Opal B. Fixsen, 96, of Willmar, died Thursday, February 18th at Copperleaf Senior Living in Willmar. Her public visitation will be from 11 am – 12 pm, on Tuesday, February 23rd at Harvey Anderson Funeral Home in Willmar. A private funeral will be at Svea Lutheran Church with interment in the church cemetery. Memorials are preferred to Svea Lutheran Church. www.hafh.org
Opal Bernice (Christianson) Fixsen was born on October 18, 1924, in Whitefield Township, Minnesota. She was the only child of Wilhelm “Carl” and Alvilda (Lundin) Christianson. She grew up in the Svea area and attended Willmar High School. She graduated in 1942. After high school Opal worked as the bookkeeper for the Svea Creamery. She married Harold Fixsen on June 22, 1948, at Svea Lutheran Church. Harold and Opal lived and farmed in Fahlun Township. The couple was blessed with four children. Throughout the years, in addition to helping on the farm, Opal also worked at the Kandiyohi Rural Electric Association and later in the Kandiyohi County Assessor’s Office. For many years Harold and Opal ran a small income tax business. Opal moved to Copperleaf in May of 2019.
Opal was baptized in 1924 and confirmed in 1939 at Svea Lutheran Church. She continued to be an active member of Svea Lutheran Church throughout her life. She taught Sunday School for many years and also served as Svea Lutheran Church Financial Secretary for many years.
Opal enjoyed life. She was a member of a Svea Lutheran Church unit and for many years participated in quilt making at the church. She was active in the Red Hat Ladies Group, a local Birthday Club, and a local Bible Study Group. She enjoyed reading, sitting by the lake listening to the waves, putting puzzles together, playing dominos, and spending time with friends and family.
Opal was proceeded in death by her husband, Harold; and grandson, Matt Bjerkness. She is survived by her four children: Virginia (Steven) Hendrickson, Hubert (Linda) Fixsen, Dale (Elizabeth) Fixsen, and Sharon (Jon) Myllenbeck; nine grandchildren, and eight great-grandchildren.
