Opal V. Holmgren, 98 of Willmar, died Sunday, October 11, 2020 at the Olivia Health Care Center in Olivia. A memorial service will be held at a later date. Arrangements are with the Harvey Anderson Funeral Home in Willmar.
Opal Virene Holmgren was born on September 24, 1922, on the family farm in Middletown Township of Jackson County, the daughter of Willis and Anna (Siefken) Caskey. She grew up on the family farm and received her early education and many fond memories. The family later moved to Priam and she attended Willmar High School, graduating in 1940. She was baptized at First Presbyterian Church in Willmar and confirmed at St. John’s Lutheran Church in Raymond.
On May 14, 1948, Opal was united in marriage to Oliver Holmgren. They farmed near Clara City until Oliver’s death on January 30, 1960. She continued to live in Clara City and later Sacred Heart before moving to Willmar in 1968, where she worked for Molenaar Plastics and Willmar State Hospital.
Opal was an avid flower gardener and had a large flower garden she enjoyed sharing with all her family and friends. She loved collecting porcelain dolls and taking pictures, especially of her grandchildren and flowers. She enjoyed sharing her memories and enjoyment of growing up in a large family. She was blessed with good health most of her life and was always very active.
Opal is survived by three sons, Duane Holmgren of Willmar, Ron (Deb) Holmgren of Brainerd and Charles (Michelle) Holmgren of Atwater; five grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; sister, Joyce Clemons; sisters-in-law, Myrtle Caskey, Hazel Caskey and Delores Caskey.
Opal was preceded in death by her husband, Oliver; parents; brothers, Raymond, Lawrence, Roy, Ernest, Richard, Donald, Harold and William in infancy; sisters, Evelyn (Nielson) Hample, Hazel Pederson, and Dorothy Blomberg and great-grandson, Oliver Sondrol.
