Patricia Kay Nelson, 55, of Willmar died Friday at her home. Her funeral service will be 10:30 am, Monday at Vinje Lutheran Church in Willmar. Interment will be in St. Mary’s Catholic Cemetery in Alexandria. Visitation will be Sunday from 5-7:00 pm, at Harvey Anderson Funeral Home in Willmar and on Monday one hour prior to the service at the church.

Patricia Kay Nelson was born March 10, 1955, in Alexandria, MN, the daughter of Albin C. and Evelyn H. (Schwandt) Hartung. She grew up in Alexandria and attended St. Mary’s Catholic School and graduated from Jefferson High School in 1973. Following her graduation, she attended Anoka Technical College, where she received her Associates Degree to become an Occupational Therapy Assistant. On June 23, 1979, Patricia was united in marriage to John Alan Nelson at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Alexandria, MN. To this union two children were born, Kierre Marie and John Ryan. Following their marriage they lived in Cold Spring, MN, Washington, DC, Houston and Dallas, TX, prior to moving to Willmar 1993. Pat worked as an activities assistant at Bethesda Pleasantview Nursing Home for the past 5 ½ years and also part-time as a sales associate at Herberger’s.

Pat was a daughter, sister, mother, wife, aunt, godmother, coworker, and friend, but above all she was a fighter. She fought a twelve-year courageous battle with cancer with dignity and without complaint. She always showed unconditional love and patience for those around her. She spent numerous hours in her vegetable garden growing cucumbers and tomatoes, her favorite foods. She loved to read, watch Disney movies, and enjoyed the magic of fairytales. One of her many passions was providing creative activities for the residents of Bethesda Pleasantview Nursing Home. She was a miraculous lady who lived everyday to the fullest – she will be dearly missed.

Pat is survived by her husband, John of Willmar; daughter, Dr. Kierre Nelson and her husband, Jonathan Hedberg of Madison, WI; son, John Ryan of Willmar; her parents Albin and Evelyn Hartung of Alexandria; sisters, Bev (and Richard) Linnes of Mankato, Donna Affeldt (and Clifford Zins) of Alexandria, Mari (and William) Leuthner of Alexandria; mother-in-law, Joan Nelson of Willmar; and several nieces, nephews and other relatives and friends.

She was preceded in death by her grandparents and her father-in-law, Leroy T. Nelson.

Harley Rose Fank, infant daughter of Donovan and Nicole Fank of Sunburg died Thursday July 29, 2010 at the University of Minnesota Amplatz Children’s Hospital surrounded by her loving family. Funeral service will be 10:30am on Monday at Hope Lutheran Church in Sunburg. Burial will be in West Norway Lake Lutheran Cemetery. Visitation will be one hour prior to the service. Arrangements are with Harvey Anderson Funeral Home in Willmar.

Harley Rose was born on July 21, 2010 to Donovan and Nicole (Hauge) Fank. She was bapitzed on July 29, 2010 into the Christian faith. Harley Rose touched our lives from the minute she was born and will forever remain in our hearts.

She is survived by her mother and father, brother Kyle, grandparents: Gordon and Patricia Hauge of Sunburg and Sandra Fank of Olivia; great-grandparents: Florence Smith of Kerkhoven and Lucile Fank of Olivia and many aunts, uncles and cousins.

She was preceded in death by her grandfather Donald Fank.

  Troy W. Donnay, 48, of Colorado Springs, CO, died Saturday, July 10, 2010 at Memorial Hospital in Colorado Springs. A memorial service will be held at 1:00pm Monday August 2, 2010 at Johnson Funeral Home in New London. Burial will be at Salem Lutheran Cemetery in Comfrey. A visitation will be held for one hour prior to the service at the funeral home.

Troy William Donnay was born on June 13, 1962, in Minneapolis, MN, the son of Larry and Gail (Buffington) Donnay. He was baptized and confirmed at Salem Lutheran Church in Comfrey. Troy lived with his parents in Savage, MN until his mom passed away. He then moved to Comfrey to live with his grandmother Ruth Buffington. He attended elementary and graduated high school from Comfrey High School. After high school he went on to attend South West Minnesota State College in Marshall. In 2000 troy moved to Colorado Springs where he managed the Cheyenne Mountain Liquor Store. He was immediately accepted and treated as part of the owners (Choi’s) family.

Troy enjoyed having pets, target shooting, gardening, and making wine.

In the mid 90’s Troy had a heart valve transplant and he died on July 10, 2010 of complications with the valve. He is survived by his father, Larry; uncles, Bill (Debbie) Buffington, Bob (Joyce) Buffington, Glenn (Joyce) Donnay, aunt, Diane (Richard) Capaul; many cousins and friends. Troy was preceded in death by his mother, Gail, and uncle, Ross.

Margaret “Marge” Kennard, 84, of Willmar, died Saturday, July 24, 2010 at Rice Care Center in Willmar. Her funeral will be 10:30 am, Wednesday, July 28, 2010 at Willmar Christian Reformed Church in Willmar. Burial will be in Cloverleaf Cemetery. Visitation will be Tuesday from 5-7 pm at Harvey Anderson Funeral Home in Willmar and continue one hour prior to the service at the church on Wednesday.

Marge was born on February 28, 1926, in Munster, Indiana, the daughter of John and Catherine (Hoogeveen) DeVries. She grew up in Hammond, IN, where she graduated from high school. She was united in marriage to Amos Kennard on October 9, 1947. She was the secretary for IHB Railroad for several years and then taught stenography and English at Illiana Christian High School where she also managed the bookstore. After moving to Willmar in 1973 she worked for the Willmar Reminder for 11 years and 18 years as the secretary at Willmar Christian Reformed Church. Marge was the manager of the Kandiyohi County Chapter of the American Red Cross for several years.

She was an active member of her church throughout the years, teaching Sunday school and Release Time classes, member of Ladies Circle and Women’s Missionary Union and Senior’s Bible Study.

Marge enjoyed knitting, crocheting, reading, crossword puzzles and especially enjoyed playing games and cards with family and friends. They had a cabin on Lake of the Woods where she like to fish and spend time with family and the many friends who would come to visit.

Surviving are her son, Alan (and Lois) Kennard of Willmar; granddaughter, Michelle (and Rory) Wilson; great grandchildren, Matthew and Hannah Wilson; her brother, Lester (and Gladys) DeVries of Kalamazoo, MI and sister, Betty (and Rev. Homer) Wigboldy of Lynden, WA.

She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, Amos in 1979; brother and sister-in-law, Clayton and Wilma DeVries and sister, Anna DeVries.

Jim Erickson, 74, formerly of Willmar, died on December 15, 2009. Graveside services will be 10:00 am on Saturday, July 31, 2010 at Fairview Cemetery in Willmar. Lunch to follow at the United Methodist Church in Willmar. Arrangements are with Harvey Anderson Funeral Home in Willmar.

James Owen Ericson, “Jim”, was born July 2, 1935 as the 2nd son to Harold L. and Ella Louise (Benson) Ericson. He graduated from Hector High School in 1953 and attended South Dakota School of Mines. He spent much of his life in Willmar, Minnesota. He was married for 37 years to Joan (Anderson) Ericson who passed away in 1999.

Jim and Joan have 4 children and 4 grandchildren, son, Dale Ericson of Phoenix, daughter and son-in-law, Del Ericson and Curt Mancuso, of Buffalo, NY, her children, William James (BJ) Ericson-Neilsen, Elaina & Taren Mancuso, daughter, Diane Owen of Mesa, AZ, and daughter, Darla Ericson and her daughter, Samantha Joan Ericson of Phoenix, AZ. Jim is survived by two brothers and 3 sister in-laws, Chuck and Rosie Ericson of Willmar, MN and Rolfe and Nancy Ericson of Bemidji, MN, Lois (Anderson) Perullo of Danvers, MA and 8 nieces and nephews. He traveled extensively through out his life for work and play. He was a 3rd generation telephone engineer, a Founder and Board Member of CSI and its spin off companies. Jim retired in 1978 after a debilitating heart attack, but remained very active in the business. In 2001, Jim moved to Arizona. Jim loved to spend time with family and friends at Eagle Lake, walking, boating, snowmobiling; laughing and telling stories all the way.

Mildred Frances Blom 99, died Monday June 28, 2010 at Bethesda Pleasantview. Services will be 2:00 pm July 21, 2010 at Bethel Lutheran Church with burial in the church cemetery. Visitation will be one hour prior to the service at the church. Arrangements are with Harvey Anderson Funeral Home.Mildred

She was born December 10, 1910 in Minneapolis to Martin and Minnie Gilman. She grew up in Detroit Lakes, where she played hockey and basketball in high school. She attended Hamline University and business college in the Twin Cities. After her marriage to Leonard Blom on Christmas Eve, 1933, she moved to Willmar, where Leonard worked as a court reporter and later served as Kandiyohi County Clerk of Court.

Mildred was a devoted wife, mother, and grandmother, and had a wide circle of friends. She was active in Bethel Lutheran Church and other local groups, including Ladies Aid, Sewing Circle, the Willmar Garden Study Club, and the Fine Arts Study Club. She was famous for her thoughtfulness, hospitality, and wonderful cooking, and was an avid fan of the Minnesota Twins.

She is survived by her daughters, Lorraine (Neil) Hofland and Marilyn Blom, and numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by husband Leonard in 1988 and great-grandson Corey Hofland in 1994.

LeRoy William Carlson, 87, of Lake Lillian, died on Monday, July 12, 2010 at Bethesda Pleasantview in Willmar. His memorial service will be 10:30 am, Thursday, July 29, 2010 at Tripolis Evangelical Lutheran Church, rural Kandiyohi. Arrangements are with Harvey Anderson Funeral Home in Willmar.

LeRoy was born on October 17, 1922, the son of William and Alice (Sharstrom) Carlson. He was baptized and confirmed at Tripolis Evangelical Lutheran Church and attended Atwater High School. Following his schooling, LeRoy served in the United States Navy during WW II, spenind 37 months overseas. After his discharge, LeRoy worked as a union welder and had lived in Colorado, Wyoming, and different cities in Minnesota before moving back to Lake Lillian in 1996. He was a 50 year Mason of the Masonic Lodge in Fergus Falls and also was a member of the VFW and American Legion.

Surviving are his children, Gary Carlson of Cody, WY; Carey Carlson of Minneapolis; Greg (and Olya) Carlson of Scottsdale, AZ; Carl Carlson of Mora, MN and Joel Carlson of the Twin Cities; nine grandchildren and his sister, Luella Larson of Lake Lillian.

He was preceded in death by his parents; daughter, Deanna Lynn Carlson; three brothers and three sisters, Melvin, Reuben, Harold, Mildred, Ellen and Elphie.

Merle Arthur Weflen, 84, of Spicer, formerly of Clara City died Monday, July 12, 2010 at Paynesville Area Hospital. His funeral will be 11:00 am, Friday, July 16, 2010 at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Clara City. Burial will be in the church cemetery with military honors by American Legion Post #485 of Clara City. Visitation will be one hour prior to the service at the church. Arrangements are with Harvey Anderson Clara City Funeral Home.

Merle was born on September 24, 1925, in Clara City, Minnesota, the son of Elvin and Cassie (Broers) Weflen. He grew up in Clara City attending Clara City Schools, graduating in 1943. He continued his education at Augsburg College and University of North Dakota – Grand Forks. He enlisted into the United States Navy, serving from 1944 – 1946.

On September 24, 1949, he was united in marriage to Jacquelyn Doris Barnett in Louisville, Kentucky. Following their marriage, they lived in Clara City where Merle owned and operated Weflen Elevator for the next 43 years, retiring in 1990. In 2006, Merle and Jackie moved to Spicer. He was a member of American Legion Post #485 in Clara City and had been a member of the VFW Post in Montevideo. He also served many years on the Clara City Fire Department. His family recalls his love of pheasant hunting and watching sports, especially when his children and grandchildren were playing.

He was baptized at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Clara City and confirmed on April 28, 1940. Merle was a lifetime member of Immanuel Lutheran Church.

Survivors are his wife, Jackie of Spicer; children, Richard (and Patsy) Weflen of Greenville, MS; Charles Weflen of Willmar; Dean (and Sharon) Weflen of Hudsonville, MI; Carol (and Terry) Schaefer of Paynesville, MN; Margie Riley (and fiancé, Brad Guck) of Plymouth; 20 grandchildren and 10 great grandchildren. Also surviving are his brother, Arnold Weflen of Phoenix, AZ; sister-in-law, Phyllis Weflen of Aberdeen, SD and daughter-in-law, Cathy Weflen of Fullerton, CA.

He was preceded in death by his parents; son, Jim Weflen; grandson, Anthony Weflen and brother, Ervin.


Elmer Gordon “Gordy” Gravgaard, age 77 of Willmar died on Friday, July 9, 2010 at his home in Willmar. Funeral service will be 1:00 pm on Monday at Calvary Lutheran Church in Willmar. Burial will be at Cloverleaf Cemetery in Willmar. Visitation will be from 5:00 to 7:00 pm on Sunday at Harvey Anderson Funeral Home in Willmar and will continue one hour prior to the service at the church on Monday.

He was born November 10, 1932 at Vallejo, CA to Elmer and Selma (Haarstad) Gravgaard. His family settled in Spicer in 1946. He was confirmed at Green Lake Lutheran Church in 1948. He graduated from Willmar HS in 1951 and enlisted in the U.S. Navy on July 10, 1951. He then enlisted in the U.S. Air Force on May 8, 1961 and retired in 1971.

On February 28, 1953, he married Margaret Anderson. Throughout his time in the service, they lived in many places, finally serving at Grand Forks AFB where Gordy retired after 22 years of service.

Gordy and his family settled in Willmar in 1971 where he worked for Sears as a service technician. He taught briefly at the Vo Tech and owned Gordy’s TV in downtown Willmar with his brother-in-law Rodney Anderson. He worked for Minnesota AAA for 12 years before retiring.

Gordy was an active member of Calvary Lutheran Church since 1971 where he served as a Sunday school teacher, Cub Scout leader, Stewardship Board, and Board of Outreach; he enjoyed the Tuesday men’s bible study, and was an usher for many years. He was also on the LMM board for two terms. Community involvement included the Lions Club International and he was a member of the American Legion.

Gordy enjoyed camping, fishing, riding bike, and playing cards with friends and family. He loved hockey, especially watching his sons and granddaughters play. He also enjoyed traveling to visit friends and family around the country.

Survivors include his wife Margaret, a daughter and three sons; Timothy (Maureen) of Elizabeth City, NC, Barbara (Joel) Nevin of Sioux Falls, SD, David (Ronna) of Vacaville, CA, and Steven (and Shelly) of Faribault; eight grandchildren: Alissa (Scott) Norsten, Kali (Steven) Jensen, Aimee Gravgaard, Devin Gravgaard, Haleigh Gravgaard, Rachel Nevin, Josh Nevin, Becca Nevin; two great-grandchildren: Madison Norsten, Makayla Norsten; brother, Kenneth (Lien) of Midlothian, VA; and three nephews.

His parents, a brother, and his infant son, Daniel preceded him in death.

Bill Henriksen, 63, of Willmar, died Tuesday, June 29, 2010 at his home. His funeral will be 10:00 am, Saturday, July 3, 2010 at Eagle Lake Lutheran Church, rural Willmar. Visitation will be from 5-7 pm, Friday, July 2, 2010 at Harvey Anderson Funeral Home in Willmar and continue one hour prior to the service at the church on Saturday. Military Honors will be provided by American Legion Post #167 of Willmar.

Arthur William “Bill” Henriksen was born on October 30, 1946, in Newport News, Virginia, the son of Arthur and Pearl (Shappell) Henriksen. While Bill was young his family lived in Chicago before settling in Des Moines, Iowa for Bill’s elementary years before moving to Lombard, Illinois and finally to Kenyon, Minnesota where he graduated from high school in 1964. He enlisted into the United States Army on December 13, 1965 serving until December 2, 1968 when he was Honorably Discharged and returned home to his parent’s farm.

On September 12, 1970, he was united in marriage to Vickie Koehnen in Waconia. Bill and Vickie have lived and worked in the Willmar area their entire life other than spending ten years in Alexandria. He was a past President of Douglas County Pork Producers, a baseball coach and a member of the Wood Carvers of Willmar.

He was a past member of St. John’s Lutheran Church, near Pennock where he had served on the church council, was a youth counselor and currently is a member of Eagle Lake Lutheran Church.

Surviving are his wife, Vickie of Willmar; children, Stacie (and Jay) Trombley of Montrose; Brent (and Susan) Henriksen and Casey (and Jeremy) Dirkes both of Willmar; 10 grandchildren, Conner, Victoria, Payton and Paige Trombley; Kadin, Lauren and Carter Dirkes; Bria, Kenna and Lilly Henriksen. Also surviving are his parents, Arthur and Pearl Henriksen of Pennock; sister, Janet (and Ed) Sonicker of Annandale and mother-in-law, Lillian Koehnen of Willmar.

