, Gerald and Marion; daughter, Albertha; grandson, Charles Bothof; great-granddaughter, Jessica Villalobos; sons-in-law, Michael Ogdahl, Ray Thompson and Vince English; and four sisters.

  Kathryn S. Lura, 87, of Paynesville died on Saturday, April 4, 2009 at Koronis Manor in Paynesville. A memorial service will be held at 1:00 pm on Saturday, April 18, 2009, at Paynesville Lutheran Church. Interment will be at Ft. Snelling Cemetery in Minneapolis. A visitation will be held for one hour prior to the service at the church.
Arthur Anderson, 95, of Belgrade died on Friday, April 03, 2009, at Koronis Manor in Paynesville. Funeral services will be at 2:00 pm, Tuesday, at Grace Lutheran Church in Belgrade. Burial will be at Grace Lutheran West Cemetery. A visitation will be held Tuesday from 12-2:00 pm at the church.

Arthur Anderson was born on December 13, 1913, in Crow River Township, near Belgrade. He was the youngest of eight children born to Lars and Sarah (Olsen) Anderson. He grew up on the family farm and attended a country school that was located on it.  His mother and father emigrated from Norway and settled down to farm in the Belgrade area. Arthur farmed the family farm where he raised turkeys, pigs and later dairy cattle.

In August of 2003, Arthur left the farm and became a resident at Koronis Manor in Paynesville.  Arthur was a member of Grace Lutheran Church in Belgrade. As an infant, he was baptized and later confirmed into the Christian faith by Rev. A. H. Hoyme, at Zion Lutheran Church in Belgrade.

Arthur was a very quiet man however, his love for animals could always spark a conversation. He had a smile and twinkle in his eye that would always light up a room. Arthur’s family will remember that although he was quiet he always found small ways to let you know he cared.

Arthur Anderson died on Friday, April 3, 2009 at Koronis Manor in Paynesville. He is survived by many loving nieces and nephews.

Arthur was preceded in death by his parents; brothers, Thomas, Joseph, and Lawrence; sisters, Josie Anderson, Lila Mayavski, Jennie Hendrickson, and Ovila Thorp.
