Esther Bluhm, 87, of Cosmos, died Monday, July 14th at Bethesda Grand in Willmar. Her funeral service will be 11:00 am, Tuesday, July 22nd at Peace Lutheran Church in Cosmos. Visitation will be 5-7:00 pm, Monday, July 21st at the church and continue one hour prior to her service. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Esther M. Bluhm was born November 30, 1937, in Brookfield Township, Renville County to Alfred J. and Lilly F. (Klapel) Wiehr. She graduated from Buffalo Lake High School in 1955. Esther continued her education at Mankato State Teachers College where she graduated in 1959. On August 31, 1957, Esther was united in marriage to Donavon Harold Bluhm in Mankato.
They made their home in Lake Crystal for a few years, where Esther taught for a short time. They moved to Cosmos in 1963 where they made their home. Esther began teaching full time at Cosmos Consolidated School as a 3rd grade teacher. She taught 3rd grade for many years before getting her Special Education License. She retired in 1993, after 30 years of teaching.
She was a member of Peace Lutheran Church in Cosmos where she directed the Spirit of Peace for many years. She also directed the plays for the Cosmos Community Theatre for 19 years.
Esther loved music, especially playing the piano, playing Bridge with the ladies from Cosmos, spending time with family, especially her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She also enjoyed traveling with family and friends, and took bus tours all over the U.S.
Esther is survived by her daughter, Diane (Calvin) McClain of Lake Lillian; son-in-law, Steven Whitcomb of Lake Lillian; grandchildren: Kyle Whitcomb (Samantha Oberfoell-Lally) and children: Evolet and Wilder of Lake Lillian, Kelsey Whitcomb (Dylan Zaeska) and their children: Hunter, Gauge, Bo, Barrett, OakleyJo, and Cooper of Lake Lillian, Travis (Breanna) Whitcomb and their children: Theodore, Quinten and Emmalynn of Cosmos, Tracey (Preston) Rogers and their children: Ayden, Carter and Rohan of Atwater, Matthew (Abbey) Whitcomb and their children: Max, Noah, and Dean of Lake Lillian, Jacob Whitcomb, Meghan McClain both of Lake Lillian. Also surviving are her sister: Fern Corley of Pleasanton, CA; sisters-in-law: Colette Wiehr of Hutchinson, and Mary Ann Carrigan of Buffalo Lake; as well as many nieces, nephews, and other family and friends.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Donavon; daughter, Susan Whitcomb; grandson, Zachariah Whitcomb; parents; parents-in-law, Harold and Etta (Voeltz) Bluhm; brothers: Harold and Alfred Wiehr; brother-in-law, John Corley; and sisters-in-law, Deborah Daak and Fern (Kaven) Wiehr.
