Evelyn Ramona “Mona” Swart was born June 4, 1932, to Albin and Esther (Swenson) Gandrud in Benson. She was baptized at Monson Lake Lutheran Church in rural Sunburg and later confirmed from Our Saviors Lutheran Church in Benson. Mona attended elementary school in Kerkhoven and graduated from Benson High School in 1950. Mona was united in marriage to Henry Swart on December 1, 1951, at Hope Presbyterian Church in Spicer. They made their home on a turkey farm in Svea that Henry managed and Mona enjoyed raising their two children: Kevin and Heidi. Mona and Henry purchased a home on Norway Lake in the 80’s and enjoyed hosting family and friends. Mona and Henry loved to travel with family and friends and would collect a spoon each place they would go. These vacations included a trip to Hawaii, yearly ski trips to Quadna in Hill City, camping to Swift Falls, Itasca, Two Rivers Campground, Wisconsin Dells and the Grotto in Iowa. When Henry could no longer drive the RV, Mona stepped in to fill those shoes so they could continue camping. Mona loved her family. Her grandchildren and great-grandchildren spent a lot of time at their house usually playing board games, cards and puzzles. She would often write them letters or send cards when they weren’t with her. Mona loved her sister trips which included shopping, church bazaars, eating lunch at little cafes especially if they served a Norwegian dish, Klub. She was a loving wife, mom, grandma, great-grandma, aunt and friend.
Mona is survived by her daughter, Heidi Brewster of Benson; six grandchildren: Amy, Annie, Jamie, Kim, Corey and Jason; ten great-grandchildren; sister, Carole Freeman of Mandan, ND and many nieces, nephews, and other family and friends.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Henry; parents; son, Kevin; and her siblings.
