Margaret "Joan" Hinderaker, 96, of Willmar, died Wednesday, April 13, at Carris Health Rice Memorial Hospital in Willmar. Her celebration of life will be 10:30 am, Friday, May 27th at Vinje Lutheran Church in Willmar with visitation one hour prior to the service. Interment will be in Fairview Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorials are preferred to Vinje Lutheran Church, Carris Health Rice Hospice, or the Kandiyohi County Historical Society. Margaret Joan Hinderaker was born February 24, 1926, in Alexander, Kansas, to John and Josephine (Schroeder) Georg. She graduated from Alexander High School in 1944 and from Kansas State University in 1948. She then completed an internship to become a registered dietician. She met Dr. Harris P. Hinderaker at Ancker Hospital in St. Paul, MN. They were married on June 29, 1950, in LaCrosse, KS, and made their home in Bird Island, MN. In 1959, they moved to Willmar, MN. Joan worked as a part-time dietician for Rice Memorial Hospital and Bethesda Nursing Homes until her retirement in 1976.
Joan was a member of Vinje Lutheran Church, where she was a release time education teacher and sang in the church choir. She was active in the community, serving as president of the Rice Hospital Auxiliary, as a member of the Willmar Area Arts Council, and as a volunteer with Meals-On-Wheels and blood drives. Joan was also a member of Cosmopolitan Study Club. Joan enjoyed raising Appaloosa horses at Skat Ranch north of Willmar and was a member of Glacial Ridge Appaloosa Horse Club. She enjoyed playing bridge and sewing, and had a passion for the arts and music.
She is survived by three children: Margaret “Peggy” Johnson, M.D. of Willmar, Steven (Penny) Hinderaker of Minneapolis, and Mary Hinderaker Jacobson of Willmar; three grandchildren: Peter (Rachel) Sherman Johnson of Lawrence, KS, Rachel Hinderaker of Minneapolis and Mollie Hinderaker of Austin, TX; a brother: Donald Georg of Lincoln, NE; and by other relatives and friends.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Harris Hinderaker, M.D. in 2016; and a son: George Hinderaker in 2020.
