Donald Burgett passed away at Carris Rice Hospital on Monday, March 16, 2020, after a brief illness.
Due to the uncertainty of Covid-19, there will not be a public memorial service for Donald Burgett. Instead the family will have a private celebration of his life in the fall. The family wishes to thank all the wonderful people who have prayed for them in their loss, sent cards, gifts, food, and many other demonstrations of love and kindness.
Donald Burgett was born January 5, 1946, in Fergus Falls, MN. He was the son of Donald H. and Dorothy (Erickson) Burgett. He grew up in Rothsay and Detroit Lakes, MN, graduating from Detroit Lakes High School in 1964. Don married his grade school sweetheart, Lynn (Lucas), in 1967. He graduated from the University of Minnesota School of Law in 1971. After working in a law firm in St. Paul, Don and his family moved to Willmar in 1972. He joined the firm of Lundquist & Anderson which later became Lundquist, Anderson, & Burgett. Don was blessed to have his son, Michael, work with him for 15 years. Don retired in 2017.
In 1974, the family moved to Spicer where Don fully enjoyed being a country man. He raised Appaloosa horses, tried his hand at raising cattle, and shared his love for the outdoors with his children. Don was an avid hunter who could outwalk anybody in the pursuit of a pheasant. The deer hunting land near Bemidji was a dream come true for him, providing the family with many adventures. He enjoyed fishing in Canada with the guys, captaining the boat for water sports and teaching kids to water ski. Sleigh rides on the frozen lake, cross country skiing, roller skating through Spicer, and four-wheeling were some of the experiences he orchestrated for his family.
Don’s faith, love of his family, and service to others were at the core of his being. He served on the Youth for Christ Board, the Lake Region Bank Board, Hope Pregnancy Board, was a dedicated Township Supervisor, and was active at Living Hope Church (Evangelical Free), in many areas as well as serving as an elder.
As Don’s Parkinsons disease progressed he had to adapt and could no longer enjoy many of his favorite pursuits. However, fellowship at Open Door Church, Car Club with Art, lunch with Chuck, Bob, Doug, and Pete were special to him. Time with family and close friends was invaluable.
Surviving are Lynn, his wife of 53 years; children: Dr.Wendy Burgett Richards of St. Paul, Sarah Owens (Chad, amazing son-in-law and buddy) of Spicer, Michael (Sara) of Waco, Texas, Paige Burgett, Spicer; grandchildren: Ben (Hannah), Eli, Sam, Abe, Annabelle, Martika, Jackson; sister, Judy Thorson and other dear family members and friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents, his son, Mark, his sister, Susan Jorgensen, his father and mother-in-law, Gordon and Eleanor Lucas.