He was preceded in death by his grandparents and father-in-law, Alvin Koehnen.


Elizabeth “Betty” A. Peterson 83, of New London died on Friday, June 25, 2010, at GlenOaks Care Center in New London. A funeral service will be held at 11:00 am on Monday, July 5, 2010 at Peace Lutheran Church in New London. Burial will be at Fairview Cemetery in Willmar. A visitation will be held for one hour prior to the service at the church. Services are entrusted to Johnson Funeral Home in New London.

Betty Peterson, 83, of New London, passed away June 25th, at Glen Oaks Care Center, after a long illness. Betty was the daughter of Malvin B. and Effie O. (Solverson) Westphal. She was born and raised in Willmar, MN and graduated from Willmar High School in 1944. She graduated from Augsburg College in Minneapolis, MN in 1948. She was united in marriage to her high school sweetheart, Robert D. Peterson, also of Willmar, in June of 1948. After a short stay in Minneapolis, Bob and Betty made their home in New London, MN, where Betty obtained a teaching position at New London High School. She became a fulltime mother and homemaker in 1951.

Betty was active in her church, Trinity/Peace Lutheran in New London, where she was a longtime member and soloist in the church choir. She taught Sunday School, was a Bible study leader, and she completed the rigorous requirements of the Bethel Bible Study Program. After her four sons were old enough, Betty clerked part-time at the New London Post Office for many years, where her husband, Bob, was the postmaster. After their retirement, Betty travelled extensively with her husband, all over the U.S. and around the world.

Betty was pre-deceased by her parents, her brother Calvin Westphal of Omaha, NE, her sister Carolyn Westphal of Renville and Willmar, and her beloved husband, Bob Peterson, who died just 11 weeks before Betty. She is survived by her four sons, Todd (and Ellen) Peterson of West Chester, PA; Timm Peterson of New London; Terry (and Peg) Peterson of Spicer; and Troy (and Robin) Peterson of Brookfield, WI. Betty also leaves behind 13 grandchildren and two great-children. Her surviving siblings are Maurice Westphal of Siren, WI: Rev. Bruce (and Beryl) Westphal of New Brighton, MN; Craig Westphal of Bloomington, MN: and sister-in-law, Voni Westphal of Omaha, NE, and a host of other relatives and lifelong friends.

Elmer C. Gilbertson, age 89 of Hawick, died Tuesday, June 29, 2010 at the St. Cloud Hospital. A memorial services will be held 11:00 a.m. Monday, July 5, 2010 at Word of Faith Family Church in Willmar. Visitation will be held one hour prior to the service. Burial will be in the Benson City Cemetery. Arrangements are with the Johnson Funeral Home in New London.

Elmer C. Gilbertson was born on May 6, 1921 in Clontarf, the son of Edward and Clara (Davidson) Gilbertson. He grew up in the Benson and Clontarf area where he attended country grade school. He was baptized and confirmed at West Zion Lutheran Church north of Benson. After his schooling he worked as a blacksmith with his father in Clontarf, before moving to the cities. He then entered the United States Army and served his country during WWII. Upon his honorable discharge he returned to the cities and worked as a welder for Gardner Hardware until his retirement. After retirement, he moved to Hawick where he enjoyed spending time with all his grandchildren, working on cars and watching stock car racing.

Elmer died on Tuesday, June 29, 2010 at the St. Cloud Hospital at the age of 89. He is survived by two sons, Jerroll (Connie) Rice of New London, and Derek Grubbs (friend, Anita Anderson) of Hawick; seven grandchildren and thirteen great-grandchildren.

Elmer is preceded in death by his parents and two brothers, Robert and Wallace Gilbertson.

Raymond A. Werder, age 86 of Willmar died on June 28, 2010 at Bethesda Heritage Center in Willmar. Funeral service will be 1:00pm on Thursday at Redeemer Lutheran church in Willmar. Burial will be at Cloverleaf Cemetery in Willmar. Visitation will be from 5:00 - 7:00pm on Wednesday at Harvey Anderson Funeral Home in Willmar and will continue one hour prior to the service the church on Thursday.

Raymond Arthur Werder was born on June 15, 1924 in Hutchinson, Minnesota, the son of Arthur and Martha (Maas) Werder. He grew up in Willmar, Minnesota where he attended school. He enlisted in the United States Navy in April of 1943. He was stationed in the Asiatic-Pacific Theater during WWII where he served with the SeaBee Battalion. Ray received an Honorable Discharge in February of 1946.

Ray returned to Willmar and was united in marriage to Marian Edwardson on September 20, 1947 at Redeemer Lutheran Church in Willmar. He was employed by Perkin’s Lumber Company in Willmar and later worked for Willmar Municipal Utilities as an engineer.

Ray was a member of Redeemer Lutheran Church in Willmar where he had served as an usher. He was a member of the Willmar American Legion Post #167.

Ray enjoyed wood working and fishing. He especially enjoyed spending time with his family at their cabin on Games Lake. His family remembers the many holidays they would spend together, including flying kites and hunting for eggs over Easter.

Ray is survived by his wife Marian Werder of Willmar; daughters: Marcia (and Curt) Conklin of Atwater, Karen (and Dan) Gorans of Willmar, and Debbie (and Curt) Swart of Prinsburg; eight grandchildren: Julie (and Robert) Heaton of Sparks, NV, Jeff (and Tracy) Conklin of Maple Grove, Jared Conklin of St. Cloud, Melanie Gorans, Minneapolis, Emily Gorans of Svea, Justin (and Amy) Swart of Grand Forks, ND, Lacey Swart of Willmar and Jordan Swart of Prinsburg; four great-granddaughters: Kaelynn, Ella, Madysen and Tangh. He is also survived by his brother, Melvin (and Violet) Werder and sister, Garnet Bockelman both of Willmar and several nieces, nephews and other relatives.

Ray was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers and three sisters.

Henry M. Bidwell, age 87 of New London, died Monday, June 28, 2010 at GlenOaks Care Center in New London. Funeral services will be 11:00 a.m. Thursday, July 1, 2010 at Peace Lutheran Church in New London. Burial will be in Oak Hill Cemetery. Visitation will be 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. Wednesday at the Johnson Funeral Home in New London and for one hour prior to the service at the church.

Henry Miles Bidwell was born on August 30, 1922, in St. Cloud the son of Jerrie and Lula (Dilley) Bidwell. He grew up on the family farm in Irving Township where he attended country grade school in district # 6. After his schooling he worked in a CCC camp in Big Fork. He later moved to California where he worked in a defense plant during WWII. He returned to Minnesota and began farming for a short time before working with the State Fisheries Dept. On July 16, 1960, he was united in marriage to Eleanor Otterness. To this union one daughter was born. They made their home near New London where they farmed until his retirement in 1988. In retirement he worked for Hanson Silo. Henry and Eleanor were able to share in 50 years of marriage. Henry was a member of Peace Lutheran Church. He enjoyed farming, feeding the pigeons on the farm, fishing and bowling.

Henry died on June 28, 2010 at GlenOaks Care Center at the age of 87. He is survived by his wife, Eleanor; daughter, Debbie (Jim) Hanson of Pelican Rapids; two grandchildren, Megan and Matthew; step-children, David Lindner of New London, Diane Lindner of Maple Plain, Doug Lindner of New London, Donna Miller (fiancé, Dale Ritz) of Atwater, Darrell (Sandy) Lindner of Kandiyohi and Dirk (Micki) Lindner of Hudson, WI; eleven step-grandchildren ; thirteen step-great-grandchildren; and four sisters, Violet (Earl) Manson of New London, Evangeline (Otis) Schwartz of Willmar, Isabel Monson of Wellington, KS and Celia (Walter) DeGroot of Little Falls.

Henry was preceded in death by his daughter from his first marriage, Karen; step-grandchild, Tamara; parents; three brothers and three sisters.

David P. deCathelineau, age 76, of Willmar died on Sunday, June 20, 2010 at Rice Memorial Hospital in Willmar. His funeral service will be 2:00 pm, Friday at Tripolis Lutheran Church, rural Kandiyohi. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Visitation will be from 6-8:00 pm, Thursday at Harvey Anderson Funeral Home in Willmar and will continue one hour prior to the service at the church on Friday.

David Pierre deCathelineau was born on February 11, 1934 in Willmar, Minnesota, the son of Herve and Irene (Dale) deCathelineau. He grew up in Willmar where he attended school. He farmed with his family and in January of 1957, he entered the United States Army where he served during the Korean War. David received an Honorable Discharge in November of 1958. He returned to Willmar where he continued to farm. He was united in marriage to Mary Louise Berg on March 16, 1962 in Milbank, South Dakota. They hobby farmed in the Willmar area and David also worked construction for Duininck Brothers for 27 years before retiring in 1996. Mary passed away on September 10, 1996. As David’s health failed, his daughter felt very fortunate to help care for him for the last three years.

David was baptized and confirmed in the Lutheran Faith and was a member of Tripolis Lutheran Church in rural Kandiyohi. He was a member of the Willmar Eagles Aerie #2334.

David enjoyed being outdoors, whether hunting, fishing, ice fishing or gardening. His family remembers the many fishing trips they would take up north, and the Wyoming hunting trips he and his son would plan and take.

David is survived by his children, Greg (and Lisa) deCathelineau and Cheryl (and Ramon) deCathelineau Rivera both of Willmar; four grandchildren: Nicholas, Ashley, Kayla and Carlton and three great-grandchildren: Shathae, Kayley, Kaden. Also surviving are four brothers, Herve (and Mary) of Willmar, Louis (and Joann) of West Sun City, AZ, Donald (and Carol) of New London, Paul (and Elaine) of Willmar; three sisters, Beverly Williams of New London, Margaret (and Stanley) Thompson of Spicer, Blanche “Buzzy” (and Bob) Peterson of Spicer; and several nieces, nephews and other relatives.

In addition to his wife, Mary, David was preceded in death by his parents; great-grandson, Jamison; infant brother, Stanley and two sisters, Helen Carver and Carol Fritz.

Betty Halverson, 86, of New London, died on Saturday, June 12, 2010, at GlenOaks Care Center in New London. A memorial service will be held at 11:00 am Friday, June 18, 2010, at St. Stephen’s Episcopal Church in Paynesville. Inurnment will be at Oak Hill Cemetery in New London. Services are entrusted to Johnson Funeral Home in New London.

Betty Jean Ristow was born on May 14, 1924, the third daughter of Clara Evelyn Samuelson and Albert August Ristow in Willmar, Minnesota. Betty was baptized at the First Baptist Church of Willmar, and confirmed at Trinity Episcopal Church in Park Rapids. She graduated from Willmar High School in 1942 and married John Halvorson of New London on January 17, 1945, at St Luke’s Episcopal Church in Willmar

After WWII, John went to work for the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources (Forestry Division). During his years there, Betty and John lived in Hibbing, St Croix State Park, Park Rapids and Cambridge.

Betty has lived in New London with John since 1985. She was very active in the rehabilitation of Neer Park, was a member of the Midwest Carving Club, the New London Senior Citizens Club, Order of the Eastern Star and St. Steven’s Episcopal Church of Paynesville. She was an avid follower of and honorary member of the Little Crow Water Ski Club, and often attended State, Regional and National competitions not to mention local shows and as many practice sessions as long as she was able.

Betty and John were Senior Royalty in the 1993 Spicer July 4th Parade and also Grand Marshals of the New London Water Days Parade in 2003.

Betty loved children, snowmobile riding, skating, swimming, camping and travel.

Betty is survived her husband John of New London; children, Sandra of Willmar, and Glenn (and Nancy Kruse) of Minneapolis; grandchildren Anna, and Theodore (and Aura Haven) who live in Minneapolis. She is also survived by her brothers James, Algene and Gerald.

Betty was preceded in death by her sisters Phyllis, and Mae (Lucille), and by her brothers, Stanley, Curtis, Donald, and Calvin.

Claire Patrice Houchens, 59, of Willmar, died Sunday, June 13, 2010 at her home. Her Mass of Christian Burial will be 10:30 am, Wednesday, June 16th, 2010 at Church of St. Mary in Willmar. Burial will be in Lancaster, Pennsylvania. Visitation will be from 5-8 pm, Tuesday, June 15, 2010 at Harvey Anderson Funeral Home in Willmar and continue one hour prior to the service at the church on Wednesday. Memorials may be given to American Cancer Society.

Claire was born on June 1, 1951, in Brooklyn, New York, the daughter of Peter and Patricia (Gaskin) Cusack. She grew up in Farmingdale where she graduated from Farmingdale High School in 1969. After her schooling, Claire continued to live in Farmingdale and worked in banking until 1981.

While on a visit to her sister’s in Kansas, Claire met her husband to be, William Houchens and they were married on November 7, 1981 in Wichita, KS. Following their marriage, they lived in Los Angeles, CA, Northport, NY, Lancaster, Pa, moving to Willmar, MN in 1999. Claire graduated from the University of Hofstra in 1986 with a Paralegal Degree in 1986.

She was baptized in 1951 in Brooklyn, confirmed in 1967 at St. Killian’s Catholic Church in Farmingdale and since moving to Willmar has been a member of Church of St. Mary. She was active with the Sacramental Life and Worship Committee and also helped as a volunteer for funerals.

Surviving are her husband, Bill and children, Sarah and Michael of Willmar; siblings, Peter (and Linda) Cusack of Holbrook, NY; James (and Trudy) Cusack of Lancaster, PA; Deidre Lye of North Babylon, NY; Bridget (and Thomas) Rosanski and Megan (and Al) Bianco both of Lindenhurst, NY and many nieces and nephews.

Claire was preceded in death by her parents and siblings, Thomas Cusack and Colleen Berhalter.

Bill Roos, 83, Of Paynesville, died Thursday, June 10, 2010 at his home. His funeral will be 1:00 pm, Monday, June 14, 2010 at Nordland Lutheran Church, rural Paynesville. Burial will be in Eden Lake Cemetery in Eden Valley. Visitation will be from 4-6 pm at Johnson Funeral Home in Paynesville and continue one hour prior to the service at the church on Monday.

Bill was born on July 23, 1926, in Crow Lake Township, Stearns County, Minnesota, near Belgrade, the son of Neal and Jennie (Sikking) Roos. He grew up in the Belgrade and Georgeville area where he attended Shipstead School. He worked as a hired hand for area farmers before enlisting in the United States Army on February 6, 1950. While he was home on leave, Bill was united in marriage to Ellen Hedtke at St. John’s Lutheran Church in Atwater. Bill continued to serve his country during the Korean War and was honorably discharged on February 5, 1953. Following his discharge, Bill and Ellen lived and farmed near Grove City, Atwater and Eden Valley, retiring in 1984. Since 1987, they have lived on their farm near Paynesville.

He was a member of VFW Post #5460 in Watkins and Nordland Lutheran Church.

Surviving are his wife, Ellen; children, Dennis Roos of Lake Henry; Myron (and Sandy) Roos of Paynesville; Wendy (and Pat) Cochran of Swanville; Jeff (and Karen) Roos of Paynesville; Robin (and Rick) Anderson of Belgrade; 19 grandchildren and 13 great grandchildren. Also surviving are his siblings, Alice Roos of Minneapolis; Katherine Ruchti of Willmar; Louise Stewart of Minneapolis; Henry (and Florence) Roos of Belgrade; Elmer (and Glenna) Roos of Paynesville; Marion (and Gislee) Norby of Clearwater and Cornelius (and MaryAnn) Roos of Circle Pines.

He was preceded in death by his parents, son, Mark; daughter, Christine Christle; grandson, Mathew Roos; sisters, Annie and Jeannette Roos in infancy, and Emma Anderson.


Esther E. Morgan,. of Paynesville, died on Thursday, June 10, 2010, at Abbott Northwestern Hospital in Minneapolis. Esther Evelyn Morgan was born on April 9, 1929, in Slayton, the daughter of Elmer and Irene (Orre) Menk. She lived on a farm with her parents and a sister located north of Slayton until she was four. Her family then moved into Currie where she attended grade school. She went on to high school in Tracy. On November 18th, 1948 she was united in marriage to Lester Morgan at Zion Lutheran Church in Tracy. They lived on the Morgan family farm for 40 years, where they raised their 3 children. In 1989 they moved to Paynesville where she resided until her passing.

Before her marriage, Esther worked at the hardware store in Currie as a clerk and bookkeeper. After her marriage, she was a homemaker and mother to two sons and a daughter. She was also a second mother to three special little neighbor girls that she took care of in her home for twelve years.

