Murlin D. Olson, 98, of Paynesville, died Saturday, December 28, 2019, at Koronis Manor in Paynesville. His memorial service will be 11:00 am Friday, January 10, 2020, at Nordland Lutheran Church in rural Paynesville. Burial will be in the church cemetery. A visitation will be held for one hour prior to the service at the church. Services are entrusted to Johnson Funeral Home in Paynesville.
Murlin Duane Olson was born in his grandfather’s log cabin on November 3, 1921, the firstborn to Deodor and Jennie Olson. He was baptized and confirmed in Nordland Lutheran Church and attended school at District 19 Country School.
On August 1, 1942, he was inducted into the navy and trained as a diesel mechanic. He served on an LST and was sent to the South Pacific. In June of 1944, he returned home on a medical discharge and began to farm.
On June 1, 1946, he married Edna Borgstrom. This union was blessed with three children. The family made their home in rural Paynesville where Murlin was a farmer and a carpenter, building nearly 40 houses in the community.
Murlin remained a lifelong member of Nordland where he served as a deacon, sang in the choir, and enjoyed fellowship with The Couples Club. He also served on the Union Grove Township Board. He enjoyed hunting and fishing, traveling with Edna, planting a garden, being with his grandchildren, making lefsa, and spending time with friends. He had a great sense of humor and he was a great listener.
Murlin is survived by his children: Douglas Olson (Martha) of Punta Gorda, FL, Colleen Vinkemeier of Annandale, MN, and Patty Crawford of Minneapolis; five grandchildren: Lori Anders (Eric) of Walnut Creek, CA, Lisa Olson of Plano, TX, and Mark Olson of Colorado Springs, CO, Jeff Vinkemeier (Christina) of Norwood Young America, MN, and Amy Halquist (David) of Henderson, MN; and numerous great and great-great-grandchildren. Murlin also leaves two sisters: Darleen Glenz and Glenice Schaumann (Jonathan) of Paynesville, MN.
He is preceded in death by his wife, Edna; sister, Pearl Hendrickson; brother, Norman Olson; son-in-law, Gary Vinkemeier; and countless friends and relatives.
