Helen Peterson Obituary

Helen Lucile Peterson, 83, of New London, passed away Friday, May 1 at St. Cloud Hospital following a short illness. A private graveside service will take place at Lebanon Cemetery in New London. Arrangements are with Harvey Anderson & Johnson Funeral Home in New London.

Helen Peterson was born on April 11, 1943, in New London to Archie and Elsie Walquist. She graduated from New London High School and remained closely connected to the community throughout her life.

She was united in marriage to Norman Elroy Peterson on August 2, 1970, in Spicer. Together, they built a life centered in New London, where they owned and operated the Big Store IGA for many years. Through her work, Helen became a familiar and trusted presence to generations in the community.

She had a knack for knowing what was going on around town and took joy in staying connected to others. Helen loved playing bingo and trying her luck at the slot machines, and she carried that same hopeful spirit into everyday life. Her faith was an important part of who she was, and she was an active member of Peace Lutheran Church in New London.

Helen is survived by her sisters, Alice (Robert) DeGrote of Raymond and Judith Braeger of Leonard, North Dakota; and her sister-in-law, Ruth (Ken) Gjerde of New London, along with extended family and many friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Norman; her sister, Dorothy (Byron) Klemmetson; her brothers, Leonard (Gwen) Walquist and Robert (Norma) Walquist; her brother-in-law, Russell (Elaine) Peterson; and her brother-in-law, Jim Braeger.

In keeping with Helen’s wishes, a private burial will take place for immediate family, as she often said she did not want to “make a fuss.”