Esther was a member of Paynesville Lutheran Church. She was baptized at Slayton and confirmed at Zion Lutheran Church in Tracey. Esther was also baptized in the Jordan River in Israel with her son, Dennis.

She was active in many ladies organizations including Twin Lake Ladies Club, Monroe Friendship Club, and PEO Sisterhood Chapter FB since its organization on May 15th, 1993. Esther enjoyed making homemade greeting cards, traveling, reading, crocheting and spending time with her friends. Her favorite times however were when she could be with her family.

Esther E. Morgan passed away on Thursday, June 10, 2010 at Abbott Northwesern Hospital in Minneapolis at the age of 81. She is survived by her sons, Bruce (Anne) of Eagan, Dennis (June) of Nashville, TN; daughter, Julie (Pat) of Eagan; grandchildren, Sherri Schuller, Mitch Morgan, Bruce Morgan II, John Morgan, and Brian Thompson; a great grandson, Zachary Schuller. Esther is also survived by her brother, David (Darlene) Menk of Benson; sisters, Lorraine Leonard of St. Cloud, Eleanor (Gene) Dold, of Currie; and additional dear loved ones include, Buddyboy, Ellie, and Buster. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Lester; and brother, Richard Menk.


Bernice V. DeJong age 89, of Clara City, died on Wednesday, June 09, 2010 at the Clara City Care Center in Clara City. Bernice Violet DeJong was born on March 24, 1921 in Clara City, Minnesota the daughter of August and Agnes (Theesen) Niemeyer. She grew up in Clara City where she graduated from Clara City High School in the class of 1938. She was united in marriage to Cornelius “Cornie” DeJong on November 4, 1942. The couple was blessed with two children. Bernice was an active member of Immanuel Lutheran Church in Clara City where she taught Sunday School, and was a member of Ladies Aid.

Bernice enjoyed spending time with her family and friends especially at their lake cottage. She also enjoyed nature, painting and photography.

Cornie died on September 23, 2002. Bernice continued to live in Clara City and later entered the Clara City Care Center.

She is survived by her daughter Karen Schelinder of Grand Forks, ND; son David (and Anne) DeJong of Jackson, MN; five grandchildren: Roxanne Schelinder, Jeffrey (and Kristy) Schelinder, Christopher (and Connie) Schelinder, Michael DeJong and Jill DeJong; five great-grandchildren: Douglas, Bruce, Joshua, Noah and Nila. She is also survived by her nieces, nephews and other relatives.

In addition to her husband “Cornie”, Bernice was preceded in death by her parents; brother: Harold and son-in-law Roger.

Ryan M. Glenz, 30, of Clear Lake, formerly of Paynesville, died on Tuesday, June 8, 2010, at the St. Cloud Hospital. Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11:00 am on Saturday, June 12, 2010, at St. Louis Catholic Church in Paynesville. Interment will be held at Grove Emmanuel Cemetery in rural Paynesville. A visitation will be held on Friday night from 5-8 pm at St. Louis Catholic Church in Paynesville and continue one hour prior to the service.

Ryan Michael Glenz was born on February 22, 1980 in Willmar, Minnesota, to Brad and Debbie Glenz. He grew up on the family farm in rural Paynesville. Ryan was baptized and confirmed at St. Louis Catholic Church in Paynesville, attended Paynesville Elementary School and graduated from Paynesville High School with the class of 1998. On June 9, 2007, Ryan was united in marriage to Ann Krusemark in Ottertail, Minnesota. He and Ann made their home in the house Ryan built in Clear Lake.

Ryan was loved helping people, always being the first to lend a hand on any project at a friend’s home. He was a very positive person, always finding the good in someone and making the best out of any situation. Ryan enjoyed hunting, fishing, cooking, and spending time with his family and friends.

Ryan Michael Glenz died on Tuesday, June 8, 2010 at the St. Cloud Hospital, at the age of 30. Ryan is survived by his wife, Ann (Krusemark); parents, Brad and Debbie Glenz; siblings, Jeremy (Julie), Nathan, Amanda; grandparents, Darlene Glenz, Marvin and Mary Kunstleben; brother-in-law, David (Andrea) Krusemark; three nieces and a nephew.

He was preceded in death by his grandfather, Roger Glenz.

Lucile L. Walsh, age 98 of Spicer, died Monday, June 7, 2010 at the Belgrade Nursing Home. Funeral services will be 10:30 Friday, June 11, 2010 at the Johnson Funeral Home in New London. Visitation will be 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. Thursday at the Johnson Funeral Home in New London and for one hour prior to the service. Burial will be in Roseville Cemetery in Hawick.

Lucile was born on May 26th, 1912 to Rollin and Bessie (Kauffman) Gable in LaGrange Indiana. Her mother died when Lucile was two years old and she and her father moved to Minnesota. She attended school in New London.

She married James J. Walsh on January 24th, 1938 and they made their home in St. Paul. She worked at a local market for ten years and then she worked at Harmony Healthcare for twenty years. After her retirement, Lucile moved to Spicer.

Lucile enjoyed painting, knitting, crocheting, fishing, bowling and watching her beloved Twins play baseball!

She is survived by her son and his wife Ryland and Judy (Smithson) Walsh of New London; grandchildren, Michelle (Stephen) Gralish of New London and Ryan (Joy) Walsh of Pensacola Florida; great-grandchildren, Ryland Gralish, Amanda Walsh, Ryan (Dana) Walsh Jr. and Nick Walsh, sisters, June Ryan and Joan Timm and sister-in-law, Cleone Gable.

Lucile was preceded in death by her husband James, two brothers, Bud and Ole and a sister, Mary Kissie.
Doris Goldenstein, 86, of Kerkhoven, died Wednesday, June 2, 2010 at Clara City Care Center. Her funeral will be 1:30 pm, Saturday, June 5, 2010 at Bethany Reformed Church in Clara City. Burial will take place in the church cemetery. Visitation will be Friday from 7-8 pm at Harvey Anderson Clara City Funeral Home in Clara City and continue one hour prior to the service at the church on Saturday.

Doris Anna Lorraine Holmgren on May 12, 1924, in Lafayette, Minnesota, the daughter of Carl and Anna (Gustafson) Holmgren. In 1926, her family moved to a farm near Raymond. After her schooling, Doris stayed home to help take care of her parents.

On February 12, 1947, she was united in marriage to Harvey Goldenstein at St. John’s Lutheran Church in Raymond. Following their marriage, they lived in Clara City and in 1949 they moved to their farm south of Kerkhoven where they have lived since. She was member of a homemaker’s group.

She was baptized in Raymond and was a member of Bethany Reformed Church in Clara City and was active with the ladies aid.

Surviving are her husband, Harvey of Kerkhoven; children, Donna Norrie of Eden Prairie; Brad (and Lori) Goldenstein of St. Bonifacius; Jeff Goldenstein of Kerkhoven; nine grandchildren, Libby Felling, Tim (and Shannon Fabick) Norrie, Mike (and Polly) Norrie, Tisha (and Dan) Gaspard, Sarah (and Aku Hussain) Goldenstein, Jenny (and Miles) White, Chad (and Amanda) Keuseman, Bennett Goldenstein and Kendra Goldenstein; 14 great grandchildren; her sister, Myrtle Johnson and sister-in-law, Opal Holmgren both of Willmar.

She was preceded in death by her parents, seven brothers and four sisters.

Larry E. Wallentine, 52 of rural Raymond, died on Friday at his home losing his 2 ½ year battle with colon cancer. A Celebration of Life service will be held at 4 pm Wednesday at Harvey Anderson Funeral Home Chapel. Friends may call one hour prior to the service at the funeral home.

Larry Edwin Wallentine was born on September 9, 1957, in Willmar, Minnesota, the son of Edwin and Arnette (Larson) Wallentine. He grew up in the Pennock area graduating from Willmar High School in 1975. While in high school, Larry was active in 4-H and FFA, he showed both cows and pigs at the Kandiyohi County Fair. He also helped the DeJong and Fosso families on their farms.

On February 11, 1984, Larry was united in marriage to Dawn Anderson at Vinje Lutheran Church. This union was blessed with two children of whom he was very proud of. They lived in rural Lake Lillian until 1996, when they moved to rural Raymond. Larry worked for the alfalfa plant in Priam for 13 years and then for Minnesota Feeder Pig Market that led to Midwest Direct Feeder Pigs for approximately 20 years.

He was an avid outdoorsman and enjoyed hunting and fishing, hunting deer on their hunting land near Swift Falls and on the Wallentine farm. He traveled to Colorado and New Mexico to hunt elk. He also enjoyed hunting pheasants, geese and ducks. He took several trips to the Northwest Territory of Canada, along with many other fishing trips to Canada and deep sea fishing in Mexico. One of his greatest pleasures was to tend to their hunting land.

Surviving is his wife, Dawn; children, Kyle Wallentine (and special friend Jessica Fischer) of Willmar and Sara Wallentine of Raymond, his mother, Arnette of Willmar, siblings, Lon Wallentine, Willmar, Lyle (and Kathryn) Wallentine of Squaw Lake, Lois Wallentine of Prior Lake and Loren Wallentine of Willmar.

He was preceded in death by his grandparents, Robert and Amy Larson and Harold and Edla Wallentine and father, Edwin in 2009.

Mary Jane Skoglund, 89, of Willmar, died on Saturday at Bethesda Heritage. Her service will be 1:00 pm Friday June 4th at Svea Evangelical Lutheran Church; interment will be in the church cemetery. Hilda Mary Jane (Johnson) was born on February 19, 1921, in Whitefield, Township, Kandiyohi County, Minnesota, the daughter of Andrew P. and Hilda Caroline (Swenson) Johnson. She grew up in the Svea area where she attended the elementary school and graduated from Willmar High School in 1938. She continued her education at Balzer Business College in Minneapolis, graduating in 1939.  Mary Jane served in the U S Navy from July 19, 1943 through August 14, 1946, obtaining the rank of Chief Petty Officer.

On June 15, 1948, Mary Jane was united in marriage to Howard G. Skoglund at Svea Lutheran Church. This union was blessed with three children. They farmed by Svea, Howard preceded her in death on April 7, 1977. She continued to live on the farm and later moved to Willmar.

Mary Jane had worked at the Federal Savings and Loan and the West Central Daily Tribune. She has been a resident at Bethesda Heritage since January 2008. Mary Jane was active with the Rice Hospital Auxiliary.

She was baptized, confirmed and was a lifetime member of Svea Evangelical Lutheran Church. Mary Jane had served as church organist, was active with WELCA, serving as president, she served with Global Missions, was a Synod Assembly delegate, taught Sunday School and participated in the Bible Studies and held numerous positions with other activities at the church. While living in Willmar, she faithfully attended Matins Services at Bethel Lutheran where she also played the piano.

Surviving are her children, Kent (Esther) Skoglund of Willmar, Susan (Mark) Doyle of Woodbury, and John (Kathy) Skoglund of Montevideo; grandchildren Jill (Andreas) Hansen, Michael Skoglund, Chelsea Doyle, Jack Doyle, Brady Skoglund and Taylor Skoglund.

In addition to her husband Howard, she was preceded in death by her siblings, Goldie Johnson, Alston Johnson, Mauritz Johnson, Lajla Lundahl, Ardis Jensen, Andreen Johnson and Roger Johnson

  Elvin “Buddy” J. Schriever, 89, of Paynesville died unexpectedly at his home on Saturday, May 22, 2010. A memorial service will be held at 11:00 am on Wednesday, May 26, 2010 at Johnson Funeral Home in Paynesville. A visitation will be held for one hour prior to the service. He is survived by his nephew, Greg; and nieces, Dawn, Lisa, and Angela.

Irene Fogel (Foster), 81,of Benson, died on Monday at her home. Her funeral service will be 11:00 am Friday at Our Redeemers Lutheran Church, Benson. Interment will be in Cloverleaf Cemetery, Willmar. Friends may call on Friday 1 hour prior to services at the church. Harvey Anderson Funeral Home in Willmar is handling arrangements.

Irene was born on October 18, 1928 in Benson, the daughter of Samuel and Anna (Dickson) Holmgren. She grew up with the August and Helen Rudeen family in Pennock. She attended rural school until entering Willmar High school, graduating in 1946. She married Norris Foster at the Salem church in Pennock in 1946. This union was blessed with five children. They lived on various turkey farms, settling in Benson in 1957. On December 4, 1981, Irene was united in marriage with John Fogel . John and Irene spent many years as residence of Brownsville, Texas. They enjoyed conducting tours for Grayline Bus Co. through southern Texas and Mexico. John preceded her in death on February 17,1991, Irene continued to live in Texas, returned to Minnesota in 2003, and resided at WestWood Manor apartments until her death. Irene died peacefully during her sleep at home on May 24, 2010 at the age of 81.

Irene was active in the Torning Township 4H clubs when her children were members. She later became a regional leader of the Girl Scouts of America when her younger children were scouts. She enjoyed traveling and spending time at the lake, fishing and sunning with the family. She loved playing games with family and friends and continued to enjoy bridge with the same women she had been playing with for over 30 years. She was an active participant of the American Cancer Society and participated in the Relay for Life and was a cancer survivor.

Surviving are her five children, Allen (Stephanie) Foster of Sauk Rapids; Lynn (Louis) Pahl of Milaca; Joan (John Ostroot) Foster of Grand Rapids; Lori Foster of Milwaukee; Kim (Jim) Hippen of Murdock; grandchildren, Ezra Crowley of San Francisco, CA; Becky Foster (Mark Heimermann) of St. Cloud; Nick (Michele) Pahl of Oakland Park, FL, Marah Pahl of Milaca; great-grandchild, Aethan Crowley of San Francisco, two sisters, Helen Person; Karen Stannard both of Minneapolis area, and many nieces, nephews, and friends.

Preceded in death by her parents, husband John; siblings, Donald Holmgren, Elroy Holmgren, Allison Holmgren, Richard Holmgren, Vernon Holmgren, Laverne Rudeen, Stanley Rudeen, and Harwin Rudeen, granddaughter Erin Crowley.

David F. Harder, M.D., age 70 of rural Park Rapids, MN formerly of Willmar, died on Tuesday, May 18, 2010 at his home. A memorial visitation will be held on Friday, May 28, 2010 from 4 until 7 PM with a memorial service at 6:30pm at Harvey Anderson Funeral Home in Willmar.

David (Doc) Franklin Harder was born on January 26, 1940 in Litchfield Minnesota, the son of William F. and Alice Helen (Rick) Harder. He grew up in Litchfield where he graduated from Litchfield High School , Class of 1958. He attended Iowa State Teachers College receiving his BS in 1965. He attended Medical School at the University of Minnesota and received his Doctorate in 1967, specializing in Urology and Surgery.

Dave was united in marriage to Pamela Jean Harms on September 3, 1966 in Minneapolis , Minnesota . The couple lived in Minneapolis; Sasebo, Japan; Great Lakes, Illinois; Virginia Beach , Virginia; Olean , New York and Willmar, Minnesota .

Dave worked as a Urologist at Affiliated Community Medical Centers in Willmar for 20 years, retiring in 2001. He then worked part-time at the Dakota Clinic in Park Rapids until he fully retired in 2009.
Dave served 26 years in the United States Navy, retiring as a full Captain.
He was a member of the American Medical Association, the American Urological Association and served as Class Treasurer for his high school reunions.

Dave enjoyed being outdoors, traveling, visiting family and friends, going to auctions and hunting. He was an avid horseman, which included trail riding, driving horse teams and participating in wagon trains. He would also fashion miniature harnesses for Breyer model horses.
Dave is survived by his wife Pamela Harder of Willmar ; daughter and son-in-law: Ragen Harder and Brian Stenholm of Olivia; son: Reid Harder of Stillwater; brothers: James (& Jill) Harder of Minneapolis and Thomas (& Wynn) Harder of Bird Island.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

Glenn Linn of Willmar, formerly of Blomkest, died Sunday, May 23 2010 at Rice Memorial Hospital in Willmar. His funeral will be 10:00 am, Thursday, May 27, 2010 at Svea Evangelical Lutheran Church in Svea. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Visitation will be Wednesday from 5-8 pm at Harvey Anderson Funeral Home in Willmar and continue one hour prior to the service at the church.

Glenn was born on Sept. 24, 1924, in Kingman Township to Caesar and Elvina (Erickson) Linn. He was baptized at Svea Lutheran Church and was confirmed in his faith at First Lutheran Church in Lake Lillian. He graduated from Bird Island High School in 1943. He was united in marriage to Dorma Geier on November 7th, 1945 at Peace Lutheran Church in Cosmos. They made their life together in the Lake Lillian, Svea, and Blomkest communities. Upon his retirement they moved to Willmar. At the time of his death he was a resident at Rice Care Center.

