Norman Tanner Obituary

Norman Tanner, 77, of New London, died Monday, December 4, 2023, at his home on Lake Andrew.

His visitation will be 11:00 a.m.-1:00 p.m. Saturday, December 9, at Harvey Anderson Funeral Home in Willmar with a meal served during the visitation.  A private interment will be at Oak Hill Cemetery in New London.  In lieu of flowers, memorials are preferred to the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society.

Norman Alexander Tanner was born June 16, 1946, on a farm south of Brooten, Minnesota, the son of Lester and Tryna (Kuperus) Tanner.  He grew up on the farm and attended country school and New London High School.  Growing up, Norman worked both on the family farm and at the family’s resort on Games Lake.

On July 11, 1964, he married Mitzie Hanen at Rice Memorial Hospital in Willmar and three children, Mark, Duane, and Leslie, were born to their marriage.  They lived in a cabin at Tanner’s Resort and in New London for a year before moving to Kerkhoven.  In 1985, they moved to Lake Andrew, where they made a loving home and a life of memories for their kids and grandkids.  Norman worked for 43 years at Bernick’s as general manager in Willmar and later as vice president of vending in St. Cloud, before his retirement in 2013.

Norman’s life touched many people from Tanner’s Resort as a young child to his time at Bernick’s.  He lived for working. But even in retirement, Norman didn’t sit still. He helped at West Central Bait alongside his son Mark for many years and often stated, “Every day is a beautiful day if you are catching walleyes.”

If he wasn’t working, you could find him hunting, fishing, putzing at home or on their many rental homes, helping his kids, and spending time with his family. Annual 4th of July celebrations at their home on the lake always created special memories.  Norman loved his grandkids and when the great-grandkids came along, they held a very special place in his heart.

Norman is survived by his wife: Mitzie; his three children: Mark Tanner (Jody Phelps) of New London, Duane (Juliane) Tanner of Spicer, and Leslie Adrian of Willmar; eight grandchildren: Abby (Jay) Losing, Dakota Tanner, Hayden (Jami) Tanner, Ramsey (Troy) Melsha, Collin (Loree) Tanner, Samantha Adrian, Shauna Andreasen, and Shelby Adrian; and eleven great-grandchildren: Tenyson, Cooper, Landon, Gentry, Finley, Alexandra, Rylee, Daymian, Brody, Maci, and Myles.  Also surviving are his siblings: Florence Wellbrock, Audrey (Floyd) McQueen; Sharon Tanner (William McGraw), Donna Swenson (Jim Wagner), and Robert (Angie) Tanner, several nieces and nephews; and other relatives and friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents; and a brother: David Tanner.
