Lucille E. Carlson, 89, of Willmar, died Sunday, September 21, 2008 at Rice Care Center in Willmar. Her funeral will be held at 11:00 am, Wednesday at Bethel Lutheran Church in Willmar with burial in Cloverleaf Cemetery. Visitation will be from 5-7 pm, Tuesday at Harvey Anderson Funeral Home in Willmar and continue one hour prior to service at the church.

Lucille Eleanore Lindblad was born March 9, 1919 in Kandiyohi County, Fahlun Township, to Clarence and Minnie (Lundquist) Lindblad. Lucille was baptized April 20, 1919. She attended District 68 School in Fahlun Township. Lucille and Newell were married on September 4, 1943 at the Svea Lutheran Church. They lived in Lake Elizabeth Township until 1947, at which time they moved to Willmar. Lucy worked as a store clerk at the Svea Store and Reidel’s/Hogans in Willmar until 1981.

Lucille and Newell were blessed with three sons. Lucy’s pride and joy were her boys!  Often their home was filled with voices and laughter of family and friends. Events such as family birthday celebrations, holiday gatherings, card parties with neighbors and friends, as well as church gatherings; to name but a few.  Gathering family and friends together around a table – was always a highlight for Lucy.

Lucy was in her glory when she prepared meals for those she loved! Her grandchildren loved her “s’getti” and tator tot hot dishes! Lucy’s cookie plate was always filled with a myriad of sweet treats for coffee time! Her turkey dinners, apple pies, blueberry muffins, and raisin oatmeal cookies were just a few of her fabulous creations! Family traditions of making Flatbread (Lucy’s was the thinnest in the state!), her Lefse (made with Primost, a goat milk cheese, which was the ‘magic’ ingredient for the filling to make it the very best!), and of course Ostkaka (Larry even tried making this milk custard a few times for his mom) were kept alive for the family by Lucy at Christmastime. Lucy’s sandbakkels and rosettes would melt in your mouth! Ice cream bars in the shapes of Christmas trees and snowmen became a regular holiday treat Lucy always had on hand for her grandkids!

Lucy loved wearing bright colors, especially the color red. It was a rare event if Lucy was without a necklace and matching earrings, and with a touch of lipstick, she was ready for the day.

‘Grandma Lucy’ was blessed with five granddaughters and four grandsons. Lucy’s interest in sports, particularly baseball and basketball, connected her in a special way to her grandchildren. A deck of cards was always within reach to play “Kings in the Corner”.

Her volunteer services at Bethel Lutheran Church included altar committee, sewing quilts, helping with the Bethel Beam, serving and providing food for many church events, and greeting members on Sunday mornings. Lucy was a member of Bethel Circle for many years. She and Newell enjoyed traveling with church friends on many Bethel bus excursions. A well-loved Bethel tradition Lucy especially enjoyed was the Lucia Day Festival every December. Into a darkened church walked young women wearing crowns of light on their heads to begin a day of festivity.

Lucy and Newell celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary in September of 2003. Lucy moved to Sunrise Village Assisted Living in 2004, after Newell passed away the previous December. She made many new friends and re-connected with long-time acquaintances at Sunrise Village. As she developed more serious health concerns, she moved to Rice Care Center.

A week before Lucy slipped away from this world, Ryan and Jessi brought their twins, Theran and Keenan to meet their Great Grandma Lucy! Beth brought little Cayden to visit great grandma too… showing off his new accomplishment… walking!

Recently while Lucy was hospitalized, she received a Sunday bulletin from Bethel. While the Service of Healing was read to her, Lucy seemed calm and at peace, as she listened to the familiar and comforting words. “We go in peace to serve the Lord, we feel like traveling on.”

She is survived by her sister, Dorothy (Al) Ostby of Detroit Lakes; sons – Larry (Gloria) Carlson of Brooklyn Park, Loren (Jackie) Carlson of Edina and Bob (Anita) Carlson of St. Cloud. Grandchildren – Laura (Mike) Kramer, Rachel (Andy) Johnson; Katie and Nate; Ryan (Jessi), Chris, Cole, Bethany, and Bao Li. Lucy is preceded in death by her parents, and siblings, Maynard, Ruth, Donald, Marge, and Earl.
