Marlene Platt Obituary

Marlene “Marly” Platt, 88, of New London, died Saturday, October 12, 2024, at Rice Memorial Hospital in Willmar. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Friday, October 18, at the Church of Our Lady of the Lakes in Spicer, with interment to follow at the church cemetery. Visitation will take place one hour prior to the Mass at the church.

Marlene Ann (Hatting) Platt was born December 17, 1935, in Ashton, Iowa, to George and Frances (Warborg) Hatting.  She grew up in Ashton and graduated from St. Joseph Catholic School in 1953.  On November 22, 1954, she married Eugene Platt and they made their home in Worthington, Minnesota.  Marlene worked as a CNA and florist and at The Sewing Center. She later owned Office Supply Center with Eugene.  After their retirement in 2003, they moved to Diamond Lake near Atwater.  They later moved to Willmar and most recently to Bethesda North Pointe in New London.

Marlene was a dedicated member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Worthington, where she was active in the Daughters of Isabella, taught CCD classes, and coordinated the church bazaar. She later became a member of the Church of Our Lady of the Lakes. Marlene had a green thumb and loved flower and vegetable gardening, canning and freezing her harvest. She also enjoyed sewing, reading, word searches, and taking pontoon rides. She was a talented cook and baker and her grandchildren affectionately called her "The Cookie Grandma" for her delicious treats. Marlene cherished time spent with family and delighted in hosting family celebrations.

She is survived by her four daughters: Loreen Gross of Worthington, Carol (Lenny) Kruger of Worthington, Michelle (Dan) Hartog of Atwater, and Brenda Rieke of Atwater; twelve grandchildren; and fifteen great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband: Eugene in 2022; her son-in-law: Mike Rieke; a granddaughter: Annie Hartog; and her sister: Adeline (Cyril) Goedken.
