Virgil C. Hawkinson, 98 of Spicer, died Wednesday, September 9, 2020 at Olivia Health Care Center in Olivia. Memorial services will be held at a later date. Arrangements are with the Johnson Funeral Home in New London.
Virgil Carolus Hawkinson was born May 9, 1922 in Willmar, the son of Hilding and Anna Bertina (Forstrom) Hawkinson. Virgil grew up in Willmar and graduated from Willmar High School. He enlisted in the U.S. Navy, serving as an aviation metalsmith and instructor.On March 21, 1944, Virgil was united in marriage to Dorothy Janet (Potter) Hawkinson. After his discharge from active military service at the end of World War II, they came back to Minnesota. He enrolled at the U of M and earned a degree in agricultural education. They returned to central Minnesota where he taught school and agricultural extension education. He also was employed by a rural electric utility company.
In 1962, the family moved to Spicer where Virgil was employed by the New LondonSpicer School District, where he taught metal shop, welding, engines and classes in agriculture until his retirement in 1984. He was very active in the community, promoting agriculture and environmental education.
Peace Lutheran was always very important to Virgil. He and his wife were promoters of the outdoor services at Sibley Park and greatly enjoyed attending them.
He is survived by two sons, Virgil Hawkinson, Jr. of Havre, MT and John Hawkinson of Ames, IA; and his sister, Gloria Nelson of Hector, MN.
He was preceded in death by his wife, two brothers and a twin sister.
