Marlys L. Flickinger, 83, of New London, passed away with peace on Wednesday, November 11, 2020, while in hospice at home with family by her side. She lived a meaningful life, full of love and kindness. If you knew her, she likely shared her generous heart, big hugs, sharp wit, charm, and grace with you. Marlys taught us many things through her own actions: strong faith, independence, self-reliability, patience, unconditional love of family and good friends, plus how to find humor during hard times.
Marlys Lorraine Jones was born in May 1937, to Kenneth and Frances (Allen) Jones, at her grandparent’s homestead near Lake Monongalia in Burbank Township. She attended country school near her parents’ home on the north side of Lake Calhoun, was confirmed at New London Presbyterian Church, and graduated from New London High School in 1955.
Marlys married Dale Flickinger (of Kandiyohi) at Spicer Presbyterian Church in 1956. They lived in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan briefly before moving back to Kandiyohi County where their family grew with farming and Dale's Heating & Air Conditioning. In 1986, Marlys obtained her Occupational Therapist degree and worked for Presbyterian Family Foundation until retirement in 2005.
Marlys was a very accomplished and sought-after cake baker and decorator as well as seamstress. Hobbies also included ceramics, painting, knitting, crocheting, silk flower arrangements, indoor and outdoor gardening, photography. She was an active member of Green Lake Lutheran Church and Hope Presbyterian Church, both near Spicer, and volunteered for many years making banners, teaching, and singing in the choir. She joined American Legion Auxiliary Spicer and Little Crow Snow Blazers. She also supported her children through the many years of school and 4-H projects.
Marlys is survived by her husband of 64 years, Dale; their 5 children: Mark (Jan), Myron (Jolynn Bloomquist), Joel, James (Lori), and Janice (Dave) Jablonski; 12 grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; 5 great-great-grandchildren; siblings: Velda, Elroy (Sharon), Howard (Bev) Jones; uncles: Arlos (Hazel), Roger (Kathy) Jones; stepmother, Dorothy Jones, plus more family and friends. She is preceded in death by her parents, step-grandson Jason Bloomquist, other relatives and friends.
Memorial services will be 11:00 a.m. Saturday, June 12, 2021 at Hope Presbyterian Church in Spicer. Visitation will be one hour prior to the service. Arrangements are with the Johnson Funeral Home in New London.
