Dorothy A. Swart, 91 of Spicer, died Saturday, July 6, 2019 at Bethesda Care Center in Willmar. Funeral services will be 10:30 a.m. Thursday, July 11, 2019 at Faith Lutheran Church in Spicer. Visitation will be from 5-7 pm. Wednesday at the Johnson Funeral Home in New London and for one hour prior to the services at church. Burial will be in the Spicer City Cemetery.
Dorothy Alvina Swart was born April 8, 1928, in Franklin, to Alfred and Martha (Zielsdorf) Hogstad. She grew up in Franklin where she went to school in the Franklin and Sleepy Eye area. In Franklin, her parents owned a filling station. In the 1940’s the family moved to Spicer where they farmed at Dorothy and Jim’s present location.
On December 3, 1945, Dorothy was united in marriage to Anton “Tony” Swart. They made their home in Spicer where they raised five children. During their retirement years, they enjoyed trips to Benson, Arizona. Tony died on January of 1988 after 42 years of marriage. In her later years, she and good friend, Fred Everson Sr., shared time together.
Dorothy was an excellent homemaker, wife and mother. She enjoyed crocheting and spending time with family. Dorothy worked as cook and waitress at local restaurants and was also a clerk at Holm Brothers Hardware in New London and was a senior companion in Spicer.
Dorothy died Saturday, July 6, 2019, at Bethesda Grand in Willmar, at the age of 91. She is survived by her children: James Swart of Spicer, Don (JoLynn) Swart of Spicer, Linda (Jake) Klein of St. Paul and Debra (Jeff) Lorensen of Willmar; 18 grandchildren; 34 great-grandchildren and 1 great-grandson.
Dorothy was preceded in death by her husband, Tony; parents, Alfred and Martha Hogstad; daughter, Dianne Alvina Schutz; two grandchildren, Daryl Swart and Angela Swart; and two great-grandchildren, Tyson Anton Swart and Tyler Scott Lorensen.
