Daryl was born in Willmar, Minnesota on February 8, 1949. He was the fourth son of Dick F. and Berndina (Dykema) Marcus. Daryl grew up on the farm near Prinsburg and was raised in the Christian Reformed Church, professing his faith at age 16. He served many terms as elder in the church and touched a lot of lives with this ministry.
Daryl graduated from Central Minnesota Christian in 1967, and continued to Calvin College where he had a double major in biology and chemistry. While at Calvin, Daryl cemented his relationship with his long-time sweetheart, Bev Post of Chicago, IL after she insisted they “might as well get married” to save some money. On June 26, 1970, they were united in marriage in Chicago and recently celebrated 50 years together. Their union welcomed one son, Nicholas Jay, in 1981.
Following college, Daryl went on to the University of Minnesota: School of Dentistry while Bev supported them as a nurse. After graduation he was awarded a general practice residency in the US Public Health Service in Norfolk, Virginia. This was followed by 2 years on the Oregon coast where he served as a Coast Guard dentist for OR and WA, reaching the rank of Lieutenant Commander.
In 1978, the couple moved back to Willmar where Daryl opened a new dental practice - Kandi Dental. It was a leap of faith as Daryl, with Bev working as his assistant, waited for the first patient to walk through the door. Daryl loved his patients and always tried to treat them with kindness and integrity. Daryl devoted 33 years of private practice in dentistry in the Willmar community. When he retired in 2011, he sold his practice to his son and regarded this decision as one of the best moments of his life.
Daryl’s life was made complete when he gained a daughter-in-law, Jonikka, and 3 beautiful granddaughters – Eliana, Victoria, and Malin. What a joy they have been. Papa loved his girls deeply, as well as his grandpuppy, Kirby. In years past, Daryl enjoyed fishing and hunting. He had lots of good times with his buddies which included many wonderful trips to the Boundary Waters. Daryl also loved his Golden Gophers – especially volleyball. Daryl and Bev also got to travel extensively all over the world and made some great memories.
Daryl is lovingly remembered by his wife Bev, his son Nick (Jonikka) Marcus and his granddaughters – Eliana, Victoria, and Malin of Willmar. Also his brothers, Ron Marcus of Phoenix, AZ; Wally (Rachel) Marcus of Tempe, AZ; Chuck (Cheryl) Marcus of Mokena, IL; and his dear sister Karen (Paul) Capiz of Minneapolis, MN; his mother-in-law Margaret Euwema; in-laws Bernice Boeringa and Neil (Carol) Post; and many nieces, nephews, and close family. Daryl was preceded in death by his parents, sister-in-law Fay Marcus, brother-in-law Sam Hamstra, and brother-in-law and sister-in-law Harold (Betty) Post.
