Garry W. Hanson, 73, of Brooten, died Sunday, November 8, 2020 at the St. Cloud Hospital. A public visitation will be from 5-7 p.m. Thursday, November 12, 2020 at the Johnson Funeral Home in Belgrade. A private funeral will be at Crow River Lutheran Church near Belgrade followed by a public committal with military honors at 11:45 a.m. Friday at the church cemetery.
Garry William Hanson was born on November 29, 1946, in Willmar, the son of William and Edith (Hookom) Hanson. He lived in Arizona until the age of 8, when his father died and they moved to Brooten. He attended Brooten High School, graduating in 1964. On May 24, 1966, he entered the U.S. Navy where he served his country during the Vietnam War. He was honorably discharged on March 28, 1969. On May 7, 1966, Garry was united in marriage to Clarys Speldrick. They were blessed with two daughters and later divorced. He made his home in the St. Paul area where he worked as a welder and later a designer and engineer for a heating and air conditioning company. In 1976, he met his partner, Georgia Martinson. They moved to Brooten in 1988, where he began his fireworks company, Precocious Pyrotechnics.
Garry was a member of Crow River Lutheran Church. He enjoyed hunting, traveling and tinkering in his machine shop.
Garry is survived by his partner, Georgia Martinson; daughters, Dawn (David) Kraushaar and Shawnette Morrison; Georgia’s children, Shelly VanDyke and Gary Martinson; seven grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren and brother, Glenn (Vicki) Otteson. He was preceded in death by his parents and step-father, Olaf Otteson.
