Paul Viss, 88, of Sioux Falls, formerly of Willmar, died Sunday, February 11, 2024 at Dougherty Hospice House in Sioux Falls. His funeral will be 10:30 am, Friday, February 16th at Rock of Life CRC in Willmar with visitation one hour prior to the service at the church. Interment will be in Fairview Cemetery in Willmar. Funeral arrangements are with Harvey Anderson Funeral Home in Willmar. www.hafh.org
Paul was born in Modesto, CA, on April 4th, 1935, to Simon and Hilda (Van Polen) Viss. His family moved to Grand Rapids, MI, in 1943 where his father finished seminary. After finishing seminary, they moved to Prairie View, Kansas in 1947 where he attended country school and the ninth grade at Long Island Consolidated School. In 1950 they moved to Prinsburg, MN where his father accepted a call as Pastor. He attended Christian School through the 10th grade and finished high school at Western Christian High in Hull, Iowa in 1953. He then attended Calvin College in Grand Rapids for a year.
On September 13, 1955, he was drafted into the United States Army. He attended basic and advanced training at Camp Chaffee, AK. He was stationed for the remaining time of service in Ft. Benning, GA where he worked as a Fire Direction Control Technician, basic training instructor and a mail clerk.
On February 28th, he was united in marriage to Carolyn Negen of Clara City, MN in Georgia. After receiving his discharge, they returned to the Willmar area where he worked for Franklin Life, Habicht’s Department Store, and Northwest Maintenance.
In 1961 they moved to Hancock, MN where he worked out of Morris as a highway construction technician with the Minnesota Department of Transportation. After retiring from MnDOT on January 25th, 1994 he continued working on a seasonal basis for Lawn and Driveway Service of Cyrus, Widseth-Smith-Nolting Inc. and Bolton & Menk Inc. as an engineering technician until 2005.
Paul liked to spend time with his sons, whom he considered his best friends and he enjoyed being with his grandchildren. Paul and Carolyn wintered with an RV in Texas, Arizona, and California and were full time RV travelers for three years. He enjoyed fishing, hiking, hunting, gardening, and riding his motorcycle. He was active in the support of his church, missions and the needy.
Paul is survived by five sons and one daughter-in-law, Barton and Julie of Sioux Falls, SD, Bonita of Talmoon, MN, Jackson of Sauk Rapids, MN, Joel and Margaret of Chatfield, MN, Todd and Kim of Merced, CA and Eric and UnSuk of Susanville, CA. His sister, Joyce (Joe) VanderKwaak of Terrace, BC, Canada, and 11 grandchildren; Trisha, Tina, Tyana, Shawn, Dylan, Nikki, Crystal, Justin, Isaac, Madeline and Jordan, and four great granddaughters.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Carolyn, parents, son, Bradley, two brothers, Elward and Norman, and a granddaughter, Hannah.