He was a long-time employee of the Kandiyohi County Highway Department working as a blade owner/operator. He was a member of Svea Lutheran Church where he served as an usher and on the Church Council. He was a man of many talents and interests and shared them freely with his family. He had a keen eye for antiques and would restore them with great care for his family. He took special pride in creating and maintaining beautiful yards. He was happiest when he would be working on the farm with his uncle or on a major remodeling project at home or for his girls.

He is survived by a loving family: his beloved wife, Dorma; three daughters: Pauline (Dan) Reigstad of Willmar; Gwen (Tom) Schoettler of New Smyrna Beach, Florida; and Amy (Jeff) Welter of Blomkest; five cherished grandchildren: Kate Schoettler of New Smyrna Beach, Florida, Megan (Dan) Johns of Willmar, Ben Vlaminck, Ryan Lawler, and Kaitlyn Lawler of Blomkest, three step grandchildren: Andrew, Ashley, and Amber Welter of Willmar; two sisters: Darlene Schmoll of Camarillo, CA; and Joanne (Charles) Peterson of Pinehurst, TX; an aunt, Eileen Johnson of Fairfax; three sisters-in-law: Audrey Koglin of Hutchinson, Virgie Schmoll of Bird Island, and Myra Swanson of Ft. Pierce, Florida; a brother-in-law, Thurman Sagness of Lake Lillian; many nieces, nephews, and cousins.

He was preceded in death by an infant brother; a sister, Maxine Sagness; and his first-born grandson, Adam Schoettler.

Kenneth W. Olson, 94, of Willmar, died Monday, May 24, 2010 at Rice Care Center in Willmar. His funeral will be 11:00 am, Friday, May 28, 2010 at the United Methodist Church in Willmar. Burial will be in Oak Park Methodist Cemetery, rural Kandiyohi. Visitation will be from 5-7 pm, Thursday at Harvey Anderson Funeral Home in Willmar and continue one hour prior to the service at the church on Friday. A complete obituary will appear later.

Kenneth was born on February 20, 1916, in Kandiyohi Township, Kandiyohi County, Minnesota the son of John and Hulda (Jensen) Olson. He attended schools in Kandiyohi and graduated from Mechanic Arts High School in St. Paul.

On January 8, 1939, he was united in marriage to Jana Karr on her aunt’s farm in Fahlun Township in Kandiyohi County. Following their marriage they lived and farmed a variety of crops, raised livestock and milked cows in Fahlun Township until 1949 when they moved to Lake Elizabeth Township. They also owned and operated Lake Lillian Lanes from 1963 – 1977 and Jana’s Antiques from 1963 – 1990. They moved into Willmar in 1990. Ken also worked for several local businesses while he was farming including, Hanson Silo, Lake Lillian Creamery and local ASCS office.

He was a member of a local Masonic Lodge for over 50 years. Throughout Ken’s life, he participated in bowling leagues, played softball, and for the past several years he loved golfing. Whatever the sport, Ken always looked forward to some good competition. He sang for many years in the Kandiyohi Barbershop Chorus.

Ken was a member of Oak Park Methodist Church before moving into Willmar when he joined United Methodist Church of Willmar.

He is survived by three sons, Michael (and Anne) Olson of Willmar; Jon Olson of Atwater; Kevin (and Brigitte) of Seabeck, WA; four grandchildren and seven great grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents, siblings and wife, Jana.


Randall C. Nissen, age 60 of rural New London, died Saturday morning, May 22, 2010 at Park Nicollet Methodist Hospital in St. Louis Park.  Funeral services will be 11:00 a.m. Wednesday, May 26, 20010 at Peace Lutheran Church with Rev. David Dauk officiating. Burial will be in Oak Hill Cemetery in New London. Visitation will be 5:00 to 8:00 p.m. Tuesday at the Johnson Funeral Home in New London and for one hour prior to the services at the church.

In Lieu of flowers, memorials are preferred.

Randall Charles Nissen was born on Oct. 2, 1949 in Starbuck, the son of Alvin and Dorothy (Jacobs) Nissen. He grew up on the family farm near Clontarf and attended Benson High School, graduating in 1967. On July 27, 1968, Randy was united in marriage to his high school sweetheart and soul mate, Mary Lou Krattenmaker. To this union two daughters and a son were born. They made their home in rural New London, where he worked as a welder and farmed. Together, Randy and Mary Lou were able to share in 41 years of marriage, rarely spending a day apart. Randy was an active member of Living Word Lutheran Church. He enjoyed gardening, restoring machinery and spending time with his family, especially his grandsons.

Randy died on Saturday morning, May 22, 2010 at Park Nicollet Methodist Hospital in St. Louis Park with his family by his side at the age of 60. He is survived by wife, Mary Lou Nissen; children, Toni (Aaron) Ardoff of Breezy Point, Tina (Nick) Schrantz of New London and Terry Nissen of Spicer; 4 grandchildren, Nicholas, Tyler, Kaden, and Mitchell; parents, Alvin and Dorothy Nissen of Benson; siblings, Al and (Arlene) Nissen of Clontarf, Craig Nissen of Willmar, and Wendy (Duane) Kriese of Spicer.

Randy was preceded in death by his grandparents.

Davien Holtberg, age 67 of Belgrade, died Saturday, May 22, 2010 at his home in rural Belgrade. Funeral services will be 10:30 Thursday, May 27, 2010 at Grace Lutheran Church in Belgrade. Burial will be in Grace West Cemetery. Visitation will be 5:00 to 8:00 p.m. Wednesday at the Johnson Funeral Home in Belgrade and for one hour prior to the services at the church.

Davien Rudolph Holtberg was born at Belgrade Hospital on December 23, 1942 to Norman “Tuffy” Holtberg and Justine Westergard Holtberg. Dave was baptized at Crow Lake Lutheran Church and confirmed at Zion Lutheran Church in Belgrade. Dave graduated from Belgrade High School in 1960 and moved to Arizona briefly. From 1964-1967 he served in the U.S. Marine Corps as an aviation photographer and mechanic.

He married Janice Lee Richardson on May 15, 1965 and lived in Belgrade, Haveloc, NC, Minneapolis, Duluth, Grand Forks, ND and settled back in Belgrade in 1977. They celebrated their 45th wedding anniversary on May 15, 2010.

Dave worked as an insurance adjuster for Motors Insurance Corporation, a division of General Motors, for 30 years. He drove 1 million 500 accident-free miles, had 44 company cars and never got a ticket or a flat tire. He also owned and operated Holtberg Body Shop from his home.

After his retirement in 1997, he served as a supervisor on the board of Crow Lake Township for many years, helped maintain the Crow Lake Church property, served briefly on the Grace Lutheran Church Cemetery Board, and always had multiple projects on his “to-do” list.

Dave loved the outdoors, especially fishing and duck, pheasant and deer hunting. He loved nostalgic things -- cars from the 50s and 60s, steam tractors and vintage farm equipment, and old time polka and big band music. He was incredibly resourceful and would say “We’ve done so much with so little for so long we qualify to do almost anything with nothing.” He always taught ‘his boys’ to “check the simple stuff first.” He’d let you borrow anything he had, as long as you brought it back in the same condition it was in when you borrowed it. He was always willing to lend a helping hand and will be remembered for his thoughtfulness and neighborliness.

Dave fought cancer twice with the endurance and tenacity of the Marine he was so proud of being. He may have lost the battle within his body, but he never relented his spirit. Semper Fi!

Dave is survived by his wife, Janice of Belgrade, daughter, Kirsten (Tom) and grandsons Austin and Connor Freeman of Sartell, son Lee (Chrissy) and grandson Zachary Holtberg of Blooming Prairie, siblings, Kathy (Al) Pritchard, Wayne Holtberg, Rick (Lynette) Holtberg, Carol (Frank) Kinzel, eight nephews, Steve, Scott, Kris and Kevin Buchholz, Ryan Holtberg, Jacob, Paul and Perry Kinzel, one niece, Marissa Holtberg Pooler, and many dear cousins, relatives, friends and neighbors.

He was preceded in death by his parents and niece Leslie Holtberg.

 

Marcus “Mark” Noordmans, 89, of Priam, died Wednesday, May 19, 2010, at Bethesda Heritage Center in Willmar. His funeral service will be 10:30 am Saturday at Raymond Christian Reformed Church with burial in Fairview Cemetery in Raymond. Visitation will be 5-7:00 pm, Friday at Raymond Christian Reformed Church and continue on Saturday one hour prior to the service.

Mark was born March 26, 1921, near Hancock, MN, the son of Dewey and Jesse (Hoekstra) Noordmans. He grew up on the family farm where he helped his parents farm before serving in the US Navy from 1941-1946 during WWII. After his discharge in 1946, he returned to Hancock and was united in marriage to Wilhelmina VanEps. Following their marriage, the couple farmed near Cyrus and Mark worked as a custodian at the U of Minnesota - Morris, until 1969, when they moved to Priam. Mark worked as a custodian at Willmar High School and later at Willmar Vo-Tech, prior to his retirement in the mid 1980’s. Following his retirement, Mark worked part-time as a custodian for his church, Raymond Christian Reformed Church.

On April 18, 1987, Mark was united in marriage to Ella Mae Carlson-Wiegmann at the Raymond Christian Reformed Church. They continued to live in Priam.

Surviving is his wife, Ella Mae of Priam; children, Duane (and Alvina) Noordmans of Kandiyohi, Teri (and Marv) Asche of Raymond, Marcy (and Bruce) Swanson of Willmar; daughter-in-law, Becky (and Ken) Price of New London, WI; 10 grandchildren and 12 great grandchildren; step-children, Karen (and Jon) Swanson of Pennock, Sandra (and Wayne) Anderson of Apple Valley, Wendy (and John) Venzke of Moose Lake, Dale (and Mary) Wiegmann of Willmar, Debra (and Dale) Heide of Faribault, James (and Linda) Wiegmann of Raymond, Pamela (and Mark) Peterson of Kandiyohi, Daniel (and Sue) Wiegmann of Sunburg, Maxine (and Lyle) Stueven of Cokato, and Janice Gilsrud of St. Cloud; 25 step-grandchildren and 13 step-great grandchildren. Joseph G. Demgen, 58, of Burlington, VT, died Wednesday, May 19, 2010 at his home where he had resided since 2007, following a seven year struggle with MDS.  His visitation will be Friday , June 4th, 2010 at Harvey Anderson Funeral Home in Willmar from 5-7 pm, with a Prayer Service at 7:00 pm.  Burial will take place on Saturday, June 5th, 2010 at St. Mary's Catholic Cemetery in Willmar at 11:30 am.  Arrangements are with Harvey Anderson Funeral Home in Willmar.

Joe was born on July 15, 1951 in Des Moines, Iowa; the eldest of three sons born to Ralph and Sally (Sheldahl) Demgen. The family moved to Willmar in 1957. Joe graduated from St. Mary’s School, Willmar High School, Willmar Community College and St. John’s University in Collegeville where he majored in History Education.

Following college, Joe had a 35 year career in the hospitality industry in Bloomington, Las Vegas, Willmar, Minneapolis, Chicago and Burlington that ended with a serious injury in 2008. Joe’s trademark was his courtesy and he was well known for his engaging style and detailed knowledge in all the locales he worked.

He was an expert on U.S. military history/weaponry, swing music, early rock-and-roll and French wines. From an early age, he instilled an interest in history in the neighborhood and among his family, friends and patrons.

He is survived by his mother Sally of Willmar, his two brothers Martin (Mary) of Minneapolis and James (Beth) of Buffalo, MN., seven nieces and nephews – John, Julia, Alec, Sally, Margaret and Ellen of Minneapolis and Anna of Buffalo, his aunts Ardelle Gifford of Longmont, CO., Emily Demgen of Superior, WI., and uncle Nilus Ihle of Mesa, AZ., 29 first cousins and his former sister-in-law Cheryl.

He was preceded in death by his father, his nephew Martin, his cousins Lee and Paul and many aunts and uncles.

Donna M. Thorson 75, of New London died on Wednesday, May 19, 2010, at GlenOaks Care Center in New London. A memorial service will be 11:00 am Monday, May 24, 2010 at the Johnson Funeral Home in New London. Visitation will be one hour prior to the service.

Donna Mae Thorson was born on May 17, 1935 in Murdock, the daughter of Floyd and Bertha (Benson) Zurn. She grew up in the Murdock area where she attended grade school and high school. On June 24, 1953, Donna was united in marriage to Duane Leaf. To this union a daughter and son were born. The made their home in the Willmar area.

On September 6, 1980, Donna was united in marriage to Lowell Thorson. They made their home in Minneapolis until 1989 when they moved to New London and she worked at a group home in Spicer. She retired in 1995. She enjoyed fishing, flowers and singing. She was a Jack of all trades who loved to work and stay busy, never scared of a good challenge.

Donna died on Wednesday, May 19, 2010 at the GlenOaks Care Center in New London at the age of 75. She is survived by her husband, Lowell Thorson of New London; her children, Wendy (Bob) Vivion of Bird Island and Tom Leaf of New London; five grandchildren; 2 great-grandchildren; siblings, Dick (Pat) Zurn of CA, Dan (Janet) Zurn of CA and Darlene Welch of Willmar.

Donna was preceded in death by her parents and brother, Duane Zurn.

  John P. Schmidt, 95 of Willmar and formerly of Morgan, died on Sunday May 16, 2010, at Bethesda Pleasantview. Private services were held and arrangements were with Harvey Anderson Funeral Home in Willmar.

John Peter Schmidt was born on September 17, 1914, in Independence, Iowa, the son on Theodore J. and Anna (Huschke) Schmidt. In 1920, their family moved to the Morgan, Minnesota area where John attended District #90 for his schooling.

On April 29, 1941, John was united in marriage to Rose Ann Sellner. This union was blessed with seven children. They farmed in the Morgan area. Rose preceded him in death on December 25, 1989.

He was baptized at Jessop, Iowa and was confirmed at Morgan, Minnesota. He was a member of St. Michael's Catholic Church and was a Grand Knight with the Knights of Columbus and was a District Deputy. John was active with Catholic Aid and served on the New Ulm Diocesan Board.

He served as a 4-H leader for a number of years and also served as Treasurer for Morgan Township.

Surviving are his children, Jerome (Jan) Schmidt of Winthrop, Harry (and Jackie) Schmidt of Morgan, Chuck (and Mary Lou) Schmidt of Lafayette, Otto (and Karen) Schmidt of St. Louis Park, Lois Flaig of Willmar, Tony Schmidt of Westminster, CO, Tom (and Char) Schmidt of St. Paul; 14 grandchildren and 15 great grandchildren. Also surviving are his siblings, Raymond (and Mary) Schmidt of Morgan, Ellen Irlbeck of Wabasso and Mildred Tauer of Morgan; sisters-in law, Ruth Schmidt of Morgan , Mary Eichberger of Sleepy Eye, Esther (and Evan) Vasey of Sebeka, Cecilia (and Tom) Schwartz of New Ulm, Theresa Reiniger of Sleepy Eye, Veronica (and Francis) Dauer of New Ulm, Bernadette Fischer of Springfield and Leona Seller of Sleepy Eye; brother-in-law, Wallace Mecklenburg of New Ulm and many nieces and nephews.

In addition to his wife, Rose, he was preceded in death by his brother, Lawrence Schmidt, grandson, Steven Flaig, great grandson, Alex Schmidt and son-in-law, Richard Flaig.

Joann Handahl, 82, of Spicer, died Tuesday, May 18, 2010 at Rice Memorial Hospital in Willmar. Her Celebration of Life Funeral will be 11:00 am, Friday, May 21, 2010 at Vinje Lutheran Church in Willmar. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Visitation will be Thursday from 5-7 pm at Harvey Anderson Funeral Home in Willmar and continue one hour prior to the service at the church on Friday.

Joann was born on June 27, 1927, in Willmar, Minnesota, the daughter of William and Emma (Erickson) Estrem. She grew up in Murdock, graduating from Murdock High School in 1945, continuing her education at St. Olaf College, receiving her BA Degree in Home Economics in 1949. She taught one year at Bird Island High School and also taught in the Business Department at the Willmar Area Vocational Technical Institute, teaching a charm course.

On June 24, 1950, she was united in marriage to Donald Handahl at Calvary Lutheran Church in Murdock. They lived in Willmar following their marriage. Joann and Don were blessed with two sons and were wishing they could have a girl too. In 1955, Joann crashed Don’s office and said, not only are we having another, but twins. And God blessed them with two daughters. They were planning their 60th wedding anniversary this year.

