Richard Allan Borgen, 74, passed away peacefully at home in Spicer, Minnesota on Thursday, November 25th, 2021. Rick was born on April 5th, 1947 in Thief River Falls, MN to his parents John and Elvina (Roese) Borgen.
Upon graduation from Lincoln High School, Rick made the decision to join the United States Army. After his marriage to Sharon Zavoral, he set off for basic training at Fort Leonard Wood, Missouri, and OCS in Aberdeen, Maryland where he was commissioned a 2nd Lieutenant. While abroad, he was stationed at the United States Army Garrison (USAG) in Bamberg, Germany. Rick achieved the rank of Captain, and was a decorated Vietnam Veteran of the United States Army Corps of Engineers.
After his tour of duty, Rick spent time stationed in Ft. Lewis, Washington. He and his family moved back to Minnesota following his honorable discharge from the service, laying roots in Willmar. Rick made a career in residential and commercial construction, and was the proprietor of Borgen Construction for many years.
Rick had a passion for Minnesota Twins baseball, woodworking, and current events; but most notably, watching The Weather Channel and eating “Papa cookies” (Oreos) with his grandkids.
Rick was preceded in death by his father John Borgen and his mother Elvina (Roese) Borgen. He is survived by his brother Gary Borgen (Bemidji, MN), his sister Mary Wiener (Willmar, MN), and his children Theresa Borgen (Greg Ingram) of Plymouth, MN, Christopher Borgen (Janelle) of Shorewood, MN, and Adam Borgen (Anita Fimon) of Minneapolis, MN.
Rick was affectionately known as “Papa” to nine grandchildren; Zach (Rachel) & Jordan (Josh Harvey) Hovey, Josiah Haats, Sydney, Josie, & Hope Borgen, Avrie Borgen, Blake & Jasmine Ingram. He was graced with two great-grandchildren, ZJ and Palmer Hovey.
The family requests that in lieu of flowers, please consider making a donation to Project New Hope, Inc., a non-profit organization that provides Mental Wellness Resources to Veterans and their families.
Following Rick’s wishes, there will be a Celebration of Life from 3:00-6:00PM on Saturday, December 4th, 2021 at the VFW Post #1639, 1108 US Hwy 12, Willmar, MN 56201. All are welcome to attend and share their memories of Rick.
