Sarah was born October 11, 1951, in Comfrey, MN, the daughter of Lawrence and Lillian (Dodge) Buffington. Her family lived in Comfrey, and moved several different places throughout Minnesota before they settled in Spicer.
She was baptized at Faith Lutheran Church in Spicer where she was a member and graduated from New London-Spicer High School, class of 1969.
The summer of 1966 changed Sarah’s life at her family-owned resort, Twin Pines Resort in Spicer. After months of “waiting in the wings," Kenny finally found the courage to ask Sarah on a date. During their courtship, dates consisted of hunting jackrabbits, shooting rats, and going on double dates with their best friends until Kenny was drafted into the Army in 1968.
On June 15, 1969, she was united in marriage to Kenneth Petersen Sr. in Montevideo. To this union, they were blessed with two children, Ken Jr. and Michele. Following their marriage, they briefly lived in Willmar before planting their roots in Roseland for over 40 years and later in Raymond. Their family enjoyed summers camping, hunting and their yearly family vacations.
During her working years, Sarah worked at a bakery and then at Jennie-O Foods for 12 years until being diagnosed with a progressive eye disease and being deemed legally blind in the mid 1980’s. Following that diagnosis, she enjoyed her days at their home in Roseland, scrapbooking, listening to audio books, the home shopping channels or game shows and enjoying time with the grandkids. Christmas was especially important to Sarah as she enjoyed buying gifts for her family.
Surviving are her children, Kenneth Jr. (Stacy) Petersen of New London; Michele (Joe) DuFrane of Bird Island; seven grandchildren, Megan, Owen (special friend, Shelby Olson), Lauren, and Ivan Petersen, Malerie (Dustin) Siegle, Colin (fiancée, Carli Krogman) Thompson, and Cody Thompson and one great granddaughter. Also surviving is her brother, Henry Buffington of Sacred Heart and sister-in-law, Marion Mahlum of Belview.
She was preceded in death by her parents, and husband, Kenneth Sr.
