Dorothy L. Schmit, 86, of Belgrade, formerly of Benson, died Saturday, November 14, 2020, at the Belgrade Nursing Home. Mass of Christian Burial will be 10:00 a.m. Monday, November 23, 2020 at St. Francis de Sales Catholic Church in Belgrade. Visitation will be one hour prior to the service at church. Burial will be in the Catholic Cemetery in Shakopee. Arrangements are with the Johnson Funeral Home in Belgrade.
Dorothy Louise Schmit was born on February 5, 1934, in Oaks, North Dakota, the daughter of Stephen and Rose (Deutsch) Bauer. She attended country grade school in Harlem, ND. On April 14, 1956, Dorothy was united in marriage to Cyril Schmit in Mason City, Iowa. They made their home in St. Paul before moving to Benson in 1974 where they farmed and later worked at the Benson Hospital in housekeeping, retiring in 1993. Dorothy and Cyril were able to share in 36 years of marriage before his death on April 10, 1993. Dorothy later moved to Sartel and the Belgrade Nursing Home.
Dorothy enjoyed cooking, knitting, crocheting and spending time with her family, especially her grandchildren.
Dorothy died on Saturday, November 14, 2020 at the Belgrade Nursing Home at the age of 86. She is survived by her children, Stephen Schmit (fiancé, Betty Johnson) of Brooten and Debbie Affeldt of Clear Lake; daughter-in-law, Kimberly Schmit; grandchildren, Renee, Jessica, Tony, Jake and Kyle; great-grandchildren, Amelia, Carly, Jacelyn and Axton and siblings, Anna Mae Loegering and Stephen (Arlene) Bauer. She was preceded in death by her husband, Cyril; son, Gregory Schmit; grandson, Joshua Schmit; parents; and siblings, Leonard, Katherine, Edmund, Matthew, Susan, Angaline, Marie, Theodore, Evelyn and Elizabeth.
