Sidney Kvaal Obituary

Sidney Kvaal, 83, of Willmar, died Wednesday, January 1st at Bethesda Grand in Willmar.  HIs funeral will be 11:00 am, Friday, January 10th at Harvey Anderson Funeral Home in Willmar with visitation one hour prior to the service.  Interment will be in Sunset Cemetery in Montevideo.  www.hafh.org

Sid was born June 16, 1941, to Harold and Minnie (Oppem) Kvaal, growing up on the family’s dairy farm near Dawson, MN.  After attending high school in Dawson, Sidney served a short time in the United States Navy and following his discharge he moved to Willmar in 1961.  He started work as a Carpenter for Bill Keelor building homes, cabins and other structures in the Willmar area for over 20 years.

On October 12, 1963, Sidney was united in marriage to Ruth Barstad at Our Saviors Lutheran Church in Montevideo, MN.  Two children, Kara and Steve, were born to this marriage.

Sid enjoyed hunting and fishing, whether elk hunting in Wyoming, Colorado, Montana, or commercial fishing in Alaska, he loved to be outdoors. He cherished the time he was able to travel, especially the recent trip to Alaska. He enjoyed his trips out West, to Missouri, Tennessee and Florida. He loved his fast cars and motorcycles, always looking for adventure!

After retirement following his carpentry days, Sid enjoyed working with Don Barber repairing cars and working as a parts runner before “officially” retiring in 2013. He was often found spending time socializing with friends over a cup of coffee at Frieda’s Café.

Our family would like to say a special thanks to the Barber and Rodelius families. You all meant a great deal to Sid.

Surviving are his daughter, Kara Grundman of Willmar; son, Steve (Renell) Kvaal of Corydon, IN; three grandchildren, Sarah (Eric) Highlander, Jessica (Eric) Tracy and Karlie Grundman.  Also surviving are his sister, Mary (Lyle) Hanson of Madison; brother, Claire (Mary) Kvaal of Willmar and sister-in-law, Barb Kvaal of Montevideo.

He was preceded in death by his parents, wife, Ruth and brother, Arne.
