Donald C. Urban, 97, of Willmar, died Thursday, December 12, 2024, at Bethesda Grand in Willmar.
His funeral service will be 11:00 a.m. Monday, December 16, at Harvey Anderson Funeral Home in Willmar with visitation one hour prior to the service. Interment with military honors will be at Fairview Cemetery in Raymond.
Donald was born on September 19, 1927, in Henry, South Dakota, to Conrad and Alma Urban. He was baptized in South Dakota and confirmed in Minnesota through the Lutheran Church. After graduating from Raymond High School, Donald proudly served in the U.S. Army from 1951 to 1953, where he was honorably discharged.
On January 30, 1954, Donald married the love of his life, Albertha “Birdie” Onnen. Together, they raised their children on the family farm, where Donald took pride in managing all aspects of farm life. He farmed until 1988 and continued working for another local farmer, Jerry Erickson, driving truck for him for nearly 30 years after his retirement.
Donald was a skilled woodworker and enjoyed making toys for his grandchildren, along with creating whimsical pieces, such as his famous “two-story outhouse.” He also built many cabinets over the years, showcasing his craftsmanship and creativity.
Donald and Birdie enjoyed traveling together, exploring destinations such as Florida, Arizona, and Europe. Donald was a dedicated member of his church communities, first at Trinity Lutheran Church, where he served as treasurer for 30 years and as an usher, and later at Redeemer Lutheran Church. He was also an active member of the VFW Post 1639 in Willmar and the American Legion Post 420 in Raymond.
Donald is survived by his wife, Albertha “Birdie” of Willmar; children, Larry (Jean) Urban of New London, Gloria (Tom) Rieschl of Georgetown, TX, Doug (Lynn) Urban of New London; son-in-law, Rick Hatanpaa of Moose Lake; 11 grandchildren; and 21 great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents; daughter, Kathy Hatanpaa; and brothers, Emil and Lorvin Urban.
