Joel Alan Slagter

Joel Slagter, 73, of Blomkest, died Thursday, October 10, 2024, at his home.  A visitation for Joel will be 2:00-4:00 p.m. Saturday, October 19, at Roseland Reformed Church.  Arrangements are with Harvey Anderson Funeral Home in Willmar. www.hafh.org 

Joel Alan Slagter was born August 7, 1951, in Willmar, Minnesota, the son of Gerald and Ethel (Hoekstra) Slagter.  He grew up near Roseland, attended elementary school in Roseland, and graduated from Danube High School in 1969.  On July 3, 1971, he married Trudy Damhof in South Dakota, and together they welcomed three children: Adam, Alissa, and Ian.

For nearly 50 years, Joel owned and operated Blomkest Oil Company.  He was a member of the Blomkest Lions Club and Roseland Reformed Church, serving as a deacon and singing in the church choir. Joel enjoyed attending his children’s and grandchildren’s sporting events, and antique shows and classic car exhibitions, particularly his annual trip to the Barrett-Jackson Show in Arizona.  He also enjoyed spending time with friends and helping them with field work and other projects.

Joel is survived by his three children: Adam (Stephanie) Slagter of Blomkest, Alissa Slagter (Tom Johnson) of Cottage Grove, and Ian (Hayley) Slagter of Blomkest; six grandchildren: Noah Slagter (fiancée, Erica Schramm), Callie Slagter, Adalyn Schoen, Wyatt Schoen, Ali Slagter and Jace Slagter; his mother: Ethel Slagter; his significant other: Lisa Mead of Atwater; and Lisa’s daughter: Shayla (Nolan) VanDenEinde.  Also surviving are four brothers: Dean (Pat) Slagter of Danube, Jerry (Dawn) Slagter of Blomkest, Terry (Darla) Slagter of Blomkest and Dale Slagter (Sue Johnson) of Svea; a sister: Jill (Bill) Albin of Chandler, AZ; and several nieces and nephews.  He was preceded in death by his father: Gerald Slagter; and a brother: Tom Slagter.