Joann loved to cook and entertain guests and after moving to Rice Estates, she was elected social director for events at the community clubhouse. She could organize a conversation group at the drop of a hat and served many years as the coordinator for meal following funerals at Vinje Lutheran Church. She was able to put her organizing and entertaining hat on as she served as President of the Minnesota Turkey Growers Association Gal Gobblers and saw to it that everyone wore turkey sweatshirts and were promoting turkey products.

She enjoyed playing Bridge, her sewing club and church circles in Minnesota and Arizona. While living on Green Lake, Joann enjoyed watching all the boats and always made sure the birdfeeders were full.

She is survived by her husband, Don of Spicer; son, Ross (and Marcia) Handahl of St. Cloud; daughters, Heidi (and Charles) Anderson of Nashville, TN; Holly (and Scott) Ricker of Batavia, IL; daughter-in-law, Sheila Handahl of Onalaska, WI; 10 grandchildren, Nicholas and Christian Handahl, Sarah (and Lucas) Ahlberg, Stephanie (and Jarod) Summers, Stacie Handahl, Carl, Eric and Nels Anderson, Ryan and Anna Ricker; and twin great grandsons, Lincoln and Evan Ahlberg.

She was preceded in death by her parents; son, Mark in 2008; brothers, Donald and Robert Estrem.

Merle J. Nacey, 72 of Paynesville died on Sunday, May 16, 2010, at Paynesville Area Hospital. Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:30 am on Thursday, May 20, 2010, at St. Louis Catholic Church in Paynesville. Interment will be at St. Joseph Catholic Cemetery in Waite Park. A visitation will be held on Wednesday from 4-8:00 pm at St. Louis Catholic Church in Paynesville with Parish Prayers being held at 7:30 pm. The visitation will continue one hour prior to the service. In lieu of flowers memorials are preferred.

Merle James Nacey was born on February 19, 1938, in Wadena, the son of James and Mary (Barlage) Nacey. When he was 7 his family moved to Waite Park where he attended grade school. Merle went onto graduate from St. Cloud Tech High School. On April 10, 1956, he was united in marriage to Grace Nelson in Waite Park. To this union three sons and a daughter were born. After their marriage, Merle and Grace lived in Waite Park for a short time before they moved to Bloomington, where Merle worked as a mechanic for Hopkins Transfer. They moved to Tracy, where Merle worked for Borner Ford, then to Eden Valley, where he worked for Bischof Ford. In 1965, the family moved to Paynesville where Merle worked for Paynesville Motor Transfer, before opening the family business, J & M Auto Services and Towing, in 1967. Merle never officially retired, he drove wrecker for the business as a hobby whenever he had time. Merle J. Nacey died on Sunday, May 16, 2010 at Paynesville Area Hospital, he and Grace shared in 54 years of marriage.

Merle was a member of St. Louis Catholic Church in Paynesville. He was also very active in many different AA groups in the area and organized Tuesday night motorcycle rides. Merle loved riding his motorcycle, working on puzzles, and having the family over for holidays.

Merle J. Nacey is survived by his wife, Grace; children, Dennis of Paynesville, Larry of Owatonna, Roger of Waite Park, Julann (and Dan) Krupke of Sauk Rapids; 8 grandchildren and 2 great grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents and an infant grandson.

Foster Hudson, 94 of Hawick died on Saturday, May 15, 2010, at Rice Memorial Hospital in Willmar. A funeral service will be held at 11:00 am on Wednesday, May 19, 2010, at Hawick Methodist Church in Hawick. Burial will be at Roseville Cemetery in Hawick. A visitation will be held from 5-8:00 pm on Tuesday at Johnson Funeral Home in New London and continue one hour prior to the service at the church

Foster Hudson was born in New London Township, to Burr and Jean (Smithson) Hudson on October 23, 1915. When he was about seven they moved to their new farm on Long Lake, near Hawick. Although he was an only child, Burr and Jean also raised Lola (Smithson) Barron, Jean’s niece, who lost her mother in child birth.

Foster graduated from high school in Paynesville. He then graduated from Dunwoody Institute in Minneapolis.

He took his first job with Glen L. Martin Aircraft in Baltimore. Ollie (Solbrack) joined him and they were married in 1941. When WWII broke out, they returned to the farm at Hawick, where they built a home next to Burr and Jean and have resided since. They raised two sons, Foster A. (Karen) and Lyle (Cheryl).

After WWII, Foster taught one year at Dunwoody. He farmed with his father for many years but also worked several jobs building homes in the area. When the REA built a power plant across the road he got a job as a plant operator for several years. He then started his own cabinet business and built his shop on the farm. He also drove school bus in New London for 25 years. Although he retired from most of his jobs, he never quit working.

He was a life-long member of Hawick United Methodist Church and served many jobs associated with the church. He was sextant of the Roseville Cemetery for about 50 years. He served several terms on the Roseville Township Board and was also elected chairman of the Township Officer’s Association.  He enjoyed a long, rich life on the Roseville Prairie.

He was preceded in death by his parents and cousin, Lola. He is survived by wife, Ollie, his two sons and their wives, five grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.

Justin Simonson, 81, of Willmar, died Sunday, May 16, 2010 at Bethesda Pleasantview in Willmar. His funeral will be 11:00 am, Friday, May 21, 2010 at First Lutheran Church of Norway Lake, rural New London. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Visitation will be from 5-7 pm, Thursday, May 20, 2010 at Harvey Anderson Funeral Home in Willmar and continue one hour prior to the service at the church on Friday.

Justin was born on August 17, 1928, in Arctander Township, Kandiyohi County, Minnesota the son of Joseph and Ella (Engen) Simonson. He attended District 69 School and graduated from Willmar High School in 1947. He continued to live on the farm following his schooling. On October 17, 1952, he was united in marriage to Shirley Hagen at Monson Lake Lutheran Church. Following their marriage, they continued to farm for the next 57 years before moving into Willmar in 2004. He had been active with 4-H and NFO while they were farming.

He was baptized on September 16, 1928 and confirmed on June 28, 1942 at First Lutheran Church of Norway Lake where he was a lifetime member. Justin had served on the church council, ushered, rang the bell, sang in the choir and was the custodian. Justin also was on the cemetery board and was the sexton for many, many years.

His family remembers him as an extremely hard worker, laboring long hours on the farm milking, baling hay, planting and harvesting the crops and yet he always had time to help others too. He enjoyed bowling and going out to eat, especially to Hillcrest for potato soup. His morals and values were the greatest gift that he could give to his children, grandchildren and great grandchildren. His passion, commitment and dedication to his wife, Shirley, will be cherished forever.

God mercifully took Justin home on Sunday, May 16, 2010 at Bethesda Pleasantview. Surviving are his wife, Shirley of Willmar; daughters, Lynnette (and Rick) Schirmers of Willmar; Geraldine “Geri” (and Mike) Johnson of San Tan Valley, AZ; Audrey (and Pete) Paulson of Belgrade, Diane (and Joe) Murray of Anoka; 10 grandchildren, Darin (and Magen) Schirmers, Stephanie (and Ben) Iverson, Todd (and Stacie) Johnson, Troy Johnson, Travis (and Emily) Roediger, Trever (and Sheena) Roediger, Heidi (and Tom) Irvin, Kayla (and Corey) Barber, Melissa and Brianna Murray and seven great-grandchildren, Jaxin Schirmers, Carleigh, Carter and KiAnna Johnson, Ayla Roediger, Emery and Delany Barber,

He was preceded in death by his parents, a stillborn daughter, and sister, Harriet Arnesen.


Calvin (Cal) Fokken, 78, of Willmar, died Sunday, May 16, 2010 at his home. His funeral will be 1:30 pm, Thursday, May 20, 2010 at First Reformed Church in Willmar. Burial will be in Bethany Reformed Cemetery in Clara City. Visitation will be Wednesday from 5-7 pm at Harvey Anderson Funeral Home in Willmar and continue one hour prior to the service on Thursday.

Cal was born on June 30, 1931, in Rheiderland Township, Chippewa County, Minnesota the son of William and Elizabeth (Tebben) Fokken. He grew up on the farm, attending District 69 and Clara City Public School. Following his schooling, he farmed near Clara City. On March 23, 1963, he was united in marriage to Mary Ann Olson at Our Saviors Lutheran Church in Montevideo. He continued farming until moving to Willmar in 1966. He worked 19 years for Gamble Robinson and 14 years for Cashwise Foods before retiring in 2008.

He was baptized and made his affirmation of faith at Bethany Reformed Church in Clara City. They joined First Reformed Church after moving to Willmar and he served as an usher, deacon, janitor and had sung in the choir.

His family recalls his infectious laugh; his love of fishing, hunting and working. Mary Ann and Cal enjoyed traveling, taking many bus trips with their dear friends, Hank and Bev Ledeboer. He was a proud member of the Friesen Historical Society, near Bunde.

Survivors include his wife, Mary Ann of Willmar; son, Brent of Minneapolis; brothers, Henry Fokken of Clara City, Carl (and Marlyn) Fokken of Montevideo and Leonard (and Lorraine) Fokken of Clara City and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

 

Mildred Marian Commerford, age 90 of Pennock, formerly of Murdock, died on Tuesday, May 11, 2010 at Rice Memorial Hospital in Willmar. Mass of Christian Burial will be at 11:00 a.m., Monday at the Church of St. Mary in Willmar. Burial will be in the Sacred Heart Catholic Cemetery in Murdock. Visitation will be one hour prior to the service at the church. Arrangements are with Harvey Anderson Funeral Home in Willmar.

Mildred Marian Commerford was born on May 27, 1919, in Napoleon, ND, the daughter of John August and Julia Sara (Larson) Schutt. She grew up in the Kerkhoven area where she attended and graduated from Kerkhoven High School. She worked as a nanny in the Twin Cities. She was united in marriage to Donald Commerford on February 22, 1941. The couple farmed in the DeGraff area, and owned and operated the grocery store in Danvers and later owned and operated a café and tavern in Murdock. They moved to a small farmsite near Murdock where Mildred worked for the Murdock school as a lunchroom assistant. Donald passed away in 1993. Mildred then lived with her daughter, where she helped with her daycare.

Mildred was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Murdock and was currently a member of the Church of St. Mary in Willmar. She enjoyed praying for others and had a special devotion to
the Rosary. She enjoyed taking care of plants, sewing and was an avid Twins Baseball and a Minnesota Viking fan. She really enjoyed helping at the daycare, and was known as "Grandma Millie" to many children throughout the years. Everyone appreciated her great home cooked meals and baked goods.

Mildred is survived by her children: Sandra Shores of Temple, TX, Connie (Darrel) Larsen of Savage, Marcia (John) Swenson of Lindstrom, David (Joyce) Commerford of Rosemount,Bobbi (Gary) Refsland of Pennock, Steve (Alice) Commerford of Alexandria; 14 grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; her brother, Russell (Shirley) Schutt of Kerkhoven; and several nieces; nephews and other relatives.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, a daughter in infancy; a grandson Ryan Refsland in infancy; brothers: Willie Schutt and Fritz Schutt, Lloyd (and Joyce) Schutt; sisters: Muriel Schutt, Ruth (and Ed) Clark and Blanche (and Ray) Heimke and three siblings who died as babies while the family was living in Napoleon, niece Dorothy Clark (and Bob) Pedersen, and her son-in-law Jerry Shores.
Maryanne C. Thompson, 75, of Willmar, died Monday, May 10, 2010 at Rice Care Center in Willmar. Her funeral will be 4:00 pm, Friday at First Covenant Church in Willmar. Burial will be in Rolling Forks Cemetery, rural Swift Falls. Visitation will be from 5-7 pm, Thursday at First Covenant Church and continue one hour prior to the service at the church on Friday. Arrangements are with Harvey Anderson Funeral Home in Willmar. Memorials preferred in lieu of flowers to donor’s choice or Salvation Army.

Maryanne was born on July 24, 1934, in St. Paul, Minnesota the daughter of Sylvester and Ida (Krzewinski) Gockowski. She grew up in St. Paul where she graduated from high school in 1952. On June 19, 1954, she was united in marriage to Thomas O. Thompson at St. Adelbert’s Catholic Church in St. Paul. Following their marriage, they lived in Richfield, Long Lake, Delano, Osseo, rural Benson and recently had moved to Willmar. During her working years, Maryanne had several jobs but retired as a cook from the Lindberg Rest Home in Kerkhoven in 1998. She was a member of First Covenant Church where she volunteered in circle while living near Benson she taught Sunday school at Shepherd of the Hills Lutheran Church.

She was an avid reader, enjoyed playing cards, throwing horseshoes, bowling, gardening and square dancing. For the past several months, Maryanne volunteered as a Foster Grandparent, four hours per day - every day, at Kennedy Elementary School in Willmar and absolutely loved it. Most of all, Maryanne enjoyed being the ringleader for all the family events, making sure everything was done and everyone was attending.

Surviving are her husband, Thomas of Willmar; children, Jeffery (and Kim) Thompson of Alexandria; Anne (and Eddie) Blaikie of Whittier, CA; Diane (and special friend, Bill) Buterbaugh of Riverside, CA; Debra (and Mike) Maras of Benson; Jay (and Laura) Thompson of Paynesville; Todd (and Jennifer) Thompson of Prior Lake; 12 grandchildren, James (and Traci), Joshua (and special friend, Holly), LeAnn (and special friend, Charlie), Brandon (and Elizabeth), Nicholas, Nathan, Lindsay (and Alex), Jeremy (and Karla), Lacey (and Jason), Robin (and Mike), Peder (and fiancée, Hannah) and Ezra; 8 great grandchildren, McKenna, Joseph, Charles, Jersey, Ariel, Jeremy, Dylan and Wyatt. Also surviving are her siblings, Les (and Ev) Gockowski of Coon Rapids; Dorothy Gay of Hickory, NC; Marge (and Don) Stary of Lady Lake, FL; and Joanne Schoonover of St. Paul.

She was preceded in death by her parents, brother, John and sister, Lorraine.

Kone Albertus Zimmer, age 90 of Pennock died on Saturday, May 8, 2010 at Rice Care Center in Willmar. Funeral service will be 10:30am on Saturday at the Willmar Assembly of God. Burial will be at St. John’s Lutheran Cemetery in Pennock with Military Honors provided by the Willmar American Legion Post #167. Visitation will be from 5-8pm on Friday at Harvey Anderson Funeral Home in Willmar and will continue one hour prior to the service at the church on Saturday.

Kone was born on May 13, 1919 in Edwards Township, Kandiyohi County, Minnesota, the son of Simon Sr. and Swata (Brouwer) Zimmer. He grew up in the Raymond area where he attended country school. He worked on the family farm in rural Raymond and entered the United States Army in January of 1942. He served during WWII stationed in the European-African- Middle Eastern Theater. He received an Honorable Discharge in September of 1945. He returned to the Raymond area and was united in marriage to Margaret Beckmann in Clara City on January 7, 1946. In 1948, they purchased a farm in rural Pennock where they farmed and made their home, they were blessed with four children. In 1970, Kone stopped farming crops and worked various jobs including: Quam Construction, Jennie-O and worked with other farmers.

Kone was a member of St. John’s Lutheran Church in Raymond and joined the Willmar Assembly of God in 1970. He served on the country school board in Pennock. He was a member of the Willmar American Legion Post #167 and was the last surviving veteran of a group that left Kandiyohi County for WWII on January 7, 1942.

Kone enjoyed gardening, making things in his shop, and would play his accordion for residents in the area nursing homes.

He is survived by his wife, Margaret of Pennock; children: Dennis (DeAnna) Zimmer of Marshall, Wayne (Debra) Zimmer of Willmar, Diann (Ron) Poepping of Hutchinson, Darrel (Pam) Zimmer of Duluth; 12 grandchildren; 4 step-grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; and brother Simon Zimmer Jr. of Willmar.

He was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers: George and Egbert Zimmer and sister Elizabeth Koch.

Alma K. Thostenson, age 95 of Belgrade, died Monday, May 03, 2010 at the Belgrade Nursing Home. Funeral services will be 2:00 p.m. Friday, May 7, 2010 at Grace Lutheran Church in Belgrade, where visitation will be held one hour prior to the service at the church. Burial will be in the Grace West Cemetery in Belgrade. Arrangements are with the Johnson Funeral Home in Belgrade.

Alma Katherine Thostenson was born on August 6, 1914, the daughter of Alfred and Kate (Krouse) Wegner, on the family farm near Walnut Grove. She was the second oldest of eight children. She attended country grade school and often recalled her trips across the field in horse and buggy to attend.

After her schooling she was united in marriage to Francis Donner. To this union five children were born. Francis was killed in a car accident in 1959. She later married Herman Thostenson. They made their home in Palm Springs, CA for short time before moving to St. Paul, where they worked as custodians for St. John’s Episcopal Church. Some of her happiest days were spent at St. John’s with Herman. They returned to Belgrade and enjoyed retirement together. Alma became a resident of the Belgrade Nursing Home in 1998.

