Calvin was born August 11, 1950, in Graceville, Minnesota, the son of Walter and Grace (Sundt) Carls. He moved with his family to a farm northwest of Pennock in 1955 and attended school in Kerkhoven, graduating from Kerkhoven High School in 1968. He then attended the Willmar Vo-Tech for diesel mechanics.
On January 16, 1971, Calvin married Arlene Manthey at Kerkhoven Lutheran Church. They moved to the Carls family farm, where they have lived, farmed, and raised their daughters since 1973.
Calvin had a passion for farming from a young age. He took pride in managing his own farm business including a dairy herd, milk route, seed sales, and custom combining and baling. His hobbies aligned with his farming passions – welding, carpentry, mechanics, and designing/building farm equipment. To family and friends, he will be remembered as a steward of the land, a logical and rational sounding board, and guide.
Calvin is survived by his loving wife: Arlene Carls; two daughters: Becky (Troy) Spanier and Katie Carls (Tim Kiser); two granddaughters: Brook Hoffman (Noel Jones) and Kayla Hoffman; his mother: Grace Yates; his sister: Juanita (Donavon “Sooky”) Halverson; and his nieces. He was preceded in death by his father: Walter Carls; a brother: Ellery Carls; and infant daughter: Angela Carls; and his in-laws: Ernest and Nettie Manthey.
