Verna was born in Crosby, ND, the daughter of Albert and Ardella (Thompson) Boutin. She first lived in Brooten where she attended elementary school and later graduated from Willmar High School in 1942. Following high school, Verna moved with her sisters, Delores and Mary Lou, and friend, Betty, to Seattle where she worked for Boeing as an electrician on the B-29 Bombers during WW II.

She was a wonderful cook and baker, and always enjoyed hosting her family to the cabin on Sundays. Playing cards on Saturday nights with her siblings was a favorite pastime but more than anything, Verna was committed to her children and grandchildren, doing whatever it took to help them and to care for them.
Surviving are her children: Gene (Tess) Skaalerud of Redding, CA, Mary Jo (Tom Goergen) Skaalerud of Willmar, Bob (Jane) Skaalerud of Willmar, Jeff (Mary Jane) Skaalerud of Willmar, Gregg (Fatima) Skaalerud of Tucson, AZ and Janae Langhoff of St. Cloud; 15 grandchildren and 24 great grandchildren. Also surviving is her sister, Cheryl (Roger) Elfrink of Mankato and sister-in-law, Bev Boutin of St. Peter.
Besides her husband, Marvin, she was preceded in death by her her parents and siblings: Albert, Ward, Loren, Delores, Mary Lou, Ronald, and Dallas.