Alma died on Monday, May 3, 2010 at the Belgrade Nursing Home at the age of 95. She is survived by her children, Shirley (Robert) Wensman of Sauk Centre, Jean Vegdahl of New London, Fran (Kermit) Hollen of Fridley and Darvin (Sally) Donner of State College, PA; ten grandchildren; six step-grandchildren; nineteen great-grandchildren and three great-great-grandchildren.

Alma was preceded in death by her husbands, Francis and Herman; parents and seven brothers and sisters.

Gerald John Fischer, 90, of Spicer, died Monday, May 03, 2010 at Rice Memorial Hospital in Willmar. His funeral will be 10:30 am, Saturday, May 8, 2010 at Hope Presbyterian Church in Spicer. Burial will be in Spicer City Cemetery with Military Honors by American Legion Post #545 of Spicer. Visitation will be from 5-8 pm, Friday at Harvey Anderson Funeral Home in Willmar and continue one hour prior to the service at the church on Saturday. Memorials preferred.

Gerald was born on February 11, 1920, in Danube, Minnesota, the son of Walter and Alvina (Grabow) Fischer. He grew up in Danube, graduating from high school in 1938.

On March 15, 1941, he was united in marriage to June Smith in Buffalo Lake. He served on the destroyer, Johnny R. Pierce, in the United States Navy during WW II. Gerald was among the first servicemen to be posted in Hiroshima and Nagasaki after the dropping of the atomic bombs.

After his discharge, they lived in Willmar and he worked for the former Willmar State Hospital (Willmar Regional Treatment Center), serving as Director of Grounds and Maintenance for 42 years, retiring in 1982. Ironically enough, June also worked at the State Hospital for 38 years. They moved to their lake home on Green Lake following their retirement. He was a member of VFW Post #1639. Gerald was baptized and confirmed at Danube Lutheran Church and was a member of Hope Presbyterian Church.

First and foremost, Gerald loved his family and all the time they spent together. He truly enjoyed the many years of work at the Willmar State Hospital, never asking someone to do a job that he wouldn’t do himself. Gerald also enjoyed tending to his beautiful garden and the many rounds of golf with family and friends.

Surviving are his children, Kathy Andersen of St. Cloud and Mike Fischer of Spicer; six grandchildren, Jill, Eric (and Sheryl) and Chris Andersen; Noah (and Kaye) Fischer, Christy (and Scott) Wilkie and Ian (and special friend, Jenna VanEps) Fischer; three great grandchildren, Ethan and Owen Andersen and Liam Fischer. Also surviving are his sister, Harriet Good of Norwood/Young America and his feline companion, Clementine.

He was preceded in death by his parents, wife, June; a son, in infancy and brother, Delton.

Vincent J. Vogelpohl 79, of New London died on Friday, April 30, 2010, at GlenOaks Care Center in New London. A funeral service will be held at 11:00 am on Monday, May 3, 2010, at Paynesville Evangelical Free Church in rural Paynesville. Burial will be at the Paynesville Cemetery. A visitation will be held on Sunday, from 4-7 pm at Johnson Funeral Home in Paynesville and continue one hour prior to the service at the church.

Vincent John Vogelpohl was born on February 13, 1931, in Eden Valley, the son of Erwin and Lena (Blomker) Vogelpohl. He grew up on a farm near Rice Lake in rural Eden Valley. Vincent received his primary school education from a small country school near his family farm. On November 5, 1955, he was united in marriage to Vergeane Lang at Grace United Methodist Church in Paynesville. This union was blessed with a son. The family lived in South Haven before moving to rural New London in 1957, where Vincent became a dairy farmer. In addition to milking he also hauled livestock in the area, hauled milk for Paynesville COOP and Creamery, and worked for Jennie-O from 1987-1999. Vergeane passed away on August 9, 1997, together they shared in 41 years of marriage.

Vincent was a member of Paynesville Evangelical Free Church. He was active there ushering, and as a member on church board.

Vincent was very proud of his dairy cows and of being a dairy farmer. He enjoyed being in the outdoors, throwing horseshoes, traveling, and watching softball games. Family was very important to him, especially his granddaughters. His family will remember how he always cooked the fish at the 4th of July family picnic, and that he was always the first to lend a helping hand to those in need.

Vincent J. Vogelpohl died on Friday, April 30, 2010, at GlenOaks Care Center in New London, he was 79. Vincent is survived by his son, Donald (Karla) of New London; granddaughters, Amanda Vogelpohl, Trista Vogelpohl, and Krystal Vogelpohl. He is also survived by his sisters, Marie Vogelpohl, and Betty Boehl. Vincent was preceded in death by his parents; wife; 3 brothers; and a sister.

Eunice Soderlund,94, of New London, died Thursday, April 29, 2010 at GlenOaks in New London. Her funeral will be 11:00 am, Tuesday at Peace Lutheran Church in New London with visitation one hour prior to the service. Burial will be in Lebanon Cemetery. Arrangements are with Johnson Funeral Home in New London.

Eunice and her twin brother, Eugene Ronald, whom died in infancy, was born on November 30, 1915 near New London, Minnesota on a farm, the daughter of Frances and Esther (Erickson) Soderlund and was baptized that same day. She grew up on the farm and graduated from New London High School in 1933 as Valedictorian. She continued her education at St. Cloud State University graduating with honors earning her Bachelor’s in Education Degree. She taught in rural schools for three years near Priam and New London before teaching in Chandler and Lake Wilson. In 1943, Eunice began teaching in New London where she taught 5th and 6th grade. She served as an elementary principal for many years before returning to the classroom, teaching 3rd grade. After 45 years in education, Eunice retired in 1981.

Other than education and family, Eunice’s other love and devotion was to her church, Peace Lutheran Church. She was a Sunday school teacher and Superintendant for over 54 years; sang in the Senior Choir for 56 yrs; directed the Junior Choir for 35 plus yrs; was a Bible study leader for 36 plus yrs; played in the Peace Bell Choir, taught Vacation Bible School and was a piano teacher for 35 plus years. Eunice was a faithful member of WELCA, always attending all of their meetings.

She is survived by her sister-in-law, Jo Soderlund of Mound; many nieces, nephews, and great nieces and nephews.

Preceding her in death were her parents, twin brother, Eugene and siblings, Willard, LeRoy and Donald.

Dick “Arlo” Dickerson, 54, died Wednesday, April 28, 2010, at his home on Lake Florida.  His funeral will be 11:00 am, Saturday, Redeemer Lutheran Church in Willmar. Burial will be in Clover Leaf Cemetery in Willmar.  Visitation will be from 5—7 pm, Friday at Harvey Anderson Funeral Home in Willmar and continue one hour prior to the service on Saturday.

Arlo B. (Dick) Dickerson Jr. was born on August 7, 1955, the son of Arlo Sr. and Ardella (Henke) Dickerson. He grew up in the Spicer area graduating in 1973, from New London Spicer High School. Dick continued his education at Ridgewater College.  He worked as a mechanic, most recently at Deering's Auto and Towing.

He was baptized, confirmed and was a life time member of Redeemer Lutheran Church.

Dick was an avid sportsman; hunting, fishing, snowmobiling, and golfing were some of his favorite sports. He had participated in dart and pool league for a number of years. Dick enjoyed fixing and repairing and was a natural at his work.

Surviving is his mother Ardella, Spicer; brothers, Bob (and Connie), Spicer, Randy (and Rose) , Kandiyohi, Bill (and Lynae), Willmar; three nephews, Adam, Travis and Jason.

He was preceded in death by his father Arlo.

Sigfred Knutson, age 97 of rural Brooten, died Friday morning, April 23, 2010 at his home. Funeral services will be 2 pm Friday, April 30, 2010 at South Lake Johanna Lutheran Church in rural Brooten. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Visitation will be 5:00 to 7:00 pm Thursday at the Johnson Funeral Home in Belgrade and for one hour prior to the services at the church.

Sigfred Knutson was born on March, 26, 1913 in the Norway Lake Township, near Sunburg, the son of Severin and Sigrid (Westvig) Knutson. He attended District 95 country school. Sigfred was baptized and confirmed at South Lake Johanna Lutheran Church and has remained a life long member. In his early teens, he moved to North Dakota where he worked for farmers and ranchers until his early twenties. On October 21, 1937, Sigfred was united in marriage to Idella Ellingson. To this union two daughters and a son were born. They made their home in the Sunburg area while Sigfred worked for the WPA and then the family moved to Minneapolis where Sigfred worked for Dispatch Oven Company. While living in Minneapolis, he attended and graduated from Dunwoody Institute where he specialized in sheet metal and welding. On August 20, 1948, the family moved back to Brooten where Sigfred took up farming.

Sigfred Knutson passed away quietly in his sleep on Friday morning, April 23, 2010, he was 97. He is survived by his wife of 72 years, Idella Knutson; children, Sonja Bergerson, Kenneth (Linda) Knutson, son-in-law Cleon Zimmerle; 11 grandchildren; 18 great grandchildren; 6 great-great grandchildren. He is also survived by a brother-in-law, Oris Ellingson; a sister-in-law, Doris Knutson; and several nieces and nephews.

Sigfred was preceded in death by his parents; daughter, Sandra Zimmerle; son-in-law, Juwaine Bergerson; 6 brothers and 4 sisters.


Mildred Call, 97, of Willmar, died on Thursday at Bethesda Pleasantview. Her service will be 11:00 am on Tuesday at Calvary Lutheran Church Chapel. Friends may call on Monday from 5 until 7 at Harvey Anderson Funeral Home and on Tuesday 1 hour prior to services at the church. Interment will be at Cloverleaf Cemetery.

Mildred Nora (Helgeson) was born on September 12, 1912, in Arctander Township, Kandiyohi County, Minnesota, one of 13 children born to Norval and Marie (Nelson) Helgeson. She grew up in the Sunburg area on the family farm where she attended District 17 School for her education. Mildred worked as a cook and waitress at Jerry’s Café in Willmar prior to her marriage.

On July 6, 1941, Mildred was united in marriage to C. Raymond Call at the parsonage of Bethel Lutheran Church in Willmar. This union was blessed with two children. Ray preceded her in death on August 25, 1994. Mildred continued to live in Willmar and was a resident at Bethesda Pleasantview at the time of her death.

She was baptized and confirmed at West Lake Lutheran Church and was a member of Calvary Lutheran in Willmar at the time of her death. Mildred had taught Sunday School, was active with the churchwomen and served as a Deaconess at Calvary.

She was active in her community, serving as an Election Judge in Willmar.

Her family recalls traveling to California and Arizona to visit family members. They enjoyed their time at the lake cabin where Mildred would like to fish always using a drop line instead of a fishing pole. In addition to traveling and lake living Mildred enjoyed crocheting, reading, crossword puzzles and being a gracious hostess to her family during the holiday seasons.

Surviving are her children, Ronald (and Nodra) Call, Raymond, Janet (and David) Ulvin, Edina; five grandchildren, Chris Lundgren (and finance, Allen Wittrock), Curtis (and Tanya) Call, Rachel (and Gabe) Jensen, and Ruth (and Sean) Crego, Rolf Ulvin; five great grandchildren, Alyssa Lundgren, Krista (and Alex) Lautenschlager, Megan Call, Jennifer Call and Sebastian Crego. Also surviving are her sisters, Verna Wright, Willmar and Ardis Mullis, Mahtomedi; and nieces, nephews and friends.

In addition to her parents and her husband Ray, she was preceded in death by four brothers, Loren Helgeson, Lester Helgeson, Myron Helgeson, Walter Helgeson and six sisters, Helen Braaten, Frances Helgeson, Gladys Braaten,, Avis Knudsen, Ruth Aguirre and Lillian Burger.

Kay Rierson, age 59 of New London, died unexpectedly at her home on Tuesday, April 20, 20010. Funeral services will be 11:00 a.m. Monday, April 26, 2010 at the Johnson Funeral Home in New London. Burial will be in Cloverleaf Cemetery in Willmar. Visitation will be held one hour prior to the services at the funeral home.

Emily Kay Rierson was born on July 17, 1950 in Willmar, the daughter of Burton and Winnie (Phau) Rierson. She attended Lincoln Elementary and Willmar High School, graduating in 1968. She continued her education at the Willmar Community College and moved to the twin cities in 1980. She later attended St. Cloud State University and received her Bachelor degree in 1990. She just recently moved from the twin cities to New London. While living in Willmar she was a member of Vinje Lutheran Church.

Kay was a loving mother, grandmother, daughter and sister. She will be remembered for her strong and giving spirit and joy of children. She enjoyed watching the Vikings, puzzles, fishing and spending time with family and friends.

Kay died on April 20, 2010 at her home in New London at the age of 59. She is survived by her son, Brad Rierson of Little Falls; four grandchildren; siblings, Richard Rierson of Paynesville, Mike (Karen) Rierson of Shick Skinny, PA, Brenda (Jim) Holtkamp of New London, Steve (Sue) Rierson of Willmar, and DJ Rierson of Hawick and foster sister, Judy Reek of Willmar.

Viola V. Tompt, 87, of Willmar, died Wednesday at Bethesda Pleasantview. Mass of Christian Burial will be 10:30 am, Saturday at Church of St. Mary in Willmar. Friends may call on Friday from 5-7:00 pm, at Harvey Anderson Funeral Home with Parish Prayers at 6:30 pm. The visitation will continue on Saturday one hour prior to services at the church.

Viola Veronica (Heitkamp) was born on January 23, 1923, near Mantador, North Dakota, the daughter of Frank and Lena (Becker) Heitkamp. She grew up on the family farm and attended school in Wahpeton.

On November 15, 1949, Viola was united in marriage to Darwin F. Tompt at Mantador, ND. This union was blessed with seven children. They lived in Colfax, ND until 1964, when they moved to Cedar Rapids, IA. In 1969, they moved to Willmar. Following their retirement, Viola and Darwin wintered in Naples, FL, for a number of years.

She was a member of the American Legion and VFW Auxiliaries.

Viola loved to dance and also taught her sons, so if there was a wedding or any other occasion they would know how. Her family was her life. Sunday dinner as a family has been a tradition that continues to this day. She was so proud of her grandchildren and great grandchildren and the joy they brought to her life. In addition to dancing, her hobbies included bowling; reading and doing word search puzzles and while wintering in Florida, walking on the beach collecting sea shells.

Surviving are her loving husband of 60 years, Darwin; children, Patricia (and Phillip) Wright, Willmar, James (and Elaine) Tompt, Shakopee, Teresa Smith, Sioux Falls, SD, John (and Rebecca) Tompt, Willmar, Jane (and Jeff) Jensen, Willmar, Mary Jo (and Loren) Stadtherr, Willmar, and David (and Kathy) Tompt, Eden Prairie; eleven grandchildren, James (and Angie) Tompt, Josh Stadtherr, Sean (and Holly) Smith, Stephen Smith (and fiancée, Julie Zimmerman), John Tompt, Michael Tompt, Amy (and Michael) Mortensen, Melissa Tompt, Emily (and Noel) Tompt- Barrick, Lindsey Tompt, and Amanda Stadtherr; six great grandchildren, Noah Wright, Elijah Lozano, Halle Mortensen, Jayde Barrick, Nora Barrick and Theodore Mortensen. Also surviving are her siblings, Jerome (and Joan) Heitkamp, Morreton, ND, James Heitkamp, Wahpeton, ND and Dorothy Pederson, Wahpeton, ND.

She was preceded in death by her parents, two brothers, Charles and Bernard Heitkamp; son-in-law, Tim Smith and great granddaughter Shelby Johnson.

Margie J. Holifer, 87, of Paynesville, died on Wednesday, April 21, 2010 at Koronis Manor in Paynesville. A funeral service will be held at 11:00 am on Saturday, April 24, 2010, at Grace United Methodist Church in Paynesville. Burial will be at the Paynesville Cemetery. Margie Jane Holifer was born on September 21, 1922, in Union Grove Township to Joseph and Martha (Harris) Flanders. She graduated from Litchfield High School. Margie was united in marriage to Eugene Schwarts. She was a homemaker and later became the head teller at Community First Bank in Paynesville. She later married Donald Holifer.

Margie was a member of Grace United Methodist Church. She loved to play cards and to dance.

Margie J. Holifer died on Wednesday, April 21, 2010, at Koronis Manor in Paynesville, she was 87. She is survived by her children, Richard (Beverly) Schwartz of New London, Bonnie Schwarts of Paynesville; 6 grandchildren; sisters-in-law, Marguerite Flanders of Grove City, Ellien Flanders of Litchfield, and Eileen Flanders of Paynesville. She was preceded in death by her husband; 13 brothers and sisters; and a grandson.

