Charlotte Johnson Obituary

Charlotte C.G. Johnson, 91, of Willmar, formerly of Kerkhoven, died Tuesday, March 5, 2024, at CentraCare Rice Memorial Hospital in Willmar.

Her memorial service will be 10:30 a.m. Saturday, March 9, at Harvey Anderson Funeral Home in Willmar with visitation one hour prior to the service.  Interment will be at Hillside Cemetery in Kerkhoven.  Memorials are preferred to the Kerkhoven American Legion Auxiliary.

Charlotte was born on March 22, 1932, in Willmar, MN, to parents August and Minnie (Anderson) Youngren. She graduated from Kerkhoven-Sunburg High School in 1950, before receiving a certificate at Minneapolis Business College. While she pursued many endeavors including bookkeeping at the service station, clerking at auctions, and selling real estate, her career focus was banking. She started out at the State Bank of Kerkhoven, reaching a Vice President role before moving to the State Bank of Willmar.

Charlotte married the love of her life, Curtis Johnson, on October 10, 1953. He was her partner in life before his passing in 1999. They shared a passion for horseback riding, which continued to be a defining aspect of Charlotte’s life. She found solace and joy in the saddle, forging deep bonds with her trail-riding friends and her horses. As a member of the Minnesota Trail Riders Association, K&M Saddle Club, and the South Dakota Trail Riders, Charlotte found a community of like-minded individuals who shared her love for horses and the great outdoors. She rode horseback up to six days a week, leaving other riders to recall how frequently they would run into her on trail rides. She embarked on countless adventures riding across the U.S. However, it was Apache Junction, AZ, where she began wintering with Curtis after retirement, which held a special place in her heart. She returned every winter to ride horseback in and around Superstition Mountain until the remarkable age of 85.

Some things her family will remember fondly are her disposable cameras, her horse figurines, and her deviled eggs. Charlotte never forgot to send a birthday card; Leanin’ Tree card company was a contact in her phone. Many special days were spent with family at her place on Games Lake. Charlotte attended the Kerkhoven Evangelical Free Church until moving to Willmar, where she attended services at Bethesda or the summer services at Games Lake County Park.

Charlotte is survived by her brother, Vernon; children Reid (Joe) Johnson, Sandy (Dave) Baker, and Wayde (Melissa) Johnson. She is also survived by her eight grandchildren and five great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents, her loving husband Curtis, her brother Donald and his wife Dolores, her brother Wendell and his wife Jeanette, her sister Vivian and her husband Roy, sister-in-law Joyce, and nephew Randy Carlson.

Charlotte Johnson will be remembered for her unwavering determination, her adventurous spirit, and her fondness to the people and activities she loved. Though she may no longer be with us in person, Charlotte reminded us to embrace life's adventures.
