Robert Clarence Serbus was born on March 3, 1949, in Redwood Falls, the son of Clarence and Martha (Kodet) Serbus. He grew up near Bird Island and attended St. Mary’s Catholic School, graduating in 1967. After high school, he was drafted in the U.S. Army and served his country in Korea until his honorable discharge in late 1970.
On July 7, 1973, Bob was united in marriage to Gail Hickman, at Immaculate Conception in Watertown, MN. They made their home near Franklin until moving to Padua in 1980 where they raised hogs. In 1993, they moved into Belgrade and he worked for AGCO until they closed, and he returned to school, graduating from Ridgewater College in 2004. Bob worked numerous jobs after school and enjoyed keeping busy, but he was a farmer at heart.
Bob was known as Bobby, Bobert, Bobcat, Doe Boy, and of course the classic Robert. He loved spending quality time with his family and friends. In his early years, Bob enjoyed camping at Sibley and WeFest, snowmobiling and hunting up north. Later, he looked forward to family fishing trips and annual deer hunting. Bob loved nature and spent his free time outside gardening, mowing, and caring for the birds. With four daughters he learned how to be a builder, a mover, a mechanic, and his patience grew with each passing year. He humbly endured hauling a van full of girls to Kansas for the annual Thanksgiving trip which eventually turned into visiting his daughters’ homes wherever they resided. Most recently, Bob followed his grandkids and enjoyed watching them participate in their activities. Throughout the years his free time was filled by building bird houses, watching western movies, and taking lots of naps. Bob was an active member of his parish, serving on the council, as a eucharistic minister, a religion teacher, and a choir member. His favorite card game was Schnozzle, and he taught his kids and grandkids the game so he could beat them when the opportunity arose. He was always gentle, funny, loving, and faithful.
Bob died on Friday, November 26, 2021, at CentraCare Hospital in Sauk Centre at the age of 72. He is survived by his wife of 48 years, Gail; daughters, Holly (Ross) Nadgwick of Kensington, Martha Serbus of Belgrade, Rebecca (Gintautas) Garsys of Hamel and Ashley (Anthony) Price of Fargo, ND; grandchildren, Logan (Courtney) Nadgwick, Connor, Madeline and Jackson Nadgwick, Eliana Funes and Marek Garsys; mother, Martha Serbus; siblings, Mary (Richard) Welshons, Peggy (Stan) Siegfried, Steve (Val) Serbus, Pat (Jan) Serbus, Victor (Connie) Serbus, Larry (Julie) Serbus and Jane Serbus (John Monson) and numerous nieces and nephews.
Bob was preceded in death by his father and numerous aunts and uncles.