Hazel Halldin, 82, of Willmar, died Saturday, April 17, 2010 at Bethesda Pleasantview in Willmar. Her funeral will be 10:30 am, Monday, April 26th, 2010 at Assembly of God with burial in Fairview Cemetery in Willmar. Visitation will be from 5-7 pm, Sunday at Harvey Anderson Funeral Home in Willmar.

Hazel was born May 13, 1927 in Yankton, SD, the daughter of Martin and Nora (Dahlerup) Larsen. She spent the first 8 years on a farm near Mission Hills, SD moving with her family to a farm near Lake Wilson, MN in 1935. She graduated from Worthington High School in 1945. She lived in Spokane, WA for a year before returning to Minnesota to attend Beauty School in Mankato, graduating in 1947. Hazel then moved to Willmar. On May 13, 1950 she was united in marriage to Wendell “Curly” Halldin. Hazel and Curly enjoyed over 53 years of marriage together prior to his death on December 31, 2003. This union was blessed with twin sons. Following their marriage they continued to live in Willmar. Hazel was employed for 37 years at KWLM Radio as a bookkeeper and office manager. After her retirement from KWLM, Hazel was the Financial Secretary at Vinje Lutheran Church for about 5 years. She then joined her husband and son, Dan at Halldin Tire until the sale of the family business in 2002.

She was baptized and confirmed in the Lutheran faith and was a member of Vinje Lutheran Church and was active in the ladies aid and on many serving committees.

Hazel shared a love of gardening with Curly spending many hours tending to their private little backyard paradise. She enjoyed many adventures with Curly, traveling throughout the states. She also enjoyed reading and doing crossword puzzles.

God called her home on April 17. She attained the age of 82 years, 11 months and 4 days.

She is survived by her sons; Daniel (Kathy) Halldin of Willmar and Donald (Anastasia) Halldin of Winter Park, FL, four grandchildren, Alexander, Laurel, Arielle and Andrey Halldin; four step grandchildren, Chris and Corey Schueler, Kelly (and Jesse) Gonzalez and Keith Schueler and five step great-grandchildren, Jaden, Lexus, Camren, Tyler and Esmé. Also surviving are sisters; Marie (James) Ransdell of Winters, CA, Leila Larsen of Shoreview, MN and several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her husband, parents, her step-mother Mabel; brother, John and brother-in-law, Raymond Epling.

 


  Caden L. Loe, 11 days, of Belgrade died Sunday, April 18, 2010, at the University of Minnesota Medical Center in Minneapolis. A funeral service will be held at 11:00 am on Thursday, April 22, 2010 at Grace Lutheran Church in Belgrade. Burial will be at Grace East Cemetery. A visitation will be held on Wednesday evening, from 5-8:00 pm at Johnson Funeral Home in Belgrade and continue one hour prior to the service at the church.

Caden Leslie Loe was born on April 7, 2010 at University of Minnesota Medical Center, he was the baby boy of Kurt and Julie (Thompson) Loe. Caden was baptized on April 8, 2010. He became an angel on April 18, 2010, while rocking in his mommy’s arms. During his short time on earth he touched many lives and he will be greatly missed.

Caden L. Loe passed away on April 18, 2010, at the University of Minnesota Medical Center, after being born with organ complications. He is survived by his parents, Kurt and Julie (Thompson) Loe; big brother, Cameron; grandparents, Leslie and Brenda Thompson, Paul Loe, Doris Loe; great grandparents, Robert (Carol) Hansen, Irene (Math) Schmitz, Gerald (Orel Jane) Loe, Marie (Gene) Huth. He is also survived by his aunts and uncles, Nicholas (Michelle) Thompson, Holly Thompson (fiancé, Matt Breitbach), Alexander Thompson, Keith Loe (special friend, Tracie Berg), Kristin (Keith) Binsfeld; cousins, Tyler and Molly Loe, Wyatt Binsfeld, Drew Thompson; god parents, Marcus Haug, Sallie Graves. Caden was preceded in death by his great grandfathers, Mitchell Thompson, Buck Anspach.

Verna Anna Smith, 95, of Murdock, died Sunday April 18, 2010. Her funeral will be at 11 AM Thursday at Calvary Lutheran Church in Murdock. Internment will be in the church cemetery. Visitation will be from 5-7 PM Wednesday at Harvey Anderson Funeral Home in Kerkhoven and will continue one hour prior to the service at the church on Thursday.

Verna was born on August 23, 1914, on a farm in Stark Township, Brown County Minnesota, near Sleepy Eye, the daughter of Albert and Mary (Busack) Penning. When she was two years old, her family moved to a farm in Louriston Township, Chippewa County, near Murdock, where she attended country school district 38. Because of the depression, Verna was unable to complete her high school education taking work as a housekeeper. She worked in Minneapolis for a time taking high school courses during the summer. Because education was important to Verna, she earned her high school diploma from Glenwood High School, going on to graduate from Bemidji State Teacher's College.

On April 8, 1950, she was united in marriage to Kenneth Joseph Smith. They shared almost 42 years of marriage and were blessed with four children. They farmed in Dublin Township, Swift County. Verna served on the Murdock School Board, being the first woman to do so. She was a member of the board during the consolidation of KMS. She was active in PTA, Band Mothers, the Green Thumb Garden Club, Farm Bureau, Homemakers, and was a member of the VFW Auxiliary.

She was a member of Calvary Lutheran Church. She served on the church council, was a Sunday School teacher as well as Superintendent, and was active in the Ladies Aid.

Verna loved to read, was an accomplished seamstress, always had a huge garden. and raised geese and ducks well into her nineties. She especially loved spending time with her grandsons reading books.

God called her home on Sunday, April 18, 2010 from Green Gables Assisted Living, Murdock, Minnesota. She attained the age of 95 years, 6 months, and 18 days.

Surviving are her children, Meridith Anne (and Steve) Flaig of Lamberton; Paul Clay Smith of Moorhead; Gregory Kenneth (and Mary) Smith of Murdock; Gabrielle Ruth Smith of Moorhead; five grandsons, Michael Flaig, Garrett, Dylan and Logan Smith, and Andrew Smith; her sister, Hilda (and Bernard) Strand of Bemidji.

Verna was preceded in death by her parents, Albert and Mary, husband, Kenneth, and brothers, Walter and Paul Penning.

Kathleen Marie (Maher) Siebers, 72, of Sartell died Monday, April 19, 2010 at St. Benedicts Senior Community in St. Cloud. Her Mass of Christian Burial will be 11 am at St. Francis Catholic Church in Benson. Burial will be in Visitation Catholic Cemetery in Danvers at a later date. Visitation will be one hour prior to the service at the church on Thursday. Arrangements are with Harvey Anderson – Johnson Funeral Home in Willmar.

Kathleen was born on October 1, 1937, in Marysland Township, Swift County, Minnesota, the daughter of Martin and Regena (Bouta) Maher. She attended country school #47 and graduated from Benson High School in 1955. She continued her education at St. Cloud Hospital School of Nursing, graduating in 1958. Kathleen entered St. Benedicts Monastery on September 12, 1958. She served St. Benedicts as a nurse in various healthcare facilities in Minnesota and Utah, before leaving St. Benedicts in 1978.

She met her husband to be, Carlton Siebers in Portland, Oregon while working at St. Vincent’s Hospital. They were united in marriage on December 11, 1982. They continued to live in Portland. Carlton preceded her in death on April 2, 1989. Kathleen retired in 1999 and moved to St. Cloud in 2000 and later to Sartell.

She was a member of St. Mary’s Cathedral in St. Cloud where she was a foster grandparent and served meals to the poor. She continued to be a supporter of St. Benedicts where she remained an Benedictine Oblate. She had a great love of nature and also enjoyed reading. She loved people and was always non-judgmental, accepting everyone for who they were and nothing else.

Surviving are her significant other, Leslie Holm of Sartell; step-children, Shelly (and H.Tracy) DuBois of Seattle, WA; Kurt (and Cindy) Siebers of Hansville, WA; step-grandchildren, Bobby and Breanna Siebers. Also surviving are her siblings, Patrick (and Shirley) Maher of Benson; Marjorie Przybylski of Plymouth; Mary (and Robert) Schiller of St. Cloud and numerous nieces and nephews.

Besides her husband, she was preceded in death by her parents and brother-in-law, Ed Przybylski.


Alvin H. Yates, 83, of Pennock died Saturday, April 17, 2010, at Bethesda Heritage Center in Willmar. His funeral service will be 1:30 Thursday at Ebenezer Lutheran Church in Kandiyohi. Visitation will be from 12 noon until the time of service at the church on Thursday. Burial is in the church cemetery with Military Honors provided by the Willmar American Legion post 167. Arrangements are with Harvey Anderson Funeral Home in Willmar.

Alvin was born August 7, 1926, in Camden, SC, the son of Matthew and Louise (Rouse) Yates. He received his schooling in La Grange, North Carolina. In April 1944, Alvin joined the US Navy and was stationed mainly in the Philippines during WWII. He was honorable discharged in June 1946, and worked as a mechanic for one year. He was united in marriage to Violet Jesson on June 1947. Alvin than began his working career with National Cash Register Company of Dayton, OH. He worked in North Carolina and Indiana, prior to moving to Minnesota in 1966. He retired from NCR in 1989, after 44 years of service to the company. On March 22, 1989, he was united in marriage to Grace Carls. Following their marriage they lived in Pennock.

Alvin was a member of Ebenezer Lutheran Church in Kandiyohi, where he had been active as an usher.

He was a member of VFW and the American Legion.

Alvin enjoyed his hobbies of fishing and hunting, repairing clocks and had a great love for gardening.

Surviving are his wife, Grace of Pennock; daughter, Cheryl Brown of Belle Glade, FL; step-daughter, Juanita (Donovan) Halverson of Kekhoven; step-son, Calvin (Arlene) Carls of Pennock; four step-granddaughters, Gretchen (Kelly) Hauge, Becky (Troy) Spanier, Alicia (Dana) Molenaar, Katie Carls and special friend, Tim Kiser; six step great-grandchildren, Brook & Kayla, Dillion & Ethan, Matthew & Ella Grace; and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, sisters, Thelma and Madeline, his first wife, Violet, son-in-law, Scott Brown, step-son, Ellery Carls, step great-granddaughter, Angela Carls.

Robert W. Wohnoutka 75, of Spicer died on Saturday morning, April 17, 2010 at Rice Memorial Hospital in Willmar. A Memorial Mass will be held at 11:00 am on Wednesday, April 21, 2010, at Our Lady of The Lakes Catholic Church in rural Spicer. Inurnment will be at the church cemetery. A gathering of friends and family will be held on Tuesday night from 5-7:00 pm with Parish Prayers being held at 7:00 pm at Our Lady of the Lakes Catholic Church. Arrangements are with the Johnson Funeral Home in New London.

Robert William Wohnoutka was born on September 3, 1934 in Bechyn, the son of William J. and Helena T. (Frank) Wohnoutka. He attended Olivia High School, graduating in 1952. On October 11, 1968, Bob was united in marriage to Diane Malecek in Watertown, SD. They made their home in Spicer, where he worked as a senior engineer specialist for MN DOT., retiring in 1989. Bob and Diane were able to share in 41 years of marriage.

Bob was a member of Our Lady of the Lakes Catholic Church in Spicer. He was also a member of Catholic Aid Association, American Legion and served on the Skyline Board. He enjoyed playing cards with friends, polishing rocks, fishing, and was an avid sports fan. He had a passion for gardening and his generous spirit was evident as he shared his produce with many friends and neighbors. He was a loving husband, father and grandfather who cherished his time spent with his family, especially his grandchildren.

He is survived by his wife, Diane of Spicer; children, Denise (special friend, Kevin) Wohnoutka of Spicer, Perry Wohnoutka of Spicer, Terry (Srey) Austin of Shoreview, Kim (Chris) Strait of Killeen, TX, David (Victoria) Wohnoutka of Spicer, Mike (Anna) Wohnoutka of Minneapolis, Gayle (Ross) Brouwer of Willmar; 13 Grandchildren, 3 great grandchildren; siblings, Margaret (Richard) Bergo of Spicer, Therese Kragenbring of Atwater, Phyllis (Chris) Berninger of Crawfordville, FL, Betty (Marvin) Dubert of Hosford, FL, Jerry (Sue) Wohnoutka of Richfield, Jim (Kathy) Wohnoutka of Minneota, Dianne (Allen) Nichols of Punta Gorda, FL, Karen (Dennis) Barta of Olivia, Greg (Becky) Wohnoutka Sparks, NV, Deb (Lionel) Kull of Rice.

  Maria Guadalupe Hernandez, infant daughter of Claudia (Soto) and Steve Hernandez of Willmar, died on Monday April 12, 2010, at Rice Memorial Hospital. Her service will be 10:30 am Tuesday at the Church of St. Mary in Willmar. Interment will be in the church cemetery. Friends may call 1 hour prior to services at the church.

In addition to her parents, Maria is survived by her brother, Miguel Angel Hernandez, at home and her paternal grandparents, Noe and Delia V. Hernandez of Willmar and numerous uncles aunts and other family members.


Adelaide “Luella” Flom, age 97 of Willmar died on Tuesday, April 13, 2010 at Bethesda Heritage Center in Willmar. Funeral service will be 1:00 pm on Saturday at First Presbyterian Church in Willmar. Burial will be at Cloverleaf Cemetery. Visitation will be one hour prior to the service at the church on Saturday. Arrangements are with Harvey Anderson Funeral Home in Willmar.

She was a member of First Presbyterian Church where she was active in Women’s Circle. She also volunteered at Rice Memorial Hospital in Willmar. She was an avid reader.

Luella’s wonderful sense of humor, sweet disposition and love of family will be missed by all who knew her.

She was preceded in death by her parents, daughter Mary Hemming in 2004, daughter-in-law, Jill Flom in 2008.


Charles Band, 48, of Willmar, died Monday, April 12, 2010. His funeral will be 10:30 am, Tuesday, April 27, 2010 at First Covenant Church in Willmar. Burial will be in Fairview Cemetery in Willmar. Visitation will be on Monday, April 26, 2010 at Harvey Anderson Funeral Home from 5-7 pm and continue one hour prior to the service at the church on Tuesday.

Charles was born on October 12, 1961, the son of Lester and Murlaine (Bloom) Band. He grew up near Willmar and attended Willmar Public Schools where he graduated. He was employed at Pizza Hut in Willmar for over 20 years. He was a sports enthusiast, always watching the Twins, Vikings, Timberwolves and attended as many Willmar Cardinal games as he could. He also enjoyed all kinds of music, attending many concerts at WEAC.

He belonged to First Covenant Church where he had been an usher.

Surviving are his sister, Bonnie (and Stan) Johnson of Beverly Hills, FL; three nieces, Hollie, Vanessa and Raina Johnson.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

Steven “Butch” Becker, age 50 of Willmar, died on Monday, April 12, 2010 at the Rice Memorial Hospital in Willmar. Funeral service will be 11:00 am Friday at Bethel Lutheran Church in Willmar. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Visitation will be from 5-7pm on Thursday at Harvey Anderson Funeral Home in Willmar and will continue one hour prior to the service at the church on Friday.

Steven Earl “Butch” Becker was born on February 27, 1960 in Pipestone, Minnesota, the son of Eldon and Joyce (Beatty) Sommers. He graduated from Pipestone High School in 1978. Butch lived and worked in Pipestone and later Olivia for U.B.C. He was united in marriage to Denise Williams on April 4, 1987 at the Cross of Calvary Lutheran Church in Olivia. The couple moved to Willmar in 1988 where Butch worked for Perkin’s Lumber Company in Willmar and Spicer. He was most recently employed by the Willmar Public Schools.

Butch was baptized and confirmed in the Christian Faith, and was a member of Bethel Lutheran Church in Willmar where he was active on the Christian Education Committee, and a Cub Scout Leader.

Butch enjoyed spending time with his sons, whether coaching rec sports or hunting and fishing. He also enjoyed spending time at the lake, and was a sports fan, especially enjoying the Twins.

Butch is survived by his wife Denise Becker; sons: Steven Becker and Matthew Becker all of Willmar; mother Joyce Sommers of Pipestone; siblings: Darron Becker of Albert Lea, Gwen Becker of St. Paul, Rick (Korine) Sommers of Raymond; and several nieces and nephews.

Butch is preceded in death by his father and grandparents.

Lynnette Marie Lindholm, 49, of New London, died Monday, April 12, 2010 in Willmar. Her funeral will be 11:00 am, Thursday at Evangelical Free Church in Willmar. Visitation will be from 5-7 pm, Wednesday with a Time of Sharing at 7:00 pm, at Harvey Anderson Funeral Home in Willmar and continue one hour prior to the service at the church on Thursday.

