Friends may call on Wednesday February 17th from 5 until 7 pm at Harvey Anderson Funeral Home and on Thursday one hour prior to services at the church.
Phyllis Ruth Moeller was born on December 20, 1927, the second child of Victor Hans and Mary (Crosby) Moeller at Worthington, MN. The nickname “Putter”, which came from children’s mispronunciation, started at the age of two and would follow her all through life. Putter was baptized and confirmed in the Catholic Church at Worthington.
Putter graduated from Worthington High School in 1945, a National Honor Society student and matriculated to Mankato State Teachers College (now U, of Mankato) where she completed a four year course of study in three years with a Bachelor of Science degree majoring in Art with Minors in Music and English. Putter was honored as a member of Who’s Who in American Colleges in the 1948-49 academic year.
After college, she accepted a position, teaching Art at the high school in Devils Lake, ND, during the 1949-50 academic year.
On June 17, 1950, she married Frank Edward Wilkins at St. Johns Catholic Parish house in Mankato. Her husband’s employment would take them to St. Paul, Mankato and to Willmar in March of 1955.
In 1956, she began teaching piano students at More’s School of Music, which transferred to Jerry Olson’s Music Store. Later, she would develop her own program and teach from home. She officially retired in 1992.
Putter had a short, secret military career while in high school during WW II as Company Clerk of the Worthington Home Guard, (none of the men could take dictation or type). Her music career started by playing clarinet in the Worthington Junior and Senior High School Bands under the direction of her father Vic Moeller, a famous band leader, who would go onto accept the position as Band Director at Mankato State in 1945, and Putter would again be playing for her father’s band, while she was in college. Her last band duty was with Willmar’s own Community Band, which she retired from in 2007.

Eugene Quenzel Hayden, 84, of Willmar died Friday at his home. The service will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, January 16 at Evangelical Free Church of Willmar, with visitation one hour prior to service. Reviewal will be Friday, January 15 from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. at Harvey Anderson Funeral Home. Burial will be at Cloverleaf Cemetary.
Eugene Quenzel Hayden was born April 22, 1925 in Salina, Kansas to Roy and Mabel (Quenzel) Hayden. His father died of pneumonia 13 days before he was born. He had three brothers and two sisters, one surviving, Evan (Betty) Hayden of Salina, Kansas.
Gene left school and enlisted in the Navy when he was 17. He served during WWII on the USS Soubarissen and a destroyer escort, and was in Okinawa when the war ended. After the war, he went back to Salina and finished High School. He was married and raised five children, Quay (Karen), Ronald, Vergene (Pete) Robinson, Kyle (Tammy) and Sonja (Mike) Schultz. They had nine grandchildren and five great-grandchildren. Gene worked in electronics with the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) in Alexandria, MN and Farmington, MN, and studied many courses during his career. He also taught at the FAA Academy in Oklahoma City for six years. He retired from the FAA on July 12, 1980. Gene always spoke highly of the FAA and felt fortunate to have had a good career.
Gene enjoyed a life of service, both as a military man and in Boy Scouts of America. He was active with Boy Scouts most of his life, with his sons and grandsons, and as a leader. For many years and even last year Gene went to Camp Wilderness summer and winter camp with the Alexandria, MN troop #412. This was a very special time for him and a trip he took every year – along with his gumball machine. Gene also looked forward to his annual trip with his friends to the Kiamichi Christian Camp in the hills of Oklahoma. Gene also enjoyed volunteering at the Thrift Store in Willmar. He was a member of the Evangelical Free Church of Willmar and enjoyed worshiping God in his church and serving as an usher both in Willmar and in Alexandria at Calvary Lutheran Church.
In September of 1990, Gene married Carole Hauptli and together they enjoyed spending time with their family, including Darvin (Becky) Hauptli, Deanna (Lonny) Savoie, Janet (David) Anderson, and Kristen (Benjamin) Panchyshyn, and nine grandchildren and one great-grandson. Gene and Carole went square dancing, traveled, and took annual trips to Gene's ship and class reunions. “Papa”, as all the grandchildren called him, was a beloved part of the family. He always made time for everyone, especially the grandkids. Gene and Carole never took a trip that didn't include postcards home to the little ones. Grandpa loved to find special toys, especially singing dogs or fish or whatever silly thing to amuse the kids. He collected coins for each one of them, made videotapes of their favorite cartoons, had “raisin/cheese/pickle breaks”, depending on the likes of the grandchild, and generally just delighted in the joy of the family. When Gene's son Ronald would visit it was clear that his love of silly toys and bringing joy to others was a common trait with the two of them.
Gene was generous with his time, talents, and treasures. He easily gave all he had to anyone and found joy in making others happy. He also loved collecting – records especially, but also coffee mugs, frogs, or anything that caught his fancy. He had a way of making every person feel special. Even through his illness he always enjoyed his family and friends. He continually thanked them for visiting and encouraged the little ones to sit on his lap. When anyone would pray for him, Gene would end their time by praying for them in return, even at the very end of his life. He lived a life of passion – he prayed to the Lord in a way that made it clear he was talking to his best friend. He loved “Jessica” from Murder She Wrote, finding treasures throughout the year to give at Christmas time, and playing Santa for the kids – and through all his passions he brought joy to those around him.
