Janice L. (Ouren) Flesland

Janice L. “Jan” Flesland, age 82 of Estilline, SD (formally of New London), passed away Sunday January 19th, 2020. A private memorial service will be held in February.  Interment will be at a later date at Oak Hill Cemetery in New London, MN.

Jan was born on February 6th, 1937 in Glenwood, Minnesota to Russell and Viola (Johnson) Ouren. She had three siblings: Dallas, Marilyn, and Omie. Jan Graduated from Glenwood High School in 1955.  She had many fond memories of the Glenwood Ski Jump, Lake Minnewaska, Lakeside Ballroom and Waterama. She went on to pursue a Master’s Degree in Teaching at St. Cloud University.  She then met her husband, Phil Flesland and was married June 6th, 1959.  Jan faithfully followed Phillip to his various deployment locations. Jan taught 2 years on base when her husband was deployed in Seattle, Washington. They moved back to Minnesota in late 1950’s to Farm. Jan taught 1st Grade in Paynesville and 2nd Grade in New London for a total of 36 years. 

She was involved in teaching summer bible school, 4-H, and organized a card club within her neighborhood that met for over 25 years.  Jan also enjoyed gardening, sewing, fishing, boating, snowmobiling, cross country skiing, ice fishing, and her love for reading led to many collections of books.  

Jan and Phil loved to travel. They visited many places including Alaska and Norway. They also enjoyed numerous Rustad Bus trips. They also cherished the many trips they took their grandchildren on.  

Jan recently moved to Estilline Nursing Care Center (ENCC) in SD.  The family would like to thank all that cared for her at ENCC. The staff and residents were extremely kind and considerate. We can’t complement the staff enough for the level of care Jan received.  She enjoyed being part of the ENCC family and thoroughly loved partaking in the numerous activities provided at the care center. She was particularly fond of the music program, as she loved to play the flute & piccolo in her younger years.  Her sister, Marilyn Erickson, also moved to the Estilline Nursing Care Center, and she was elated to spend time with her.

Jan is survived by her children: Nancy (Brad Arneson), Michael; grandchildren: Hana, Caleb; brother, Dallas, and many family and friends.

She was preceded in death by her husband of 54 years, Phil, and sisters, Marilyn Erickson and Omie.
