Ilo J. Palmquist, 94, of New London died Wednesday, June 1, 2022, at the St. Cloud Hospital in St. Cloud.  A memorial service will be held on Monday, June 6, 2022, at 1:00 pm at Peace Lutheran Church in New London.  Burial will be at a later date.  A visitation will be held for two hours prior to the service at the church.  Services are entrusted to Johnson Funeral Home in New London.

Ilo Jane Gravley was born on July 29, 1927, to Julius and Ida Gravley.  She was baptized and confirmed at Crow River Church, Belgrade MN.  Ilo was raised on her family farm with her siblings Kenneth, Bud, Gordon, Dorothy, Adeline, Roger, and Gloria.  Ilo attended New London School Districts 8 & 19 and “Old Grey”.

On February 13, 1949, Ilo was united in marriage with Merle Everett Palmquist where together they had four children: Kandice, Reed, Ricky, and Lyle.  Ilo worked at the Nash Finch Grocery, Boston Café, and Holm Brothers before starting the “popcorn stand” in New London where she became the “mother” to many children.  In 1968, Merle and Ilo opened the Walnut Chalet which she owned and operated for 30 years.  There she became “grandma” to her customers young and old.  She was known for her homemade rolls, pies, and yearly Lutefisk suppers.  She retired in 1998, but did not like retirement and so she went to work at the Big Store in New London where she continued to laugh and joke with people of the community.   She loved being around people and talking about her “winnings” at the casino and “she never lost and was always a winner."   She and Merle loved to travel, taking yearly road trips around the United States.  Ilo served on the Little Crow Nesters DU Committee for many years, bowling was also a great passion of hers.  Grandma Ilo was always ready with a hug, smile, joke, and a listening ear; and her coffee pot was always on!

Ilo is survived by her children: Kandice (Michael) Halvorson, Reed Palmquist, Ricky (Carol) Palmquist, and Lyle (Nancy) Palmquist.  She loved her grandchildren dearly: Marsai, Nathan, Mathew, and Joshua Halvorson; Connie Dornbusch & Brian Palmquist; Hope & Darrin Palmquist; and Shanna & Shad Palmquist.  Ilo had 17 great-grandchildren and 8 great-great-grandchildren.  Ilo is also survived by her siblings: Bud, Gordon, and Roger Gravley, Adeline Lohn, and Gloria Woodward.  She is proceded in death by her husband Merle; her parents Julius & Ida Gravley; her brother Kenny; sister Dorothy; brothers-in-law Sid Lohn & Bruce Woodward; sisters-in-law Maxine, Dorcas, Barb & Karemae Gravley; and brother & sister-in-law Dick and Ruth Palmquist.  Ilo was loved by many nieces, nephews, and dear friends.

God Bless you Momma, you will be dearly missed!