At the age of 84, Eugene peacefully went to be with the Lord on Friday, January 8, 2010 after a lengthy illness. During his illness he was always patient and good natured, yet he told family and friends that he was ready to be with the Lord. While we rejoice that he is in Heaven, he will be greatly missed. |

Dr. John Docksey, 87, of Willmar, died Saturday, December 12, 2009 in Billings, MT. His Mass of Christian Burial will be 10:30, Monday, December 28th 2009 at Church of St. Mary in Willmar. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Visitation will be on Sunday from 4-7 pm at Harvey Anderson Funeral Home in Willmar with a parish prayer service at 6:30 pm and continue one hour prior to the service at the church on Monday.
Dr. John W. Docksey was born October 16, 1922, in Jackson Michigan, the son of Ralph and Ethel (Eldred) Docksey, and the younger brother of Elizabeth Jean Docksey. He died in Billings, Montana on December 12, 2009, with his daughter, Anne Newell, sitting at his bedside. While at student at Michigan State College of Agriculture and Applied Science, John Docksey participated in Army ROTC. Heeding the call of his country, John left Michigan State in March, 1943, to enlist in the Navy. Cognizant of his keen mind and determined spirit, the Navy enrolled John in Midshipmen’s School, and sent him to Dartmouth and Northwestern University to continue his education. Upon graduation from Midshipmen’s School, the Navy assigned Ensign Docksey to the Pacific theater, where he served aboard the Cruiser Minelayer USS Weehawken through the end of World War II and until October 9, 1945, when the USS Weehawken sank in a typhoon off Okinawa. Upon his return to the United States, Ensign Docksey was promoted to Lieutenant (J.G.) and assigned to Naval Station Great Lakes until his discharge from the Navy in September, 1946.
John Docksey enrolled in Medical School at Marquette University in the fall of 1946. Based on classes completed at Marquette, he received a Bachelor of Science Degree from Michigan State in August, 1947, and a Medicinae Doctoris (Medical Doctor) Degree from Marquette University in June, 1950. While a student at Marquette, he was a member of the medical fraternity Alpha Kappa Kappa; upon graduation he was inducted into Alpha Omega Alpha, an honor society for top medical school graduates. Re-commissioned in the Navy, Dr. (Lieutenant J.G) Docksey completed his Internship in Medicine and Surgery at the National Naval Medical Center in Philadelphia in June, 1951, and he completed his Residency in General Surgery at the Veteran’s Hospital in Milwaukee in July, 1955. Doctor Docksey was Board Certified in Surgery, and licensed to practice Medicine and Surgery in Wisconsin, Minnesota, and South Dakota.
Dr. Docksey joined the Willmar Clinic in 1956 and practiced medicine and surgery until his retirement in 1989. During his 33-year tenure, the 7-physician Willmar Clinic grew into a 130-physician regional medical center. While Rice Memorial was his home hospital, Dr. Docksey performed surgery in hospitals around west-central Minnesota and into eastern South Dakota, often traveling in his single-engine airplane. Throughout his medical career, he cared deeply for his patients and their families. Late dinners were invariably followed by a trip to the hospital to check on patients and to comfort their families; evenings and weekends were frequently punctuated by house calls on patients who didn’t want to wait until the next day to see Dr. Docksey. Twenty years following his retirement, former patients would stop him on the street to thank him for life-saving surgery. Remarkably, he never seemed to forget a patient or a surgical procedure.
John Docksey married the love of his life, Marilyn Ruth Skinner, in Wausau, Wisconsin on June 17, 1950. John and Marilyn celebrated their 57th wedding anniversary in 2007, shortly before Marilyn’s death on October 29th of that year. A devoted husband, John never overcame the loss of Marilyn. In the week preceding his death, John reported that Marilyn was tapping on his shoulder, telling him that it was time for him to follow her.
John and Marilyn were blessed with eight children and nineteen grandchildren. With his wife, John instilled in his children love of country, a thirst for knowledge, compassion for others, and a firm belief in the merits of hard work and individual responsibility. John was proud of the fact that all eight of his children graduated from college and, with his wife, established a trust to assist with the education of their grandchildren. Upon Marilyn’s death, he established a scholarship in her name at Ridgewater College.
On December 12, 2009, John Docksey took leave of this world to join Marilyn in the next. Preceded in death by Marilyn, his parents “Gramps” and “Dee,” his sister “Betty,” and his granddaughter Anne Mullaney, John is survived by eight children, eighteen grandchildren, and countless friends, colleagues and patients who know that the world is a sadder place without his wisdom, wit, and compassion. His family takes comfort in the fact that John is once again dancing with Marilyn, and in the knowledge that heaven can only be a better place with Dr. Docksey available to make house calls.
He is survived by his children, J. Ross (and Chris) Docksey of Long Grove, IL; Susan (and Don) Gunnin of Breckenridge, CO; Anne (and Jay) Newell of Roundup, MT; Laura (and Tom) Downey of Anchorage, AK; Tom and (and Karen) Docksey of Owatonna, MN; Jim (and Jan) Docksey of Chippewa Falls, WI; Sara (and Paul) Mullaney of Chanhassen, MN; and Andrew (and Cyndi) Docksey of Milwaukee, WI.
