Paul Richard Oman

Paul Richard Oman, 87, of Paynesville, died Friday, August 21 at St. Cloud Hospital. His memorial service will be 11:00 am, Saturday, August 29 at Paynesville Lutheran Church. Visitation will be one hour prior to the service. Burial will be at a later date at Clover Leaf Cemetery in Willmar. In lieu of flowers memorials are preferred. Paul Richard Oman was born on May 11, 1939, to Vernon and Frances (Jones) Oman in Willmar, Minnesota. He grew up in Kandiyohi, where he attended elementary school, and later graduated from Willmar High School in 1958. Following high school, Paul enlisted in the U.S. Navy and proudly served his country.

On November 14, 1964, Paul was united in marriage to Sharon Strootman at Bethel Lutheran Church in Willmar. At the time, Paul was serving in the military, and together they lived in various places throughout the United States. Paul continued his military service until his retirement in 1978.

After retiring from the military, Paul and Sharon followed a dream of living on Lake Koronis and owning a resort. In 1978, they purchased Grand View Cottages on Lake Koronis. They put many years of hard work and dedication into the resort and truly enjoyed the people and experiences that came with it. During this time, Paul also worked at AMPI in Paynesville for more than 20 years.

Paul was a member of Paynesville Lutheran Church, where he enjoyed participating in Bible study and took pride in lowering and raising the flag outside the church. He was also a dedicated member of the Paynesville Lions, where he served as president. Paul treasured the time he spent at his cabin in Bemidji and took great pride in his work at the resort. He had a special love for his beloved dog, Socks, and perhaps most of all, he enjoyed good food. He was especially well known for his delicious chili.

Paul is survived by his wife, Sharon; sisters, Nancy Oman Ward and Sally Carlson; sister-in-law, Jan (Ralph) Fuerst; brother-in-law, Dan Strootman; and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Vernon and Frances Oman; and nieces, Michelle Ward and Shannon Fuerst; brother-in-law, Dave Strootman.