Lynnette was born on October 25, 1960, in New London, Minnesota, the daughter of Arthur and Marlys (Bolin) Lindholm. While growing up, she lived in Red Wing and the Twin Cities, graduating from Wayzata High School in 1979. She continued her education at Minneapolis Technical College. In 1985, she was united in marriage to William Robert Bregel in Minneapolis. Following their marriage, they moved to Willmar. She was a volunteer at Kandi -Cupboard for many years before becoming the manager where she worked for 10 years. Most recently, Lynnette was a CNA at GlenOaks in New London.

She was a member of Grace Communion International Church. Some of Lynnette’s hobbies were: music, dancing, throwing parties, mini-golf, gardening and traveling.

Surviving are her children, Nina Bregel of Brooklyn Park; Mike Bregel of Duluth; Jessica Corvinus of Brooklyn Park and her grandson, Kayden. Also surviving are her brothers, Tony (and Linda) Lindholm of Princeton; Tim (and Hope) Lindholm of Becker and John Lindholm of St. Cloud.

She was preceded in death by her parents.

Claude “Marty” Martindale, age 70, of Spicer died on Monday, April 12, 2010 at Fairview University Hospital in Minneapolis. Memorial service will be 2pm on Thursday at the Willmar Assembly of God. Visitation time with the family will be one hour prior to the service at the church. West Central Cremation Service, Willmar. Memorials preferred to American Heart Association, American Kidney Foundation, American Diabetes Association or Rice Memorial Hospital Dialysis Foundation.

Claude Carter “Marty” Martindale was born on October 20, 1939 in Columbus, Ohio, the son of Mac and Anna (Smouse) Martindale. He grew up in Columbus where he attended school. Marty enlisted in the United States Navy where he was stationed in Iceland and received an honorable discharge in 1964. He began working for United Airlines in Florida and later transferred to California where he continued to work for United. Marty discovered his life’s passion, becoming a commercial fisherman, where he fished crab, tuna, and other fish from California to Washington State. He later continued his education, graduating from Chabot College in Hayward. He was united in marriage to Lois Jean Picha on December 8, 1978 in California. The couple lived many years in California and later moved to Spicer in 1995.

Marty kept busy throughout his life, raising horses, restoring classic cars and making and selling fishing lures. He enjoyed wood working, making model boats and fishing of all kinds. He had a love for life and enjoyed adventure. His friends and family remember how he lived life to the fullest, “telling tales and fishing for whales.”

Marty died on Monday, April 12, 2010 at Fairview University Hospital in Minneapolis at the age of 70 years. He is survived by his wife, Lois Picha of Spicer; daughter, Claudette (Branden) Picanco of Modesto, CA; sons: David and Darryl Martindale of Ft. Worth, TX; six grandchildren: Haille, Lucas, Amanda, Claude, Mac, and Levi; siblings: Kay Martindale of Columbus, OH, Caryl (Ken) Kemper of Granville, OH, John (Jill) Martindale of Plain City, OH; and his niece and five nephews.

Marty was preceded in death by his parents.

Henry Ledeboer, 80, of Willmar, died Monday, April 12, 2010 at Bethesda Heritage Center in Willmar. His funeral will be 1:30 pm, Friday at First Reformed Church in Willmar. Henry was born on January 17, 1930, in Holland Township, Kandiyohi County, Minnesota, the son of Garrit H. and Jennie (Ypma) Ledeboer. He grew up in Prinsburg, attending Prinsburg Christian School and Clara City High School. He served in the United States Navy, receiving his Honorable Discharge in 1949.

On September 6, 1950, he was united in marriage to Beverly Hoekstra at Roseland Reformed Church. Following their marriage, they lived in Willmar and Henry worked as the warehouse foreman for Gamble Robinson for over 40 years. He retired in 2005 from Willmar Public Schools where he worked as a custodian. Henry served as a volunteer fireman for the Willmar Fire Department for 23 years, retiring in 1983.

He was baptized at Prinsburg Christian Reformed Church and made his Confession of Faith at Roseland Reformed Church in 1951. Henry served as an elder, deacon, taught Sunday school and was a member of the men’s Bible club at First Reformed Church where he was a member.

Surviving are his wife, Beverly of Willmar; sons, Roger (and Peggy) Ledeboer of Maple Grove; Scott (and Ann) Ledeboer of Willmar; daughter, Jane C. Ledeboer of Waupun, WI; three grandchildren, Nathan Ledeboer, Sarah (and Dan) Marek, Rachal (and Ben) Wolthuizen; four great grandchildren, Sam and Isaac Marek and Ellie and Drew Wolthuizen. Also surviving are his siblings, Ella Haan of Denver, CO; William Ledeboer of Prinsburg; Albert (and Phyllis) Ledeboer of Prinsburg; Margaret Negen of Willmar and his sister-in-law, Grace Ledeboer of Willmar.

He was preceded in death by his parents, twin sister in infancy and brothers, Lewis, Herman and Garrit.


Scott Noethe, 53, of Delton, MI, passed away March 31, 2010, due to injuries sustained in a motorcycle accident. A memorial service was conducted on Tuesday, April 6, 2010, at Faith United Methodist Church in Delton, MI. There will be a Celebration of Life Visitation at Peace Lutheran Church in New London on Saturday, April 17, 2010, from 2:00-4:00 pm, with a short prayer service at 2:00 pm. Please dress in casual attire in Scott’s honor. Arrangements are with Johnson Funeral Home in New London.

Scott was born February 27, 1957, in New London, Minnesota to Herman and Eunice (Peterson) Noethe. Scott was baptized at First Lutheran Church of Norway Lake and confirmed at Peace Lutheran Church in New London. He graduated from New London-Spicer High School in 1975.

Scott had various jobs, including construction in the New London area prior to moving to Michigan. He was a proud father of two children, Kelsey and Joey.

He was a postal route carrier in Michigan for the United States Postal Service for the past 20 years and was currently in maintenance at the Oshtemo Distribution Center.

Scott enjoyed riding his Harley, working on stock cars, hunting and fishing. He participated in numerous sports throughout his younger years. He continued to follow the Minnesota teams with great pride and support.

On May 14, 2002, he married Marielle Cousins. They enjoyed the peace and quiet of their home they were building in the country near Delton. Marielle preceded him in death on February 28, 2007.

Scott is survived by son, Joseph Noethe of Paoli, Oklahoma; daughter, Kelsey Barker of North Carolina; parents, Herman and Eunice Noethe of New London, Minnesota; brother, Kendall (Robin) Noethe of Moultrie, Georgia; sister, Kristine (Gary) Ehlinger of Lakeville, Minnesota; aunts, Muriel (Gordon) Strom, Alice (Bob) Morin and Elaine (Waldo) Abraham; his father and mother-in-law, Richard and Carol Cousins; and several nieces, nephews, aunts and uncles.

Viola Miller, 81, of Maynard, died Thursday, April 8, 2010 at her home surrounded by her family. Her funeral will be 11:00 am, Monday, April 12, 2010 at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Clara City. Burial will be in Buffalo Lake Lutheran Cemetery, rural DeGraff. Visitation will be from 5-8 pm, Sunday at Harvey Anderson Funeral Home in Willmar and continue one hour prior to the service at the church on Monday.

Viola was born on July 1, 1928, near Springfield, Minnesota, the daughter of Walter Sr. and Minnie (Elsing) Tomschin. She grew up in the Springfield area where she attended country school. In 1944, she moved to the DeGraff area.

On June 19, 1947, she was united in marriage to Merlin Miller at the Kerkhoven Lutheran Church Parsonage. Following their marriage, they lived near DeGraff until 1958 when they moved to their current home. Merlin and Viola farmed together until retiring in 1986.

Viola was a member of Buffalo Lake Lutheran Church. She loved quilting, belonging to Immanuel Lutheran Church Quilters.

Surviving are her children, Nancy (and Chuck) Anderson of Rice; Jerry (and Karol) Miller of Smartsville, CA; Rodney (and Barbara) Miller of Raymond; Kathy Mahlum of Kerkhoven; Linda (and Kevin) Korn of DeSmet, SD; Eric (and Terry Jo) Miller of Clara City; Mark (and Kim) Miller of Clara City; daughter-in-law, Sandi (and Tom) Gunter of Clara City; 23 grandchildren and 12 great grandchildren. Also surviving are her siblings, Walter Tomschin of Springfield; Minnie (and Ralph) Holmberg of Minneapolis; John (and Mildred) Tomschin of New Hope; Louis (and Phyllis) Tomschin of Alden; Alice (and Dennis) Shumway of Heron Lake; brother-in-law, Leonard Wersel of Owatonna and a very special family friend, Jean Miller of Clarkfield.

She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, Merlin in 2006; son, Terry in 1987; three brothers, Clarence, Charlie and Ben and sister, Dorothy Wersel.

Robert D. Peterson 83, of New London, died on Thursday, April 8, 2010, at Rice Memorial Hospital in Willmar. Funeral services will be 11:00 a.m. Wednesday, April 14, 2010 at Peace Lutheran Church in New London. Burial will be in Fairview Cemetery in Willmar. Visitation will be 5:00 to 8:00 p.m. Tuesday at the Johnson Funeral Home in New London and for one hour prior to the services at the church.

Son of the late Elroy and Myrtle (Johnson) Peterson, Bob was born in Willmar, on May 18th, 1926. He graduated from Willmar High School in 1944 and enlisted in the Naval Air Corps. After the war, he enrolled at the University of Minnesota. He completed his education at Augsburg College.

Bob was united in marriage to his high school sweetheart, Betty Westphal, in June of 1948.

They made their home in New London in 1949 where they both taught at New London High School. After a few years of teaching, Bob was hired by the Post Office and served as clerk and was promoted to Post Master in New London. He retired in 1983.

Bob was an active member of Trinity/Peace Lutheran Church in New London. Bob also served as a Scout Master, a New London School Board Member and a County Draft Board Member for many years.

Survived by his wife of 61 years, Betty and four sons: Todd (Ellen) Peterson of West Chester, PA; Timm Peterson of New London; Terry (Peg) Peterson of Spicer and Troy (Robin) Peterson of Brookfield, WI. Bob also leaves 13 grandchildren and 2 great-grandchildren. Preceded by his sister Pat Olesen.

Ronald V. Ciminski, 74, of Willmar, died Wednesday, April 7, 2010 at Park Nicollet Methodist Hospital in St. Louis Park. His service will be 2:00 pm, Saturday at Harvey Anderson Funeral Home in Willmar with visitation one hour prior to the service.

Ronald Verne Ciminski was born in International Falls, Minnesota, on April 13, 1935, to Valentine and Elizabeth Ciminski. He died Wednesday evening, April 7, 2010, at Park Nicollet Methodist Hospital, St. Louis Park, Minnesota, after an extended illness.

He attended elementary school at St. Thomas School, International Falls, Minnesota. Following high school graduation from Falls High School where he served as Senior Class President, he was employed at the Boise Cascade Company and attended the University of Minnesota. He rode the train back and forth to college. He was a parking lot attendant and also tutored the football players. Ron received his Bachelor’s Degree from the U.of M. Another highlight was a trip to London with the Civil Air Patrol. He received his Master’s Degree from George Washington University. In September of 1957, he and Audrey Kotula were married, and they moved to Kensington, Maryland, where Ron worked in the Personnel Department of the National Institute of Health in Washington, D.C. He and Audrey had two sons, Robert David (1958) and John Ronald (1963). They moved back to Minnesota in 1969, and to Long Prairie, where they were managers of the Sears Catalog Store. Ron also worked for the Long Prairie Leader Newspaper and was a Boy Scout Explorer leader.

After a divorce, Ron returned to International Falls to live, developed serious health problems, and spent some time in St. Luke’s Hospital in Duluth. Following his recovery and the death of his mother, he came back to Long Prairie, and was employed by Cathedral Press. He was the AWANA (Wednesday night Youth Program) Commander at the First Baptist Church in Long Prairie from 1978 to 1987.

On June 27, 1987, he and Patricia Appelgren of Willmar, Minnesota were married. They resided in Willmar where Ron was employed at Minnesota Express Trucking Company, Somody Supply and Office Max. In August of 2001, they moved to Palm Springs, California. In June of 2009, they moved back to Willmar.

Ron was an historian, read and studied our country’s history extensively, and especially loved the Bible’s Old Testament history. When anyone was traveling in the United States with Ron, it was always so interesting to hear the stories and history about all the places along the way

His parents and his brother Richard preceded Ron in death. Surviving are his wife Patricia; his sister Carole and husband Jerry Snyder of Plymouth, Minnesota; his brother Randy and wife Debbie of International Falls; his son Robert of Florida, his son John and wife Margaret of Niwot, Colorado; grandchildren Joe, Marie and Rachel; also several nieces and nephews.

Ron has a very special place in so many people’s hearts and lives. We are forever grateful to have known and loved him.


Rebecca L. Westvig, 42, of Paynesville died on Tuesday night, April 6, 2010, at Quiet Oaks Hospice House in St. Augusta. A memorial service will be held at 3:00 pm Sunday, April 11, at Nordland Lutheran Church in rural Paynesville. Burial will be at the Paynesville Cemetery. A visitation will be held from 1-3:00pm at Nordland Lutheran Church in rural Paynesville. In lieu of flowers memorials are preferred.

Rebecca Lynn Westvig was born on October 8, 1967, in Crosby Minnesota, the daughter of Robert and Linda (Ford) Westvig. She grew up in Paynesville where she graduated from Paynesville High School in 1986. After high school Rebecca attended cosmetology school in Coon Rapids. She went on to work at three salons in the Twin Cities area. Rebecca was also a long time representative for Young Living Essential Oils. In 2008 she moved back to Paynesville, due to her health.

Rebecca loved growing plants and keeping a flower garden in the spring and summer. She was an excellent artist, her family cherishes the paintings and drawings she did for them. Rebecca also loved her cats dearly, and kept a salt water fish tank.

Rebecca Lynn Westvig died on Tuesday night, April 6, 2010, at Quiet Oaks Hospice House in St. Augusta, following a long battle with cancer. She was 42. Rebecca is survived by her mother, Linda Westvig of Paynesville; siblings, Rick Westvig of Maple Wood, Roxanne (Bruce) Nielsen of Lake Benton, Russ (Darla) Westvig of Big Lake; 4 nieces and a nephew.

She was preceded in death by her father, Robert; and her grandparents.

Mildred H. Foshager 89, of Willmar died on Tuesday, March 30, 2010, at Rice Memorial Hospital in Willmar. A memorial service will be held at 11:00 am, Saturday, April 3, 2010, at Peace Lutheran Church in New London. Inurnment will be held at 9:00 am on Saturday, April 3, at Calvary Lutheran Cemetery in Willmar. Visitation will be one hour prior to the service.

Mildred was born on August 30, 1920 in Willmar, the daughter of Fred and Seina (Noor) Mead. She grew up in central Minnesota where she attended grade school. On February 14, 1942 Mildred was united in marriage to Lawrence Foshager. This union was blessed with a daughter. The family made their home south of Willmar where they farmed. In 1969 Lawrence retired and they moved into Willmar. Mildred began work in the kitchen for Bethesda Heritage Retirement Home. She worked there for many years before her retirement.
Mildred was a member of Vinje Lutheran Church in Willmar. She enjoyed gardening, and canning all the fresh vegetables that she grew.

She is survived by her daughter, Joyce Barber of New London; grandsons, David (Peggy) of North Ogden, UT, and Duane (Shawna Palmquist) of New London; 13 great grandchildren. She is also survived by a sisters-in-law Eleanor Mead, Gladys Beck and May Roisum. Mildred was preceded in death by her parents; son-in-law, Richard Barber; 2 grandsons, Butch and Rickie; brother, Lester.

  Albert M. King 88, of Willmar and formerly of Westport, MA, died on Monday 29, 2010, at Bethesda Pleasantview Nursing Home in Willmar, Minnesota. A memorial service will be held at 2:15 pm on April 6, 2010 at Bethesda Pleasantview Chapel. Interment services will be held on Monday April 5th at Beech Grove Cemetery, Westport, MA. Local arrangements are with Harvey Anderson Funeral Home.

Albert Martin King was born on May 22, 1921, in Hawick, Minnesota, the son of William Dextor and Jesse May (Barber) King. He grew up in New London, Minnesota where he attended his schooling.

He served in the US Marine Corps from March 14, 1942 through March 15, 1946.

On March 28, 1946, Albert was united in marriage to Irene Lena DeCosta in Minneapolis, Minnesota. Following their marriage they moved to West Port, MA where he worked as a Machinist for 40 years, retiring in 1984. Irene preceded him in death in August 2000. Following her death Albert moved back to Minnesota to
