Elva Goldie Orton was born on June 1, 1931, to Roy and Erna (Kirckof) Orton in Brooten. She was baptized and confirmed in the Lutheran faith and attended school in Brooten.

On October 3, 1949, Elva married Richard Laage at the church parsonage in Villard, Minnesota. Together, they were blessed with two children, Linda and Paul. They made their home on the family farm north of Brooten until 1962. Richard’s career took them to Sauk Rapids, Paynesville, and Monticello. In 1985, Richard retired, and the couple built a home in Brooten.

Following Richard's retirement, Elva worked as a kitchen aide for the BBE school system for 10 years. She was an active member of Trinity Lutheran Church, where she served in WELCA, Women's Circle, and the Altar Guild. Elva also contributed to the library committee and was a member of the American Legion Auxiliary of Brooten. In her leisure time, she enjoyed trips to the casino, tending to her rose garden, and, most importantly, spending time with her family. Her love of cooking over the years was appreciated by all her friends, family, and anyone that came through her door. Her times with her coffee clutch and her “ladies” was also very special to her. She deeply loved her family, her church, and her community.

Elva is survived by her children: Linda (Brad) Olson and Paul Laage; four grandchildren: Natasha (John), Jeremiah (Tara), Travis, and Taylor (Shelby); and seven great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Richard; her parents; her brother, Harold Orton.

Elva will be remembered as a faithful friend, wife, and mother.
