Chad A. Nelson

Chad A. Nelson, 50, of Brooten, died Sunday, May 9, 2021, at Rice Memorial Hospital in Willmar.  Memorial services will be 1:00 pm. Friday, May 14, 2021 at Big Grove Lutheran near Belgrade.  Visitation will be from 5-8 pm. Thursday at the church and for one hour prior to the service.  Burial will be in the church cemetery.  Arrangements are with the Johnson Funeral Home in Belgrade.  www.hafh.org

Chad Aaron Nelson was born on November 20, 1970 in Willmar, the son of Ronald and Diane (Lehner) Nelson.  He grew up in Spicer and attended New London-Spicer High School, graduating in 1989.  On September 18, 1993, Chad was united in marriage to his high school sweetheart, Kathleen Downey.  They made their home in rural Brooten and he worked at Nelson Marine in Spicer.  He purchased the business in 2001 with Nathan Nielsen, now known as Spicer Sports and Marine. 

Chad was a member of Big Grove Lutheran Church. He was an active cub scout leader when his boys were young and spent many weekends with his sons at different scouting events.   He enjoyed vintage John Deere tractors, tractor pulls with his son, Brady and his father, and having yearly deer camp at their home with sister, Melissa and brother-in-law, Brad.  He loved living on their little hobby farm with the river running through it.

Chad  is survived by his wife, Kathy of 27 years; sons, Aaron Nelson, Tristan Nelson and Brady Nelson (Kiara Quade); granddaughter, Eliana Nelson; parents, Ronald and Diane Nelson; sister, Melissa (Brad) Johnson and mother-in-law, Beverly Downey.  He was preceded in death by his grandparents, Ralph and Edna Nelson and Peter and Dorothy Lehner.
