Mona Kay Welch was born July 13, 1941, in Kellogg, Iowa, to William and Vera (Uttermark) Hanen. Her family later moved to Clara City and Kerkhoven, where Mona graduated from Kerkhoven High School in 1959. She married Richard Welch on June 13, 1959, at the Kerkhoven Lutheran Church where they were active members. In 1961, they moved to North Hollywood, California. In 1972, they returned to Kerkhoven with their children and opened their home to many foster children throughout the years.
After returning to Kerkhoven, Mona worked for ServiceMaster, Print House, the nursing home in Kerkhoven, and as a hostess at the Blue Heron restaurant. She and Dick loved spending time at Tanner’s and Rustad’s resorts on Games Lake, where they enjoyed camping and fishing. They later served as caretakers for Games Lake, Kandiyohi Park #7 for over 20 years. They loved spending time with their family, grandkids and great-grandkids and made them many hand-made toys over the years. Mona also enjoyed gardening, canning, baking, sewing, quilting, and thrifting. Most of all, she loved spending time in the sun.
She is survived by daughters: Regina (John) Maningoine, and Rene “DeDe” (Scott) Fladung; son: Rodney (Lori) Welch; grandchildren: Rachell (Jeremy) Gerten, Tana (Franklin) Clark, Shain (Kathy) Wilke, Tyler Erickson, Trent (Renee) Helsell, Hannah Ruschen, Hailey Welch, Myah Zwart, David (Kasey) Fladung, Tyler (Cierra) Fladung; and many great-grandchildren.
