Leona M Schwinghammer

Leona M. Schwinghammer, 104 of Belgrade, died on Monday, August 17, 2026 at the Belgrade Nursing Home. Mass of Christian Burial will be 11:00 a.m. Friday, August 21, 2026 at St. Francis de Sales Catholic Church in Belgrade followed by burial in the church cemetery.   Visitation will be Thursday from 6:00 to 8:00 pm. at the Johnson Funeral Home in Belgrade. Visitation will continue on Friday for one hour prior to the service at church with a Christian Women’s Rosary at 9:30 a.m.                                            

Leona Madeline Schwinghammer was born on May 19, 1922 in St. Cloud the daughter of Louis and Rose (Weber) Hiemenz.  On April 24, 1941, Leona was united in marriage to Walter Schwinghammer at St. Anthony Catholic Church in St. Cloud.  They made their home in St. Cloud and Rice before moving to their farm near Belgrade in November of 1947.  Her work off the farm included candling eggs in Belgrade and Paynesville, working for the Coast-to-Coast Hardware Stores in Belgrade and Paynesville, Howard’s Self-Serve and Pete’s Self-Serve before retiring. 

Leona was a member of St. Francis de Sales Catholic Church where she taught religious education and was in Christian Women.  She was an avid quilter, bowled league in her younger years and loved to go fishing with her good friend, Bernie Mohs.  She was known for her green thumb and  baking.   Her grandchildren remember her baking fresh bread, monkey bread, doughnuts and their favorite, her famous caramel rolls and chocolate dumplings.

Leona is survived by her children, Dennis Schwinghammer, Ann Temple, Dave (Joyce) Schwinghammer, Richard Schwinghammer, Walter (Jackie) Schwinghammer and Anthony Schwinghammer; 29 grandchildren, 54 great-grandchildren; 22 great-great-grandchildren; sons-in-law, Don Potter and Dan Houk and sister-in-law, Louise Schwinghammer. 

Leona was preceded in death by her husband, Walter in 2013; daughters, Patricia Jensen Born, Judith Potter, Rosie Houk; son, Allen Schwinghammer; two grandchildren, David and Jenny Schwinghammer; sons-in-law, Ron Jensen, Stanley Born and James Temple and daughter-in-law, Shirley Schwinghammer.
