Allen Hertzberg Obituary

Allen A. “Smiley”  Hertzberg, 80 of Paynesville, died Saturday, October 12, 2019 at his home near Paynesville after a battle with cancer.  Funeral services will be 2:00 p.m. Saturday, October 19, 2019 at Crystal Hill Assembly of God in Paynesville.  Visitation will be from 4-7 p.m. Friday at the Johnson Funeral Home in Paynesville and for one hour prior to the service at church.  Burial will be in the Zion Cemetery near Paynesville.                   

Allen Arthur Hertzberg was born on November 21, 1938, in Paynesville, the son of Arnie and Evelyn (Schultz) Hertzberg.  He grew up east of Paynesville where he attended country grade school in District #43 and Paynesville High School, graduating in 1956.  While still in high school he entered the U.S. Navy reserves that later became active duty, serving until his discharge in 1961.  On August 23, 1958, Smiley was united in marriage to Eileen Miller at Salem Evangelical United Brethren Church.   They made their home in Maryland, and Paynesville before moving to California where they lived until 1969, when they returned home to take over the family farm. Smiley also started Al’s Two Way Radio and Eastside Shoppe and did road construction and was a member of the Local 49 for 34 years.  He retired in 2004 and they made their home near Rice Lake.  

Smiley was a faithful member of Crystal Hills Assembly.  He was active in 4-H Club as a youth and as a parent leader.  He enjoyed helping others, storm watching for the civil defense in the area, operating his ham radio and flying remote planes. 

Smiley is survived by his wife, Eileen of 61 years; children, Randy (Cindy) Hertzberg of Paynesville, Rhonda (Stan) Torgersen of Cold Springs, Raeleen Hertzberg of Paynesville, Kellie (Mike) Saia of California and David (Linda) Barthel of Colorado; seven grandchildren, Jacquelyn, Jacob, Jennifer and Junior Hertzberg, Deanne Denn, Kara Barthel and Levi Barthel; sisters, Joyce Wonsmos and Geri Spanier and numerous nieces and nephews.  He was preceded in death by his parents; sister, Shirley; and brothers-in-law, Gene Wonsmos and David Spanier.
