Elsie Sammons Obituary

Elsie L. Sammons, 90, of Willmar, died Wednesday, October 16th at Carris Health Rice Memorial Hospital in Willmar.  Her memorial service will be 2:00 pm, Saturday, October 19th at Willmar United Methodist Church.  Visitation will be one hour prior to the service at the church. Burial will be in Clover Leaf Cemetery in Willmar.  Arrangements are with Harvey Anderson Funeral Home.  www.hafh.org

Elsie Louise Sammons was born on January 19, 1929, in Spring Prairie Township, Clay County, Minnesota, to Albert and Pearl (Phiffer) Tucker.  She grew up in Osakis, where she attended school. On October 23, 1949, she was united in marriage to Eugene Sammons in Alexandria.  The couple moved to Willmar and were blessed with five children.  In addition to being a homemaker, Elsie worked in restaurants, and also at Wardrobe Cleaners, Woolworths, J.C. Penney’s and Herberger’s.   Elsie later worked in housekeeping at Rice Memorial Hospital in Willmar for 28 years prior to her retirement. 

Elsie was baptized and confirmed in the Christian Faith.  She was a member of the Willmar United Methodist Church where she was active in baking and helping on the funeral committee. 

In her younger years, Elsie was active in a softball league and bowling league.  She enjoyed crocheting, and visiting with friends and family.  She also collected ceramic dolls, chickens and roosters.  She and Gene enjoyed dancing and were members of a Polka club.

Gene passed away 32 years ago to the day of Elsie’s death, but 4 minutes later, on October 16, 1987.

Elsie died Wednesday, October 16th at Carris Health Rice Memorial Hospital in Willmar.  She is survived by her five children: Gary (and Lanet) Sammons of Spicer, Doug (and Lenda) Sammons of Willmar, Deborah Reed of Willmar, Deanna (and Thomas) Schueller of Willmar, Cathy Jo (and Mitchell) Ellingson of Willmar; 13 grandchildren, 14 great-grandchildren; sisters: Hazel Kelley and Darlene Hendricks; and several nieces, nephews and other relatives.

In addition to her husband, Gene, she was proceeded in death by her son-in-law, Steven Reed; four brothers, Woodrow and Bill Chapman, Ralph Tucker and Alfred Tucker; sisters, Edith Tucker, Jean Moe , Jessie Engstrand, Faye Coughlin and Betty Robbens.
