Dale was born June 18, 1930, the third son of Fred and Laura Henkelman. He graduated from Odessa High School, where he played and later coached basketball. He was a Korean War veteran and was working for the railroad as a telegrapher when he met his wife, Joyce Gasper. They were married on January 21, 1957, and lived in Huron, SD and Johnson, MN before moving to Willmar, MN, where Dale became the owner/operator of Wardrobe Cleaners. He was an avid golfer and bowler, and he enjoyed hunting pheasants on family farms near Correll, MN. He was a big fan of both the Twins and the Vikings. He was an active member at St. Mary's Church in Willmar, where he was involved in the Knights of Columbus and served as an usher during services. He was also involved in the Boy Scouts and was a big part of the Boy Scouts sponsored rolls and coffee after church on Sundays.

Dale was preceded in death by his parents; his brothers, Alvin and Vernon Henkelman; his sister-in-law, Phyllis; his aunt and uncle, William and Anna Henkelman; cousins, Harold Henkelman and Carol Henkelman; and by two great-nephews, Curtis Olson and Shawn Henkelman.

He is survived by his wife, Joyce; his children, Mike (and Deb) Henkelman, Laurie (and Todd) Sagedahl, Robert (and Pamela) Henkelman and Tim Henkelman (and partner Sherry Larson); his grandchildren, Tyler (and Taylor) Henkelman, Mark (and Mallory) Sagedahl, Sara (and Matt) Frakes, Keenan (and Michelle) Henkelman, Moriah Henkelman, Caleb (and Ashia) Henkelman, Rebekah (and Ryan) Leathers and Keziah (and Forrest) Estrem; and his great-grandchildren, Lita Henkelman, Kylee and Reese Sagedahl, Bode Frakes, Theodore and Augustus Henkelman, Arthur Leathers, and Wren Estrem; his sister-in-law, Irene Henkelman; his cousin, Donald (and Kathy) Henkelman; and his nieces and nephews, June, Bonnie, Kitt, Alvin, Arlyn, Renae, Lynn and Karen and their spouses, children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
