Vera Cain Obituary

Vera L. Cain, 82, of New London, died Sunday, May 10th at GlenOaks Senior Living in New London. A family memorial service will be at 4:00 pm, Friday, May 15th at Johnson Funeral Home in New London. Public visitation will be 5-7:00 pm, Friday at the funeral home. www.hafh.org

Vera Louise Cain was born on October 2, 1943, to Ludwig and Verna (Loken) Gullickson in Swedes Forest Township. She was confirmed at Granite Falls Lutheran Church and attended elementary school in Belview before graduating from Granite Falls High School with the Class of 1961. During her school years, Vera was known for her dedication to academics, often staying up late to study. She excelled in math and writing research papers.

Throughout her working years, Vera held secretarial positions at Gamble Robinson and Plews Oilers and at the Willmar State Hospital as a Title I Clerk. She later spent a few years living in Germany, where she worked as a secretary for a German military attorney. Upon returning home she worked various jobs including housekeeping, Jennie O Foods, and Collectors Choice

Vera was united in marriage to Francis Cain in 1967. To this union one daughter, Tonya, was born. They later divorced.

Vera enjoyed life’s simple pleasures and treasured time spent with family and friends. She was an avid fan of the Minnesota Vikings and Twins and loved gardening, bird watching, attending parades, dancing, shopping, watching golf, and listening to country music. She especially enjoyed visiting with loved ones over the phone and cherished every moment spent with her grandchildren. She was a loving mom, grandma, and friend.

Vera is survived by her daughter: Tonya (Matt) Lief of New London; grandsons: Hunter Boyum and Hayden Lieser; bonus children: Brent Donner, Shandee Donner, Julie Bush and Brenda (Johnny) Guess; bonus grandchildren: Brenna Lief,  Amanda (Justin) Raitz, and Scott Boyum; sister, Marlys (Daryl) Masters; brother-in-law, Bernard Goelz; and many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents, and siblings: LuVern (Janice) Gullickson, Robert (Charlene) Gullickson, Theresa Goelz and Cheryl Gullickson; nephew: Kevin Masters and niece, Lisa Gullickson.

Vera’s family extends a heartfelt thank you to the caring staff at GlenOaks and St. Croix Hospice for the compassion, support, and kindness shown to Vera and her family. Your care and dedication will always be deeply appreciated.
